InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Firflies ❯ Firefly ( Chapter 1 )
[ A - All Readers ]
A/N: I don't write fanfiction. Really I don't. This is just me being bored and avoiding doing a project. So if this sucks, please don't mind it.
Please don't poke and prod too hard, for you see, I am fragile. .__.;
I don't own Inuyasha or any of the characters mentioned in this piece of `writing'. If I did, I wouldn't be here procrastinating. I'd be laying on the beach in Hawaii.

“That stupid jerk…” She muttered. She tried to wipe the tears away but they just kept flowing. Inuyasha…why does he always have to say the things that hurt me most? It was a stupid insult, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt. She couldn't take it so she just left. Didn't even sit him or anything she was so mad. Even though he really did deserve it. She had left the ratty hut her friends had found and ran into the woods. She had heard her friends scolding Inuyasha. Heard Inuyasha get whacked upside the head by Miroku or Sango. And even the faint cries of Inuyasha yelling for her to come back but she didn't care. She just kept blindly stomping through the woods. The twigs snapped at her, scratched her, the roots tried to trip here and almost succeeded a few times, but she just kept on going. She knew it was stupid the way she was acting but she wanted to be as far away from that baka as possible. She must have been going for awhile because when she finally broke from the woods, the light from the sun was almost gone on the horizon. And now here she was, standing in the middle of an open field on a hill, close to darkness, with the dense trees caging her in and worst of all, lost.
“Damnit.” She scolded herself. Looking around, she noticed how it was a nice view when she looked passed the trees below her. The moon was shining bright in the cloudless sky illuminating the grass and closed bulbs surrounding her feet. I imagine that in the daytime this must be a beautiful place to be. She sighed then, looking out into the forest she knew that it was not the best idea to stay standing up like this. The perfect prey for unwanted predators. So she unceremoniously dumped herself to the ground. She wiped her eyes with her sleeve; the tears had stopped though the sniffles remained. Bakayaro. He thinks he can just poke me and call me whatever he wants and I'll just take it. Like hell. …Well, I guess whether I like it or not I'll be seeing him soon. Even if he's an idiot, he'll want to know where I am. Kagome sighed and looked to her surroundings once again. It really was quite peaceful sitting here in the grass. It was so quite but so loud. The birds gave off their last chirps before the night's beginning. She could see a swarm of bats start to rise from a cave on another hill. The bugs in the forest, in the field and the grasshopper next to her hand began the chorus of chirps. It's so nice here…I hope Inuyasha doesn't come too quickly…In the valley a bit off she cold see smoke. Hmm…a small village? Or maybe just someone's camp?
She was not very skilled in detecting demons but as far as her abilities let her, she didn't feel much threat from the woods. But, I guess to be safe… She flopped onto her back. Hopefully no one can really see me now… Looking up, all she saw was the tips of the tall grass around her and the twinkling lights in the darkening sky. The Feudal Era sky never ceased to amaze her. Growing up in the polluted skies of the modern era, it was almost impossible to see the stars this bright, but here she could see every single last shining dot.
Then, a light moved over her head. Huh…? And then another and another. A little smile formed on her face. Oh, fireflies. She raised her hand and watched the lights move around her. Her smile got a bit bigger as the memories of doing this with Souta floated across her mind. Little idiot always scared them aw-
“Enjoying ourselves are we?” A male voice spoke from not so far away. Naturally, she jumped right out of her skin. She shot up and looked to the direction of the voice. Who she saw was a teenage male, not that older than she. He was facing the valley and gazing up at the stars like she was a moment before. He looked down at the glowing flies before looking at her.
“W-who are you?” She nervously inquired. He was human, she could tell, but there was something off about his aura. It was like it was…tainted.
“Who am I?” The teen looked up for a moment as in thought, then replied, “Someone who has just had a new lease on life.”
“She noticed it then, the glow from his neck. Shikon no kakera…
“Why do you have Shikon shards in your neck?” She asked trying to fake confidence but more worried than ever. This guy has shards, this could be bad… She examined him more, his aura, she couldn't tell if it was tainted because of the shards or if it was just him. She could tell though, for sure, that this guys was not normal.
“Why do you have shards around your neck?” He asked back. She just rolled her eyes. Okay, so he's not going to give me answers. He was looking into her eyes, she couldn't tell if it was because he wanted an actual answer or what but the amazing blue that his eyes held was dazzling. Okay, he's kinda cute but I got to be careful. He could be a maniac killer for all I know! [A/N: XD!]
“That's none of your business.” She looked away from him. Trying to hide the worry in her face. Kuso! I'm almost- hell, I AM defenseless out here! Why couldn't I have brought my bow with me? Escape route, escape route… Her eyes darted around but she had literally sat in the middle of the field. Too far away from any of the forest line to run without him catching her.
