Author's Notes:
Hey there. This isn't my first attempt at makin' a fan fiction, though this will be the first time I'll ever try publishin', if only at least online. There will be no reference to the Feudal Era whatsoever. The lead characters in this fan fiction are expected to be around 14-15 years of age. The age of other individuals like parents, teachers and elderly may be speculated. If you wish to, reviews are accepted. If needed be, address me by the name Korbit, a weird alias that has managed to grow on me over the years. Enjoy. ^^

Disclaimer:
The characters in this fan fiction are based on the characters in Rumiko Takahashi manga, InuYasha. I make no claims that I gave birth to any of them. But, if only for the sake of the story, I may need to invent characters that weren't featured on the said manga.

FRESHMAN YEAR
CHAPTER 1 First Day

3.00 am

Great, it has been over two hours since I went to my room to sleep. Why can't I sleep? Am I excited to go back?? I won't be seeing anyone special, just the same old bunch of crappy people. Hmm.. must be the coffee.

6.30 pm

Kagome opened her eyes, closed them, grunted and laid her head back on the pillow. Her mom was making noises downstairs, the radio was on full blast and Kagome can hear the morning news as if she had her ears pressed to the speakers. She grumbled, thought about how she hated her mother and got up.

“Damn! It's impossible to sleep with these people!” she cried out.

Since she turned fourteen, she didn't bother not using “erroneous” words anymore. Every now and then her mother will catch her saying one and would reprimand her, but it didn't really scare her. The best her mother would do is nag, but, come to think of it, Kagome hated that about her mother the most.

She went to the bathroom to check herself out. Her round face stared back at her. Looks like she gained five pounds over the summer. Her long black hair was all over the place, some were tangled, and some were sticking to her face thanks to the heat. It was in the early weeks of June but the climate was endurable, the sweat must be from rolling over and tossing around all night.

Instead of just brushing her teeth, she picked up a towel and went in the shower. She turned the thermostat one degree lower and savored the icy cold water on her hot skin. She looked down and she saw her stomach. It was like a big bulge in the middle of her body. She kneaded it, punched it lightly and poked it. But like always, it didn't disappear. She had it since she was young. She has always been fat.

She went out of the shower after twenty minutes, got into her uniform and went downstairs. It was havoc. Her brother's toys were sprawled out in the floor. The radio was still on and the broadcaster laughed so hard while commenting on the country's economy. Kagome went straight for it and pulled the plug. The silence that followed was relief… and short.

“Oh no! Ha, mom says never to touch the radio! You know how she likes to listen to her news!” her little brother, Souta, exclaimed while pointing a finger at her. On the other arm he held a big action figure of some wrestler. Kagome couldn't stand her brother's voice as much as her mother's. She loathed them both for being in her life. She wanted out. She wanted away from them.

“SHUT UP!!! SHUT UP YOU PATHETIC LITTLE LOSER!” she screamed. Souta looked scared and his eyes started to water but Kagome didn't care. “You! I hate you so much! You ruin my morning, you ruin everything! GO AWAY! I hate you!!!!”

“Nee-chan.” he whispered.

“No! I'm not your sister, I don't know you!” Kagome inched closer to her brother. She took the toy from him and used it to hit him in his butt. Hard. He started really crying now. “There! Cry, you monster. I hate you! I hate you!”

“Kagome! Stop that right now!” Her mother had heard the noises from the kitchen. She ran to Kagome, took the toy and slapped her. “What are you thinking? You have no right to hurt your brother!”

Kagome caressed her cheek and looked hard at her mother. She didn't blink. She didn't respond.

“I've just about had it with you, young lady.” Her mother continued. “You have been acting like a sick dog for a while and don't think I haven't noticed. You might be going through a rough time, growing up fast and all, but that doesn't entitle you to do anything you want!”

“I'm outta here.” Kagome said. She went across the table and took her bag, which she had prepared yesterday evening. Kagome took her packed lunch and went for the door.

Her mother got to the door before she did. “Apologize to your brother.” She said in a commanding tone.

“Yeah, yeah,” Kagome said. She often apologized, so her mother won't bug her about it any longer than she had to. “I'm sorry, knucklehead.”

“Kagome!”

“I'm sorry, Souta.” Kagome said in a hushed voice. It irritated her. Saying sorry for showing your emotions is stupid for her.

