Chapter Five: Modern: The First Day in Modern Times
 
“Ow, watch where you're walking!”
 
“I'm trying!”
 
“It was your idea to take the stairs!”
 
The whole group argued all the way up to the apartment. Each one was carrying a tower of very heavy boxes, and more than once someone had fallen down a flight. Well, except for Inuyasha, who carried many boxes with ease.
 
“Here it is! Shippou, open the door!”
 
The kitsune hopped on top of the boxes with the key, and, with a click, opened the door.
 
While Miroku and Sango literally threw the boxes down, Inuyasha set them down with ease.
 
“You should've just given them to me to carry,” Inuyasha said, annoyed.
 
The apartment was rather large; two bedrooms and one bathroom. Inuyasha sniffed around the room.
 
“Strange smell," he said.
 
“Kanaye's real talented,” Sango said, as Kirara mewed on her shoulder.
 
“Yeah,” Miroku added, looking around. “It's like I've been in this time my whole life.”
 
He looked at his right hand, his Kazaana hand. He peeked through the flap (disguised as a bandage).
 
“What is it?”
 
“It's almost gone…”
 
“What, it hasn't disappeared already?” Sango said in concern. “We did defeat Naraku, didn't we?”
 
“Yes, but because it grew so large, it's having a hard time going away…and if anyone asks, I'll tell them I burned my hand.”
 
“But...?”
 
“Not to worry, my dear Sango,” Miroku said, taking her hands. Sango turned bright red. “My Kazaana is nothing more than a useless hole. Its powers are diminishing.”
 
Sango yanked her hands from Miroku's grasp, muttering, “Hentai.
 
Inuyasha sat down on one of the boxes.
 
“And these clothes…what the hell?”
 
Inuyasha hadn't seen clothes quite like them. He wore a red t-shirt with sleeves that only came up to his elbow. His pants were made out of a blue, rough material that hugged his legs. And the shoes…he growled as he took them off. He didn't quite mind sandals, but these covered his whole foot, which was uncomfortable. Miroku, Shippou, and Sango were wearing similar clothes, except Miroku wore a purple shirt and Sango a green shirt. Shippou's clothes were similar to the ones he had in the feudal era, except he too wore the blue material and a shirt of bright orange.
 
Something in his pocket vibrated, and he took it out. It was small, metallic, and cobalt blue. Although in the back of his head he had no idea what it was or how to use it, he automatically flipped the top and pressed a green button, and spoke into it.
 
“Hello?”
 
“I see you made it there safely.”
 
“Kanaye…you're one hell of a good shaman,” Inuyasha said.
 
“I will take that as a compliment,” he said. “What you're talking into is actually the rock I gave each of you. The device is called a `cell phone', I think.”
 
Inuyasha remembered Kagome mentioning something of that sort when she was in the feudal times.
 
“Anyway, I have come to say something you probably know already.”
 
“School tomorrow, we know,” Inuyasha replied.
 
“Yes. And the school you'll attend is the same one Kagome will be attending. I know that you'll meet her, but do not go up to her. Because of the curse, she won't remember exactly who you are, but you'll feel familiar to her.”
 
“Okay, so let her come to me?”
 
“Exactly. It may take a while, but be patient. Oh yes, Inuyasha, are you wearing the talisman?”
 
“Yeah, why?”
 
“Good. I made a slight change on the talisman. You see, I decided to take an extra precaution before I sent you to modern times. When the Fang is not with you, the talisman will not come off anyway.”
 
“That's like my rosary, damn it!” Inuyasha roared into the cell phone.
 
“You'll be glad of it, I promise.”
 
Sure enough, as Inuyasha tried to pull it off, it grew tighter around his head.
 
“Damn it!” he roared, outraged.
 
“See, can't be done,” Kanaye said. “You'll have to get used to it.”
 
Inuyasha growled angrily into the phone. Kanaye ignored him.
 
“Be sure to forward this to Miroku and Sango, too.”
 
“And Shippou? What about him?”
 
“I've taken care of that. A tutor shall teach him from home.”
 
“Okay, good. Hopefully that runt won't get in trouble…”
 
“Well, Inuyasha, that is all I needed to say. Good luck and sayonara.”
 
“Sayonara.”
 
Inuyasha pushed the red button on the phone.
 
“What did he say?”
 
“Just to remind us about tomorrow.”
 
He tried again, to take off the talisman, but it glowed and grew tighter.
 
“Damn it,” he hissed.
 
“You nervous, Inuyasha?” Miroku asked.
 
“Keh! I'm never nervous!”
 
“Yeah, right,” Shippou muttered.
 
“What did you say, runt?!” Inuyasha roared.
 
“Nothing,” Shippou said quickly, fearing he would get smacked on the head similar to that way before they went to modern times.
 
