InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Fatefully Entwined ❯ Chapter 5 ( Chapter 5 )
Kagome smiled brightly as she led Inuyasha to the door after dinner with her family. Surprisingly, inviting a total stranger to dinner had gone very well. Inuyasha seemed almost like he was part of the family. Not only was he handsome, but he was witty and intelligent. By the time dinner was over everyone, including herself, was sad that it had come to an end.
“Inuyasha, it was so nice getting to know you. I want to thank you again for returning Kagome’s phone.” Mama thanked him politely.
“It was no trouble Mrs. Higurashi.” Inuyasha shrugged. “Thank you for having me for dinner.”
Asami smiled brightly. “You are such a polite young man!” She enthused. “The pleasure was all mine. Would you like me to pack a little something for you to take home? We have plenty of food left over. I’m afraid I made too much.”
“No thank you Mrs. Higurashi, although I appreciate the offer.” He replied.
“ I should have you over for dinner more often. You and Kagome seem to get along very well.” Mama said, offering her daughter a teasing wink.
“Mama.” Kagome grumbled, her cheeks flushing not for the first time that evening. Asami grabbed her daughter’s bag and coat from the hook on the wall and handed them to her, pulling Kagome into a warm hug.
“He is so handsome , and those years of his are adorable.” Asami whispered in Kagome’s ear. “Dear if you don’t get his number I just might beat you to it.”
Inuyasha had to choke back a laugh. His ‘adorable’ ears were highly functional, and perfectly capable of catching even the lightest whisper. Mrs. Higurashi offered him a wink as she released Kagome from her embrace, and he got the feeling that she knew very well how good his hearing was.
“Thank you for helping with the spring cleaning dear. Will you be busy this week?” Asami asked as Kagome pulled her jacket on and threw her bag over her shoulder.
“I have work most of the week, but I promise that I’ll give you a call.” Kagome offered, leaning in to kiss her mother on the cheek one last time before heading out the door.
“Get home safe! The streets get slick after a rain like today.” Mama told them.
"Thanks Mrs Higurashi, " Inuyasha said as he followed Kagome away from the house.
"Goodbye dear. It was so nice meeting you!" Mrs Higruashi called after him.
"Mind if I walk with you?" Inuyasha asked as he fell into step next to Kagome. She smiled and nodded. The evening air was chilly, especially after a rain shower. Kagome pulled her jacket around herself tightly to block out the chill.
Kagome loved being out after a heavy rain. The world seemed to sparkle as the light reflected from the water that clung to every surface. "Thanks again for finding my phone." She finally said, breaking the silence between them. Inuyasha nodded.
"I would have returned it sooner, but I had something important to do first." He admitted.
"I felt like such an idiot when I realized what I'd done. I'm so sorry."
"It's alright. No real harm done." He said as he stopped under the ancient Goshinboku tree. "Besides, I'll admit that I was glad that I had a reason to see you again. "
Kagome laughed lightly. "You were huh? Even after I almost gave you a heart attack?"
"You made sure that I couldn’t forget you anytime soon." He teased.
"It was so embarrassing." she admitted, covering her face with her hands. She shuffled her feet, feeling the grit of the wet pavement under her shoes. Inuyasha grinned at her, cocking an eyebrow.
"Did you mean what you said?" he asked curiously. It took Kagome a moment to realize what he meant.
"You mean about your hair? " she whispered, not daring to look him in the eye. Inuyasha put his hands inside his jacket pockets and grinned. He could just make out the sudden blush of her cheeks through the dim lantern light. As often as she’d done it this evening he had a feeling that either she was easily embarrassed, or she liked him much more than she was letting on.
Kagome finally collected herself enough to answer, and gulped. "It isn't every day you see someone with silver hair, or your ears. Are you inu yokai?"
" My father was Inu yokai. My mother was human." Inuyasha nodded. "Actually, yesterday would have been my mother's birthday. That's why I stopped by the shrine. She used to bring me here every year to pray at Goshinboku. "
Kagome felt her eyes tear up in sympathy. Her father had died when she was ten, so she knew how painful it was to have a parent die unexpectedly. "I'm so sorry."
