Sesshomaru has been captured by Kuromakaze. & nbsp;Blindly rushing to his rescue will
lead to the slaughter of the inuyokai cl an. As Kakiboufuu tries to figure out&n bsp;a how
to outwit his archenemy; Naomi risks all to save her father.

Chapter 34: T he Firebird
I had no intension& nbsp;of abandoning my brother, however, I kne w reckless action would
only play into&n bsp;Kuromakaze’s hands. I dared&nbs p;not voice my truth to the other for&nb sp;
various reasons. I needed to time&nb sp;to plan my counteraction and I only h ad a slim
hope of coming up with&nb sp;one that would work. I did not wish to raise their hopes
only to c ome back and say it can’t be done. I also didn’t wi sh to hear the words of
doubt other s would have thrown at me for daring&nbs p;to feel as I do. It would not&nb sp;have
been productive. However, I fea r my silence may have had a more si nister purpose.

Naomi cr ouched among the bushes, watching the line&nb sp;of men head for the castle. It
was one of the largest she had ever seen, comparable even to her grandfather&aci rc;€™s
castle. A town had gr own around it, as castles required constant&n bsp;support to
maintain. It was all&nbs p;relatively new construction, only a few dec ades old if that.
Smiths, carpenters&nb sp;were in large numbers in the town but seamstresses and
eateries were plentiful&nbs p;as well. With residential buildings and&nb sp;markets scattered
throughout. It all ;looked so normal that she wondered if t his was really the
stronghold for the&nb sp;Kuro Tenko.
The young dragon&n bsp;was dressed in a dark green kimono w ith dark brown hakama.
Her long si lver tresses were stained black and soot ;had been rubbed into her cheeks
an d neck. It wasn’t to try& nbsp;to pass for human; the outfit was t o keep from being
spotted among the ;foliage.
With the sabotage missions&nb sp;halted for the time being, Kuromakazeâ&eu ro;™s supply
caravans were able to ;make it to their destination. Naomi me rely chose one and
followed them. As she stared at the large castle, she&n bsp;began to understand her
uncleâ€&tra de;s misgivings. Since arriving yesterday sh e had watched numerous soldiers
move in& nbsp;and out of the castle. Weapons and armor were brought in as the smiths&nbs p;
finished their orders. Food and other castle necessities entered frequently as wel l.
Castle Arai was a buzzing hive& nbsp;that only settled down after full darkne ss fell.
As she studied the c astle, she saw the ramparts were active with samurai. Even
after dark the numbers of guards only increased. She f elt the need to take action
with he r father so close but the security of&nb sp;the castle begged her to move slowly. ;
She had defied her uncleâ€&trade ;s orders by coming; she had to make&nbs p;this rescue succeed.
Naomi thought&nb sp;back to her departure. Himawari had chosen to isolate herself,
already mourning&n bsp;Sesshomaru’s loss. Naomi couldn ’t stand to leave her like ;that
and approached her.
â& euro;œDon’t cry, Himawari-chan,â&e uro; said Naomi to the weeping girl. &nb sp;Puffy eyed, Himawari
turned to face t he silver-haired woman. “I don ’t care what, Oji-san says, I&a circ;€™m going
to rescue Chichiue.&acir c;€
“How?†Hi mawari whispered. “You heard w hat he said about the castle. Even ;if we
brought the whole clan, victory&n bsp;still wouldn’t be certain.â&eur o;
“This Kuromakaze is&nb sp;expecting Kakiboufuu and the clan. He&nbs p;won’t expect me,
alone. ;I can sneak into the castle, grab Chich iue and be out before anyone is the ;
wiser,†said Naomi, full of conf idence. Himawari still looked doubtful so&nb sp;the young
sea dragon added, â&e uro;œRemember, I have a lot of power&nb sp;on hand and I can tap into the < br> weather. If anything happens, Iâ€& trade;ll unleash hell on them. Thereâ& euro;™ll be so much
confusion they ;won’t notice us leaving.â€&nb sp;
“So you are arrogantly claiming you have more power than our&n bsp;Taisho,†said Temari
as she e ntered the small clearing where the two women were kneeling. Both turned
to&nbs p;regard her.
“I am a sea dragon,†said Naomi as she& nbsp;rose to face the treacherous woman.
Temari snapped out her fan and pe ered over the edge. “Maybe&nbs p;if you could
transform into the dragon without collapsing afterwards you’d be able to boast.
However, as&nbs p;it is I doubt you would be able t o do much more than get captured. No
matter how much I despise the Ta isho, it doesn’t change my ackn owledgment of his
power.†She&nb sp;paused for a moment, snapping the fan ;shut. “Nor does it cloud ;my
ability to read him. He wants& nbsp;to rescue his brother. He wants to so bad that to do
otherwise is&nbs p;physically making him ill. If he says a rescue will result in our ruin I ’m
willing to accept his j udgment.â€
“You onl y cared about Sesshomaru when he was the Taisho and you wanted the
prestige ;of being his wife,†snarled Naomi.&nb sp; “Now that he’s&nbs p;no longer Taisho, you
don’t&n bsp;care about him at all. He could&nbs p;burn for all you care, so long as ;you are safe.â€
Temari tapp ed her fan on her shoulder as she g lared. “Sesshomaru’s still a catch
even if he no longer& nbsp;holds the position of head. He is& nbsp;still the previous Taisho’s son
and he is still a Reihane. T he near extinct tsuki inu blood is still a prize in of itself.
Even i f the marriage has no political gain, th e bloodline itself is worth it.â€
Temari turned to leave but threw&n bsp;in one last barb. “Of ;course a mongrel, such as
yourself, wou ldn’t understand that.†;Naomi growled and set herself to lunge at the
impertinent bitch. †œMoi. I won’t tell anyon e what you’re planning unless a sked.
It’s no skin off&nb sp;my nose if you get yourself killed di sobeying the Taisho.†She began
to walk away adding over her shoulder,&n bsp;“If you are successful then ;I get more
chances to try and disl odge Himawari from his side.â€

