Chapter 5: Chill of
Sunrise
Souta sat outside his sister's door, listening to her sobs. He leaned against the wall, where he could see Naraku's form silhouetted by afternoon sun filtering through the window. Oh how he hated that man. Several times he had desired to drive a knife between his ribs, but he didn't have the courage to do so. The only time he'd come close was when he'd learned of his plans to marry Kagome to Koga. In an attempt to salvage his sister's future and happiness, he confronted Naraku. The argument didn't last long, as he soon found himself pinned to the wall by his throat. When his uncle had finally released him, at the point where his lungs were burning and his vision blackened, he slid to the floor. After a few hard kicks to his torso, he was left there to suffer in his apparent disrespect of the man.
He never told Kagome, because it would only make her feel worse about her situation. He knew she worried about him, about his safety and wellbeing. Naraku saw to it that he worked from dawn until dusk. Even after he was tired from a long day at the mill, he wasn't permitted to retire to his bed. The man demanded he accompany him to the tavern, where Naraku gambled and drank his hard earned money away. It would be past midnight, after he supported his drunken uncle to his sleeping quarters, before he could lay himself to rest for the night.
Even now, he couldn't bring himself to open her door and at least hold her as she wept. What comfort could he offer her? He had thought that perhaps Kane would've done what he couldn't for Kagome. But then he had seen her ride up with him. When she'd left, he had been proud of her for finally standing up for herself. While he didn't trust Tanaka to not take advantage of his sister, he was thankful in the belief that she had gone to him for help. His opinion of the man was now further soured.
The townsfolk's view on Kane Tanaka was disapproving at best. In their eyes he was a rogue, a brigand. Older women and men looked down their noses at him. From what anyone could tell, he didn't work, at least not in their village. He was periodically seen in the bars, whether it was drinking a brew by himself or gambling with the lot. Those who lost to him called him a swindler, always bellowing his name with swine and cheat. Despite the tales of him being a smuggler or a thief, young women whispered of his dashing looks and charm. After time, even they stopped such banter, as he never paid a one of them any mind. So when he appeared to be enamored with Kagome, jealousy turned into filthy lies.
He would keep watch over her this day and through the night. As much as he would like to see her flee from this demise, he knew her safety lay in doing what has been expected of her. Souta prayed that whoever came out on top tomorrow would treat her with the respect and dignity she deserved. There had to be someone who knew what a beautiful gift she was. At some point her tears stopped, and Souta sighed, closing his eyes and napping.

Kane lingered after Kagome entered the house. He wanted to make sure that Naraku didn't lay a hand on her. In consideration that no man would want a battered woman, he didn't believe he had such a worry. However, the weight of his guilt was suffocating him. Listening as her uncle stated his plans, he winced in expectation of her opposition. When it didn't come, he strained his ears but could hear nothing until a door shut somewhere in the house. Making his way to the back of the dwelling, he looked in one window and then the next, until he found Kagome's room. There on the floor, he saw her devastation and cursed himself for putting her through this suffering.
Inuyasha's title didn't give him much more than ownership of the lands. His hand didn't reach further than the individuals and families residing on his vast property. Consequently, half the taxes that they paid went to the king. The village in which she lived was not under his thumb. He could only voice his suggestions when it came to law at the tri-monthly council meetings. Even then, he was only one voice. Despite the treachery Naraku imposed against the Taisho's, he could only enforce against him for the money owed. It was frowned upon for him to take the matter solely into his hands, but the right wasn't entirely unfounded. As much as he wanted to extinguish Naraku like the bug he was, he had to treat the issue on a political level. One man was not worth the repercussions he'd face under the scrutiny of the higher lords.
However, Kagome Higurashi proved to be worth it, but he had to be careful. When she fell into fitful rest, he retreated back to his horse. Before the day closed, he needed to set things in motion.

Kagome woke, her body feeling stiff. Lifting herself from the floor, she glanced outside and noted the sun had set. The moon was high in the black sky, telling her she'd also slept halfway through the night. Stretching her knotted muscles, she leaned herself against a nearby wall. 'Sold, I'm going to be sold as if I'm not even human.' Tears pricked her eyes again, but she did nothing to stop them. She considered herself a strong individual, but now she felt broken. Thoughts of ending her life, to end the fear and anguish of what lay ahead, crossed her mind. Shaking her head, she knew it wasn't an option. For her brother, for her parents, she couldn't make such a crucial mistake. Somehow, somewhere deep within her, she had to find the courage to hold her head high. She had to be the better person and regain what she has lost.
