The Nightmare

The day they had all been planning for for years had now come. They had finally cornered the despicable half demon Naraku whom they had been tracking not long after the Shikon had been shattered. The battle had been going on for hours now, and they were all starting to tire as Naraku just kept dodging their blows. Kagome kept weakening his barrier to let the others have a chance at an attack, but just as soon as the barrier even shimmered, he had strengthened it again. Their bodies were bloodied and bruised yet they never stopped their assault, all fighting for revenge in some way.

Miroku, for the cursed air void placed upon his grandfather that had been passed down to his father and then to him. Sango, for the slaughtering of her village and family and imprisoning her younger brother Kohaku. Inu Yasha's cause was for pretty much fucking up his whole life fifty-some years past. For turning himself and Kikyou against one another. Kagome and Shippou were only fighting because of the hardship Naraku had caused to the entire island of Japan for the past 4 years.

Kagome reached for another arrow; her supply had dwindled to only four. She strung it on the bow, taking careful aim. She sought out where the near whole Shikon was located. Naraku had managed to find all but four shards, of which Miroku, Sango, Inu Yasha and herself possessed. She knew that those single shards were all that were keeping them going at the moment.

Naraku had been momentarily distracted by a double attack by Sango and Miroku from opposing sides. Kagome took the opportunity and fired, pouring all the purifying power she could muster into that single arrow. It hit true, instantly shattering Naraku's barrier. Before he had time to notice the third attack, Kagome's arrow had begun to purify the flesh it was pushing into.

Inu Yasha was instantly ready, already engaging his attack just before Kagome fired. His red sword held high above him as he directed himself towards Naraku's form. He brought Tetsusiaga down with all his might but he was too late, his sword bounced uselessly off the newly erected barrier.

Kagome sank to her knees, a feeling of hopelessness beginning to creep into her heart. It's no use. We'll never beat him. He's just too strong she thought. But then the single shard embedded into her skin over her heart began to pulse in time with her heart. Instantly she was filled with hope and strength, Midoriko was helping her fight this battle, she was helping all of them. With this in mind, she took a deep breath before standing again and whispering a silent prayer of thanks to Midoriko.

With no possible fear left in her body, Kagome slowly walked towards Naraku. Her features were unreadable, almost no emotion showing. Her bow held limply at her side as she stared straight ahead. She dropped the bow, and quiver of arrows without hesitation as she neared Naraku, only a few dozen feet away. "Kagome! What are you doing? Get away from him!" Miroku called, but Kagome couldn't hear him. She knelt in the grass, closing her eyes and arms crossing her chest. The memories of all the pain and remorse and sadness that she had ever felt in the past four years flowed into her mind as all other thoughts she pushed out. Concentrating hard on seeing the destruction of a village, the bodies of men women and children scattered across the countryside. The countless graves they had dug.

Her friends stared in shock as Kagome's body began to glow a silvery blue. A non-existent wind rustled her hair. Her lips moved slightly in a silent chant as the glow began to increase. Miroku, finally coming to his senses yelled to the others "What are you two waiting for, get moving!" Sango and Inu Yasha blinked before continuing their assault.

Sango was knocked to the ground by a flying tentacle. She didn't move. Miroku ran to her side to protect her. "Sango! Wake up!" he shouted, forming a temporary barrier.

Every few seconds, Inu Yasha's eyes darted back to Kagome. Her aura was now lapping away from her body like icy blue flames and began to radiate off her body in rhythm with her heartbeat. He gasped with sudden realization; she was planning on purifying the entire area in one full-blown attack. Would it affect him too? Could he get away in time? Was that even Kagome down there in the grass anymore?

His skin was beginning to tingle ever so slightly whenever he neared her form as he deflected Naraku's attacks. He figured her aura was more than a match for Naraku now, but didn't want to be proven wrong. It was his best guest that the way she was going now, she would only need a few more minutes. He landed in front of Miroku "Is Sango alright?" he panted

"I think so". He said, feeling for a pulse. "Sango?" he said, gently patting her cheek as he pulled her into his lap. She gently opened her eyes, and with a groan of pain, stood up. She held her left arm before shrugging off Miroku's steadying hand and went in search of her Haraikotsu on Kirara's back. "I guess she is fine then" he said, with a concerned look on his face.

"There's nothing in the world that can stop her now" Inu Yasha said as he turned back to Naraku. "Now that she finally has Naraku in her grasp, she won't slow down till either she's killed or Naraku is destroyed". And with that final statement He jumped back into the battle.

Just moments later a blue twister seemed to appear out of nowhere up on a cliff face. "Its about time you got here Koga" Inu Yasha said as he avoided one of Naraku's attacks.

"Looks like you could use some fresh help mutt face, didn't think you could do this all on your own" he teased as within moments at least 100 of Koga's best warriors appeared behind him, armed to the claw with weapons. "Well don't just stand there, ATTACK!" he barked.