Naomi snarled as she thought about Te mari’s comments. Now as she&nb sp;stared at the
castle she wondered if& nbsp;she was about to get herself killed.&nbs p; If I go back now I’ll&n bsp;have
to face down Oji-san for my&nbs p;disobedience. She thought about that and&n bsp;realized
there may have been a secon d motive behind Temari’s vow of secrecy. I bet she’s
thrilled with the idea of me being pun ished by Oji-san. I may not belong ;to the
inuyokai clan but Oji-san certai nly considers me part of his family. &nb sp;As head, he
won’t tolerate&n bsp;any disobedience. He may well make an example of me.
She thought ;of Himawari’s tears when she t hought her husband-to-be was lost. Her
hopeful expression when Naomi told the g irl she would rescue him without fail. & nbsp;
More than anything, she did not wan t to fail for Himawari’s sake.& nbsp; After all my
boasting and confiden ce, to turn back now would shatter her,& nbsp;Naomi thought.
She sighed and ;looked again at the castle. It†™s only been one whole day since I
arrived, she thought. I need to&n bsp;study the keep closely to determine any&n bsp;weaknesses.
Once I have them, I&aci rc;€™ll strike.

Kakiboufuu sat beneath his waterfall, hands& nbsp;resting on his knees, in meditation as&n bsp;
the water flowed over him. His ;spiritual energy pulsed and radiated away fr om him
as he sent his soul to the other side of reality, the spiritual ;domain of the elementals
and other pure spirits. He needed to speak with Eternal, to beg her help in
retrieving&n bsp;his brother from Kuromakaze. However, to summon her by fire as he had
for Tenseiga would be the highest insult.&nbs p; The sword’s repair required her to be in
the physical world&nbs p;to assess and ultimately to cast the s pell. What he required was
mere co mmunication, so he must go to her.
There was danger in such a move.&n bsp; To travel to the other side he ;needed to release
nearly all of his&nbs p;spiritual energy to create the path across& nbsp;and to be his guide back.
He& nbsp;had found in the past whenever he r eleased his spiritual energy his fire energy& nbsp;
was released as well. It was only passive but everything within a hundred& nbsp;feet of
him would become dry as&nbs p;tinder. So weak and brittle even the& nbsp;mightiest of trees
had become that they would crack and topple over in wind or if someone leaned or
pushed on& nbsp;them. The water arrested the negative ef fects of releasing his spiritual
energy, ;capturing the fire’s energy and&nbs p;preventing it from spreading to the
su rrounding vegetation.
His spirit soared through the ether on pearl white wings& nbsp;as he sought the Azure
Phoenixâ&eu ro;™s realm, Eternal’s home. & nbsp;In the spirit world his appearance was&n bsp;very
different from his physical form.&nb sp; His ears were long like a rabbits,&n bsp;his feet were like
that of a dr agon’s and he had a long t hin tail with a mane of white hair moving
down along the top of the sp ine and flew like a flag from the t ip. He could feel his
fangs were&n bsp;more prominent and eyes that saw more&nbs p;than they did in the physical
world.&n bsp;
Several firebirds appeared around h im and called. He glanced at them. ; “So she
sent you to ;guide me,†said Kakiboufuu to the&nbs p;birds. “I am honored.â&euro ; With those
words the birds flew& nbsp;ahead.
They led him to a ;mountain chain where several of the peaks&nb sp;erupted in fire and
ash. Lightning&n bsp;danced around the active craters as massi ve clouds rose above.
Winds summoned&nb sp;by the eruptions whipped around the sides& nbsp;and swirled to the top.
The f irebirds and Kakiboufuu banked to avoid the&n bsp;worst of the maelstrom, swerving
fro m one side to the other and riding the updrafts to clear cliff faces. The& nbsp;
mountains opened to a small plateau ;and palace that rested upon it.
< br> Flocks of firebirds of various colors and sizes and species flew and nested on&nb sp;the
around the palace. Kakiboufuuâ& euro;™s guides led him to the lower&nbs p;steps and he came to a
landing th ere. Though he could have flown to ;the top, he was given clear
instruction s on how to approach Eternal’s& nbsp;residence. He would have to climb the
stairs first not fly in as if&n bsp;he belonged there.
Folding his ;wings, he ascended the stairs. Climbing&nbs p;was not a problem and he had
to&n bsp;tread carefully with Eternal. She had&nb sp;not minded helping them with Tenseiga
because the risk was largely borne by t hem. This time would be different. &nbs p;He
quieted his emotions knowing they w ould only hinder him now.
As he cleared the last step, a voice called to him. “So you come&nbs p;into my realm now,â€
said Eterna l. She sat on the entrance steps o f her palace across the courtyard from < br> him. The firebirds that had guided him perched around her and one orange bi rd
rested on the back of her hand.& nbsp;
Kakiboufuu strode forward until he was halfway to her then kneeled. “My lady
honors me by allo wing me entrance in her grand estate.â& euro;
“Your manners are&n bsp;impeccable. Akira did well by you,â ;€ she said. Kakiboufuu closed
his eyes at the mention of his dead ma ster. “I assume this is a bout your brother.â€
â&euro ;œIt is,†replied Kakiboufuu without& nbsp;lifting his head. “He was captured by
Kuromakaze. I am cert ain Aniue is being used as bait to lure me into his trap. I
know ;the most logical choice is to accept my loss and refuse to take it, but he is my
brother and I am as res ponsible for him as I am for all my people. I do not wish to
so& nbsp;easily abandon him but I cannot risk&nbs p;the lives of my people just for him.&a circ;€
“You understa nd your position well,†said Eternal.& nbsp; She shifted to face him. â& euro;œSo why
have you come here?â €
“I humbly ask ;for your assistance in rescuing Sesshomaru,â ;€ he replied and waited.
Whatever her decision he would accept, for bette r or for worse.
“So& nbsp;you would risk mine instead of yours?&ac irc;€ Her voice was unreadable but ;
Kakiboufuu knew he needed to answer qui ckly. Anger was implied.
â& euro;œKuromakaze seems unable to handle unex pected situation well. My people would
still be involved but I thought some&nbs p;assistance by you or yours would give us an
edge, add an element of chaos into his well thought out plans.â&euro ;
Eternal’s bell chime&nb sp;laugh filled the courtyard, startling Kakiboufu u into forgetting
himself and looking up . Wild amusement lit her face. &a circ;€œAdd an element of chaos
int o his plans? Inuyasha, you are adorable . A true spirit of fire.†< br>
“Eh?â€
&a circ;€œFire is the element of chaos,&nb sp;wildest element, the most unbound. It&nbs p;follows
nothing, it obeys nothing. It feeds, it grows, it retreats, it hides& nbsp;only to explode once
more. Most&nb sp;forget that, focusing only on the power&nb sp;it represents.†She laughed
a gain before continuing. “Metal ;is your opposite. It is rigid, absolut e order. In the
heat of the f ire it binds together to form an unyield ing power. It is discipline in
cha os. It is predictability.â€