Feeling thirsty and slightly hungry, she stood and padded to her door. Opening it quietly, she stifled a yelp when her brother jumped awake. "Souta?" His eyes instantly cleared from sleep and he stood, embracing her swiftly.
"Kagome, I wish there were something I could do." He stated against her hair. His arms tightened around her before he released her.
"There's nothing you can do, Souta." He looked as worn as she felt. "Tomorrow morning will come, and I will stand tall. I have to." She said the last part in a whisper.
"I'm scared for you."
"I'm terrified, but it may not be so bad." Kagome attempted a smile. "Promise me that you will visit me, wherever I may be?"
"Of course." He took her arm lightly. "Are you hungry?"
She nodded, allowing him to walk her to the kitchen. They quietly fixed cold pork sandwiches and glasses of sweetened lemon juice. Naraku had fallen asleep in the chair, but neither wanted to wake him.

The sun rose, bringing with it trepidation. Kagome bathed, more so to relax the tenseness from her body than anything else. Naraku had pounded on the door in the middle, commanding her to put on her best clothing. Stepping out of the tub, she wrapped a linen around herself and left to her room, once she had made sure her uncle was nowhere in the vicinity.
Looking through her chest, she dug to the bottom and pulled out a sundress that had belonged to her mother. The baby blue fabric was light and decorated with delicate mauve roses. Light green leaves were intricately woven around the blossoms. She pulled it over her undergarments. The neckline was square, with billowed short sleeves. Its length reached mid-calf and hung loosely. Digging around she found the white belt that accessorized it. Fastening it around her waist, she walked to the small mirror that adorned her wall.
Kagome ran a brush through her hair until it was dry, and then pulled it up in a bun on top of her head. She fastened it with a brooch clip. "That will have to do." She sighed, getting up and pulling her good white shoes from under her cot. They were plain leather, but the straps were interwoven to form a closed toe sandal.
Naraku opened the door without even announcing his entrance. He gave her a once over and said, "That will have to do. Come now, they're expecting us." His grip on her arm was anything but gentle, but she didn't protest. She just kept reminding herself that after today, she was done with him forever.

Dozens of people gathered at the center hall. In the seats were folks who only wished to watch the proceeds. Standing by the small stage were several men, most bickering amongst themselves. Kagome had followed her uncle through the back door, her heart beating rapidly in her chest. The moment she stepped foot on the stairs leading to the stage, she could feel fear grip her again. She saw the pastor standing off to the right and wondered how he could willingly assist with this event. Could not even a son of God stand up and help her?
Many faces in the crowd were familiar. She recognized many of the suitors that she had turned away. Hiten and Manten were standing at the front of group, surrounded by Bankotsu and his brothers. Houjo was standing quietly towards the back. The rest were faces she didn't know, both young and old. Sitting in chairs, whispering to one another, were many of the villagers.
Naraku stepped to the podium, holding Kagome by the arm, and cleared his throat to get everyone's attention. The noise died down, and the silence was foreboding to her. In the next few minutes, her life was over as she knew it. The room seemed to close in on her, and all she could see were the sympathetic gazes from women and the hungry stares from the men in front of her. Men who she would rather die than have touch her.
"This morning, I am concluding my ward's search for a husband. Within my rights, as she has not chosen one for herself, we will start the bidding at 500. This lovely girl will make a decent wife and bare heirs to your family name."
Kagome glared at Naraku's side, wanting to scoff at his charade of speaking so highly of her.
"Do I hear 500?"
Several voices rose up, shouting out figures in response to the last wager. She felt humiliated and belittled. Trying to keep her head high, she scanned the room with one last sliver of hope. In a corner, Koga leaned against the wall with a smirk of amusement upon his lips. She quickly averted her gaze, trying to wipe his smug expression from her mind's eye.
Kane hadn’t even shown up, she realized and felt further betrayed by him. "The bidding is at 2000, do I hear 2500?" Naraku’s voice ripped through her thoughts, and so she pushed Kane from her mind.
"2500!" Houjo declared almost too quietly.
"3000!" Hiten yelled with a grin. Kagome's stomach twisted.
"We have 3000, do I hear 3500?"
"Psht! 3500!" Renkotsu, one of Bankotsu's brothers wagered and the whole lot cheered. 'Anyone but them! Please!' She prayed silently. If she were sold to that band of hooligans, she would lose her averseness to suicide.
