He had refused to seal the Kazaana. He was going to suck in Naraku's heart and destroy them both, for her sake. He was going to sacrifice himself so that her brother's shikon fragment would not have to be used by Kikyou; he was going to give Kohaku another chance at life. For her sake.
He was going to save her another painful loss, perhaps without realizing he would be bestowing her with another.
“San...go…”
She looked into his pain-filled eyes and his blood and toxin ridden face, and felt her eyes begin to tear.
“I'm…sorry…”
