Nobody said it was easy.
It's such a shame we had to part.
How the words rang true in that moment at that exact time.
Funny, I would always hear this voice whisper in my ear.
“You can do it, you can make it because you are stronger than the strongest.”
I never knew what it meant until I was sixteen years old.
That exact moment in time was when Life laughed at me and said how can I make her break?
Through out the years it threw things at me and I dodged them with the grace of a panther.
I always had my friends to lean on, but it was always me who became their rock.
My group of friends all had at least lost someone dear and near to them.
Sango lost her little brother.
Inuyasha lost his mother and father.
Miroku lost his only care giver, his uncle.
Shippou lost both his parents and lived with fosters.
I lost my parents and my little brother.
Little did I know, that Life was also about to take away the one person I had left.
“Grandpa, I'm home!” I yelled as dropped my heavy yellow back pack onto the floor near the door.
“In here Kagome!” yelled my Grandfather which was also accompanied by a hacking cough.
“Grandfather, are you okay?” I asked walking into the den.
It hadn't changed in the ten years they've been gone.
It still had the golden leather couches, somewhat worn down by the years.
The deep brown wooden walls covered in family pictures that were covered in dust.
The T.V still sat in the same corner, and near the fireplace was a recliner and in the recliner was my Grandfather.
He looked older than he had before.
Deep lines etched into his face and his dark brown eyes filled with a deep sadness.
“I'm fine, just a cold that's all,” He said smiling sadly.
He never gave me a real smile anymore.
He was not the same man he had been when I was a child.
I remember he used to tell crazy stories about demons and the Shikon No Tama.
My father gave me the family jewel when I was I think five.
I remember its smooth surface and its Sakura blossom pink color.
I've never taken it off in all this time.
It has been my way to remember them, to remember their souls.
It was the Shikon No Tama as my Grandfather had put it.
“Want me to make you some tea?” I asked trying to perk up the mood.
He looked me over and I knew what he was thinking.
He wanted to know when I suddenly became a woman.
I stood at a tall 5'7, that's pretty tall for a Japanese girl.
My hair fell down just past my shoulders in an obsidian black color.
You know, the color that shone sort of silver in the light.
It wasn't straight like the traditional Japanese girls.
It was wavy just like my dad's.
I had my mother's eye shape, almond.
I had my dad's Angel kissed lips in a pretty shade of cherry red.
My bangs were side swept in the American Emo fashion.
My chest of course had developed but not by much.
My school uniform he would consider a little sluttish, I thought it was too.
The green sailor skirt stopped mid thigh and I wore knee high white stockings.
I wore brown loafers on my feet.
My shirt was a pristine white with mother of pearl snap buttons on the front with a sailor collar in green.
I also had a little red tie too.
“No, thank you though Kagome,” he said as he turned back to stare at the fire.
I knew I was dismissed so I went upstairs to my room.
I called Sango and made plans with her to go to the mall.
I changed out of my uniform and into grey gauchos and a yellow basketball tee-shirt.
I put on a pair of flip flops and made my way down the stairs.
“I'm going to the mall to hang out with Sango and Miroku. I'll be back in time to make dinner!” I yelled into the den for my Grandfather to hear.
He nodded okay and I went out the door.
I stopped at the top of the shrine steps and looked at Goshinbouku.
I smiled and waved at the old tree.
I walked down the many grey stone steps and onto the sidewalk.
My neighborhood was peaceful, nothing ever happened.
A few cars passed by me as I walked the few blocks to the city bus stop.
As I waited I saw a boy walking towards the bus stop.
He looked familiar; in fact he looked a lot like Inuyasha.
As he got closer though, I could tell he was not my brash and obnoxious friend.
He was older and looked more sophisticated.
His hair was longer than Inuyasha's but still the silvery moonlight white color.
As he got closer I could see that his eyes were not the same Honey shade of amber that Inuyasha's were.
His eyes were molten gold; he had a cold look to him that made me shiver.
He stopped right next to me and looked down.
I smiled but he did not return it.
I looked away but I could still feel his hard gaze.
Looking down the street I could see the steel grey color of the bus approaching.
I hummed a lullaby that my mother used to sing to me when I was little.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see him still staring but this time his eyes had softened just a smidge.
I grinned as the bus approached and climbed on depositing my sixty cents into the coin machine.
I could hear the jingling of his change as it fell through the tiny slot.
He followed me to the back of the bus where there were four seats lined up.
I sat next to a window and stared out as the bus began shakily moving.
I was always afraid that it would tip over.
I never trusted this mode of transport, but I had no choice I was not wealthy enough to afford a car.
The seat next to me made a sound as the boy sat next to me.
I turned my head and stared up at him.
He must have been extremely tall, taller than my dad had been.
“What are you staring at?” he asked with arrogance laced into his tone.
