Chapter 2 -- Inu Yasha Awakens and Enter Sesshomaru
Kaede brought Kagome into her hut, looking around, at first not seeing Akari huddled in the corner. The old woman untied Kagome’s hands and gestured for her to sit, which she did. Akari looked up and saw that Kagome was staring at her, with wide blue eyes. “Oh kuso.” That seemed to be all she could say now.
Kagome looked away, instead watching Kaede as she prepared some food. She suddenly felt angry at herself for feeling the way she did. She was being ridiculous. ‘No I’m not. I’ve been thrown into a bloody story book!’ Akari listened to Kagome and Kaede’s conversation, it was all as she remembered reading. She suddenly remembered something else. “Centipede!”
Kaede and Kagome looked at her in surprise as Akari jumped to her feet. “The centipede youkai that attacked you in the well, it’s coming back!” she yelled at Kagome.
“What are you--?” Kagome’s words were cut off by loud noises outside.
They rushed to the door to see that indeed a centipede-like creature was attacking the village, yelling for the Shikon no Tama. Kaede cast a glance at Akari then took up her bow again. Akari watched in amazement as the scene played out before her exactly as it had in the books. ‘Only this time, it’s real.’
Kagome took off for Inu Yasha’s forest, the youkai following her, drooling in excitement. Kaede and the rest of the villagers followed and Akari found herself swept up with the crowd. When they reached the clearing by the tree, she heard a gasp go up through the crowd and saw that Inu Yasha was mocking Kagome, who was trying to dodge the youkai’s attack while trying to convince the hanyou that she was not Kikyou. Despite herself Akari blurted, “Kagome release Inu Yasha!”
“Are ye mad?” Kaede sputtered.
Akari turned to her, temporarily out of her daze, “Look you’ve got the damn rosary beads and he’s the only one who can kill that thing!”
Kagome’s cry of pain prevented Kaede from responding. They looked to see her clutching her side as the jewel landed on the ground with a light plop. Akari’s hand immediately went to her pocket. The jewel wasn’t there. From there events proceeded exactly as Akari knew they would. Kagome released Inu Yasha; he killed the centipede then attempted to go after Kagome. Kaede threw the rosary around the hanyou’s neck and Kagome uttered the word he would come to hate so much. “Osuwari!”
When it was over the villagers had a hard time deciding whether to stare at Kagome or Akari. Akari saved them the trouble by fainting again.
She walked back to the village with heavy steps. The well had rejected her, refused to take her back. Kagome had held tightly to her hand as they jumped in and still Kagome had disappeared when they reached the bottom and Akari had landed painfully among the dust and bones. She had climbed out of the well, sitting on the grass beside it, leaning against its rough wood and cried, all the while muttering what seemed to be her new favorite word. She had felt Inu Yasha’s eyes on her but he said nothing. Finally she had gotten up and headed back toward the village.
“Why is this happening to me? Why can’t I go home like Kagome? How the hell did I get here in the first place! I’m no miko, I’m not that bitch’s reincarnation,” she said aloud as she reentered Kaede’s hut.
The old miko was not around so Akira flopped down on the mattress and lay there staring at the roof. Eventually she rolled over to lie on her stomach, resting her chin on her folded arms. Her eyes had the glazed expression of one who was looking but not seeing. Again and again she asked herself why this was happening to her. Her presence had so far altered none of the events of the story. Kagome had released Inu Yasha. She had shattered the jewel and Yura had still attacked. Akari had stayed huddled in a corner during the whole thing. Finally the more sensible part of her began to chastise her for her cowardly actions. ‘You’re braver than that you baka. Why are you being so whiny? You got here; there must be a way for you to get back. Hell this is one of your favorite stories so why not enjoying getting a chance to actually live through it?’
She sat up. “Yeah that’s right...I’m not some whiny little baby. I’ve gotten through worse than this...well no not really but still. Yeah I’ll be all right!”
Spirits lifted by her own speech, Akari got up and left the hut. Kagome should be returning now and she knew exactly where they would be. She arrived in time to see Kagome sitting on top of Inu Yasha, trying to wrestle him out of his haori and kimono. “Just take your clothes off!”
“Beg me to!”
“Close your eyes children!” she head Kaede’s voice from the other side of the two combatants. She laughed silently as Kaede chastised them and Inu Yasha stood shoving Kagome off, showing her that he was healed already. Then she walked up to them. Kagome looked at her. “Oh Akari-chan I am so sorry about–“
Akari smiled, brushing a lock of her short brown hair behind her ear. “It’s okay Kagome-chan. I’m fine now.”
Before she could say anything else Inu Yasha yelped and smacked at his chest. He held his hand out with a “not again” expression on his face. “Well, well if it isn’t Myouga-jin.”
