My inspiration for this story came from two of my all-time favorite romances… Inuyasha and Kathleen E. Woodiwiss’ A Rose in Winter. This fanfic is a crossover between the two, set in 19th century England. I hope you enjoy! Thanks!
Summary:AU Inu/Kag From the moment he met her, Inuyasha knew she'd be his undoing. Once content in his life as a rogue lord, he found himself wanting the very thing he couldn't have. The only thing protecting Kagome was her innocence, but she will soon learn that temptation knows no boundaries.
Chapter 1: Upon the Wings of a Storm
Holding tight to the mare's mane, she allowed the whipping wind to dry her angry tears. 'How could he?' Her jet black hair trailed behind her lithe form as she urged the horse faster. Rolling hills flashed by in a blur of green, while tall trees bowed in her passing as the gusting current picked up about the land. No matter how far she got from the manor, she was no closer to recapturing her dreams. They'd been shattered into thin air when her uncle announced his decision to wed her to Koga Ookami in the next month. 'He didn't even ask me!' Seething, she wished Naraku to the bowels of hell for taking away the freedoms of her own heart. The worst thought, however, was that there wasn't a damn thing she could do about it. Her feelings had no significance, and she wondered what she had done to deserve such a fate.
Kagome Higurashihadbeen the most eligible maiden in her village. Suitors came from all over the Western Territory at the announcement of her sixteenth birthday two months prior. Her birth was of noble blood on her father's side, and she was nothing short of beautiful. Her long hair flowed down her back in ebony waves, framing her petite build. She had her mother's ivory skin, complimented by her father's grey-brown eyes. Despite her lineage, she had no dowry, thanks to her greedy uncle. Therefore, it was her enchanting beauty that brought her acclamation, which she could very well do without. Especially when it came from the slobbering wolf youkai who'd had his eye on her for the past couple years. 'He has no business seeking me!' Koga was already married. Yes, that's right, her uncle had promised her to a life as a mistress, no better than a bed warmer.
Suppose it was her fault for being so fickle, but why should she suffer because he was impatient to marry her to the wealthiest suitor? Since he'd acquired custody of Kagome and her two years younger brother, Souta, he'd also laid claim to her parents' inheritance. It took no time for him to exhaust it, in what means, she dared not comprehend. Now he wanted to use her to get to someone else's fortune, the dirty worm. As most women, she longed to marry for love, not money. Apparently that concept eluded him, as he sent the most undesirable men to come calling.
Who could blame her for turning away the suitors? Houjo had a handsome face and he was nothing but sweet, however his personality was a bore. Conversation was nearly nonexistent, and he blushed more than an innocent in a men's bathing room. Manten was heavy and prematurely balding, and he toted on his brother like a puppy. Speaking of his brother, Hiten, the man had anger issues and was too rough around the edges for her. Not to mention he was a pervert, as he had tried to touch her improperly every chance he got. Then there was the seven brigands, who couldn't care less which one she married, as long as they all got their share. The thought of Bankotsu and his brothers made her shiver in disgust and fear.
The sky darkened as thunderclouds rumbled above her, fitting her mood perfectly, but soured it further when it opened up and poured down upon her. "Ease up, Aska." She grabbed the rein, pulling back to slow the horse down, and urging her towards the treeline at a canter. Sheets of precipitation coated the ground, making it muddy, and unfortunate for the pair, slippery. The Appaloosa lost her footing and slid down the hillside, jostling Kagome from her back and landing on her own side at the bottom. Although the fall wasn't incredibly far, and she'd been lucky that the horse hadn't rolled on top of her, she twisted her leg during the descent. Righting herself with a wince, she wobbled to her fallen animal. "Oh, Aska! I'm so sorry." The mare had shook herself and stood, and much to Kagome's relief, was not visibly hurt. Glancing back up the incline, she realized they'd have to wait for the rain to let up some before trying to ascend. Wishing she'd brought an overcoat, she huddled against the large greyish animal for shelter from the wind and water.
"Could my day possibly get worse?" Kagome grumbled, her face turned to the heavens, her eyes closed. A bolt of lightning clapped through the air, startling her, and she pressed closer to her mount. "Do you think I've angered the fates, Aska?"
He'd been surveying the grounds when the sound of thundering hooves caught his attention. A few yards ahead of him, a horse ran by, the agile form of a woman on its back. The rider hadn't even noticed him, as she was intent on driving the horse to the ends of the earth from the looks of it. With a curious grin, he tapped the side of his steed, galloping after her.
Keeping his attention to the lumbering clouds, he wondered if he should forget the insignificant chase and retire home where it would be dry and warm. Seconds later, the sky roared its intentions and proved his pondering to be futile as he was soaked under torrential rain. Cursing his horrible luck, he decided he had nothing left to lose and continued after the fleeing girl.