“Well then, I guess it's none of your business why I have them in my neck.” She turned her head back to look at him. She opened her mouth to say something but stopped herself before saying that it actually was her business. That would only lead to more questions and this guy was a stranger. Not one she felt she should tell too many specifics too. He turned his gaze back to where the smoke was coming from the woods. She then noticed that his hair was in a long thick braid down his back. Oh…that's like what Hiten had…
“What are you doing out here in a field like this? Don't you have friends? You don't seem the type that can take care of themselves.” He looked back at her, smirking in a know-it-all way.
“Again, none of your business. And for you information I do have friends!” Please, I've dealt with enough assholes tonight.
“Oh, then why aren't you with them?” He raised his eyebrow.
“Because one of them is being an asshole right now.” She murmured. Stupid Inuyasha…where is he? I guess I can just sit here and talk to this guy to stall but... She looked to the trees again. …maybe I should dash for it.
“An asshole huh? I guess that's reason to not want to be near him, I'm guessing it's a `him'. Women don't usually take the title of `asshole'.” He looked over to see if he was correct. She just nodded. “What'd he do?” She looked down. Like she was going to tell him that. He did though, notice the visible sigh that came from her before she turned back to reply.
“Why are you up here? Or are you the one with no friends?” She looked at him again, trying to change the subject but the mask wasn't fitting very well on her face. They both knew that he could tell.
“I just wanted to be alone for a bit. My friends are hanging out down at our camp.” He nodded his head in the direction of the smoke below, “But I think you have a bit more than wanting to be away from your `asshole friend' on your mind?” He was digging into her privacy with his questions and piercing her confidence with his eyes.
She said nothing, just sat there with fireflies around her head and an uncomfortable silence growing between them. The wind picked up a little and the nighttime chorus remained on beat. The irritating beat. The crickets, the leaves brushing, her heart thumping; she had to intervene.
“My friend, he…” I can't believe I'm telling this to a stranger, “…insulted me.” She brought her knees up and wrapped her arms around her legs, resting her chin on her knees. More silence, he was expecting more than that. She wasn't going to just bawl out and tell him Inuyasha's insults, his arrogance, his idiotic ways, his love for two women…that's if he has love for me. She dropped her head down between her arms now. Maybe I'm the fool…
“There are a lot of ways to insult a person.” He said, looking over at her again. He could see her trying to close up. This girl needed someone to talk to. The breeze started to slow down to almost none.
“Yes there are.” Her reply came from between her knees. She wasn't going to take the bait. He pondered for a second whether he should or not…
“How did he insult you?” `Might as well stop beating around the bush.' He thought. She looked at him again and glared. How dare he! …well, I guess I kinda leapt right into this. She sighed again, and looked up at the sky. Hesitantly, she replied.
“He…he called me fat.” Just over a whisper was how it came but it was enough. He heard her, and as much as he tried to stop it, it came, it came just the same. He smiled. He covered his mouth. And he started to chuckle. The chuckle turned itself into an outright laugh into his hand. Then he brought his head back and laughed to the moon. His laugh was musical but she didn't stop to listen to it, she just got blazing mad like any of us would.
“What are you laughing at!” She yelled, “You're an asshole just like him!” Angry, she took a rock next to her and hurled it at him. It missed thanks to her wonderful aim. Pissed and reassuring her thoughts that this was a waist of time and that she should have ran off back to their hut as soon as he came, she got up an started to walk away.
“Wait! Hey wait!” He called; she could hear him still chuckling as he jogged up behind her. Just keep walking-AH! She felt her shin collide with his foot and his chest and his arms as she tumbled into them. She didn't move for a moment; she was so surprised. He tripped… but for just that second she felt as though she was in a real embrace again. “Hey…I said wait.” He whispered. Reality came back and she shoved his chest away from her and frowned.
“You tripped me!” She yelled. What the hell was that? She could feel her face start to get hot. Who does this guy think he is?
“He breathed out his last chuckles before continuing, “I told you to wait.” She just scowled at him and turned herself around.
“Well you didn't have to trip me to stop me! You could've tapped my shoulder or something!” This was ridiculous, how dare he just make her fall on him like that! So embarrassing…
“Actually I think I did, and I got a reward.” He smiled and peered over her shoulder, raising an eyebrow.
“A reward?” She questioned.
“Yes, you were quite cute when you feel onto me like that.” He started chuckling again and she just irked. And blushed. And whipped herself around again. Hentai! Really cute jerk hentai! Gah! Shut up! You like Inuyasha!…sorta… “I'm sorry I laughed, it's just-“ She cut him off before he could finish.
“Because it's funny! You think so too! Laugh at the girl because she's-“
“Whoa whoa whoa!” He stepped up to her and clamped his hand over her mouth. “Can you give a guy a second?” She pulled his hand off her mouth and took a few steps back.
