Chapter Four

It was the sun in his eyes that woke him up the next morning. He rolled over and wondered why he'd left the curtains open. Then he remembered and reached out with a sleepy smile. When he discovered nothing but cool sheets his eyes popped open. “Siren?” he called sitting up and looking around the small room. She was gone. He sighed. “At least she has my card,” he said aloud. “She might call.” Then he spied the card on the nightstand and picked it up with shaky fingers. 'Hey lover,' he read. 'thanks for a great night. Kisses, Siren' Was that it? He flipped the card over to see if she'd written anything on the other side. A phone number, email, her real name, something. Nothing. Dropping the card he flopped back on the bed and grabbed the pillow that still held her scent. Sighing he pressed it to his face and breathed deep.
After a while he got up and showered and got dressed. As he started to walk out of the door he paused and looked back at the rumpled bed and the card that lay on the floor beside it. On impulse he walked back and picked it up. “I'm going to find you,” he said pressing a kiss to the card, “my beautiful siren.”

“Well,” said Sango leaning back in Kagome's comfortable armchair. “Spill.”
“Hmm?”
“Kagome!”
“What?” Kagome turned away from the view outside the window.
“You've been ignoring me for five minutes. If you didn't call me over to tell about last night why did you call me?”
“Oh, sorry I'm so distracted. I just...I feel like a last night may have been a mistake,” said Kagome taking a sip of her coffee.
“Did you forget to use protection?”
“No.”
“Was he small? Were you disappointed?”
“No, it was wonderful.” Kagome went back to the window.
“Then what's wrong?” Sango asked exasperated. “Did he turn into a jerk afterwards?”
“No, he was very sweet,” Kagome smiled. “He told me I was beautiful, Sango. The most beautiful girl in the world.”
“Kagome, any guy would call you beautiful in that situation,” said Sango. “Not that you aren't beautiful,” she added.
“But I think he meant it,” Kagome turned away from the window and sat down on the couch. “I feel guilty.”
“You've got to put this out of your mind, Kagome. It's only a couple of days before you have to go home. I don't think it's a good idea to meet your future husband when your pining for a guy who's name you don't even know. A guy you were supposed to use and forget.” Sango reminded her. “I don't know why you feel guilty anyway. A night of wild no-strings sex is every guy's fantasy. He's probably bragging to his friends right now. ”

“I have to find her, Miro,” Inuyasha told his best friend. “I need to see her again. You have to help me.”
Miroku leaned back in his chair and shook his head, “I'm a private investigator, not a miracle worker, Inuyasha. You haven't given me anything to go on. 'A dark haired beauty with eyes like blue smoke.' Even after we subtract your infatuation from the description it doesn't help. You don't even know her real name. It's impossible.”
“Don't you think I know that,” Inuyasha dug his hands into his hair and stood to pace. “I know it's impossible but I can't bear the thought of never seeing her again. I'd search for her myself but Lord pain in my ass has summoned me home. Just try. That's all I'm asking.
“Fine,” Miroku sighed. “I'll give it a try.”
“Thanks,” Inuyasha smiled gratefully. “So, how will you start?”
“I'll start with getting a real description from you. Minus the infatuation,” he added.
“Um, okay.” Inuyasha thought for a moment pacing back and forth in the small room. She's not very tall, the top of her head comes up to my chin, black hair about waist length, blue-gray eyes, pale complexion...That's all I can think of.”
“That's good, I'll start at the club where you met her,” said Miroku. “You said she was talking to the bartender, maybe he knows her name. If she's a regular he will.”
“She's not, she said she doesn't normally do the club thing,” Inuyasha informed him.
“You would fall in love with a woman who's impossible to find,” he groaned.
“I'm not in love with her,” snapped Inuyasha. “I just...want to see her again.”
“Yeah, right,” scoffed Miroku. “Hey, your always talking about how your an artist. Why don't you draw a picture of her?”
“For the last time, Miroku,” sighed Inuyasha. “I'm a photographer, the only thing I draw is stick figures.”
“Artists draw.”
“There are all kinds of artists,” Inuyasha said rolling his eyes. “Which reminds me, I've gotta get back to the studio and juggle some appointments around. If you find anything out while I'm gone, please deliver the news in person. I'll probably be needing a friend by then.”
“Yeah, I'll see you later.”
“Bye.”

