Chapter 3: Control
Setsuna struggled against Kane as he tried to run into the cave. "Where's that heartless bastard?! I'll show him what happens when you mess with Setsuna Hideik!"
Kane tried to contain her laughter as he pushed against her arms. "Calm down, he needed my blood to set himself free from an unfair spell. Leave him…"
"Hell no! He hurt you and kidnapped you!"
"Yeah, to apologize and give me my blood back!" Kane argued.
"That sonuvabitch is gonna fry! Let me go!" Setsuna insisted.
"Calm down Mr. Tough Guy! I'm fine, now drop it!" She yelled.
He looked down at her as she scowled. He couldn't help but smile. "Okay, I will. But if he tries anything else…"
"Cut the crap already! You're acting like a high school principal that just got mooned by some idiot!"
Setsuna blinked. "Mooned? What's that?"
Kane's face turned red. "Something you don't need to know." She started pushing him west. "Now let's go home." As they walked along in momentary silence, Kane looked behind her to see the rising sun. "Oh, look at that sunrise." She said breathlessly.
"That early already, eh? Do you think the others are worried about us?" Setsuna casually put an arm around Kane's shoulders.
She shook her head. "I don't think so. Still, we should probably find them before they do get worried." She yawned.
"Are you tired? I could carry you if you like."
She smiled. "I'd like that." He scooped her up piggyback style and she fell asleep with her face buried in his neck.

"He can't go too much further." Mika noted. "We need to stop and let him rest."
Nakura flinched slightly. "No, I'm fine. Continue…"
"No! You sit down and stay here!" From only a few feet away, everybody heard a loud THUD. The girls went over to the source of the sound and found Setsuna under a subdued Kane. A crater had formed under their bodies and smoke was wafting up from Kane's body. "Oops…" Mika muttered.
"`Oops' doesn't cut it." Kane mumbled into the ground. "HEEL!!"
Able to control when she'd land momentarily, Mika folded her hands in front of her like she was praying and accepted her fate. She fell to the forest floor with grace and acceptance.
"Are you okay Setsuna?" Kane asked. He didn't answer as his eyes swirled in his head. "I guess he knows how I feel now."
"Who dares disturb my part of the forest?!" Koya approached from the shadows, bow drawn with an arrow nocked back in the string.
Everybody but Kane did a double take on him. "Hey, you look like cat-boy over there!" Mika pointed out from her crater.
"Guys, this is Setsuna's big brother, Koya. We ran into him last night when his wife needed help delivering her baby. His older son found us and led the way." Kane explained as she stood.
Koya nodded. "Good to see my idiotic brother of mine didn't screw up on rescuing you."
"Thanks, I think." Kane noted.
Setsuna finally came back to reality. "Ow, what happened to me?" He sat up and tried to focus his fuzzy vision by blinking his eyes.
"Mika subdued me; again." Kane explained. Then she saw Nakura's deathly pale face. "What's wrong with Nakura?"
"There's nothing wrong with him; he's just fine!" Mika stood with sudden energy. As everybody stared at her, she blushed. "But why should I care?"
Michi giggled. "Mika, don't deny what you already feel."
"BEG!!" Michi fell and since Ori had been leaning on her shoulder and had spaced out momentarily, he toppled on top of her. With the intimate position they had suddenly taken, Mika snickered in revenge. “Michi, don't deny what you already feel.” She mocked in a high falsetto.
Yuki turned serious and looked over at Kane. "Did you two happen to have felt that quake last night?"
"An earthquake you mean?" Kane inquired, curiosity glowing in her amber eyes.
Mika nodded. "It was the weirdest thing. It started about an hour after we lost sight of you."
"Lost sight of us? You were following me?!" Kane fumed. "How rude!"
"Hey, it wasn't my idea!" Mika fumed. “Michi and Yuki were the ones that forced me to come with them!”
Yuki glared at Mika, who pretended not to notice.
"I'm real sure." Kane huffed and turned away. "Anyway, we didn't exactly feel the quake. All we felt were the tremors that this one tree gave off as the demon awoke and came free."
"Which demon?" Mika asked.
"Some guy who had been captured named Nigiyaka. He had needed my blood to free himself."
Mika pointed an angry and accusing finger at Kane. "I knew you had something to do with it! That's the…"
Mika's insults were cut off by both Koya and Nakura. "Did you say Nigiyaka?!"
Kane blinked. "Yeah, I did. Is something wrong?"