“Now, dry your hair.” Her mother attempted to pull her into the living room. “You might catch a cold, going outside with wet hair like that.”

“Duh?!” an exasperated cry. “It's summer, it'll dry outside. And if I get sick…”

She put on her shoes and grabbed the door. “… at least I have claim to not go to school for a while.”

Kagome hurried outside, not wanting her mother to make up another excuse to get her to stay for breakfast. She looked at her watch. 7.00 am. She had an hour before school to spare. Her school was a bus ride and a few walks away from her house. It was fairly mall compared to the other schools around the area, with only a pre-school, elementary and high school. She was an incoming freshman. And she wondered what high school would be like.

She didn't worry about academics. She has been on the top of the honor roll since first grade. She was always the one the teachers admired. She was good in arts and debate. She was into books. Though she wasn't really that into math and the sciences, she didn't do poorer than a B+. What Kagome wanted to know was how much more freedom she can have, having longer hours and excuse to stay out late.

Kagome fished her card from her pocket and swiped it at the slot near the driver, then got off the bus. A few steps then she turned left and saw students wearing the same uniform. She saw her closest thing to a best friend, Sango, a few steps before her. Suddenly in a mood for small talk, she jogged over to where Sango was.

“Sango! Wait up!” Sango smiled at her.

Sango was half an inch taller than Kagome but they were both fair and had long black hair. They looked alike, except that Kagome was a bit “healthier”, as Sano put it. In truth, Kagome was about 5 kilos heavier than Sango. But she was tall, though, so she didn't look that chunky.

“Oh, Kagome! How was your summer?” Sango asked, lacing her arm with Kagome's. Her shirt was shorter than Kagome's by about an inch and a half. Kagome wondered if Sango'd grown taller still. She looked and it was relieved that their half inch gap didn't increase much.

Kagome looked at Sango, she looked a bit darker. It was obvious that she had been at the beach. That was so like Sango, always outdoors, active, playing sports. Kagome was nothing like that. She barely went out. She loved doing “inside” things, like draw, read, watch her films and listen to music. “Well, I've seen the entries to the recent CineAwardia.” Kagome said sheepishly. Sango would always encourage her to leave her movies and do something active. “And, I've been walking around, and I tried to learn how to bike.”

Sango smiled, knowing how Kagome would try to look active with her. “Great, haha, next time, try to actually bike!” she laughed. “Obviously, the family went to the beach. I got you lovely shells. I knew you'd love that.”

Kagome smiled. She loved this girl. There has been many times when she wished Sango was her sister and that she didn't have a brother. Her mother may have been closer to her if there where only girls in the family. They could do more things together. If her mother had time for her.. if she didn't need to take care of Souta all the time.

“Im excited!” Kagome finally said. She recognized it for the first time.

“Me, too!” Sango agreed. “I hope we get to do more things, and meet new people. Some of our friends went to other schools, you know? Hahahaha, I hope there are cute boys!”

“Sango!” Kagome blushed a little. She's never had a boyfriend before. She was into romantic things, but she was scraed of loving. Her relationship with Souta was the only girl-guy relationship she has, upon losing her father as a child. Kagome was afraid that she'd hate boys, hate their ways and how they talked and eat and did things. “I.. I..”

“Lighten up, Kags!” Sango elbowed her. They were now inside the school gates and on their way to the school theater where a freshman assembly will be held to welcome the newcomers. “Boys are fun if you give them a chance.” Kagome couldn't agree nor disagree.

“I hope so…” Kagome tried to be hopeful, she had to. She wasn't out to find herself a boyfriend but she thought it may be fun. Forgetting the thought, they went inside the theater.

The school theater was huge. It was made to sit 20,000 people. Even though the school population is only a few thousands over this, and no event required every student to be at the theater at once, the area was often used for other activities, like concerts and as venues for awarding and other ceremonies. The school was in fact a branch of a larger school that had a college wing to it so it was well funded and renowned as a good school.

There were centralized air conditioner, CCTV cameras, carpeting and huge speakers. Gold and soft yellow colors adorn the walls, adding a calming, homey effect to the place. The carpets were a strike difference in deep red with intricate patterns in an array of plums, blues and violets. There where three main entrances: the biggest at the center and two more at the sides that were a bit narrower. There were exit, entrance and fire escape signs over head in green and red neon lights.