With a frustrated groan, he watched the maid tumble down the hill. "Should've went home." He hastened his advance, eager to reprimand this crazy lass for being on his land and being so clumsy. When he peaked the mound, the rebuke died on his lips at the sight before him. Cringing against her ride, the drenched belle provoked his body into betraying his nonchalant objective. Her tan riding breeches and white shirt were wet through, leaving nothing to the imagination of her sensuous curves. Long black tresses plastered themselves against her shoulders and back, some falling to her face. 'Damned if I'm not cast dead in my spot, she's a sight to behold.' Clearing his throat, he addressed the young lady, "Miss, I do believe you must be the loveliest drowned rat I've ever seen." Startled, she raised her head to meet him, her dynamic eyes, laced by dark wet lashes, focusing immediately on his. "I do believe you'll catch your death of cold if you stay down there."
Kagome was surprised to hear someone speaking to her but was even more effected when they locked gazes. Shadowed by a dark brown wide brimmed hat, his eyes were the deepest blue, almost purple in their hue, and alluring in their brilliance. His jawline was chiseled, with high cheekbones and a gentle sloping forehead, offering a handsomely rugged contour. Ignoring the flip of her stomach, she straightened, "Well, sir, I hadn't intended on waiting out the storm here. My horse fell down the hill, and I'm afraid I cannot stand on my left ankle." She consciously moved further behind the animal, knowing the state of her clothes was most likely inappropriate. "I don't want to risk injuring Aska, so I've decided I would wait until the rain died down."
"It's only going to get slicker. I recommend allowing me to help you out of your rut." Maneuvering his horse, he started to make his way carefully towards her.
Her mouth opened in astonishment, "Are you mad? Twill do us no good if you happen to fall as well." She followed his movement with a glare, huffing silently as he reached bottom.
The man offered her a smirk as he landed beside her and dismounted, "No fears, Milady." He removed his coat, draping it around her shoulders. "This should offer a little warmth, although it's not nearly as appealing." She could see the gleam in his eye as his gaze traveled the length of her.
Pulling the garment around herself, she glared at him, "I would appreciate it if you'd keep your eyes to yourself."
"The sight of you is strongly alluring, and I cannot help myself," he bowed, "Ma'am." He straightened, and without deliberation, she found herself hefted into his arms.
"What on earth are you doing?" Her cheeks blazed as one of his hands rested under her breast, the other on her thigh.
"I am merely trying to help. You said yourself that you cannot walk. Do you aim to fly home?" Chuckling at her indignant sigh, he promptly placed her upon his saddle.
She watched as he secured a lead to her mare, taking the time to fully take in his appearance. His eyes weren't his only good feature, and she was sure he had little competition for the ladies. His obsidian hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, reaching just past his shoulder blades. His shirt clung to him, showing the definition of his back muscles. When he turned to face her, it proved the same for his front, for the fabric clung to the stark ripples of his abdomen. Her admiration stopped as her eyes wandered below his waist, and she quickly adverted her gaze, her cheeks burning. His soaked breeches did little to subdue his manliness.
He caught her in the middle of her admiration and grinned when she looked away, her embarrassment clearly written upon her face. Putting his foot in the stirrup, he swung himself up behind her, wrapping on arm around her waist. She stiffened against him, but he ignored it, spurring his gilding up the hill. The rain still pelted them relentlessly, and he hunched himself over, trying to shield her small form. After a moment, she relaxed against him, and he smiled to himself.
"Where to madam?"
"I reside in the village a mile or so south of here, if you wouldn't mind."
"Not at all," he answered. Part of him would be happy to see her off and never lay eyes on her again. He had his share of women throwing fallacious intents upon his lap, but he prided himself on thwarting their efforts. There was no need to grow attached, and he had no desire for domestication. His spirit was free, and he liked it that way. But this one, this slender slip of a female, managed to stir an ache within him at one glance. He didn't even know her name, and already he was wondering what it would take to break down her guard and have her laid beneath him. Her melodic voice broke the silence.
"That small barn is mine, sir. I would like to get Aska into her stable and check her for injuries," Kagome pointed a hundred yards ahead of them. He hadn't even realized he reached the village through his pondering. When he acknowledged the barn and adjoining house, he smothered a frown.