Nakura closed his eyes. "That demon is evil incarnate. He was too powerful and a priestess attempted to kill him. The most she could manage was a spell with a small chance at being broken. They say the only way to break the spell was to obtain the blood of a hanyou maiden of the great dog demon, Inu no Taisho."
Koya nodded and continued where Nakura left off. "Everybody had assumed Inu no Taisho had died not long after his hanyou son, InuYasha, was born. That's why she chose the hanyou daughter of Inu no Taisho. Then you were born." Koya glared at Kane. "A month later, the priestess's descendant ordered your death by any mean possible; yet fate had other plans. Through some twist of fate, the samurai army attacking you was defeated. Your mother threw you down the Bone-Eater's Well to protect you from further harm, and you lived. Now, sixteen years later, you returned and Nigiyaka seized his chance and is loose again," Dropping his bow, he reached for his katana. "All because of you." Unsheathing his sword, he pointed the tip into Kane's face.
She backed up. "B-but I can't help who I am. It's not my fault…InuYasha was the one who brought me back!"
"It's your fault, not because of who you are, but because of your trust."
Setsuna put himself between her and his brother. "Leave her alone Koya."
"Move aside brother. I have no motive to kill you, but I will nonetheless if you choose to remain standing between me and my target." Koya stated. "There is only one way to kill Nigiyaka, and your wench here has not the power to do so."
"Wanna bet? We'll go and kill Nigiyaka. We won't seal him into a tree; he'll die." Setsuna touched the blade of his brother's sword and pointed it away from his face.
"We will?!" Kane blinked in confusion.
Setsuna turned and faced her. "I have faith that you can do it. Trust me on this."
"One day." Koya said as he sheathed his sword. "I'll give you one day to defeat Nigiyaka. If after that he's still alive and free, I will personally kill your hanyou maiden." Koya walked away from the group.
After he was out of hearing range, Setsuna said, "Even if it takes more than a day, we will defeat Nigiyaka. And I will see to it that he doesn't touch you." Setsuna grabbed her hand and squeezed it. "I'll die before you do."
"Who's with us?" Kane asked. "Who wants to defeat Nigiyaka?"
Michi stood with Ori's help. "No doubt we'll help you out. This demon had no right to take advantage of you." She pounded her staff into the ground once.
Mika snorted. "If it'll save Nakura's life and yours, I guess it couldn't hurt." Before Michi could get a word in edgewise, she added, "And it's not because I care; he's a good fighter."
Yuki agreed. "As your half-sister, I will help you."
Kane nodded. "Then we've got no time to waste; let's go."

Nigiyaka watched through Kane's own golden orb's as she walked along with her friends. He could feel her confidence rise with every step and her heart beat faster with anticipation. Then when she looked over at Setsuna, he could feel the swell of emotion in her chest as he talked to her and reassured her when she doubted her own powers. "Such a trustworthy girl. Too bad she lost her trust when those two men told her the truth." He snickered and blinked, losing his vision Kane's eyes saw. “Perhaps her feelings for that cat demon will come in handy in the end.”
He strolled over to the bed of roses Kane had laid on only hours ago. He found one rose in particular and plucked it. On one of the thorns was a solitary drop of blood from his hanyou maiden. "Kane-Sakura, shall we dance?" His mouth curved into a smile as he began to chant.
The spell he chanted was from ancient times, from before he'd been sealed away by that damn priestess. He remembered it well, and could feel the awesome power and potential of it rising in his body. Heat scorched his blood, images reeled through his thoughts of what Kane was seeing. And when the spell was complete, his eyes had changed to an eerie sort of creamy white as he put himself into Kane's mind.
***
"For the last time Myrako, me and Setsuna didn't go into the forest to do that!" Kane's face reddened.
Myrako cocked her head. "Then what did you do?"
"Myrako, leave her alone." Yuki scolded, even though she too was laughing at Kane's embarrassment.
As Kane strolled, Nigiyaka's spell took effect. Her blood ran hot in her veins and her eyes glazed over. Putting her hand to her head, she said, "My…head." She stopped and closed her eyes, her last movement she'd make on her own.
Setsuna stopped and asked, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Her voice was monotonous, but light. "I'm just a little tired from lack of sleep."
Setsuna didn't buy it. "You're somewhat different from before. Are you…?"
"I'm fine, okay?" She turned and smiled. "I'm just trying to concentrate before we face off Nigiyaka."
`Nobody caught on; big mistake on their part. Not that it would matter.' Nigiyaka thought.