Inuyasha opened a box to find the Tetsusaiga. Kanaye's words rang in Inuyasha's non-human ears. “It won't come off anyway…”
 
Does he think I'll hurt Kagome? Inuyasha thought. Keh! He'd better think again
 
“Hey, let's start undoing these boxes, it'll take us a while to unpack everything…”

And so it began.
 
As they got ready, the doorbell ran at their apartment. When Inuyasha opened the door. A tall black-haired woman stood there, with green eyes. Her hair was so long it brushed the floor.
 
“Who are you?” Inuyasha asked.
 
“My name is Mizuko Kaiya. I'm supposed to be the tutor of one Shinkirou Shippou…”
 
Shippou was staring up at the girl with something like fear. “Are you a youk—“
 
“Shh!” He said to Shippou. “Hajimemashite.”
 
“Hajimemashite, Inuyasha-kun,” she said.
 
“Come in.”
 
She walked in. “And you must be Shippou. Ohayou gozaimasu.”
 
Shippou nodded (in fear because she looked a bit like a youkai).
 
“Heheh, don't worry. I'm nothing to be scared of.”
 
Shippou shyly looked away. “Okay…you look like Kagome.”
 
“Kagome?”
 
“Old friend,” Inuyasha said.
 
“You mean Higurashi Kagome?”
 
“…Yeah,” Inuyasha said. “You know her?”
 
“She's related to me,” Kaiya said. “Distantly, but yeah, we're related. She's going to remedial school…she was in an accident and was in a coma…how do you know her?”
 
“Ah…” Inuyasha said. “I knew her when I was little.”
 
“I see.”
 
“So…you're gonna teach this little runt?”
 
“Yep. He's sweet.”
 
Inuyasha looked around. “We'd better get going,” he said. “We'll talk to you later.”

The first day had not turned out as bad as they thought it would be. Well, maybe not for Inuyasha. The ears and hair always attracted unwanted attention.
 
After classes, Inuyasha walked into the library with Miroku and Sango and sat at one of the tables.
 
“Well?” Miroku said. “How was your day?”
 
Inuyasha only replied with “These damn ears.” He tried to loosen the tie on his uniform. It was rather uncomfortable. How can people in this time stand these clothes?
 
“Hey…I saw others with ears,” Sango whispered. “Over there. I didn't see what sort of hanyous they were.”
 
Inuyasha also spotted a boy and a girl, both with ears like his. They seemed to notice his ears, too. The girl walked off, leaving the boy to read.
 
Inuyasha walked to where the boy was. He noticed he was reading a book on feudal warfare. Spotting a sword that looked like Tetsusaiga in its rusty form, Inuyasha said, “I have one like that.”
 
The boy looked up. “You do?”
 
“Yeah. Belonged to my old man.”
 
His non-human ears twitched. “Lucky. I want one…and I wanna learn how to use it. Do you fight with yours?”
 
“Not as much as I used to,” Inuyasha said.
 
“An heirloom, huh?” the boy said. “Obviously not a human blade.”
 
“What?”
 
“You're a hanyou, right?”
 
“Yeah, you?”
 
“Yeah…oh, I'm Hoshikuzu Kaemon,” the boy said, bowing.
 
“Kariudo Inuyasha,” he said. “Hajimemashite. You're an inu hanyou?”
 
“Nope, close, though,” Kaemon said. “I'm an ookami hanyou.”
 
Inuyasha nodded. “It is nice to know I'm not the only hanyou.”
 
“I know how you feel. I used to think that same way until I met Kaida.”
 
“Kaida?”
 
“My girlfriend. Raiko Kaida. She's a neko hanyou.”
 
A girl with long brown hair and furry ears entered the same aisle as them.
 
“Hey, Kaida,” Kaemon said. “This guy says he has a sword like this.”
 
“That's nice,” she said, though she didn't sound particularly interested. “Oh, an inu hanyou? Interesting. I'm Raiko Kaida. Hajimemashite.”
 
“Kariudo Inuyasha,” he said, then thought of Kagome. “Hey, I'm looking for someone. She's human, she's got long black hair, her name's Kagome. Have you seen her?”
 
“Oh, Higurashi Kagome?”
 
“Yeah, that's her. You know her?”
 
“She's in one of my classes,” Kaida said. “She's really nice.”
 
Inuyasha's heart leaped. “Where is she?”
 
“I think she's over there,” Kaida said, pointing to the other side of the building.
 
“Thanks.”
 
“Hey, Inuyasha,” Kaemon said as he turned to leave, “D'you think that one day you could show me that sword you have? I'd love to see it.”
 
Inuyasha smiled. “Maybe.”
 
Kaemon smiled, and he looked rather excited. His face quickly dropped as Kaida hit him on the back of the head. “Baka!”
 
“What'd I'd do?”
 
Inuyasha left Kaemon and Kaida to argue and walked over the other side of the building. He looked through all of the aisles until he found her.
 