"8500 dollars," a voice stated from the back of the room. Naraku's hand tightened on her arm. Everyone turned around to see who had made the bid.
A short, plump old man pushed his way through the throng of gawking onlookers.
Naraku huffed in impatience. "8500?"
The man lifted his balding head, pushing thin glasses up on his nose. "That's what I said."
"Alright… the bid is at 8500. Would anyone like to top that?"
"No wench is worth that much!" Manten exclaimed, several others grunting in agreement.
"Anybody?" Naraku allowed time for someone to bid higher. Nothing but mild curses and grumbling filled the room. Kagome started to panic, her eyes wide. 'No, please. I don't want to be wed to this old man!' Her gaze centered on Kane, which didn't seem to be fazed at all by her current situation.
"Then this bidding is closed. Sir, would you step forward and we will draw the papers." Kagome's body trembled and hot tears trickled down her cheeks. She took a few steps back, reaching a hand out for something to support her, for Naraku had released her limb. Run, she wanted so badly to flee, but it was over. There was nothing she could do. The elder walked up to where her uncle stood.
"Your name?"
"I am called Myoga."
"And your surname, so Pastor Joseph can write out the marriage certificate?"
"Oh, I won't be marrying the lass!" He exclaimed with a smile. "As lovely as she is, I believe I'd be a bit much for her." Kagome stared at him in disbelief as he winked at her.
"Then who are you representing?" Naraku asked impatiently.
"I am my lord's advisor. He had business to attend to, but I assure you, he will be present shortly for the ceremony."
'How hospitable of him.' Kagome thought sarcastically.
"And your lord is?" Naraku drawled.
"Lord Inuyasha Taisho, sir." Her eyes widened, recognizing the name of the lord who had visited her home not too long ago.
Her uncle made a choking cough sound. "Lord Inuyasha?"
"Yes, and I am to have you sign this document-" He pulled a scrolled parchment from under his arm. "That declares your debt to him paid." After rummaging through the pages of the ledger, he brought out a small envelope. "And here is your 500 dollars."
Naraku clenched his fist. Any thought of scheming his way out of paying that pompous half breed were thwarted right under his nose. Angrily, he signed the certificate releasing Kagome to the lord. Taking the parchment from the man's hand, he scribbled his name across the document and threw it back at him. Grabbing the offered envelope, he glared at the girl next to him. She had ruined his arrangement with Koga and that anger resurfaced. He should be satisfied that she would spend the rest of her days with the one thing she feared the most, but that wasn't enough. He brought his hand back, with the intention of taking his loss out of her face, but his hand was caught in a crushing grip before he could make contact.
"I suggest you keep your hands off of what is mine."
Kagome had prepared herself to feel the strike of her uncle's fist, and had closed her eyes in the anticipation. When she heard the growled demand, she slowly opened them. There stood the hanyou lord. He was a head taller than her, his silver hair flowing freely down his back. His attire was formal, a white shirt that was unbuttoned at the neck, black form fitting slacks, black boots, and a grey vest. Amber eyes narrowed in annoyance, he had Naraku's fist closed within his own, and her uncle's face was twisted in pain.
"Take her, I'm done with her." Naraku sneered.
Inuyasha released his hand, dismissing him without further confrontation. Naraku turned and stormed away, and so he addressed the pastor. "Come now, pastor, I have places to be."
"Here, my lord, just sign here." Myoga pointed to the line on the marriage certificate, and Inuyasha took the pen from his hand and did so.
The older man smiled warmly at Kagome and handed her a pen as well. "You need to do the same, Lady Kagome."
With a shaky hand, she signed her name. The pen dropped from her fingers when she was done, but she didn't make a move to pick it up.
Pastor Joseph spoke, "Inuyasha Taisho and Kagome Higurashi…
Do you both come freely, and without reservation, desiring to commit yourselves to one another in this covenant of marriage?"
She wanted to scream out, ‘No! I don't come freely! I have every reservation, and I beg you to release m’!" Instead, she bit her tongue and barely heard Inuyasha's affirmation of “I do.” With a broken voice, she answered as well.
"Inuyasha, will you have Kagome to be your wife, to live together in the covenant of marriage? Will you love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others, be faithful to her as long as you both shall live?"
He wanted to turn to her, grasp her hands in his own and admit that he would do just that and more. To be able to erase the sadness from her disposition, to bring the smile he was so sorely missing right now to her face, would be an elation.
"I will," he replied, keeping his eyes forward.
"Kagome, will you have Inuyasha to be your wedded husband, to live together in the covenant of marriage? Will you love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health, forsaking all others, be faithful to him as long as you both shall live?"
