Down the hall, Sango peeked into the dark room. The only light inside was from a lone candle burning in the window but that was enough for her to make out his sleeping silhouette. She sat down on the edge of the bed and tentatively reached out to shake him awake.
“My dear, there is no need. I am awake.” He said, frightening her.
“What are you doing still awake?” She asked unsteadily.
“Thinking of you.” He said simply, smiling at her.
“Remember the rules. I used my first favor to keep you away.” She said, scooting away from him.
Miroku nodded solemnly, turning to his side and trying to fall asleep again. She climbed under the blankets of the bed, blushing brightly.
He rolled to face her with a confused look. She watched him, studying his features carefully and suspiciously.
“I love you. Why can't you be faithful and love me back?” She asked, tears immediately welling in her eyes.
“I wish you wouldn't say that.” He said, sitting up and cupping his face in his hands. Sango realized he wasn't wearing his robes but at that point, she didn't care.
“You disgust me! Why can't you just stop looking at other women and try to get to know me? Maybe you'd actually like me for me and not my body.” She yelled, holding her stomach to control her shaking. By now, she was sitting up on her knees so she could be level with him
“I love you, Sango. I just wish you didn't love me.”
She snatched his hand away and slapped him sharply across the cheek.
“Heartless bastard! It took every little bit of courage I had to say that and now you're telling me I'm not allowed to feel the way I do? Why the hell not!” She screeched.
“Because I don't want to leave you! Now will you calm down and let me explain?” He said in a course whisper, grabbing her wrist. “I don't know what I would do if anything happened to you while we were fighting so I tried to stay away but I couldn't so I decided I would at least keep you from loving me.”
“Why didn't you just let me decide that?” She asked, leaning on his shoulder.
“Because if I did, you would have stayed with me, even if we didn't beat Naraku. I couldn't die and leave you.”
Sango looked at him carefully then smacked him over the head. He rubbed the lump that was quickly growing and looked at her pleadingly.
“Why is it that everything I do gets me hit? Can't you express yourself less violently?”
“Not when I have to deal with you! Let me decide if I want to take that risk or not, hmm?” She said, kissing the lump and then, his lips.
“I thought I wasn't allowed to touch you.” He said with a smirk.
“You can't. I still can.” She pushed him back and kissed him slowly.
It was actually her first real kiss so it was easy to tell that she was getting a little self-conscious. Miroku put his hands on her waist and lay down, pulling her down ontop of him.
“Um, Miroku? What are you… we aren't going to…” She looked down at him and blushed.
“No, we aren't. I love you more than you can ever know but it isn't the right time. If you still love me after Naraku is dead, I will marry you. Until then, I want to wait.” He leaned up and kissed her again.
Sango just lay down on his chest and listened to his breathing. She loved him and she would wait for him through the battles with Naraku and the completion of the jewel. She knew he was only looking out for her own good but the need to be his was driving her crazy. But she would wait, no matter how long it took, for him to acknowledge their love.
They fell asleep that way, Kirara getting in the bed beside her somewhere in the middle of the night and Shippo sleepily following suit.
The next morning, Sango went back down the hall to check on Kagome. When Inuyasha never went back to his room, she wondered what had happened. She knocked on the door and when no one answered, she let herself in. There was a moving mound in the center of the bed and from that mound came a pair of silver ears.
“Inuyasha, is Kagome buried somewhere in there with you by chance?” Sango said, chuckling.
He looked at her sleepily then pulled the comforter over his head with a grunt. Soon, Kagome's hand emerged from the sea of tangled sheets with a yawn.
“Five more minutes mom…” She grumbled in her sleep.
Sango giggled and slipped back out to give the couple a little time to make themselves presentable. It wasn't hard to figure out what they had been doing and she could just imagine what they would hear from Miroku. The thought suddenly brought a new wave of sadness to her, remembering now that she would never know their happiness.
“She's gone Inuyasha. You can get up now.” Kagome tented her pillow over her head.
“I don't wanna.” He growled, pulling her against him with a smirk.
“No, Inuyasha. We have to get up. What will the others think when we don't show up at breakfast?” She asked, trying to roll away from him.
He straddled her hips and kissed her deeply, letting his tongue roam her mouth as if he were charting a new land. He moved his hands up into her hair but when his fingers brushed something, he paused.
“What is it?” She asked. A pair of black dog-ears suddenly popped up from the top of her head and twitched at him, sending him into a fit of uncontrolled laughter.
