Inuyasha stretched as he walked out the entrance to the school, yawning loudly. When Terrance had told him that the test was scored not only on correctness of answers but on time as well, Inuyasha had thought it wouldn't be longer than two or three hours. It felt weird leaving the school after sundown. For Terrance to even be allowed to keep a student here this long after hours showed just how much trust the principle had for him.
Eight hours for that weird ass test is eight hours too long. Eight hours for any test is too long. He was hungry too. Since the entire test was timed as a single part, no breaks were given. He could have at least warned me so I could eat lunch or something first…
After he finished, the suited man had simply closed the laptop, slid it into a case, and left without a word. Terrance said he could leave after that, but first, he had to promise to keep what was on the test a secret. Happy just to leave, Inuyasha agreed. From what Inuyasha could tell as he was leaving, Terrance was going to stay even longer.
Walking towards home, Inuyasha pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and turned it off silent mode. Glancing at the display, he was surprised to find two messages and ten missed calls and a text message from Miroku. Scanning through the missed calls, they were all from the house phone, meaning his parents had tried contacting him. Sighing, he deleted the messages without listening to them. Miroku knew where he was going and Sango would find out from him. Therefore, it was reasonable either one of them would have told Kagome where he was going to be so she would then pass that information along to their parents. He was staying late at school, why the hell were they freaking out? Besides, it wasn't even that late. The time on the cell phone said 8:14. It took around fifteen minutes to walk home from school so he would be home around the half hour. Ten calls in two hours was a little paranoid.
Opening the text message, he quickly scanned it. Miroku was just wondering what time he was going to get out. Still walking, Inuyasha quickly sent him a text saying he just got out. It took five minutes for Miroku to text back.
So what was the test for?
I guess it was an application test or something. Terrance said they had strict standards.
Inuyasha waited for him to reply.
Strict standards and you are trying to get in it? Good luck.
Frowning, Inuyasha pressed the speed dial, calling Miroku. I should have just done this from the start.
“Yo,” Miroku answered. “So, what was the test?”
“It was weird. I've never taken any test like it before.”
“What was on it? Was it like a final for everything or something?”
“No, it wasn't like a normal test. It was—” He suddenly remembered back to Terrance telling him he had to keep what was on the test a secret. “Really hard to explain.”
“Uh-huh. Anyway, I was hopping you would have gotten out earlier. We went and did karaoke earlier.”
“We?” Inuyasha asked. Had he gotten out earlier, he might have gone. He didn't like to sing… ever… but it was fun just hanging out and watching everyone else make an ass out of themselves. Though, he had to admit, Kagome and Sango weren't too bad when they tried duo songs.
“Yeah, Me, Sango, Kagome, Kouga, Kikyo… you know, usual people.” Inuyasha wrinkled his nose at the mention of Kouga. Now he definitely wouldn't have gone. Just the thought that he might someday be his brother-in-law made his skin crawl. Woh now, let's not get ahead of things… They have only been dating for a few months. The possibility of marriage is way out there at this point. Still, the thought of Kagome eventually getting married to someone didn't sit well with his stomach.
“Ah, sorry I missed it,” Inuyasha said, not sparing any sarcasm.
“I know Kouga isn't your best friend or anything, but I really think you should try to get along with him. After all, he is your sisters' boyfriend. I get along with the heathens spawned from the loins of the most evil spawn of hell to ever walk the Earth. Also, they are known as Sango's brothers.”
“I know, I know, it's just that something doesn't sit right with me about him, you know?”
“Know? Of course I know. Kouga is just one of your standard issue jock assholes who think they are God's gift to everyone lucky enough to stand in their glorious presence. It's the same type of person who bullies guys like us. Come to think of it, we are kind of lucky that was. With him dating your sister, he gets all the other assholes to stay away from us.”
“Miroku, no one ever bullied us.”
“My point exactly! You're lucky you have such a hot sister.” God, if he only knew… Inuyasha ran a hand over his face as Miroku continued. “Since everyone wants to date your sister, or at least, stay on her good side, no one would dare touch you. And since I am your best friend, I get put in under that protective umbrella too.”
“Oh, so that's how it is,” he said, not really paying attention. His mind drifted back to the missed calls. “Hey, I wanted to ask you, did Kagome go home after school or did all of you go directly after school?”
“We all went directly there, why?”
“I just got some calls from my parents.”
“Odd, she did call them to tell them she was going with us and that you were still at school. Besides, we all left at six so she should have gotten home already.”
“I guess I'll just have to find out what they wanted when I get home.”
“Okay. Well, I have to get going. I'm heading over to Sango's so she can help me study for that history test tomorrow.”