He had returned home to his family's old manor only three weeks ago, after nearly a ten year absence. When his father died, his brother had taken him and left for the American colonies, for fear that they would follow their father to the grave. Sesshoumaru had left the overseeing of his lands to the only man their father had trusted, Rinji Higurashi. He collected taxes from the tenants, saw to the keep-up of the land, and also had the main dwelling serviced twice a year. A few months later, when they had heard of his passing, the taiyoukai had found himself stuck in political matters and unable to return to the estate. Weeks later, a letter was received stating that Naraku Onigumo, brother-in-law to Rinji, was inheriting Rinji's wealth and taking custody of his children. It was offered that he would take over Rinji's duties as well, if permitted. With no other options available, his brother had made arrangements to meet in person and dictate how things were to be done. Ten years later, Inuyasha grew tired of America and decided to return home, much preferring to follow in his father's footsteps.
From the moment he stepped foot in his manor, Naraku had become a thorn in his side. Not only had he wronged the family name by mistreating the tenants and raising taxes unnecessarily, but he'd also neglected his other duties. He had sent several notices to the man, demanding an appointment to go over the logs and usurp command over the Taisho estate once again, but his callings had been ignored.
It seemed that the lovely dove in his arms was none other than the fair Kagome Higurashi. Something twisted in his gut as he stared down at the damp woman in front of him. 'I'll be damned.' They reached the barn, now all too soon for him. He helped her to slide down from his mount and jumped down after her to untie her Appaloosa.
Kagome fidgeted against the lingering ardor of his touch, desperately wishing him on his way. "I thank you for your assistance, sir." Dropping her head, "I fear I have no meaning of payment." Her heart leapt in her chest as his fingers enclosed on her chin, lifting it. Even as her knees shook, she forced herself to calm down before she made a fool of herself. How was it that she could turn down every suitor that came knocking on her door, but she could melt at his feet with his mere presence? The look in his eyes as his gaze drifted to her lips would make any woman squirm.
His fingers drifted down her jawline, to her neck, leaving a trail of goose-bumps in their wake. Slipping the now dampened coat from her shoulders, he draped it over one arm, his eyes never leaving hers. "There is no need of payment, for the pleasure of meeting you is enough. Now, you're going to come down with sickness if you don't go inside and change out of those clothes."
Kagome let out the breath she hadn't realized she was holding. When he stepped back, she was relieved and... disappointed? Taking the lead of her horse, she cleared her throat, "I must get Aska fed, and then I will tend to my needs. However, I am not the only one soused. Perhaps I can at least offer a warm fire and something to take the chill off?" She put the animal in the stall, filling its trough and checking the water before picking up the brush.
"That would be hospitable, Miss," he nodded his head in gratitude.
She could feel his eyes on her as she tended to her horse, and a smile touched her lips briefly. 'He is only a man,' she reminded herself.
=====
Grabbing three logs, she hauled them to the fireplace, setting them ablaze one at a time and poking the embers until it burned hot. Her 'rescuer' emerged from the bedroom, his wet clothes draped over his robed arm.
"My uncle's robe fits you at least. It shouldn't take too long for these to dry." Kagome placed them in front of the fire, careful to keep them far enough away that they wouldn't catch. "If you'll excuse me, I'm going to change."
"By all means," he smiled, gesturing for her to take her leave.
Settling himself in the armchair nearest the blaze, Inuyasha propped his feet on the ottoman. His thoughts wandered to the girl in the next room, and he again found himself in disbelief. Wasn't it just a couple years ago that she was three feet tall, with pigtail braids and dirty knees? Where had the time gone?
He hadn't much time to think it over before the front door opened, allowing in the nights gale and a foul stench. Forcing down his scowl, the young man turned and bowed his head to Naraku as he entered.
"Who the hell are you?" He swaggered a bit as he approached the chair, dripping on the wooden floor. "I don't recall setting up an appointment tonight, and I definitely don't remember you." His eyes narrowed as he studied the man sitting in his chair.
"Forgive me sir, my name is Kane Tanaka," he bowed lower, a smirk lining his face. "You daughter has been very kind." He rose with a smile, meeting Naraku's furious gaze.
Her uncle was fuming, "I know exactly who you are, you conniving bastard!" Taking in his attire, he stormed past him, throwing open the bedroom door and revealing a very startled, barely dressed Kagome.
"You little tramp!" He grabbed her by her hair. "What have you been doing with this degenerate?!"
"Uncle!" She tried to pry herself out of his grasp, "I haven't done anything! I was caught in the storm and he merely helped me home! I was being generous!" She could smell the liquor on his breath, which wasn't an abnormal occurrence.
"Generous?" Naraku sneered, pulling harder. "You were being generous? Tell me, did you lay for him?"
Kagome gasped in offense, "How dare you!" Pulling her tendrils from his hand with a slight wince, she stepped back from him. "How dare you insinuate that I would do such a thing!"
"Sir, I must attest, she was only helping me dry my clothing before I head home." Kane bowed again. I will be redressing and leaving you folks to your evening.
Naraku sent him a glare that promised death, "I hope never to see you again, Mr. Kane Tanaka." There was no mistaking the growled threat.