She rose to her feet and raised he r hands to the sky. “I&nb sp;shall assist you, Inuyasha. I
did&nb sp;not grant you Tenken only to have it& nbsp;stolen long before it could fulfill its& nbsp;
purpose. Come my beauties, who wil l journey to the other side with the&nbs p;Hino
Taisho?†Several firebird s cried their compliance, but the orange ;phoenix that had
been perched on Eterna l flew over to Kakiboufuu and landed on& nbsp;his shoulder.
“Oh?â € Eternal gazed with interest at t he phoenix. “What is it y ou desire, Hotaru?â€
The ora nge phoenix had a four foot tail that&nb sp;she spread like a fan. It flashed&nb sp;blue,
white and gold in the light.&nb sp; The rest of her body and head r esembled that of a
falcon save for the crest atop her head that she raised. Blue feathers flashed and
her gol d eyes met Eternal’s blue. &nbs p;“I wish to journey with this& nbsp;one to the very end,â€
replie d the phoenix in a small shrill voice.&n bsp;
The two locked gazes for sever al minutes as the courtyard held its bre ath. Finally,
Eternal relented. â ;€œIf that is your wish, Hotaru.â € She smiled at the phoenix then&n bsp;
turned her attention to the other fi rebirds. “If you are ready&nbs p;prepare yourself for
the journey. Hot aru will call you when it is time t o strike.â€
As the birds&nbs p;chattered their excitement, Kakiboufuu spoke to& nbsp;Eternal, “If you had
refus ed I would have accepted it and mourned& nbsp;Aniue. Thank you so much for this. â€
“Do not tha nk me yet, Inuyasha,†she said wi th gravity. “You still have&nb sp;a battle to
fight and you need t o do it soon. Your foolish niece h as put herself in mortal peril.â€
“What?! That stupid ;girl! I ordered her not to do any thing,†snapped Kakiboufuu
as he rose to his feet.
“I ndeed. Sagara may see a benefit in ;keeping Sesshomaru alive; however, I donâ&e uro;™t
believe the same can be sai d of Naomi,†said Eternal. She&n bsp;turned away, signaling
that the meeting&n bsp;was over and Kakiboufuu needed to be ;on his way. The hanyou
bowed and& nbsp;turned to leave. “That se a dragon is near the waterfall at the&nb sp;moment. I
wonder how long sheâ €™ll remain there.â€
< br> Kakiboufuu didn’t stop or look&n bsp;back. Her final comment didnâ€&tra de;t require a response,
just the opposi te. She hadn’t said it to him but to her charges. He just&n bsp;happened to
overhear her. To acknow ledge it would be to acknowledge his eav esdropping, a very
rude activity to be&n bsp;indulging in.
She doesnâ€&tra de;t mean Naomi, since she’s of f getting herself killed by Kuromakaze, he&nb sp;
thought grimly as he strode down the& nbsp;stairs. She must mean Kaiyoshinju. &nbs p;He
sighed as he thought about facing&n bsp;the sea dragon hanyou but, with time ;running
out for Naomi, avoiding her wou ld be impossible.

Naomi moved silently through the halls of&n bsp;Castle Arai. It was well after dark and
the town had gone to sleep.&nb sp; The interior of the castle wasnâ&eu ro;™t inactive but it was a
far&nb sp;cry from the daytime. Using her wate r magic’s reflective attribute, she& nbsp;avoided
the eyes of the guards on&n bsp;duty. She had every intention that afternoon of waiting
and watching until she saw the opening she needed but, as&n bsp;evening fell, she had
heard a cry&nb sp;on the wind followed by the scent of& nbsp;her father’s blood. Knowing&nb sp;her
father was being tortured somewhere&nb sp;within, Naomi could wait no longer.
She paused to take in the sce nts of the castle and followed the whiff of blood and
fear floating in the& nbsp;air. She followed it down stairwells&nb sp;and through doorways into
the deeper part of the main keep. She strained&nbs p;her ears for guard activity before
she opened the doors to enter. No fur ther noise of torture came from within s o she
guessed they were through for ;the night. It would be easier to rescue her father if
no one was att ending him when she arrived.
Final ly the stairs came to an end at the head of a long corridor of stone. Torches
lined the passageway. There&nb sp;were steel doors along the wall, cells&nbs p;for prisoners.
She sniffed at ea ch one and listened but none she passed& nbsp;held life. There was no
fresh ;air in the deep dungeon, no windows led to the outside. When she left wit h
her father, they would have to go the way she had come. She grimace d as she
realized the stairwell was ;the only exit and the entire castle and its guards were
between her and fr eedom.
No turning back now, she&nb sp;thought, pressing forward. Chichiue is ju st ahead. Hold
on, Chichiue!

