“All right class pipe down!” Ms. Tenkai yelled. The noise of the class slowly settled to a low hiss. Mostly, the talking was by the girls, who were pointing at the new student and whispering behind their hands. Kagome rolled her eyes at them.

“As if he can’t tell they’re talking about him.” She whispered to her friend.

“I know right.” She rolled her eyes too.

“Now, class, this is Inuyasha. He’ll be in this class so please try to be nice to him.” She sighed and looked to Inuyasha. “Now, we’ve already started our semester projects.” She said, “And we have an odd number now.”

“That’s okay. I can do the project by myself.” Inuyasha said.

Kagome looked at Sango, biting her lip. She hated it when people worked alone. Sango nodded. “He can work with us Ms.Tenkai.” Kagome said.

“Oh, that’s so nice of you Kagome.” She smiled. “Wonderful. Inuyasha, you will work with Kagome and Sango.”

“Whatever.” He muttered as he took his seat. Class continued as usual from there.

Kagome went up to Inuyasha after class, to tell him to meet her and Sango in the library after school. She stood next to him and realized how tall he was. He was nearly six feet already and he was only fourteen!

“Did you stay back?” Kagome asked.

“No. Why?” He said, sort of shocked that she would ask that.

“You’re just wicked tall.” Kagome said, shaking her head. “Anyway, meet Song and I in the library after school.” She smiled. “’Kay?”

“Whatever.” He said.

“Don’t whatever me!” She smacked him upside the head.

“Ow.” He said, rubbing the back of his head. “Fine. I’ll be there.” He said mockingly.

“Good.” She smiled and waved. “See ya!”

**

“I just can’t believe you smacked him.” Sango said in a semi-approving tone. “I mean ya don’t know the kid.”

“Whatever. He had it coming with all his stupid ‘whatever’s.” She laughed and suddenly Inuyasha appeared.

“Hey.” He said to them as he sat down.

“Hey.” They said back in unison.

“So, what’s our project on?” he asked.

Kagome and Sango stifled a giggle. “What?” he asked. “What’s so funny?”

“Well, it’s just that, we picked the topic before we knew a boy was going to join our group.” Sango said, still stifling a laugh.

“It’s not about like bras or something stupid is it?” Inuyasha asked, tip the chair back and balancing.

“Lech.” Kagome said. “No. It’s about the Fashion Industry and it’s Cultural Progression.”

“What?” Inuyasha dropped forward loudly and received a few ‘Shhh’s from those studying at the next table.

“You heard.” Kagome rolled her eyes. “Now, go to section eight hundred of the reference and get out these three books for us to look at.”

Inuyasha looked at the list and sighed, getting up to retrieve the books. He was only agreeing to the stupid assignment so he’d have half a chance to make a friend. As he turned back toward the table where Sango and Kagome were, carrying the three books they asked for he heard something that made him blush, and smile.

“Isn’t he wicked cute though?” Sango was saying.

He heard Kagome sigh. “Well,” then she laughed. “Hell yeah!” The girls laughed and stopped abruptly when Inuyasha came back.

“Awesome.” Kagome said. “I’m sorry about being so mean before.” She said, popping her gum.

“It’s cool.” Inuyasha said.

“Cool.”

**

“He’s not here yet.” Kagome said. She was on the phone with Sango. “I’m tellin’ ya, he hates me.”

“No he doesn’t.” Sango stopped to cough for a minute. “He’ll be there. I’m sorry I can’t help finish the project. I really do have a cold.”

“I believe you. I just wish he would get here so we could finish this stupid project. We are like an hour from being done, and I don’t want to do it myself!”

Kagome heard the doorbell and looked out the living room window. She saw Inuyasha standing there, his parent waiting in the driveway for someone to answer. Kagome smiled. “Okay he showed. Gotta go Song.”

“Later Kags.”

“Hey Yash!” Kagome said as she let him in. She waved good-bye to his Dad and closed the door. “Your dad drives a sweet car.” Kagome said, crossing to the kitchen.

“That’s not my dad.” Inuyasha said.

“Oh.”

“It’s my brother.” He explained.

“Oh.” Kagome said again. “Well, the car’s cool.”

“Yeah.” Inuyasha agreed.