"It's fine." Now it was Inuyasha's turn to stare at the ground. "It was a long time ago."
“That doensn’t make it hurt less.” Kagome muttered, clutching her purse in both hands.
They stood in silence for a few moments. Kagome took a deep breath and looked up to the ancient tree's branches. The stories about this tree were older than the first of her ancestors to care for the shrine here. This tree was a living record of the area’s history .
It had always been Kagome's favorite place to go when she needed some time to herself. She reached up and ran her fingers over the patch of trunk empty of bark. A shiver ran up her back as she caressed the exposed wood.
"It's getting late." Inuyasha finally said, and Kagome nodded.
"Yeah, I'd probably better head home." Kagome smiled and started her way to the steep stone steps that led to the street below. Inuyasha watched her for a moment.
Inuyasha knew that he would be kidding himself if he didn't admit that he wanted to get to know Kagome better. There was just something about her that made him feel like he was more himself than he had been in quite some time. It was almost like the relaxing sensation of coming home after a long trip.
The two of them continued in silence until they reached the street.
"Do you have a car?” Inuyasha asked, looking up and down the street. The only vehicle on the block was his own, otherwise the road was deserted.
“I took the train here.” Kagome admitted, pointing toward the nearest station. Inuyasha’s heart did a flying leap.
“I could give you a ride home if you like.” he offered.
"Are you sure?” Kagome asked. “I wouldn’t be putting you out?”
“Nah, I don’t have anywhere to be. Besides, it’s a bit chilly for a walk.” he unlocked the car with the click of a button and held the passenger door open for her.
Kagome paused for only a moment. Common sense told her that it wasn’t wise to accept rides from men you had only known for a few hours, but something about Inuyasha made her feel safe. She stepped forward and settled into the passenger seat, smiling up at him as he closed her door and ran around to the driver side.
Their conversation flowed just as easily on the ride to Kagome’s apartment as it had at dinner. Kagome was glad to know that she and Inuyasha seemed to click in a one-on-one setting too. When her building came into view she found herself wishing that the ride had been a bit longer.
“This is my building here.” she told him, pointing to the right. “You can snag that spot right by the door.” He parked, then got out to open the door for her again.
Kagome found herself daydreaming about inviting Inuyasha upstairs. Would it really be such a bad thing? They would have the apartment to themselves if Sango’s texts were to be believed. She and Miroku had gone to Sango’s parent’s house for the evening, and she wasn’t supposed to be back until late.
“Would you like to come up to my apartment? My roommate is gone for the evening. We could just hang out and watch a movie or something.” She asked, feeling like a complete idiot when he stood there with his head tilted, his brow quirked curiously. “Oh my god! I didn’t mean it like that! I’m not a one and done kind of girl. I’m not trying to seduce you into my bed, swear! ” She blurted, covering her face with her hands in embarrassment. “Why are you staring at me like that?” she groaned.
“You’re kind of cute when you’re flustered.” She heard him chuckle, and she chanced a look at him through her fingers. “Am I still invited to hang out?” he asked, offering her his hand. Kagome gratefully accepted and let him pull her to her feet. He leaned closer as she stepped up on the curb, his mouth mere inches from her ear. “And for the record, I’m glad you’re not a one and done kind of girl. I like my seductions nice and slow.” he added, his voice low and gravelly, and a touch playful. Kagome felt her breath catch and a warmth bloom low in her belly.
“I’m a get-to-know-a-guy-first type of girl.” she muttered softly, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear.
“I’m in no rush.” he admitted with a smile that made Kagome’ s heart skip a beat. He closed the car door and held his arm out. “Lead the way.”

“... and when I tried to get away that stupid rhino charged me. I got snagged on his horn when I tried to jump out of the way and just hung there, getting flopped around like a rag doll.”
“How did you get away?” Kagome asked, leaning forward, wanting to know how the story ended.