Kane disappeared in the other room, and came back out minutes later, gesturing his thanks to Kagome. Naraku had obviously considered the situation handled and had retired to his own bedroom for the evening.
"My apologies, Miss Higurashi. I hadn't meant for this uproar."
Kagome blushed, "'Tis no matter, sir. I'm thankful for your help and pleased I could repay you, even if it were only a little." She opened the door for him.
Kane grasped her hand, bending his head to place a kiss upon it, "Your beauty will forever be burned in my mind's eye, and that is more than I could ask for." Placing his hat on his head, he strode out into the night, which fortunately offered no more than a drizzle.
=====
Blowing out the candle next to her bed, Kagome laid her head upon the pillow. She lay there for a good part of an hour, her mind tyrannized by Mister Kane Tanaka. Behind her closed eyes, she was being taunted by his stirring violet orbs and diviner smile. It would be some time before she forgot that name, or that face, she was sure of it. Curiosity nearly got the better of her, and she'd almost addressed her uncle of his dislike of the man. However, she decided she better not stick her hand into the lion's mouth again that evening.
Inuyasha dismounted his horse, handing the lead of the Azteca to the stable boy. "Shippou, give Vindur extra oats tonight and make sure he's dried thoroughly."
"Why do you insist on going out to ride even when it's pouring outside?" He pulled the horse into a nearby stall. "I swear, sometimes you're such an idiot!" He offered him a grin, before disappearing behind the horse.
"I should whack you one, boy." He shook his head, "And I had to attend a meeting in town. Would you have rather I walked?"
"Could've saved poor Vindu a chill! No one cares if you catch your death of stupidity!" There was an 'oomph' as a horse brush knocked him in the back of the head. "You're a jerk!"
"Next time, I stick a bridle in your mouth and haveyoupull the carriage into town, you little brat!" Inuyasha smirked and left the stable. While most people wouldn't dream of mouthing off to him, there were a select few who had earned the right over the years. Although, Shippou had a funny way of proving his gratitude for Inuyasha taking his abandoned butt in two years ago. You'd think he'd get a little appreciation, butno, the little monster had to take a jab at him at every turn.
The door to the manse opened before he even stepped foot on the stoop, admitting him into Kaede's nagging glare. "And where have you been? It was a mighty storm, and you go gallivanting like it isn't anything! Look at ya! You're plum soaked through!" Grabbing his coat and hat, she shook her head in disgust, "Get outta them wet clothes, and I'll get Sango to run you a bath."
"Always fawning, old lady. I'm a big boy. I can handle a little rain."
"Little? Aye, you're a stubborn dolt. What was so important?"
"I had a meeting I had to attend."
"And you couldn't reschedule?"
"It had been put off for too long anyhow."
With an annoyed huff, she tottered down the hallway, calling for the servant girl.
A half hour later, Inuyasha slipped from his wet clothing and removed his ring from his right hand. Flexing his claws, he scratched his ribs and yawned. Immersing himself into the tub with a content sigh, he released his silver hair from the ponytail and let it fall back into the water. As he let the hot water seep into his chilled pores, he let his mind drift and wondered why he didn't just demand Naraku speak to him about business matters right then. Instead, he introduced himself as Kane Tanaka, his human persona. What had he been thinking? With a cynical chuckle, he thought out loud, "That's precisely it, Iwasn'tthinking." His mind had been caught up in Miss Kagome Higurashi. The image of her dewy eyelashes sitting upon blazing cheeks as her rose lips puckered in an angry pout would lastingly impression his mind. The way her emotions raged in her hazel eyes was electrifying. "Damn it to hell!" He punched the water, splashing it over the sides of the tub. The comely female had more of an effect on him than he wanted to admit. No woman was worth this much afterthought!
Calling for a servant, he ordered a bottle of scotch be brought to his room and got out of the bath. Toweling himself, he opened the adjourning door and exchanged the linen for his robe. A few minutes later, he was not disappointed as his liquor was brought to him with a brandy glass and ice. "Thank you, Kohaku. Would you let Kaede know I'm turning in for the evening?"
"Yes, sir," the boy replied quietly, bowing before hastily taking his leave.
Kohaku and Sango had returned with the rest of the servants two months ago to the property. No matter how much he tried to converse with him, he could get no more than an acknowledgement or nod. Sango had explained that Kohaku kept to himself for the most part, not really understanding how to open up to others or make friends. His reservation really started after the death of their parents when they were younger. While Sango did the best she could for her little brother, she couldn't reach him where he was. Inuyasha could tell the subject bothered her, so he didn't press the matter any further.
After two double shots, he recorked the bottle and let his robe fall to the floor. Crawling into bed, laid there for several hours, suffering against his desires.

=====