Could she? Would she ever be able to love this man… or youkai… half human? Or would she forever cower in his shadow? She wanted so desperately to be standing here with the man she truly loved. She wanted to give her heart without hesitation, to feel each of these words flow through her in all happiness. It was not to be… her dream of love was as unreachable as the stars in the heavens.
Kagome choked out, "I will." How could she make a promise that her heart didn't follow?
The pastor sighed, “There it is then. You are now man and wife.” Kagome looked up at the man, noting the slight displeasure in his voice. Pastor Joseph met her gaze, placing his hand on her shoulder and squeezing lightly, before shaking his head. He turned and bowed to Inuyasha and then left the room.
Myoga cleared his throat, earning the attention of both individuals. “My Lord, Kaede sent these. She thought they might come in handy.”
Inuyasha took the box, opening it to find two rings nestled in velvet cushion. His brows furrowed as he recognized them as his parents' wedding bands. He'd spoken to the old woman at some time about his parents, telling her that all he had of them besides the manor were these rings. His father had kept his mother's after she died, and had placed his own with it when he could no longer see it upon his finger. The thought of giving such a gift to Kagome brought a sad joy to his heart. He removed them from their enclosing and handed that back to his advisor.
“Would you allow me the honor, Kagome?” Inuyasha took her trembling hand, so small and delicate. She kept her eyes averted, much to his disappointment. He wanted her to see the meaning in his gaze. He slipped his mother's ring, an exquisite piece of jewelry, on her forth finger.
Kagome couldn’t bring herself to look at him. She felt the weight of the ring, pulling her hands to her waist and clasping them together. “Thank you,” she murmured.
“Perhaps someday you will be able to feel the same happiness, wearing that ring, as my mother did so many years ago,” Inuyasha stated gently. She nodded slightly. He wished he could remove the smell of anguish and fear from her scent. He left his father’s ring in the box, shutting it, and placing it inside his coat.
Myoga asked, "Well, then, shall I bring the carriage around?"
Inuyasha placed a gentle hand under her chin, pulling her face up to meet his eyes. “Do not fret, dear Lady. You are safe with me, I assure you.” He stepped away from her and addressed his servant. “Yes, bring the carriage, but I will ride my mount. I will see you at the manor.”
"Yes, my lord." Myoga retrieved the document Pastor Joseph had signed, and placed the certificate in his vest. Taking Kagome's hand, he ushered her along.
Feeling like a drone, she followed him out of the building to the coach. He assisted her inside and told the coachman to take them home. 'Home, such a concept eludes me.' She thought.
When they arrived, she was met with familiar faces. However, she couldn't find the emotional strength to return their wholesome greetings.
"She's had a long morning, Sango. Why don't you show her to her bedchambers so she can rest for a while?" Kaede patted Kagome's back tenderly.
The manse didn't strike her as magnificent as it had the first time she'd been through it. Even as they went up the stairs and passed areas she had yet to see, she paid none of it any mind. Kagome felt numb, but perhaps that was better.
Sango finally stopped at two double doors, turning the gold handle of one. Leading her inside, she pulled open an armoire and handed her a nightgown. "If you wish to rest, you can change out of your dress." She laid the garment across the bed. "When it comes to lunch time, one of us will come up and check on you. You're welcome to eat in here if you don't feel like coming down to the dining room."
"Thank you," Kagome managed.
"This is Inuyasha's chambers, but I suppose it's yours now as well. So make yourself at home." With a sympathetic smile, Sango left the room, closing the door behind her.
Suddenly, Kagome could feel the blood pumping through her veins again. She laid herself on the made up bed for fear of falling over. The numbness evaporated and was replaced with a chill so deep, not even the plush blankets she lay upon would warm her. 'His chambers?' She had bound herself to him as a wife. After the expense he paid, surely he'd expect no less than for her to act as one. That meant sharing his chambers… sharing his bed. No doubt his expectations would reach as far as for her to freely give herself to him, even if he hadn't kissed her. No matter how deeply she searched within herself, there was no way she could willingly do that. Even now, visions of claws and fangs tearing through her tender flesh flashed through her mind. Shuttering, she lay on her side, pulling her legs up to her chest. With a whimper she hugged herself, wondering if she'd ever feel warmth in her life again.
Souta sat outside his sister's door, listening to her sobs. He leaned against the wall, where he could see Naraku's form silhouetted by afternoon sun filtering through the window.
