On the porch of the house InuYasha had built for himself and Kagome, Kagome sat with her legs trimly pulled up to her right side. Little thrills of excitement went through her as she made small bouquets of flowers, wrapping the stems together with a bit of pink paper ribbon. She wanted things to be just right - tomorrow was her wedding day. A small smile played on her lips as she thought about it.
“Hello Kagome-chan.”
The sound of Sangos voice brought Kagome out of her thoughts. The former demon slayer turned wife and mother was walking her way, her baby son in a sling on her back and a package held carefully in her arms. Kagome gave her a warm smile.
“It's finished,” Sango said, and handed her the package.
Wide eyed, Kagome removed the plain, brown paper wrapping. She gasped in delight at the cream colored wedding yukata, embroidered in a rainbow of colorful silk threads. Reverently she touched the soft fabric, then looked up at Sango in awe and delight.
“It's beautiful! How did you ever manage to do it with the children to care for?” Kagome said in wonder.
“It wasn't that hard,” Sango said with a shrug. “The twins are good when I need them to be, and the baby sleeps a lot. I told you I would make it for you as a special wedding present.”
Gazing back at the yukata, Kagome felt giddy with expectation. Some one pinch her, this was yet one more confirmation that it was going to happen! Soon she would be InuYasha's wife!
`If only I could share this with my mother,' Kagome thought, and felt a twinge of guilt and sadness colored the edges of her glowing happiness.
In her mind, Kagome played out the scene of showing off her wedding yukata to her mother. She could see her mother clasping her hands in delight and beaming at her with joy and pride. Yes, that would have been wonderful…
“What are you thinking?” Sango said softly. “You looked so sad and wistful for a moment. You were thinking of your family, weren't you?”
The demon slayer was so perceptive. Kagome smiled at her reassuringly, and Sango gave her a sympathetic smile in return. She did not want her to think she was not happy or grateful, not at such a special time as this.
“Let me try on the yukata for you!” Kagome said brightly, and got up to go in the house.
On the other side of the house, Miroku and InuYasha were coming back from an exorcism in a neighboring village. The hanyou stopped suddenly, picking up the conversation between Kagome and Sango. Miroku stopped at his side and waited, having recognized by the way InuYasha's ears pricked forward that he was listening to something. Then InuYasha's ears drooped and his mouth became a thin line.
“Something wrong?” Miroku asked.
“Nah…it's okay.” InuYasha said, and continued to walk.
“My friend, I've known you for years now,” Miroku said, walking by his side. “I can tell something is bothering you - you can tell me, you know.”
At Miroku's words, InuYasha stopped, looking indecisive. Giving voice to his feelings was never easy, but Miroku was regarding him expectantly. The hanyou kicked at the dirt a moment and crossed his arms, then looked up at Miroku in resignation.
“I heard Kagome talking with Sango,” InuYasha began. “It seems your wife has given her, her wedding yukata.”
“Yes, I saw it this morning,” Miroku replied. “I think she did a great job - and she was pretty proud of it herself.”
“Yeah….Well, Kagome liked it,” InuYasha said slowly.
Miroku waited patiently for InuYasha to continue. The hanyou made no move to speak or continue their journey, so leaning on his staff, he decided to press a little further.
“There is something still bothering you, isn't there?”
Abruptly InuYasha started walking again, and Miroku quickly fell in step. Giving him a side long glance, InuYasha started to speak again.
“Sometimes I still think about what Kagome gave up to be with me,” InuYasha said. “On her wedding day, she should have family around.”
“Ah, I understand,” Miroku replied. “It was most likely a hard decision - but it was hers to make. She is a smart girl, and I know she stands firm by her choices. Please, no need to feel any guilt my friend, you know it would make her sad. This is an important day coming up for both of you, and you should be happy.”
InuYasha gave him a side-long smile, and let himself relax a moment. The house loomed before them, and the hanyou put out his hand to stop Miroku from going further.
“Should we disturb them at this time?” InuYasha said. “They are doing women's stuff.”
“Why don't we hide ourselves and watch.”
“Feh, you never will stop peeping will you!”
“Don't worry, just follow me.”
Kagome came out of the house, her face radiant as the dawn. The yukata was a perfect fit, and flowed down to her ankles gracefully. Sango clasped her hands in front of her and smiled as Kagome did a pirouette and giggled in pleasure.
“She's a lovely sight,” Miroku whispered to InuYasha from where they peeked out of the bushes. “You are a lucky man.”
“Yeah…” InuYasha said softly, unable to take his eyes off the vision of beauty that was his Kagome.
In another few moments, Kagome went back in the house to change into her simple miko kosode and hakama. The hanyou sighed inaudibly. It was true, she looked so happy. Yet, the words Sango had said and Kagome's response rang in his ears, like echoes of a dream. Not waiting for any response from Miroku, InuYasha got up from where he was squatting and strode purposefully towards the front of the house. Quickly Miroku got up to follow him.
“Oh, Miroku, InuYasha,” Sango said in surprise. “You were not watching, were you? I think Kagome wants her wedding yukata to be a surprise.”
The two men glanced conspiratorially at one another a moment.
“Of course not,” Miroku said, and smiled as his little son woke up and waived a chubby fist at him.
The mat that was the front door swayed a moment, and Kagome walked through. She smiled at InuYasha and Miroku, and held out her hand to her fiancée. InuYasha stepped up on the porch and took it.
“Well, Sango and I will leave you alone,” Miroku said, putting his hand on his wife's waist. “I'm sure Kaede and Rin have had their fill of the twins by now.”
The couples went their separate ways. InuYasha pulled Kagome closer to him, and she rested her chin on his shoulder, smiling up at his handsome face. As she regarded his pensive expression, her eyes traveling lovingly over every detail, she wondered what he was thinking. He was much too intense…
“Something the matter?” Kagome asked.
The hanyou glanced over at her. Maybe it would be okay to voice his thoughts. Only, he did not want to make her think of things that might make her sad. No, this was his Kagome. She was strong, loving and honest - no reason to fear her reaction.
“I want our wedding to be everything you want it to be,” InuYasha said. “Only….I am afraid you will be missing something I can't give you.”
“What's that, InuYasha?” Kagome said softly.
“I can't bring your family here to be with you on our wedding day,” InuYasha replied. “I'm sorry, I know how much it would have meant to you.”
Oh, that was what was bothering him….Slowly Kagome removed her chin from his shoulder, and then stepped in front of him, taking both his hands in both of hers. Their hands folded together like pieces of a puzzle, a perfect fit.
“You let me stay with my family three years ago because they loved me,” Kagome said steadily. “It was the right thing to do, then. But you are my soul mate, we belong together.”
A smile quirked the edges of InuYashas mouth as he looked up at her words. She smiled back earnestly into his face.
“I have no regrets coming back to be with you,” Kagome continued. “And as for lack of family…I do have family here. Miroku, Sango, Shippou, Kaede - they are all like family to me. And someday….I hope you and I will start a family of our own.”
Kagome gave InuYasha a mischievous grin, her eyes shining. Her expression was contagious, and soon InuYasha was grinning back at her. He wrapped his arms around her and took her in a tight embrace.
“Oh, I think we can start practicing on making a family on our wedding night,” InuYasha growled back. “I have some ideas…”
Giggling, Kagome answered back. “I have some ideas of my own…”
They looked at each other a moment and then kissed, a kiss filled with passion and promise.