All the heat from her encounter with her brother and her mother has subside. And due to showering with icy water, Kagome was shivering, wishing she had grabbed a jacket or a sweat suit. She and Sango were seating front center so they can “catch all the action” which Sango obviously wanted. Some of their elementary classmates found them, like Kikyo, Naraku, Kouga, Houjo, Yuki, Eri, Ayumi. Kikyou was busy brushing her hair and tying them into pigtails. Kagome was shocked that she chopped off her long hair and traded it in for her new `do: shoulder length layers with side-swept bangs. Kagome felt insecure about her plain straight hair, even Sango had bangs for crying out loud! Naraku was playing with a Rubik's cube and Kouga and Houjo were sharing comments on the new summer-release Play Station games they had. The girls on the other hand were sharing their vacation stories.

Kagome looked around and realized that most of the freshmen were from her elementary. She didn't know them all, but was sure she had seen them before. `Alright. I wonder, why is it that most from my elementary go here?' Then she realized that this was the nearest high school to their community. Living near the forest did not post that much of an edge when it comes to being near commercial places and the newest `hot spots' on town.

“Kagome, are you okay?” Sango asked. Kagome was looking over to her right, which still had two seats empty, and not talking. “You seem cold. Hey, are you too cold?” Sango took her hands and felt them shaking. “Hey! You want out of here?”

“No, we can't. We have to be here.” Kagome said, trying to fight off the shaking. “'Sides, I wouldn't miss my first assembly, I'm an honor student. I have a reputation.” She tried to joke. Sango looked at her; she wasn't buying any of it.

“Okay, okay..” Kagome said. “I'd get something hot outside.” She sat up, took some bills and left her bag at her seat. “Save this one for me. Uh,” Kagome counted. “Center aisle, sixth row.” Kagome waved and excused herself from the group. She heard Kouga ask Sango where she was headed. “I'll be right back, Kouga. I'm just getting something.” She smiled, she didn't want Kouga following her. Though it wasn't anything formal, Kouga loved acting like her boyfriend, or a guardian of some sorts. Kagome always figured it was just to show off to Sango, but Sango knew better. Kouga liked Kagome, but Kagome would never figure that out alone.

Kagome made her way past the other students who were entering the theater. She checked her watch; she had fifteen minutes until the assembly started. There will be performances and speeches. Kagome thought of missing the first part, the welcome speeches, but she knew that Sango will get mad. She didn't need her chewing at her heels, too.

“I'll have hot chocolate, please.” Kagome said to the seller by the theater's mini canteen. “Is ten okay?” The woman by the counter smiled and took the bill. “Sure. Hey, you may want to hurry with the drink. The program's starting, right?”

“Uh, yeah, I know.” Kagome said. “I think I have enough time, thank you.”

She took the cup and sat at one of the empty chairs around a wood dark-glossed table. She pressed her hands to her face and felt warm. She thought of missing the start of the program again. `I'll just tell Sango I forgot where they were and sat at the back.' She thought.

“Hey there, are you a freshman?” a guy's voice. `Oh crap! The welcome committee keeps track of people outside?!' Kagome looked up and saw a guy maybe a year older than she was. He had silver hair that went past his shoulder's length. It was tossed around, in an I-could-care-less-about-my-looks way, but looked good anyway. “Me? No, why?” Kagome lied.

The guy chuckled. “No way you're not a freshman, why be here? The upper class men already have classes.” He sat down and placed his burger and cola at the table. He reached out across the table and held his hand out. “This is great. An escape pal on the first day. Is that okay? I'm Ashitaka InuYasha.”

Kagome tilted her head. “Hi, I'm Kagome. I have warm hands.” Another thunderous laugh came from the guy. “Warm hands? Ahahahahaha, great!” Kagome flushed, her blood rushing in, her heart pumping stronger. “I, I mean, from holding my cup.” She looked back to the way to the theater. “I, uh, I felt cold, so..” He took her hand. “Oh, yeah. I'm Ashitaka InuYasha,” he repeated. “You are?”

“Uhn… I'm Higurashi. Higurashi Kagome.” Kagome was wondering what the hell this guy was doing and why he was here. Since he wasn't in any class, he most probably is a freshman as well. Was he from the same elementary school? Kagome doesn't seem to think so, but then again, she didn't really know everyone from their batch; being a public school, it was populated. He mentioned `escape pal', the hell is that?