“Eh?” Inuyasha blushed at the memory. “My, uh, shorts ripped.” He admitted sheepishly. “ I was so relieved to not be dead that I just took off running after my buddies when they booked it. I didn’t even notice I was butt naked until we were half way back to the dorm and I got catcalled by a group of senior girls.”
“You really did that?” Kagome asked through tears of laughter. Her cheeks ached from smiling, and she leaned over to catch her breath.
“Yeah, not my brightest moment. I was lucky I wasn’t kicked out of school, but my older brother was so upset about it that he had me homeschooled until I graduated.”
“That’s harsh.” She winced in sympathy. “But seriously, their mascot was a rhino?”
“That’s what I said! What kind of spoiled, snub nosed brats do you have to be to have a live rhino as your mascot? They were begging for someone to take them down a notch.”
“Please tell me you guys beat them.” Kagome pleaded.
“Forty-three to twenty-one!” Inuyasha guffawed, clapping his hands. “The walk of shame was totally worth it!”
Kagome felt like her sides would split open as she laughed again. She allowed herself to fall over, letting her shoulders land in Inuyasha’s lap. “What were you like in school?” he asked, brushing his fingers through her dark hair.
“I was a bit of a goody two shoes honestly.” Kagome admitted with a sigh. “I was more into brushing up on my history than having a brush with death. I skipped school once. My friend Ayumi’s parents took our group to one of those onsen spas up in the mountains for a week. My mom called me in sick so I could go.But I did punch Ayumi’s older brother in the nose. Not nearly as interesting as painting a rhino.”
Inuyasha’s long silver hair curtained around them as he leaned over. “I think that depends.” he shrugged, playing absently with her hair again, enjoying the feel of its silkiness against his skin.
“On what?”
“Whether or not he deserved it.” Inuyasha answered, a glint in his eye. Kagome grimaced slightly.
“He untied my bikini top when we were swimming in the pool, so…” she was taken off guard by how close Inuyasha seemed as he hovered over her. “... he deserved it.” she finished, letting her voice trail off.
“Yeah, he sounds like a prick.” Inuyasha agreed.
“It earned me quite a reputation. I broke his nose and gave him two black eyes. None of the other guys at school were brave enough to come near me after that. They were too scared I would deck them if they pissed me off.” she admitted sheepishly.
Inuyasha watched as Kagome absently twirled her fingers. He had to admit, if a girl like her had gone to school with him he probably would have avoided her too. However the thought of Kagome decking that little jerk like that was a bit of a turn on.
He gulped, watching as Kagome licked her lips, making them glisten slightly in the dim light filtering through the curtain of his hair. Her eyes stared up into his own, dark and deep with specs of gold that seemed to reflect the amber of his own. He found himself wanting to know what it would feel like to kiss her right now.
“I like a woman who can hold her own.” he admitted, lowering himself so they were almost nose to nose.
“You do?” Kagome asked, her breath hitching slightly.
“Uh-huh.” Inuyasha nodded, the tip of his nose brushing lightly against hers. “Would you punch me if I kissed you?” he asked softly, gently brushing her bangs away from her eyes.
“No.” answered softly, closing her eyes. Inuyasha slid his hand behind her head, cradling it as he closed the distance between them.
Kagome felt herself melt at the touch of his lips against her own. His tongue slid over her bottom lip, and she let her lips part, not in the least startled by the warm wet feeling of his tongue on her own. She felt like she was on fire, and wanted nothing more than to be closer to him. Feeling a surge of daring, she pushed herself up into his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck with a boldness she hadn’t known she possessed. They paused for the length of a breath, then Inuyasha’s lips found hers again a moment later.
A moan escaped her as his hands slid over her hips and up her sides, leaving trails of fire in their wake. She pressed herself closer, not caring that the collar of her shirt had ridden so low that you could see her bra without any trouble.
God Kagome’s lips were so soft, and she tasted of the peppermint tea she had been sipping earlier. A lusty growl escaped his lips, rumbling from deep in his chest. Kagome’s reaction was unexpected to say the least. She moaned against his mouth, letting her hips grind against him rhythmically. The effect of the intimate contact was immediate. Without any warning he was as hard as a rock. There was no hiding it as it rose up, hitting Kagome square in the backside . He sighed, beating himself up for his body’s reaction, and for making her feel uncomfortable. He slowly pulled away, choosing instead to rest his forehead against her shoulder. He was far to mortified to look her in the face right now.