“I've given guys a few seconds for a long time but they always do something wrong with it!” She tried to glare at him but found it harder than it should be.
“Aw don't go glarin' at me.” He fake-whined. He then sighed, “Listen, I wasn't laughing at you. I was laughing because of how untrue that is.” He seemed sincere but she knew not to trust too soon. “You're quite the opposite, I mean with your little skirt there, that should be enough proof to anyone that you're fine.” That got her blushing.
“Hey you hentai!” She took the fringe of her skirt and pulled it down. He just laughed.
“It's not my fault you walk around in a skirt like that.” He was teasing her again.
“Well it's not my fault you…you…” she looked over him trying find something weird, “…have a stupid purple star on your forehead!” He brought his hand up and rubbed it.
“Hey, no making fun of the star, a'ight.” She just pouted a little bit.
“I will if you stop teasing me.” He looked at her for a little bit.
“I'll stop teasing you if you tell me about this `asshole' friend. Deal?” He crossed his arms and looked at her. She just stood there with her hands behind her back, looking at her feet and contemplating a way to describe Inuyasha. It was a few moments but she soon looked up to meet his eyes.
“He…he's an asshole because…he doesn't know when to shut his mouth. He's kinda thick headed. And doesn't really trust people. He never comforts me when I need to be or leaves me alone when I want to be but…” But… “…he's always there to protect me. He looks over us. I guess he doesn't trust people because he wants to make sure they're safe for us. He's reckless, but I think it's so we don't have to be…” She stopped, she never really thought of why Inuyasha acted the way he did before. Maybe he was an idiot truly because-eh?
He took her chin and lifted her gaze to his. “This friend of yours, he sounds like he has some issues going on but I'm guessing if you are friends with him, he can't be all the bad, ne?” She looked down at his chest plate for a moment.
“Not fully…” She whispered. He touched her chin and she looked up into his eyes again. `Tell me why not.' “Well…um…you see…” She looked down again and nudged her feet before looking up at him. “He…he's still in love with his…I guess you can say his ex…” She had took look to the side at the fleeting fireflies. Kikyo…
“Well, no one's perfect.” She just looked up at him again.
“No, you don't understand, it's more than that!” That feeling was there again, that sad twisted hate she got whenever the subject came up.
“More than tha-“
“He still goes to see her!” Her eyes were starting to water. Two-timing stu… “And everytime he knows she's near, he goes racing off after her!” Oh yeah, the tears were coming. …cking son of a bit…“It's like the second he sees her I don't even exist anymore!” She leaned her head against his chest. …od damned basta… “It's like, just choose already! Stop being nice to me then just run off to her! It's confusing me!” He wrapped his arms around her shaking shoulders. …shole burn in HELL! “Just, stop seeing her! She's gone and it won't happen again…I hope the feelings between you two never happen again…” She hiccuped. She was crying about why her love-interest was retarded in a total stranger's arms and she didn't care… They stood like this for a while. He waited patiently as her sniffles stopped and her shaking subsided. And to her surprise, she didn't want to leave his arms. It was one true sign of someone understanding and caring. She didn't want this moment to slip…
“You also can't forget that all men are idiots.” She looked up at him confused. He just smiled and a small smile cracked across her tear-streaked face. “Ah, now that's the smile I wanted to see.” He brought his gloved hand up and gently wiped her face off. They both just stood there with the fireflies slowly dancing around them. “Girly, men are extremely complicated creatures. Even I know you're not telling me this whole story.” She opened her mouth to explain but he placed a finger over it. “But, whatever it is that's holding him back from you, you just gotta let it flow. Let him figure it out, if he doesn't, well there's a problem, but if he does, you know that's he's matured enough for you. Plus, even if there's all this shit going on, you're still friends with him. If he truly was this bad, you wouldn't be complaining to me about him right now, ne?” He smiled at her. Okay, maybe this guy isn't all that bad either...
She was about to say something when he quirked his head towards and focused in on the woods above them. Then she heard it. The faint cries from her friends. “Well, I'm guessing you're little buddies are looking for you, Kagome.” He said. She smiled having him say her name from her friends' calls. “Well, that was a nice convo' we had. Don't let your boyfriend be a douche bag from now on, y' hear?” She was about to retort that Inuyasha was not her `boyfriend' but he then leaned in and kissed her on the lips. What the… Her eyes widened as pulled back.
“W-what you-!” He jumped back as she swatted at him grinning from ear to ear. He turned around and continued to flaunt down the hill. Ah! Wait a second!
“What's your name?” She shouted. She had to know…
“Bankotsu!”

A/N: Hehe…Inuyasha's a douche bag…hehe…stupid…