She traversed the long hallway until sh e came to a single door at the very end. She
listened for movement on the other side and only heard one person laboring to
breathe. Her nose&nb sp;told her who it was. With a mix of excitement and trepidation,
she push ed the door open.
She froze a t the sight that met her. Against the far wall was her father. Shackles&n bsp;
captured his wrists and the chains p ulled them up and back, holding him up.& nbsp; A
second set was clamped around&nb sp;his neck. He stood on his feet, ;but his knees and
waist were bent. ; Cuff held his ankles and chains tied&n bsp;them to the floor. Blood
trickled&n bsp;down his face and arms and stained h is once white hakama. He looked as ;
if he wanted to kneel but the shac kles around his wrists held him too high up.
Naomi recovered herself and&n bsp;rushed forward. “Chichiue! &nbs p;Chichiue!†she whispered
and placed& nbsp;her hands on his face. â€&oe lig;Chichiue, I’m here! Iâ&eu ro;™m going to get you out.â€&nbs p;
Sesshomaru at first didnâ€&trad e;t respond but when her hands touched h is face, he
flinched. She leaned f orward and began licking the blood off h is face. Sesshomaru
growled a warning&n bsp;but didn’t move.
Naom i paused and took in his battered form&n bsp;again. “Chichiue! Itâ&eu ro;™s me, Naomi!†she
whispered. “I’m going to&n bsp;get you out.†Sesshomaru didn&aci rc;€™t stop growling or
acknowledg e her words. She stared then noticed&nb sp;the blood trickling out of both
ears. She reexamined his face. Blood w as coming from beneath both closed lids and
his nose was broken.
Blin d, deaf and unable to smell, her father& nbsp;had no way of knowing who was
standing in front of him. With blood&nb sp;coming from his mouth as well, she fe ared his
tongue had been taken. Sh e felt her rage rise but she contained&n bsp;it. Her father
didn’t ;need her going on a rampage. He n eeded her to save him.
She kissed his forehead and whispered, &acir c;€œDon’t worry, Chichiue. &nb sp;You’ll be home soon
enough.& acirc;€ She reached for a shackle to unlatch it.
“If y ou free his arms you will only hurt ;him more,†said an oily voice be hind her.
She spun around.
< br> A hanyou that looked a great deal li ke her uncle save for his short cut ;hair and dark
clothes. His hair w as only shoulder length and was held bac k by a sky blue
headband. He wore a matching kimono underneath a black&nbs p;sleeveless haori and
armor. His gold& nbsp;eyes glittered in amusement as he regard ed her.
Kuromakaze, she thought in horror. Even now, with him standing&nb sp;before her, she
couldn’t sme ll him. Another hanyou, a female with&n bsp;long black hair and red eyes
dressed as a hitenko stood to his side. &n bsp;She too was masked from Naomiâ€&tra de;s nose.
Naomi growled as she dr opped into her fighting crouch.
Ku romakaze tsked her and said, “Y ou should really pay closer attention to ;your
environment, Naomi. Or at the&nbs p;least, take time to really look at you r father and see
how he’s& nbsp;been restrained.â€
Naomi&nbs p;eyed him but didn’t move. &nb sp;He smirked and said, “Donâ& euro;™t worry, we won’t
a ttack. You are standing next to our&nbs p;precious bait after all. I donâ&euro ;™t want him to be
killed.â€
Naomi growled but she took a step back and while keeping the duo&nbs p;in her periphery,
she glanced at her&n bsp;father. What she hadn’t se en from the front she saw clearly from&n bsp;
the side. Metal bars were stuck&nbs p;into his back along his spine. It&nbs p;explained why he
was leaning forward w hen the chains on his wrist and neck&nbs p;pulled him back.
“Kisam a!†she shrieked.
â€& oelig;Now what kind of language is that for a lady?†he asked in a c hiding tone.
Naomi stepped forward ;and unleashed a lightning spell on the sinister hanyou. He
grinned and the&nbs p;female hanyou lunged forward and caught the spell then tossed it
aside. Kurom akaze just kept smiling.

Chapter 35:&nb sp;The Gathering Storm
Kakiboufuu ha s the backup he needs to make rescue&nbs p;possible but time is not on his
s ide. Naomi rush to save her father ;has caused her to fall for Kuromakazeâ €™s trap. If
Kakiboufuu wishes&nb sp;to save both his niece and brother, h e’ll have to team up with
the very person he exiled.

Author Notes:
Bwah ahahahah! I have come with an excellent solution to reconcile Ginhana and
Sessh omaru’s mother from the manga/anime. I am so happy! That chapter ;will
appear after “Sympathy fo r the Devil†where I explain the& nbsp;pair and their
relationship. It fe lt so good to finally figure it out ;and all while I was watching
Sesshy&aci rc;€™s mom on final act.
Sorry for the delay. I really wanted& nbsp;to wait until I finished up the &ac irc;€œHi no Taishoâ€
sequence&nbs p;of the story before posting further chapter s. I write quite a bit and needed& nbsp;
to do some editing. Fortunately, I finally sat down and started to do ;that. I was
burning out again but the sequence is all but done and I can now beginning focusing
on the Poisoned Sakura sequence that follows. The&n bsp;End of Days sequence is after it
and it is the last sequence in this&nb sp;story. Finally! Here’s to& nbsp;finishing the story in the
new year !