“What do you mean your not coming with me?” Kagome asked. “Your supposed to come look over the contract and help me stall.”
“I'm coming, just not right away,” Sango explained. “You'll stall better without me there anyway. That way you can say your waiting for me to come and look over the contract. There's just something I want to check out first. Now go on or you'll miss your plane. Don't want to make a bad first impression on your future husband.”
“I wish you would stop calling him that,” groaned Kagome.
“Sorry,” Sango said with a laugh. “I'll see you later. She waved goodbye as Kagome headed into the airport. “Sorry Kags,” Sango said to herself. “But I just want to make sure there's no way this guy can find you and mess things up.” She pulled away from the curb and headed home to get dolled up.

A few hours later Sango entered the same club that Kagome had been in a few days before. She went straight to the bar and ordered a drink. After a few sips she shot the bartender a smile. “Say were you working here four nights ago? Around this time?”
“Yeah, I was,” he answered. “Why?”
“Oh, a friend of mine was here and she mentioned a really cute bartender. You might remember her. Petite, dark hair, blue-gray eyes?”
“Yeah, I remember, Kagome right? I remember wondering why she was wasting her time with me at the bar when she could've had any guy in the place. I was gonna ask her if she wanted to chill when I got off but she hooked up with another dude.”
“Oh, him,” scoffed Sango rolling her eyes. She leaned forward and lowered her voice. “They didn't really hook up. He got kinda pushy so she agreed to meet him somewhere else then ditched him. Actually I was hoping that I could count on you not to tell him anything if he comes back looking for her.” Sango slid a hand across the bar and placed it over the bartender's. “Please,” she said with imploring eyes.
“O-of course,” stammered the bartender. “He won't hear about her from me. Um, do you want to maybe get something to eat later? I get off in a few hours.”
“I'm sorry,” Sango smiled apologetically as she removed her hand, “I'm involved right now.”
“Well, that's too bad,” a man said sliding onto the stool next to her. “I was sure from the moment I laid eyes on you that we're meant to be.”
“Really?” Sango asked dryly.
“Really,” he replied taking her hands. “Ditch the dud and marry me?”
“Uh, no,” she drew her hands away and stood flashing the bartender a smile. “Thanks, I've gotta go.”
“You can't run from destiny,” the man called after her. “We'll meet again, I assure you.”
Sango ignored the idiot and kept walking.

Miroku watched the beauty in red satin stride away. “Lawyer,” he said.
“How do you know?” asked the bartender.
“The walk, my man, it's all in the walk.” He turned to face the bar. “How's it hanging?”
“Pretty good, what can I get you?”
“Nothing for me, I just need to ask you a question or two.” He reached for a briefcase that was sitting by his feet and pulled out the picture that Inuyasha, with the help of a sketch artist, had produced. “Any chance you recognize this girl?”
“Yeah,” the bartender's eyes widened. “She was here a couple days ago.” His eyes narrowed, “Why?”
“The Varelli Brother's law firm contracted me to find her. I'm a private investigator.”
“Find her? Why?”
“What I was told was that she ran way as a teen but there's some family money set aside for her. But what I found out is that she ran away because of an abusive step father. The father died a few years back and the mother just recently. The old gal bequeathed some money to her daughter.” Miroku shrugged. “If I don't find her the money goes to the step father's family. Bastards, the lot of them. Anyway, do you know her name?”
“Shouldn't you already know that?” asked the bartender still suspicious.
“Her birth name is Ayame Shikamori, but she assumed another identity when she ran way. I've been tailing her for a couple of days but she doesn't get out much so I haven't found anyone else who could identify her. I approached her once but she was kind of skittish. I need to make sure she is who I think she is before I contact the Varelli brothers. I'd be really greatful.” He slid a few bills across the bar.
“I don't know...”
“Look, I understand you being reluctant. I'm could be anybody right?” he pulled out an wallet and a business card. “This is my P.I. License and the Varelli Brother's card. If you call the firm they'll back me up,” Miroku smiled engagingly. The brother's owed him a favor so he knew they'd go along with anything. He could tell the bartender was weakening. “I'm not even really a stranger,” he said. “I'm a regular here, but I usually come on Wednesday, you know, for ladies night. Maybe Shelia's mentioned me? She's my favorite bartender. I'm Miroku by the way.”
The bartender nodded in recognition. “Yeah, she's mentioned you,” he said with a laugh.
“Oh, that laugh can't mean good things,” said Miroku. “So, can you help me out?”
“All I can give you is a first name,”
“Anything would help.”
“Kagome,” said the bartender. “Oh, and I think she said something about being a proofreader.”
“Thanks,” Miroku said. “You've been a lot of help.” He stood and collecting his wallet, the sketch, and his briefcase left.

A/N: Sorry for the long wait. I have no excuses, I'm just a lazy bum. I'll have the next chip with the newly engaged couple as soon as possible....though I'll admit that might not mean much. Enjoy!
