Kagome sat in her room looking in the mirror. She had to do it, there was no way around it. She had stayed up for hours thinking of a way out and this was it, her only hope. Slowly she reached for the scissors on her desk. Looking at the mirror she put them up to her hair, closing her eyes she quickly snipped it all off. Slowly she opened her eyes; her hair was now down to her ears. Making a few more cuts she could honestly say she looked like a boy, which was what she wanted. Turning back to her bead she quickly donned on the pants and knitted shirt lying there, pulling on the black boats lying there as well. Standing up once again she faced the mirror. The only problem she found was her chest, how could she make it look less… feminine? Looking around her room she found a white sash. Lifting up her shirt she quickly rapped it around her chest, effectively flattening them. Finally satisfied with her discise she quickly went over to her bead. Reaching under her mattress she pulled out a bag that contained food, water and just a little money. Slinging it on her shoulder she took a last look at her room. She would miss some of the luggeries but she had to be free. Turning she walked out of the room, as silent as a mouse.

She had made it out of the house, and was on her way to Harlet.Harlet was the biggest port along the coast. The walk would take at least half a day at least. As she walked her thoughts traveled to what lead her to where she was.

~Flashback~

“MOM how could you? You know I don't want to marry him.” Kagome stood in the hall. Dinner was over and `he' had just left. “Now Kagome, it is time you settled down, you are 18 after all.” Kagome fidgeted with her hands, she new her mother was right but she just wasn't ready to settle down. She had to come up with a good excuse. “I know, but… but I want to marry for love, not convenience.” Her mother walked over to her, lightly placing her hand over Kagome's shoulder. “We gave you time, and you didn't find anyone.” She could not believe what she was hearing. They had actually decided to force her to marry someone. More importantly, someone she didn't love.

~End of Flashback ~

Kagome loved her parents, but she couldn't take it anymore. She was tiered of the expectations her status came with, and of being told what to do. All she wanted was freedom, and know she had it. Kagome walked for about three hours till she decided to stop for a break. It took Kagome till the next afternoon to reach Harlet. Looking around she quickly determined that the town was a very busy one. There were people everywhere. Stores and pubs were booming with customers. Ships were docked, some being loaded with more supplies while others were delivering them. She saw men working, there muscles rippling with the weight. Feeling the need for a drink she made her way into the nearest pub. Pushing through the crowed she entered into a dimly lit room. Tables were placed in different places, some against the wall and others in the middle of the room. It seemed a little sketchy but she found an empty table in the back by the bar. Sitting down she kept a watchful eye on the people around her. Even though she had led a very sheltered life she had still managed to hear stories from the cooks at home about the many fights and other things that happened in bars. A woman approached her table; she wore a low cut dress with no sleeves. Her dark brown hair making curls down to her mid back, eyes a light blue that seemed to contradict the laid back stance of her stride. “What can I gecha, kid?” Dropping her voice an octave, making it a little huskier she gave a brief answer. “Something to drink.” The woman looked at Kagome with a irritated glare, “Any thin' specific?” Trying to lighten the heated mood she gave a very small smile with her reply, “Mild, please. Somethin' mild.” There was a pause, then the woman's face relaxed. She was about to turn away to go get her drink when her face was filled with confusion. Kagome immediately new she had slipped up at the look on the woman's face. “What's a nice guy like you doin' in a pub?” At the confused look on Kagome's face she continued. “Most boy's in pubs don' use no manners here.” Thinking fast she let another small smile grace her lips. Leaning forward she winked as she said, “Just `cause we `aint high class don' mean we can't have manners.” Seeming to accept that answer she turned back and went to get the drink. Kagome let a sigh escape as she slumped back in her chair. The woman soon came back with her drink. As the woman placed it on the table her voice was friendly, “My name is Jessie, if you be a needen anythin' more just holler.” Nodding her head Kagome gratefully took a swig of the drink, finding it to be the best tea she had ever tasted. As she set the cup back on the table her eyes scanned the pub once again, then stopped as they met with a pair of ____. Taking in his appearance quickly she saw that his shoulder length hair was pulled into a low ponytail. He wore a pare of black, loose fit pants with a light brown, knit shirt. His face was sun burnt and wind blown, with chapped lips that seemed to frown with confusion. He was sitting on the other side of the room but she could still see his piercing gaze. She stared back at him wondering if he had herd the conversation between her and Jessie, but she didn't think it possible.
