Souta sat back in his chair and bridged his hands in front of his mouth. Brown eyes met blue as he assessed her.
‘Sure, there are similarities but is this girl really who she says she is? Is she really my…niece?’
“How do I know you’re telling the truth?”
“Mama, told me about the time she and Inuyasha helped you with the first girl you ever liked. How you’re first kiss was in a playground by the light of the setting sun.” Amaya smiled when she said it, thoroughly amused at having her uncle blush so much.
‘There’s no way she could know that, could she? I mean, I have never told anyone about that. He looked at her and reddened further. ‘Nee-chan told her about that??’
Amaya smiled at him so sweetly, it was her mother’s smile. She thought her uncle looked years younger in his embarrassment. It was quite a charming sight.
‘He looks just like Mama used to when Father caught her doing something naughty. Father would always just look at her and shake his head. He never shouted or got angry.’
She sighed, all this thinking of her parents was making her feel sad and lonely. She looked at the embarrassed, confused man in front of her. He still hadn’t said anything, so she took pity on him and spoke again.
“Shall I tell you what you really want to know?”
Souta focused back on Amaya. ‘What I really want to know?’ He didn’t hesitate to ask the questions that had plagued him for over 20 years.
“Why didn’t she come back? What really happened to her?”
Amaya nodded and took a deep breath.
“A lot of this may sound unbelievable to you, but I swear it is all true. I just ask you to keep an open mind.”
Souta nodded. ‘ Sure I can do that.’
“Ok. It all started when…”
“ Oi, wench, what the hell was that for?”
“Sit! Don’t call me that.”
Kagome stuck her nose in the air and ignored Inuyasha as he shouted at her some more. Shippou, Miroku, Sango and Kirara stared at the two. It always amazed them that they still fought so much. Well…it didn’t amaze them that much, sometimes Inuyasha had no sense when it came to Kagome. Actually, he didn’t most of the time. Miroku and Sango sighed simultaneously while Shippou just shook his head and tutted.
“Baka, Inuyasha.”
“Hey, what did you call me?”
Inuyasha forgot all about shouting at Kagome and chased Shippou around the camp. He had soon caught him and soundly knocked his head. Satisfied, Inuyasha dusted his hands and stuck his nose in the air.
“Keh, that should teach you.”
Shippou wasn’t going to let Inuyasha get away with it of course, so he ran to Kagome.
“Wahhh! Okaasan, Inuyasha hurt me!”
“Keh. Wha-aah….Ite…” His face was reacquainting itself with the ground it knew so well. “Heartless wench,” he muttered just loud enough for Kagome to hear.
“Sit.”
Shippou stuck his tongue out at Inuyasha for the safety of Kagome’s shoulder. Inuyasha was about to lunge at him when Kagome stood up suddenly.
“I sense a Shikon shard.”
Her words galvanised everyone into action. Inuyasha went on ahead carrying Kagome and Shippou on his back. Miroku and Sango followed on Kirara’s back after both females had changed.
“Inuyasha, its coming this way!”
Inuyasha could smell blood, human blood and something else…. His eyes widened in shocked recognition.
‘What’s he doing here?’
Hey came to stop in a clearing to see Sesshoumaru gazing coldly at the large youkai in front of him. Kagome and Shippou got off Inuyasha’s back but did nothing but stare. Inuyasha drew Tetseiga, it transformed while he did so. Kagome looked closer at the youkai and saw the Shikon shard.
“The shard is in it’s heart.” Inuyasha nodded quickly and rushed forward to face the youkai. He stopped when he heard that indifferent voice.
“Inuyasha, this is not your fight. Leave.”
“The hell I will! I’m going to get that shard!”
“This Sesshoumaru will not ask again. Leave.”
“Keh, like I’m going to listen to you. KAZE NO KIZU!”
Inuyasha let loose the wound in the wind with a large blast and smirked. He didn’t notice Sesshoumaru narrowing his eyes dangerously. Neither could he see the youkai. He just assumed that it was taken care of and started to put away his sword. The youkai could not have survived the blast. Or so he thought… The smoke cleared and there was the youkai, unharmed and far away from the crater created by the blast. There wasn’t even a scratch on him.
Sesshoumaru took advantage of Inuyasha’s shock and leapt forward past him and slashed the heaving youkai with Tokujin.
“Chikusho…” he heard Inuyasha mutter.
The youkai was gone, destroyed. Sesshoumaru calmly slid Tokujin back beneath his obi and walked away slowly. He had slashed the youkai across it’s heart, loosing the shard. Kagome ran forward and picked up the shard. It was instantly purified, turning form back to a glowing violet. She looked at the youkai lord and smiled.
“Arigatou, Sesshoumaru.”
He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye but said nothing and continued to walk away.
‘ Silly girl, I didn’t not do it for you.’
Inuyasha started to run after his half brother, yelling all the while.
“Oi, teme! Came back here! I’m not finished with you!”
Sesshoumaru completely ignored him and disappeared from view. Inuyasha continued to run after him when a voice spoke from behind him.
“Inuyasha…”, he froze knowing what was coming. “Sit.”
Miroku and Sango had arrived and witnessed the anticlimactic fight. A more lively, if familiar, one was carrying on almost as if there hadn’t been any disruption. They sighed and followed Kagome as she stomped back to camp. She had made sure to step on Inuyasha as she walked past him, pushing his face back into the dirt. Shippou giggled in her arms.