Chapter 34: T he Firebird
I had no intension& nbsp;of abandoning my brother, however, I kne w reckless action would
only play into&n bsp;Kuromakaze’s hands. I dared&nbs p;not voice my truth to the other for&nb sp;
various reasons. I needed to time&nb sp;to plan my counteraction and I only h ad a slim
hope of coming up with&nb sp;one that would work. I did not wish to raise their hopes
only to c ome back and say it can’t be done. I also didn’t wi sh to hear the words of
doubt other s would have thrown at me for daring&nbs p;to feel as I do. It would not&nb sp;have
been productive. However, I fea r my silence may have had a more si nister purpose.

Naomi cr ouched among the bushes, watching the line&nb sp;of men head for the castle. It
was one of the largest she had ever seen, comparable even to her grandfather&aci rc;€™s
castle. A town had gr own around it, as castles required constant&n bsp;support to
maintain. It was all&nbs p;relatively new construction, only a few dec ades old if that.
Smiths, carpenters&nb sp;were in large numbers in the town but seamstresses and
eateries were plentiful&nbs p;as well. With residential buildings and&nb sp;markets scattered
throughout. It all ;looked so normal that she wondered if t his was really the
stronghold for the&nb sp;Kuro Tenko.
The young dragon&n bsp;was dressed in a dark green kimono w ith dark brown hakama.
Her long si lver tresses were stained black and soot ;had been rubbed into her cheeks
an d neck. It wasn’t to try& nbsp;to pass for human; the outfit was t o keep from being
spotted among the ;foliage.
With the sabotage missions&nb sp;halted for the time being, Kuromakazeâ&eu ro;™s supply
caravans were able to ;make it to their destination. Naomi me rely chose one and
followed them. As she stared at the large castle, she&n bsp;began to understand her
uncleâ€&tra de;s misgivings. Since arriving yesterday sh e had watched numerous soldiers
move in& nbsp;and out of the castle. Weapons and armor were brought in as the smiths&nbs p;
finished their orders. Food and other castle necessities entered frequently as wel l.
Castle Arai was a buzzing hive& nbsp;that only settled down after full darkne ss fell.
As she studied the c astle, she saw the ramparts were active with samurai. Even
after dark the numbers of guards only increased. She f elt the need to take action
with he r father so close but the security of&nb sp;the castle begged her to move slowly. ;
She had defied her uncleâ€&trade ;s orders by coming; she had to make&nbs p;this rescue succeed.
Naomi thought&nb sp;back to her departure. Himawari had chosen to isolate herself,
already mourning&n bsp;Sesshomaru’s loss. Naomi couldn ’t stand to leave her like ;that
and approached her.
â& euro;œDon’t cry, Himawari-chan,â&e uro; said Naomi to the weeping girl. &nb sp;Puffy eyed, Himawari
turned to face t he silver-haired woman. “I don ’t care what, Oji-san says, I&a circ;€™m going
to rescue Chichiue.&acir c;€
“How?†Hi mawari whispered. “You heard w hat he said about the castle. Even ;if we
brought the whole clan, victory&n bsp;still wouldn’t be certain.â&eur o;
“This Kuromakaze is&nb sp;expecting Kakiboufuu and the clan. He&nbs p;won’t expect me,
alone. ;I can sneak into the castle, grab Chich iue and be out before anyone is the ;
wiser,†said Naomi, full of conf idence. Himawari still looked doubtful so&nb sp;the young
sea dragon added, â&e uro;œRemember, I have a lot of power&nb sp;on hand and I can tap into the < br> weather. If anything happens, Iâ€& trade;ll unleash hell on them. Thereâ& euro;™ll be so much
confusion they ;won’t notice us leaving.â€&nb sp;
“So you are arrogantly claiming you have more power than our&n bsp;Taisho,†said Temari
as she e ntered the small clearing where the two women were kneeling. Both turned
to&nbs p;regard her.
“I am a sea dragon,†said Naomi as she& nbsp;rose to face the treacherous woman.
Temari snapped out her fan and pe ered over the edge. “Maybe&nbs p;if you could
transform into the dragon without collapsing afterwards you’d be able to boast.
However, as&nbs p;it is I doubt you would be able t o do much more than get captured. No
matter how much I despise the Ta isho, it doesn’t change my ackn owledgment of his
power.†She&nb sp;paused for a moment, snapping the fan ;shut. “Nor does it cloud ;my
ability to read him. He wants& nbsp;to rescue his brother. He wants to so bad that to do
otherwise is&nbs p;physically making him ill. If he says a rescue will result in our ruin I ’m
willing to accept his j udgment.â€
“You onl y cared about Sesshomaru when he was the Taisho and you wanted the
prestige ;of being his wife,†snarled Naomi.&nb sp; “Now that he’s&nbs p;no longer Taisho, you
don’t&n bsp;care about him at all. He could&nbs p;burn for all you care, so long as ;you are safe.â€
Temari tapp ed her fan on her shoulder as she g lared. “Sesshomaru’s still a catch
even if he no longer& nbsp;holds the position of head. He is& nbsp;still the previous Taisho’s son
and he is still a Reihane. T he near extinct tsuki inu blood is still a prize in of itself.
Even i f the marriage has no political gain, th e bloodline itself is worth it.â€
Temari turned to leave but threw&n bsp;in one last barb. “Of ;course a mongrel, such as
yourself, wou ldn’t understand that.†;Naomi growled and set herself to lunge at the
impertinent bitch. †œMoi. I won’t tell anyon e what you’re planning unless a sked.
It’s no skin off&nb sp;my nose if you get yourself killed di sobeying the Taisho.†She began
to walk away adding over her shoulder,&n bsp;“If you are successful then ;I get more
chances to try and disl odge Himawari from his side.â€

