Chapter 5 – The Chosen Door
“I don’t want you to come any where near the hot springs, got that Inu Yasha?” Kagome shook her finger in the hanyou’s face as he scowled at her.
“Feh,” was his response.
“And I want you to keep Miroku here too,” Sango scolded.
“What am I? A babysitter?” he huffed, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Tonight you are,” Akari giggled as they walked away.
The girl’s made their way in the light of the full moon to the hot springs and their new sauna all clothed in bathing suits, including Sango, who had been delighted with hers when Kagome had given it to her. After Kagome had the coals perfect, Sango took the bucket to the spring and brought into the sauna, pouring it over the coals as Kagome directed. Soon they were lounging in the steamy atmosphere, talking and giggling about their love lives. After awhile the steam started to die away. Akari got up and reached for the bucket. “I’ll get the next one.”
Sango rose as well. “I think I’ve had enough of this sauna for tonight my friends.”
“Please stay awhile longer Sango.”
Sango stifled a yawn. “Maybe tomorrow Kagome-chan. I’ll go keep Miroku occupied.”
Kagome and Akari giggled, having a good idea what Sango would do to keep the houshi busy. “All right. Good night Sango.”
“Good night.”
Akari and Sango parted at the door. Akari went to the spring and dipped the bucket in then paused a moment to look up at the clear cloudless night sky. The inky blackness was crowded with tiny pinpoints of light and dominated by the round silvery fullness of the moon. She sighed as she thought of Se and was excited to see him tomorrow to tell him that he could now stay with them. She went back to the sauna with the bucket and shut the door.
The full moon gave him plenty of light to see by as he stalked toward the strange shed. Steam was leaking from between some of the floor boards. He vaguely wondered what kind of shed it was but he had seen the girl go in there and he had a job to do. Staying hidden in the bushes he looked around. The miko had gone into the shed as well and he had been told to watch for the hanyou for he would prevent him from completing the mission given to him. No sign of the red and silver that signaled its presence so he crept forward, to the door of the shed. He opened the door slowly, pausing as it creaked on its hinges. A blast of heat and steam made it difficult for him to breathe for a moment as he stepped inside. It was hard to see but he could see the form of a woman approaching him through the steam. Pulling the dagger from his belt, he reached out and grabbed her arm. It was slick with sweat and water but he managed to pull her forward and before she could cry out, thrust the dagger into her stomach, angling it so it punctured the lung.
The girl who fell against him was not brown haired but black. He heard a gasp and saw his true target. “Kagome!” she cried as her eyes searched for escape.
He let Kagome fall to the ground, half-in half out of the steamy shed, and stalked toward Akari. She attempted a feint but the assassin was ready for her and his already sticky knife found its new sheath in her stomach. He let go of the knife, letting Akari fall then left. He could return now to the prince and tell him that he had been successful in his mission.
Prince Iroke dismissed the assassin and began to pace. The robed and hooded advisor knelt quietly beside the platform Iroke had vacated. “Why would she not choose me? I was certainly the better choice compared to that youkai.”
The advisor looked up, the hood fell back revealing the old and wrinkled face of the man. He gazed at Iroke with calm eyes that constantly changed colors. “That is the door she chose, my dear Prince.”