The flea lay flattened and dazed on Inu Yasha’s hand as Kagome peered down at him. “A flea?”
Inside Kaede’s hut, Akari remained quiet as Myouga relayed the information that someone was trying to rob Inu Yasha’s father’s grave. As she knew he would when talk of his mother came up, Inu Yasha stormed out. Kagome and Akari went after him. They found him sitting in his tree, staring at the moon. “Umm...Inu Yasha?”
“Leave me alone,” he growled.
“Look Inu Yasha,” Akari started, staring at her feet as she spoke, “I don’t know what good this will do but...She’s not your mother.”
Inu Yasha looked down at her. “What the hell are you talking about?”
Then his head snapped up, Kagome had stiffened at her side. Suddenly both Akari and Kagome were being pressed to the ground by an inu hanyou. “Stay down!”
They all looked skyward and saw the carriage. When the face of Inu Yasha’s mom appeared behind the curtain, Inu Yasha let out a gasp. The black hand of a youkai reached out of the clouds and crushed the carriage, and held the thing pretending to be Inu Yasha’s mom in its clutches. Inu Yasha yelled and immediately went after the demon, seeming to forget Akari’s warning all together.
When the faceless mother youkai had been defeated, Akari eyes were drawn to the direction she knew Sesshomaru would come from. He appeared, stalking through the mists with smooth steps that caused not a sound. Every movement was perfection and beneath the silky kimono she knew lean muscles rippled with every stride. His face was beautiful yet horrible to behold. Not a single emotion marred the smooth alabaster that was his skin. The scarlet markings on his cheeks accentuated his high aristocratic cheek bones. The royal blue crescent peaked out from under the bangs of snow white hair as he gazed unerringly at them with golden orbs that promised death to any who opposed him. Even that damn furry thing on his shoulder added to his dangerous appeal. She spoke no warning as the taiyoukai approached.
“All a lie,” Inu Yasha finished, as the razor clawed hand reached for him.
“But all for the best, dear brother. Now I know where the grave lies,”
Inu Yasha’s eyes widened as he was lifted off his feet. Kagome gasped as Akari pulled her out of the way. “I never imagined that it could be in such a place,” Sesshomaru continued to speak in that soft and deep voice that was both alluring and deadly, “Can you imagine Sesshomaru, being so blind?”
Akari continued to stare at Sesshomaru as the scene played out before her. She couldn’t help herself. Of all the people of this world...he was the one she most wanted to be real. Sesshomaru retrieved the black pearl from Inu Yasha’s eye and entered the burial place of his father. Inu Yasha, Kagome and Akari followed close behind. Akari remained silent as the story continued along its path. She watched as the two brother fought over the mighty sword Tetsusaiga and as green death rained on Kagome from Sesshomaru’s hands. When Kagome appeared from the melted mass and handed the sword to Inu Yasha, Akari nearly screamed. She didn’t want Sesshomaru to be injured but that was how the story must go so she settled for, “Kagome, get your ass up here now!”
She nearly cried again as the youkai that was Sesshomaru disappeared in a flash of radiant light. Her mind reminded her of what was going to happen in order for a certain youkai to meet a certain little girl who would begin to melt the ice that was his heart. Akari pushed the thought away as she joined Kagome and Inu Yasha, who was gloating over his victory. “I told you,” she said, crossing her arms.
Inu Yasha’s golden eyes, so like yet so unlike his brother’s, gaze at her as his ears pricked questioningly. “Told me what?”
She nearly choked. “About the youkai masquerading as your mother!”
A look passed between Inu Yasha and Kagome that told Akari that both of them had forgotten her warning. “Do you guys remember me warning you about Yura?” she asked, disheartened.
“Akari-chan...Are you feeling ok?” Kagome pressed her cool hand against Akari’s forehead.
Akari brushed the hand away. “I’m fine...let’s just forget about it and go find the shards ok?”
They returned to the world of the living with Akari lost in thought. ‘I can’t stop any of the bad things. I can only watch and try not to get killed,’ “Holy kuso,” she breathed.
Ahead Inu Yasha’s ears twitched. He leaned a little closer to Kagome, “She’s saying it again.”
“Leave her alone, Inu Yasha. I’d be the same way if I couldn’t go home sometimes.”
Akari quickened her pace, putting a hand on both their shoulders. “Gomen. I promise I’ll try not to say it anymore.”
Kagome gave her another radiant smile and Inu Yasha gave his typical, “Feh,” then sprang into the trees to scout ahead.
Akari chuckled, “You know for an inu, he certainly spends a lot of time in the trees.”
“I heard that!”
The girl’s broke into giggles as they returned to Kaede’s village.