Meanwhile, Kagome had nearly reached her required level of energy. Her aura was beginning to spark against Naraku's barrier and purifying the Miasma seeping out from him. She hoped that her love for friends would overpower her own aura and protect them since she could spare little time before she sent this ball straight at Naraku.
She had reached the appropriate power to destroy Naraku. With much effort, she stood, taking a few steps towards Naraku who had been trying in vain to attack her but couldn't get anywhere near her inner barrier.

"Naraku, You have caused nothing but pain and sorrow and your time is up. You've met your demise" she said in a voice seemingly not her own.

"Koga! Run!" Inu Yasha yelled, knowing that if he got caught up in the blast he would be purified into nothing. Koga nodded, tearing his eyes away from his glowing beauty and calling what remained of his pack into retreat.
"Kagome" he murmured with concern "I hope you know what you're doing"

Naraku merely chuckled at her remark "You think you can destroy me do you? You pathetic imitation of Kikyou, there's nothing in this world that can defeat me now"

"Are those your final words? Then so be it" Kagome said, lowering her head, closing her eyes in intense concentration before raising her arms above her head. The aura began to expand, purifying any evil energy that came near it. Naraku's mutated body began to sizzle and bubble as he was caught in the aura.

Naraku smirked "This may be the end of me, but it is also the same for you! Even if my physical body is gone, I will still linger long enough to finish you off!" he said. Kagome began to take one shaky step at a time towards him. Inu Yasha, Miroku, Sango and Kirara, and Shippou had retreated to behind Kagome as they watched in awe. Kagome's arms lowered to in front of her, as if she was pushing against some invisible wall. Inu Yasha's skin was beginning to burn and Kirara was whining, wanting to back away but not wanting to leave Kagome.

Naraku tried in vain to back away from Kagome as his body was quickly deteriorating. What remained now were his upper torso and a few tentacles. His face was twisted in a mixture of pain and disbelief. She stopped, looking down at him with a blank expression "Burn in hell" she said, in a voice filled with so much hatred and truth that fear actually flashed in Naraku's face. But then he grinned evilly as the last of his body was disintegrated a ball of dark energy formed where the ashes of his body began to disperse in the wind. The dark energy crackled with golden energy as it quickly grew in size, beginning to overpower Kagome's.

Kagome fell to her knees, finally coming back to herself, really having no memories of what had happened in the last few hours since Midoriko had given her the strength to keep fighting. She tried to stand but couldn't move at all; all her strength was drained from her body.

Kicking into action, Inu Yasha instantly used the Bakaryuha at all of the evil energy that dwelled in Naraku. The others followed suite, attacking with all their might to drive it away. She felt a pair of gentle but strong arms under hers. Her vision was beginning to blur, but she knew it was Inu Yasha with out a doubt. "Kagome? Are you all right?" he asked, carrying her far away from the battlefield by Shippou.

"Don't worry, I'm fine" she said in a tired voice.

"Shippou, keep an eye on Kagome" Inu Yasha ordered to the frightened Kitsune who nodded his head and taking on a serious expression.
"I'll be back Kagome, I promise" he said, sealing his promise with a quick kiss to her forehead.

Kagome didn't want him to go, she grabbed him by the hand "Please don't" she said, tears sliding down her cheeks.

Inu Yasha shook her free "Don't worry, I'll be back" he said, before running back to the others.

Kagome looked around frantically "Shippou! Over there, get by bow and arrows!" she said, pointing about a dozen feet to the right.

"But Inu Yasha said…" he squeaked

"Please Shippou! It could be the difference between life and death for us now" she pleaded. Shippou nodded his head and scurried off into the grass, returning moments later with her chosen weapons. Kagome managed to pull herself onto her knees, stringing an arrow with shaky hands. She took a steady breath, drawing on the power of the Shikon shard. Her arrow flickered before glowing brighter. She aimed at the center of the black ball "Hit-the-mark" she said, arms starting to tremble with the effort.

But as she let the arrow fly, the Black aura shimmered before dividing itself into several black tornadoes.

She watched in muted horror as her friends, one by one, were torn into pieces. First the monk Miroku, then the slayer Sango and her demon companion Kirara followed by the little kitsune Shippou and then the one who held her heart, the stubborn silver haired Inu youkai Inu Yasha. And then the energy blast made its way towards her, unable to run; she merely sat there. With nothing else to live for, no fear left in her battle worn body she clasped her hands over the single last shard over her heart and said a prayer for her friends and herself to find peace in the next life.

She held her eyes tight, repeating the prayer. She could no longer hear a thing, the energy blast less than 20 feet away, and in mere seconds was right at her feet. A single tear slid down her bloody cheek as it tore into her own flesh.

A/N:

Hey all! Gothic Hanyou here. Well, watcha all think? Thought this all up while I was daydreaming in world religions… If you have any ideas on what I should call this fanfic, or have any plot ideas they would be greatly appreciated. I'm just kinda thinking it up as I go along, no planning ahead or outlining, I only end up completely changing it any way.