“I really like you.” he muttered, drunk on his lust high. He nuzzled his nose against her neck, breathing in the soft floral scent that clung to her skin. It did nothing to soothe his erection, unfortunately, and he groaned in humiliation.
“I really like you too.” he heard her answer breathily, her arms wrapping around his neck. “Is it okay if we slow down a bit?”
“I’m in no rush, I promise.” Although my dick has other ideas, he mentally cursed himself, feeling it strain almost painfully against his jeans . Kagome slowly slid off of him, taking a seat beside him instead. Her cheeks were flushed and her lips were a little swollen from their kissing, but he could tell that as much as she had enjoyed it, he would hate himself for pushing her past her comfort zone.
They sat there quietly for a few moments, Inuyasha hating the awkwardness. “Probably not the best first date you’ve ever had.” he joked, trying to lighten the mood. He wasn’t sure this counted as a date at all, but he hoped that maybe she would agree to see him again.
“This doesn’t even break my top ten worst.” Kagome chuckled, smiling shyly, peering up at him through her long lashes. Inuyasha felt hope rekindle in his chest.
“Guess I better make sure the second one knocks your socks off then, huh?”
“Dinner is a good place to start.” she suggested with a shrug.
“Are you free later this week?”
He watched her worry at her lip as she thought for a moment. “Sure. I’m only working a few mornings this week.”
“Great!” Inuyasha blurted, already mulling plans over in his head. Kagome’s phone chimed from the coffee table beside them. She leaned over and gave it a quick glance.
“It’s already ten thirty! Time really does fly when you’re having fun.”
“I should probably go so you can get some sleep before you work tomorrow. Would it be alright if I called you some time?” he asked, getting to his feet.
“I would like that.” She quickly jogged to the kitchen and pulled her phone from her purse. “Do you have the Quickdrop app?” she asked absently as she met him at the door.
“Uh, yeah.” Inuyasha fumbled to pull his phone from his jacket pocket, tapping it against her’s. .
“There.” Kagome sighed, pushing her hair back over her shoulder. She bouncing nervously on the balls of her bare feet, watching him expectantly. She was utterly adorable standing there smiling up at him. His eyes strayed to her lips again. Right now he wanted nothing more than to kiss them once more.
Kagome reached for the door and pulled it open for him. “I’ll walk you to the elevator.” she offered stepping out into the hall. They walked in silence for a moment or two. The quiet felt maddening to him after spending the entire evening laughing until his sides split and his ears rang. Kagome smiled up at him, and Inuyasha felt his heart tug.
“Thanks for hanging out with me tonight. I had fun.” She said softly. Standing up on her toes, she leaned forward and kissed him. It was soft and sweet, but it made Inuyasha’s heart pound just the same. I’m doomed. He thought to himself, letting his hands rest on her hips, enjoying the feel of her soft body pressed closely against him. The elevator dinged loudly, but he didn’t care. He could always grab it again in a minute or two. The door slid open with a soft clack, and someone gasped.
“Kagome!”
She sighed against his mouth. “Call me okay?” she whispered as they parted.
“Yeah.” he agreed, stepping backward onto the elevator.
“Hello!?!”
Kagome turned, finally addressing the new arrival, a woman about her own age wearing a honey colored dress, her long brown hair pulled up in a high pony tail. She linked arms with Kagome as she sized him up, eyeing him suspiciously.
“Hey Sango!” Kagome greeted cheerfully.
“Don’t ‘ Hey Sango!’ me! Are you just going to pretend that you weren’t just making out with some guy in the middle of the…” the elevator doors shut, cutting off the rest of the conversation. Inuyasha leaned against the elevator wall with his shoulder and sighed heavily. The image of Kagome smiling up at him through those long lashes after that last kiss was burned into his brain.
Wow.