“Obviously nothing,” I said smiling a bright smile at him.
One thing you should all know is that my smile has never reached my eyes, not since they had died.
He studied my critically, his eyes squinting as if he was trying to unlock the secret of my eyes.
“My name is Sesshoumaru,” he said finally giving up on trying to figure me out.
“I'm Kagome, you must be related to Inuyasha,” I said as I looked at him up and down, noticing that only his color resembled Inuyasha.
“He is my half brother,” he said with disdain.
“You do not like him do you?” I asked carefully, I hated prying but I was curious by nature.
“No, I do not,” he said looking away from me.
I sighed and just nodded my head.
I turned my head to look back out at the passing of the scenery.
Cars, lamp posts, trees, and a lot of people were out that day.
The bus had reached the destination after many stops.
I got off the bus and stared up at the big building looming in front of me.
I walked up the pathway that was lined with grass and trees.
I stopped by the brick seats near a fountain and waited for Sango to come find me.
I spotted her at the entrance with Miroku and Inuyasha.
I waved as big as I could, then ran up to them.
I smiled when I noticed Inuyasha had brought Kikyou.
They had been going out for a year.
They met Freshman year, she was a cheerleader for a rival school.
He was on the football team and at one game he had ran into her trying to catch the ball.
It was like at first sight.
She was a little shorter than me, maybe by two inches.
She had long brown hair, it fell around her waist.
Her eyes were an intense dark brown, she made you feel like she knew everything about you.
Her skin was snow white, whiter than mine even.
She looked so delicate, as if one hug could break her to pieces.
She was a year older than all of us.
She had a younger sister named Kaede, she was our age.
Sango hugged me and Miroku, in true Miroku fashion, groped my ass as he gave me a hug.
I gently removed his hand and put it by his side, shaking my head no.
Inuyasha suddenly tensed and I looked behind me.
There he was, Sesshoumaru, the boy who rode the bus with me.
He was with two girls and a boy.
The taller girl had long black hair; it stopped at the middle of her back.
She was as tall as me, maybe even taller.
She was close enough for me to glimpse at her eyes.
They were a beautiful shade of light brown, they looked almost red.
She held onto Sesshoumaru's hand and smiled at me.
I smiled back of course.
I wondered who she was.
Then I looked at the shorter girl.
She looked like she was a year younger than us.
She had long white hair and blunt bangs cut across her forhead.
Her eyes were as black as the pupil.
She was a stunning shade of white, whiter than Kikyou if that was even possible.
She stood at 5'4, the shortest out of the bunch.
The boy, the other one besides Sesshoumaru, was stunning.
He had jet black hair that waved down his back.
His eyes were the same as the taller girl; that light brown almost red.
He looked over at me and smiled.
My knees at that moment felt weak.
I smiled back.
“Kagome, you know my brother?” Inuyasha asked grinding his teeth together.
“Sort of, we met on the bus,” I said shrugging my shoulders.
“He's an asshole, stay away from him please,” He asked politely.
Inuyasha never said please, ever.
So I complied with his wishes and stayed away from him, but he didn't stay away from me.
“Who are the girls that are with him and that boy too?” I asked Inuyasha looking back at the foursome.
“That's Kagura the tall girl whose holding his hand. She's his girlfriend, she seems pretty nice,” He said pointed to her.
“The other girl with the white hair is her little sister Kanna and the boy is Naraku,” He said with a shrug of the shoulders and led Kikyou inside the mall.
I followed behind with Sango and Miroku.
I looked back once more and Gold eyes met with my Ice blue ones.
I stood there for a minute or two before I turned away and walked inside with my friends.
Later that night, on the bus ride home, I had a nagging feeling in my stomach.
The gut wrenching feeling that something had gone terribly wrong.
I prayed to every God I could think of for my Grandfather to be alright.
I knew though, I knew that it was him who was next on Life's hit list.
As soon as I got off of the bus at the stop a few blocks away from my house I ran.
I ran like I had a thousand blood thirsty dogs on my trail.
I got to the shrine steps and skipped every other one on my way up, tripping a few times.
I finally made it to the top, bloodied and bruised from the fight with the stairs.
I broke through the door and stopped at the sight of my Grandfather slumped in the old recliner.
I knew then what had happened.
In his sleep the great Heavenly Kamis took the last person alive in my family.
They took him from me.
I knew right then that Life was out to get me.
Kagome: Aww…now I'm all alone.
Allie: I'm sorry but it has to be this way.
Sesshoumaru: -_-
Allie: Is that all you can say Lord Fluff-n-Puff?
Inuyasha: What'd I tell ya? He's an asshole!
Sango: Poor Kags.
Allie: I know…but you'll see Life doesn't beat her in the end
Sesshoumaru: She's a tough cookie