Inuyasha's heart did backflips at the sight of her. She was just as beautiful, if not more. She was more mature, but still the same Kagome, just older. Despite that he broke out in a sweat and his heart was going mad, he pretended to browse through the books.
 
Meanwhile, Kagome had been looking in a book that was rather boring, but was needed for one of her classes. She couldn't believe such a book would even be legal, it was so boring…
 
Her eye caught the boy in the aisle next to her. He had white hair, and two dog ears on his head.
 
He looks really familiar…but don't be silly, Kagome. You've never seen him before…
 
Or have I?
 
After much debate, she walked over to the boy and tapped his shoulder. He turned to her.
 
“Konnichiwa,” he said.
 
“Konnichiwa,” she replied. “Gomen ne, but…I feel like I know you.”
 
“Really?” he said with a nervous smile. “Don't know why, we've never met.”
 
“I know…but you look familiar, and it was really bugging me.”
 
You have no idea, Inuyasha thought.
 
“Oh, sorry, I didn't introduce myself,” she said. “I'm Higurashi Kagome.”
 
“Hajimemashite,” Inuyasha said. “Kariudo Inuyasha.”
 
She gave him a look that said I've-heard-that-name-before. “Who are your friends over there?”
 
Inuyasha looked over, and, to his horror, Miroku, Sango, Kaemon, and Kaida were looking at him, slightly amused.
 
“Let me introduce you,” he said through his teeth. I'll get them for this…But at least she talked to you…maybe her memory will return…
 
“Wait.”
 
“Hmm?”
 
“I know this sounds weird, but…can I tweak your ears?”
 
Inuyasha smiled. Well, if it helps her memory…
 
“Okay.”
 
She tweaked his ears. “Wow, they're so soft…two others in my class have ears like yours. They're so cute!”
 
Inuyasha looked out of the corner of his eye, and Miroku and Sango were roaring with laughter. Kaemon and Kaida were too, though they seemed to understand, having ears like his.
 
“Am I annoying you?” Kagome said, seeing that Inuyasha looked angry. “I'm sorry, I'll leave…”
 
“No, no, It's okay. Lots of people ask to touch my ears. I'm used to it. Now, let me introduce you…”

At the end of the day, Inuyasha said goodbye to Kagome, not feeling as bad as he did before. But Inuyasha let his temper out when they got to the apartment.
 
“Damn monk!” Inuyasha yelled when they arrived home. “What the hell is your problem?”
 
“Kagome still loves your ears,” Miroku said, trying to catch his breath. “And you let her do it!”
 
“I'm doing it so maybe her memory will come back, baka!”
 
“We weren't the only ones,” Sango said, Kirara hopping into her arms. “Kaemon and Kaida thought it was funny. I guess they understand. The both of them are really nice.”
 
“Am I interrupting something?” Kaiya said, with Shippou on her shoulder. “I must go. May I ask what will keep him well-behaved?”
 
Inuyasha's temper flared. “Shippou, you runt, what did you do?”
 
“I don't like reading!” Shippou whined. “It's hard!”
 
“All things are hard when you first try them,” Miroku said. “You just need to practice.”
 
“To answer your question, Shippou likes sweets,” Inuyasha said.
 
“Does he become hyper?”
 
“If he eats too much, yeah.”
 
“I see. Shippou, when I come back tomorrow, I'll have sweets for you. But I'll let you have it only if you can behave.”
 
The kitsune pouted, then said, “Okay…”
 
“I'll see you tomorrow, Shippou,” Kaiya said, putting him on the ground. “Sayonara.”
 
“Sayonara,” Shippou said.
 
Inuyasha's cell phone rang.
 
“Hello?”
 
Kanaye's voice came through the phone. “So? How was it?”
 
“Not bad…”
 
“Glad to hear that. And I'm happy to see Kagome came to you.”
 
“Wait a minute, you saw…”
 
“I watched it. I did not know she had a fondness for your ears, Inuyasha.”
 
Inuyasha growled into the phone, but Kanaye laughed.
 
“I say that in jest. Anyway, I have come with good news and bad news.”
 
“Good news first.”
 
“The good news is that hanyous exist in that time. I'm sure you saw that. The bad news? Well, that also means that there is youkai, and I don't think all of them are as pleasant.”
 
“Not surprising.”
 
“Yes. I'm still trying to figure out who could be responsible besides Naraku. Here, there is an ill wind around…and I do not like it one bit. Be careful. Sayonara.”
 
“Sayonara.”

That night, Inuyasha was deep in thought, today's events stirring in his mind. Ill omens, hanyous in present times…what did it all mean?...
 
“Damn Naraku,” he muttered.
 
Kagome had come to him, so there was maybe a fragment of a memory deep down. Inuyasha hoped there was.
 
Kagome…I love you…please, remember…
 
Inuyasha fell into sleep, tears falling from his eyes.