Naomi snarled as she thought about Te mari’s comments. Now as she&nb sp;stared at the
castle she wondered if& nbsp;she was about to get herself killed.&nbs p; If I go back now I’ll&n bsp;have
to face down Oji-san for my&nbs p;disobedience. She thought about that and&n bsp;realized
there may have been a secon d motive behind Temari’s vow of secrecy. I bet she’s
thrilled with the idea of me being pun ished by Oji-san. I may not belong ;to the
inuyokai clan but Oji-san certai nly considers me part of his family. &nb sp;As head, he
won’t tolerate&n bsp;any disobedience. He may well make an example of me.
She thought ;of Himawari’s tears when she t hought her husband-to-be was lost. Her
hopeful expression when Naomi told the g irl she would rescue him without fail. & nbsp;
More than anything, she did not wan t to fail for Himawari’s sake.& nbsp; After all my
boasting and confiden ce, to turn back now would shatter her,& nbsp;Naomi thought.
She sighed and ;looked again at the castle. It†™s only been one whole day since I
arrived, she thought. I need to&n bsp;study the keep closely to determine any&n bsp;weaknesses.
Once I have them, I&aci rc;€™ll strike.

Kakiboufuu sat beneath his waterfall, hands& nbsp;resting on his knees, in meditation as&n bsp;
the water flowed over him. His ;spiritual energy pulsed and radiated away fr om him
as he sent his soul to the other side of reality, the spiritual ;domain of the elementals
and other pure spirits. He needed to speak with Eternal, to beg her help in
retrieving&n bsp;his brother from Kuromakaze. However, to summon her by fire as he had
for Tenseiga would be the highest insult.&nbs p; The sword’s repair required her to be in
the physical world&nbs p;to assess and ultimately to cast the s pell. What he required was
mere co mmunication, so he must go to her.
There was danger in such a move.&n bsp; To travel to the other side he ;needed to release
nearly all of his&nbs p;spiritual energy to create the path across& nbsp;and to be his guide back.
He& nbsp;had found in the past whenever he r eleased his spiritual energy his fire energy& nbsp;
was released as well. It was only passive but everything within a hundred& nbsp;feet of
him would become dry as&nbs p;tinder. So weak and brittle even the& nbsp;mightiest of trees
had become that they would crack and topple over in wind or if someone leaned or
pushed on& nbsp;them. The water arrested the negative ef fects of releasing his spiritual
energy, ;capturing the fire’s energy and&nbs p;preventing it from spreading to the
su rrounding vegetation.
His spirit soared through the ether on pearl white wings& nbsp;as he sought the Azure
Phoenixâ&eu ro;™s realm, Eternal’s home. & nbsp;In the spirit world his appearance was&n bsp;very
different from his physical form.&nb sp; His ears were long like a rabbits,&n bsp;his feet were like
that of a dr agon’s and he had a long t hin tail with a mane of white hair moving
down along the top of the sp ine and flew like a flag from the t ip. He could feel his
fangs were&n bsp;more prominent and eyes that saw more&nbs p;than they did in the physical
world.&n bsp;
Several firebirds appeared around h im and called. He glanced at them. ; “So she
sent you to ;guide me,†said Kakiboufuu to the&nbs p;birds. “I am honored.â&euro ; With those
words the birds flew& nbsp;ahead.
They led him to a ;mountain chain where several of the peaks&nb sp;erupted in fire and
ash. Lightning&n bsp;danced around the active craters as massi ve clouds rose above.
Winds summoned&nb sp;by the eruptions whipped around the sides& nbsp;and swirled to the top.
The f irebirds and Kakiboufuu banked to avoid the&n bsp;worst of the maelstrom, swerving
fro m one side to the other and riding the updrafts to clear cliff faces. The& nbsp;
mountains opened to a small plateau ;and palace that rested upon it.
< br> Flocks of firebirds of various colors and sizes and species flew and nested on&nb sp;the
around the palace. Kakiboufuuâ& euro;™s guides led him to the lower&nbs p;steps and he came to a
landing th ere. Though he could have flown to ;the top, he was given clear
instruction s on how to approach Eternal’s& nbsp;residence. He would have to climb the
stairs first not fly in as if&n bsp;he belonged there.
Folding his ;wings, he ascended the stairs. Climbing&nbs p;was not a problem and he had
to&n bsp;tread carefully with Eternal. She had&nb sp;not minded helping them with Tenseiga
because the risk was largely borne by t hem. This time would be different. &nbs p;He
quieted his emotions knowing they w ould only hinder him now.
As he cleared the last step, a voice called to him. “So you come&nbs p;into my realm now,â€
said Eterna l. She sat on the entrance steps o f her palace across the courtyard from < br> him. The firebirds that had guided him perched around her and one orange bi rd
rested on the back of her hand.& nbsp;
Kakiboufuu strode forward until he was halfway to her then kneeled. “My lady
honors me by allo wing me entrance in her grand estate.â& euro;
“Your manners are&n bsp;impeccable. Akira did well by you,â ;€ she said. Kakiboufuu closed
his eyes at the mention of his dead ma ster. “I assume this is a bout your brother.â€
â&euro ;œIt is,†replied Kakiboufuu without& nbsp;lifting his head. “He was captured by
Kuromakaze. I am cert ain Aniue is being used as bait to lure me into his trap. I
know ;the most logical choice is to accept my loss and refuse to take it, but he is my
brother and I am as res ponsible for him as I am for all my people. I do not wish to
so& nbsp;easily abandon him but I cannot risk&nbs p;the lives of my people just for him.&a circ;€
“You understa nd your position well,†said Eternal.& nbsp; She shifted to face him. â& euro;œSo why
have you come here?â €
“I humbly ask ;for your assistance in rescuing Sesshomaru,â ;€ he replied and waited.
Whatever her decision he would accept, for bette r or for worse.
“So& nbsp;you would risk mine instead of yours?&ac irc;€ Her voice was unreadable but ;
Kakiboufuu knew he needed to answer qui ckly. Anger was implied.
â& euro;œKuromakaze seems unable to handle unex pected situation well. My people would
still be involved but I thought some&nbs p;assistance by you or yours would give us an
edge, add an element of chaos into his well thought out plans.â&euro ;
Eternal’s bell chime&nb sp;laugh filled the courtyard, startling Kakiboufu u into forgetting
himself and looking up . Wild amusement lit her face. &a circ;€œAdd an element of chaos
int o his plans? Inuyasha, you are adorable . A true spirit of fire.†< br>
“Eh?â€
&a circ;€œFire is the element of chaos,&nb sp;wildest element, the most unbound. It&nbs p;follows
nothing, it obeys nothing. It feeds, it grows, it retreats, it hides& nbsp;only to explode once
more. Most&nb sp;forget that, focusing only on the power&nb sp;it represents.†She laughed
a gain before continuing. “Metal ;is your opposite. It is rigid, absolut e order. In the
heat of the f ire it binds together to form an unyield ing power. It is discipline in
cha os. It is predictability.â€