“So, do you want a tour of the house? Or do you want to just finish the project?” Kagome asked.

“Uh,” he looked at his watch. “Well my brother will be back at nine. So, we should finish up the project.”

“Okay!” Kagome went to the kitchen. “Do you want something to drink or a snack?”

“Uh sure.” He set his backpack down on the counter.

“What do you want?” She asked, opening the cupboards.

“Do you have any ramen?” he asked, searching through them.

“Ramen? As a snack?”

“Uh, yeah.” He said as though it were obvious.

“Whatev’. Yeah we have some.” Kagome took out the ramen and began making a package for Inuyasha.

She took an apple and a bottle of water into the living room, while he brought his bowl of ramen.

“If you spill a drop of that on the carpet my mum will kill you.” She said, laying out their poster board.

“Noted.”

“So, where should the information go? Scattered, at the top or at the bottom?” Kagome asked, looking at the printed out notes they had typed.

“I like it scattered I think. It’s more creative.” He held up one of the cut outs and positioned it at a side angle on the left side. “Just kind of spice it up.” He said casually.

Kagome smiled and laughed.

“What’s so funny?” He asked.

“You.” She said, doing as he suggested.

The project was done in no time and Kagome took him on a tour of the house. “As you know, that’s the kitchen, and this is the living room.” Kagome said, leading him by the arm. They went upstairs. “This is the hallway,” she said dramatically. “In here is the study slash my grandfather’s bedroom. Over there is my mum’s room. Down way at the end of the hall is my brother’s room. That’s the bathroom, and this is my room.” Kagome opened the door. Inuyasha’s eyes immediately tried to adjust to the pink. Overwhelming quantities of pink spread throughout the room. “Oh, and there’s another bathroom downstairs, but it’s not very reliable.” Kagome shrugged.

They headed back down stairs. Inuyasha sat next to Kagome on the couch. “So, want to watch TV?” She asked.

“Sure.”

“You’re just a ball of talk aren’t ya?” she rolled her eyes. “What does your dad due for work?” she asked.

“I don’t have one.” He said.

“Oh.” She bit her lip. “Sorry.”

“It’s not your fault.”

“I don’t have one either.” She said, trying to compensate in some way. “He died when Souta was little. Souta’s my little brother. I don’t really remember my dad anymore.”

“Me either.” Inuyasha said.

“What about your Mom?” Kagome asked.

“Can we not talk about this?” He asked turning the TV on.

“Sorry.” She said again. “I didn’t know it upset you.”

“It doesn’t.” he lied.

“Okay.” She said, letting the subject drop.

A short silence passed and Kagome broke it again. “Are they real?”

“Are what real?” he asked, though he knew.

“You’re ears.” She said.

“Yep.”

Kagome didn’t like the sound of her next question ‘what are you’. So she asked it in a different way. “How did you get ‘em?”

“My dad.” He said. When Kagome continued to stare at him he said. “I’m only half.” Kagome knew what that meant. He was a half-demon. Not full. There were plenty of full demons at her school, but they all wore concealment charms, due to the order of some law passed back before she was born. “Inu-Yokai.” He continued.

“Cool.” She said.

“It doesn’t freak you out?” He asked.

“Why should it?” She asked back, looking at him.

He shrugged.

“Can I touch ‘em?”

“NO!” He shouted. “That’s just weird!” He rolled his eyes.

“Whatever.” But she touched them anyway. Inuyasha tried to pull away from her touch, but he didn’t really mind as much as he fussed. “Thanks.” She stopped petting his ears and turned back to the TV smiling.

A half an hour later there was a knock on the door. Kagome ran to it and smiled at what was, Kagome could only assume, Inuyasha’s brother. “Hey!” She said. “It’s nice to meet you! I’m Kagome.” She smiled.

“Hello Kagome. My name is Sesshomaru.” He said. His voice was like ice. It was cold and unforgiving. But Kagome liked it. She thought it was soothing.

“I’ll see you at school Kagome.” Inuyasha said, and at a stern look from Sesshomaru added, “Thank you for having me over tonight.”

Kagome smiled and hugged him. “You’re welcome!” she said laughing. “I’ll see you Monday. Nice meeting you Sesshomaru!”

“You as well Kagome. You as well.”