Inside Kane's mind, a battle for control ensued. `Why is my body suddenly moving on its own? Guys, help! Somebody's controlling me!' Then she came to a realization. `Nigiyaka did something to my body when he put my blood back in me! That's the only way he could've gained control!'
As the group moved onward, Kane-Sakura stopped. "Hey guys, maybe it's a bad idea to go after Nigiyaka."
Setsuna jolted, surprised by her sudden change in attitude. "Aren't you forgetting Koya? He's going to kill you if we don't destroy Nigiyaka!"
She laughed. "Like he could. I'm too strong for that older half-brother of yours."
Mika suddenly charged forward and seized Kane by the neck. Holding her off of the ground, she asked, "What have you done to the real Kane?!"
"Put her down Mika!" Michi latched onto her arm, but was flung off easily.
"Mika, what has gotten into you?!" Kane pleaded innocently. "I just don't want to go after Nigiyaka!"
"That comment you just stated, about cat-boy's older brother, you've never been that confident before! Now where's the real Kane?!" Mika's grip tightened.
With agility unknown to her, Kane kicked out of Mika's grasp and landed swiftly on the ground. The force and suddenness of the thrust made Mika fall back.
Setsuna stepped towards Kane. She slowly rose from her crouching stance, her claws outstretched. `Setsuna, no! You'll get hurt!' She screamed out in her mind.
"Step down Hideik!" Ori ordered. "She isn't herself and you know it; she means to kill us all!"
Kane's eyes glared at Ori. Ignoring the Neko, she lunged at Ori, her claws glowing an unnatural gold. `Ori, look out!'
He tried to duck, but she was too fast. Her talons slashed at him and cut through his clothing. Holding his chest, he staggered back and fell.
"Ori!" Michi rushed towards him to help, but Kane put herself in front of him. "What's wrong with you?! Knock it off Kane!" Michi cried, tears spilling from her eyes.
She smirked and flew forward, almost flying off the ground. Michi's staff went up to defend herself as Kane continually tried to strike her. Yuki lunged and grabbed Kane from behind by the arms.
"Listen to us! Gain your control back from whoever took it from you!" Yuki yelled in her ear.
`I'm trying Yuki, I'm trying!' She screamed internally. But in response to her half-sister's pleas, Kane unsheathed Teretsu and turned around in a full circle, knocking both Yuki and Michi into trees.
"Kane, knock it off!" Mika rushed forward, Zei, her ice apparition sword, out in the open and glowing. "Don't make me do this to you!"
`Why can't I stop?! Please don't make me kill all of my friends!' Kane couldn't close her eyes as her body flipped out of Mika's reach. Mika's speed and agility easily matched Kane's newly acquired momentum, and she wasn't used to it. Every time she attempted to knock Teretsu out of her hands, Kane would do a flip, spin out of the way, or lean back, depending on the type of move Mika did on her.
The sword dance continued as Setsuna tired to think of something her could do. His eyes closed as he realized that nothing could be done; it was only up to Kane to try and free herself from Nigiyaka's grasp. He grimaced as Kane finally got past Mika's block and brought her sword into the ground, sending off a round of White Diamond Rainfall. Everybody gasped when Mika was caught in the explosion.
Mika struggled to catch her breath from barely missing that attack. `Gods, this is difficult. I don't want to hurt her though.' She narrowed her eyes, then heaved Zei in front of her and charged. `This attack may be the only chance I have left!'
Kane remained in one place until the last second. She briskly dodged it as Mika flew by in a whirlwind. Skidding to a sudden stop, Mika could only look over her shoulder, turn around and watch in horror as the hanyou raised her sword over her head and launched an attack of White Diamond Rainfall. She dropped to her knees and accepted the attack. She and everybody else in the group excluding Setsuna wheeled into the sky after the explosion.
`NOOO!!!' Kane cried out in her head as she smiled outwardly. Then she sniffed the air and realized that there was only one person left that was standing in her way; Setsuna. She turned to him, her eyes glimmering with the intent to kill
`Damn, I'm next!' He cringed. `I have to stop her, or Nigiyaka will succeed in his twisted plot. Then, not only will I die, but so will Kane.'

Sorry this took so long to complete, but Christmas Vacation was hectic. Church, friends coming over, cleaning, partying, etc. were all accountable for keeping me from the computer. It's a little shorter, but that's only because this is how I planned it.
I would like to thank Queen of Cuteys for leaving another review. I'll keep writing as long as you keep reading. That goes out to all of my readers (if there are any out there).