She rose to her feet and raised he r hands to the sky. “I&nb sp;shall assist you, Inuyasha. I
did&nb sp;not grant you Tenken only to have it& nbsp;stolen long before it could fulfill its& nbsp;
purpose. Come my beauties, who wil l journey to the other side with the&nbs p;Hino
Taisho?†Several firebird s cried their compliance, but the orange ;phoenix that had
been perched on Eterna l flew over to Kakiboufuu and landed on& nbsp;his shoulder.
“Oh?â € Eternal gazed with interest at t he phoenix. “What is it y ou desire, Hotaru?â€
The ora nge phoenix had a four foot tail that&nb sp;she spread like a fan. It flashed&nb sp;blue,
white and gold in the light.&nb sp; The rest of her body and head r esembled that of a
falcon save for the crest atop her head that she raised. Blue feathers flashed and
her gol d eyes met Eternal’s blue. &nbs p;“I wish to journey with this& nbsp;one to the very end,â€
replie d the phoenix in a small shrill voice.&n bsp;
The two locked gazes for sever al minutes as the courtyard held its bre ath. Finally,
Eternal relented. â ;€œIf that is your wish, Hotaru.â € She smiled at the phoenix then&n bsp;
turned her attention to the other fi rebirds. “If you are ready&nbs p;prepare yourself for
the journey. Hot aru will call you when it is time t o strike.â€
As the birds&nbs p;chattered their excitement, Kakiboufuu spoke to& nbsp;Eternal, “If you had
refus ed I would have accepted it and mourned& nbsp;Aniue. Thank you so much for this. â€
“Do not tha nk me yet, Inuyasha,†she said wi th gravity. “You still have&nb sp;a battle to
fight and you need t o do it soon. Your foolish niece h as put herself in mortal peril.â€
“What?! That stupid ;girl! I ordered her not to do any thing,†snapped Kakiboufuu
as he rose to his feet.
“I ndeed. Sagara may see a benefit in ;keeping Sesshomaru alive; however, I donâ&e uro;™t
believe the same can be sai d of Naomi,†said Eternal. She&n bsp;turned away, signaling
that the meeting&n bsp;was over and Kakiboufuu needed to be ;on his way. The hanyou
bowed and& nbsp;turned to leave. “That se a dragon is near the waterfall at the&nb sp;moment. I
wonder how long sheâ €™ll remain there.â€
< br> Kakiboufuu didn’t stop or look&n bsp;back. Her final comment didnâ€&tra de;t require a response,
just the opposi te. She hadn’t said it to him but to her charges. He just&n bsp;happened to
overhear her. To acknow ledge it would be to acknowledge his eav esdropping, a very
rude activity to be&n bsp;indulging in.
She doesnâ€&tra de;t mean Naomi, since she’s of f getting herself killed by Kuromakaze, he&nb sp;
thought grimly as he strode down the& nbsp;stairs. She must mean Kaiyoshinju. &nbs p;He
sighed as he thought about facing&n bsp;the sea dragon hanyou but, with time ;running
out for Naomi, avoiding her wou ld be impossible.

Naomi moved silently through the halls of&n bsp;Castle Arai. It was well after dark and
the town had gone to sleep.&nb sp; The interior of the castle wasnâ&eu ro;™t inactive but it was a
far&nb sp;cry from the daytime. Using her wate r magic’s reflective attribute, she& nbsp;avoided
the eyes of the guards on&n bsp;duty. She had every intention that afternoon of waiting
and watching until she saw the opening she needed but, as&n bsp;evening fell, she had
heard a cry&nb sp;on the wind followed by the scent of& nbsp;her father’s blood. Knowing&nb sp;her
father was being tortured somewhere&nb sp;within, Naomi could wait no longer.
She paused to take in the sce nts of the castle and followed the whiff of blood and
fear floating in the& nbsp;air. She followed it down stairwells&nb sp;and through doorways into
the deeper part of the main keep. She strained&nbs p;her ears for guard activity before
she opened the doors to enter. No fur ther noise of torture came from within s o she
guessed they were through for ;the night. It would be easier to rescue her father if
no one was att ending him when she arrived.
Final ly the stairs came to an end at the head of a long corridor of stone. Torches
lined the passageway. There&nb sp;were steel doors along the wall, cells&nbs p;for prisoners.
She sniffed at ea ch one and listened but none she passed& nbsp;held life. There was no
fresh ;air in the deep dungeon, no windows led to the outside. When she left wit h
her father, they would have to go the way she had come. She grimace d as she
realized the stairwell was ;the only exit and the entire castle and its guards were
between her and fr eedom.
No turning back now, she&nb sp;thought, pressing forward. Chichiue is ju st ahead. Hold
on, Chichiue!