Kagome looked at him strangely and reached to the top of her head in question. When she felt the ears and felt them twitch, it was her first instinct to scream, then to sit Inuyasha within an inch of his life.
He was now buried in a sea of blankets but it didn't keep the smile off his face once the spell was lifted. Kagome glared at him with a hint of panic welling inside of her.
“What did you do to me!?! I have dog ears!! Am I a demon?” She was rubbing the top of her head gently and trying her hardest not to panic.
“Half demon. Just chill out, everything is gonna be fine. It's not the end of the world, ya know.” He huffed, still smiling.
Kagome refused to listen. She twitched her ears intermediately, testing her control, then glared at him. He was looking at with amusement and an emotion she couldn't quite place.
“What are you looking at?” She scratched her ears.
“Your eyes.” Inuyasha said calmly, reaching for the hand mirror on the bedside table.
He held it up to her and she gasped. Her eyes were a soft, honey brown, not quite the striking gold of Inuyasha's but still beautiful. Her hair fell to one side, looking attractively tousled and she noticed a single streak of silver framing her face. There was also a definite lengthening to it. The most noticeable change though came from the royal purple slash across her left cheek.
Kagome touched her hair in disbelief. When he moved the mirror away, she realized the emotion she couldn't place was lust. Her sense of smell had increased dramatically as well as her eyesight and his scent was so very male that she just wanted to lie back down and inhale that scent the rest of the morning.
Inuyasha wrapped his arms around her and kissed her. The prolonged contact sped up his ambition to take her again and he flipped her over and laid her down onto her stomach. He kissed her neck, pausing at the mark that he had just noticed had spread to the center of her back where it fanned out in intricate pattern before leading to a rune surrounding a glowing replicate of the Shikon no Tama. He traced the pattern with his claw and felt her shiver.
“Inuyasha…please, stop teasing me.” She panted.
He leaned down and ran his tongue around the shell of her ear. Kagome balled her fists into the sheets and whimpered his name. A sharp little knock at the door made Inuyasha growl, red eyes blazing at the intrusion. He had discovered the night before that his demon blood awakened at the attention of his newfound mate and he had hoped he could keep it in check. He was wrong.
“Inuyasha, Kagome, are you ready? We wanna leave out early this morning.” Shippo's words were dripping with childish impatience.
“Umm… we'll be right out, Shippo. Just stay there, okay?” Kagome said, feeling a little breathless.
She sat up in an attempt to find her clothes but was pushed down roughly on to the bed. Inuyasha pinned her to the bed and went back to his earlier motions.
“Inuyasha, let me up! We've got to go now.” She struggled but he was still too strong for her.
Eventually, she gave up and started moving into his touch. She rolled on to her back and wrapped her arms and legs around him. The seductive smirk he gave her was enough to send they're agenda out the window. She leaned up and kissed her, roaming her tongue in his mouth and loving the sound of his panted breaths as she dragged her claws over his back.
“You guys, I'm serious! Can't you keep your hands off of each other long enough for us to get out of here?” Shippo snapped again.
Kagome blushed and looked up at her mate pleadingly. His eyes began to clear a bit and finally, he let her up. Her eyes were doing the same, reverting back to their original chocolate brown. The purple slash across her face began to fade too but the silver streak and ears didn't seem to be going anywhere for a while.
They got dressed and went out to meet the others. Kagome kept her ears folded down so that, hopefully, no one would notice. She used a wide hair band from her pack to keep them held down but there wasn't much she could do about the streak.
“My friends, leaving so soon? I had hoped you would stay longer.” Kotoro said, meeting them at the base of the stairs.
“We thank you for your hospitality but we need to be going.” Sango said, acting as diplomat seeing as Inuyasha refused to let Kagome near their host.
“Well allow me to order some food for your journey. I'm sure you have little time to stop and find sufficient food on your travels.”
He ordered their lunches made and it did not take long before they were ready. Kotoro walked them out personally but he couldn't help but notice the extremely possessive way Inuyasha was handling Kagome. He walked them out as far as the edge of his property, which was roughly 9 or 10 kilometers out. They all thanked him once more and went on their way.
“Kagome, what happened to your hair?” Sango asked, noticing for the first time the unique new coloring.
The girl blushed a brilliant red and kept her head down. Inuyasha just smiled to himself.
“I thought I'd just try something new.”
Well, that was… interesting. Please read and review because it started better than all of my others but it ended kind of different than I had hoped.