She traversed the long hallway until sh e came to a single door at the very end. She
listened for movement on the other side and only heard one person laboring to
breathe. Her nose&nb sp;told her who it was. With a mix of excitement and trepidation,
she push ed the door open.
She froze a t the sight that met her. Against the far wall was her father. Shackles&n bsp;
captured his wrists and the chains p ulled them up and back, holding him up.& nbsp; A
second set was clamped around&nb sp;his neck. He stood on his feet, ;but his knees and
waist were bent. ; Cuff held his ankles and chains tied&n bsp;them to the floor. Blood
trickled&n bsp;down his face and arms and stained h is once white hakama. He looked as ;
if he wanted to kneel but the shac kles around his wrists held him too high up.
Naomi recovered herself and&n bsp;rushed forward. “Chichiue! &nbs p;Chichiue!†she whispered
and placed& nbsp;her hands on his face. â€&oe lig;Chichiue, I’m here! Iâ&eu ro;™m going to get you out.â€&nbs p;
Sesshomaru at first didnâ€&trad e;t respond but when her hands touched h is face, he
flinched. She leaned f orward and began licking the blood off h is face. Sesshomaru
growled a warning&n bsp;but didn’t move.
Naom i paused and took in his battered form&n bsp;again. “Chichiue! Itâ&eu ro;™s me, Naomi!†she
whispered. “I’m going to&n bsp;get you out.†Sesshomaru didn&aci rc;€™t stop growling or
acknowledg e her words. She stared then noticed&nb sp;the blood trickling out of both
ears. She reexamined his face. Blood w as coming from beneath both closed lids and
his nose was broken.
Blin d, deaf and unable to smell, her father& nbsp;had no way of knowing who was
standing in front of him. With blood&nb sp;coming from his mouth as well, she fe ared his
tongue had been taken. Sh e felt her rage rise but she contained&n bsp;it. Her father
didn’t ;need her going on a rampage. He n eeded her to save him.
She kissed his forehead and whispered, &acir c;€œDon’t worry, Chichiue. &nb sp;You’ll be home soon
enough.& acirc;€ She reached for a shackle to unlatch it.
“If y ou free his arms you will only hurt ;him more,†said an oily voice be hind her.
She spun around.
< br> A hanyou that looked a great deal li ke her uncle save for his short cut ;hair and dark
clothes. His hair w as only shoulder length and was held bac k by a sky blue
headband. He wore a matching kimono underneath a black&nbs p;sleeveless haori and
armor. His gold& nbsp;eyes glittered in amusement as he regard ed her.
Kuromakaze, she thought in horror. Even now, with him standing&nb sp;before her, she
couldn’t sme ll him. Another hanyou, a female with&n bsp;long black hair and red eyes
dressed as a hitenko stood to his side. &n bsp;She too was masked from Naomiâ€&tra de;s nose.
Naomi growled as she dr opped into her fighting crouch.
Ku romakaze tsked her and said, “Y ou should really pay closer attention to ;your
environment, Naomi. Or at the&nbs p;least, take time to really look at you r father and see
how he’s& nbsp;been restrained.â€
Naomi&nbs p;eyed him but didn’t move. &nb sp;He smirked and said, “Donâ& euro;™t worry, we won’t
a ttack. You are standing next to our&nbs p;precious bait after all. I donâ&euro ;™t want him to be
killed.â€
Naomi growled but she took a step back and while keeping the duo&nbs p;in her periphery,
she glanced at her&n bsp;father. What she hadn’t se en from the front she saw clearly from&n bsp;
the side. Metal bars were stuck&nbs p;into his back along his spine. It&nbs p;explained why he
was leaning forward w hen the chains on his wrist and neck&nbs p;pulled him back.
“Kisam a!†she shrieked.
â€& oelig;Now what kind of language is that for a lady?†he asked in a c hiding tone.
Naomi stepped forward ;and unleashed a lightning spell on the sinister hanyou. He
grinned and the&nbs p;female hanyou lunged forward and caught the spell then tossed it
aside. Kurom akaze just kept smiling.

Chapter 35:&nb sp;The Gathering Storm
Kakiboufuu ha s the backup he needs to make rescue&nbs p;possible but time is not on his
s ide. Naomi rush to save her father ;has caused her to fall for Kuromakazeâ €™s trap. If
Kakiboufuu wishes&nb sp;to save both his niece and brother, h e’ll have to team up with
the very person he exiled.

Bwah ahahahah! I have come with an excellent solution to reconcile Ginhana and
Sessh omaru’s mother from the manga/anime. I am so happy! That chapter ;will
appear after “Sympathy fo r the Devil†where I explain the& nbsp;pair and their
relationship. It fe lt so good to finally figure it out ;and all while I was watching
Sesshy&aci rc;€™s mom on final act.
Sorry for the delay. I really wanted& nbsp;to wait until I finished up the &ac irc;€œHi no Taishoâ€
sequence&nbs p;of the story before posting further chapter s. I write quite a bit and needed& nbsp;
to do some editing. Fortunately, I finally sat down and started to do ;that. I was
burning out again but the sequence is all but done and I can now beginning focusing