“You're just now studying for that?”
“Yeah, there a problem with that?” Inuyasha shook his head, not that Miroku could see him.
“What were you doing all this time?” There was a brief moment of silence before Miroku answered.
“My monk is level 44…”
“I thought we agreed not to level our mains without the other!” Now he was three levels lower than Miroku… Wonderful.
“Hey, it's not my fault someone hasn't been on lately. Don't worry, you'll catch up quickly. But really, I have to go! Sango is going to be pissed as it is!”
“Yeah, yeah, good luck lover boy. Hope you don't `study' too hard.” Miroku hung up. Sighing, Inuyasha closed his cell phone, turned silent back on and slid it back into his pocket. He really didn't want to head home right away. Changing his course, he headed towards one of the nearby Ramen shops. If I'm going to have to listen to a lecture again, I might as well do so on a full stomach.
********************************************
“I'm back,” Inuyasha said, closing the door behind him as he took off his shoes.
“Inuyasha! Where have you been?!” his mother cried, appearing in the hall from the living room.
“Didn't Kagome tell you? I was at school.” God, no reason to get so panicked.
“Until nine thirty?!”
“I didn't know how long the test would take and I stopped and got something to eat after… Why, did something happen?”
“Well… no… but you weren't answering you phone…”
“Test, what test?” his father said, voice grave as he stepped out into the hall behind his mother. Ah… oops… He hadn't told anyone yet what he was planning. Guess they would find out sooner or later.
“It was an application test… Anyways, it doesn't really matter? Where's Kagome?”
“Kagome isn't home right now,” his mother answered. Now that he was here, she seemed to be calming down a little.
“I still want to know about this test,” his father said, refusing to let the conversation be changed.
“Wait, how come I get yelled at when I come home `late' yet Kagome is still out?”
“She's with Kouga,” his mother answered.
“Oh yeah, that makes it better.”
“I want to know about that test!” his father said, raising his voice. Inuyasha unconsciously stepped back.
“Like I said, it was just an application test. I've been talking to Terrance about going to college.” His voice was low as he looked down at the ground.
“College! That's wonderful! Isn't that right dear?” his mother said, looking over her shoulder. He knew she was trying to play peacemaker, but the look on his fathers face didn't change.
“What college?” His fathers' voice was heavy.
“I don't know.” He felt his throat tighten. This isn't going to go well.
“Do you know where at least?” Inuyasha felt his heart pounding against his chest, sweat forming on his palms. He felt the pressure from both his parents' stares weigh down on him.
“It's in America.”
“America!” his mother cried.
“Absolutely not!” his father said at the same time.
“What? Why? You two went to college in America. Isn't that where you met?”
“You are not going to America and that is final.”
“You have to be kidding me! Terrance said if I got in, tuition and boarding is free. Not to mention I would get paid for things like food and such. The college even gets you a job in the field you are studying in!”
“My answer still stands.”
“What the hell! Since when do I have to get your permission to do what affects my future? There isn't a college in Japan that will do what this one will and you know it!”
“You don't even know the name of it! What kind of test was it?” Inuyasha was almost thrown off by how quickly he changed the conversation.
“How the hell does that fit in to this?”
“Just tell me!”
“It was a fucking test! You know? They ask a question and you answer it! What the fuck else do you want to know about it?”
“Inuyasha!” his mother shrieked. Yelling was rare for him, yelling and cussing was completely out there.
“This is bullshit! I come home from planning my future only to get chewed out for being out `late', yet Kagome is out doing God-knows-what. Not to mention I am suddenly banned from America. Wonderful? Any other fucking thing you want to add to the list? China? Europe? How about the world while we're at it? Well how about this: I. Don't. Care. If I get accepted, I'm going. End of discussion.” He stormed over to the stairway before either of them could stop him.
“Hey! I'm not done talking to you!”
“Well I'm done listening! Maybe when you start explaining things, I'll listen again. Until then: Good night.”
When he got to his room, he slammed the door, locking it. Grabbing his headphones and PSP, he turned the volume to max and started playing, letting the blaring music drown out everything around him.
Just when things were starting to look up, this had to happen. It was like something was trying its best to leech away any chance he had at happiness. It wasn't like he wanted to go to America. He just needed to get away, far away. His frustrations were beginning to spill into other things. The old him would have never lost his temper, not like that. But they gave him no reason why, nor did it seem like they wanted too.
It's not their life. I can do whatever I want.
Still, something wasn't right. His parents were acting weird. Sighing, he closed his eyes as he laid back on his bed. I don't want to deal with this… Why can't I be happy like Miroku or Kagome? Still exhausted from the test, he was asleep shortly after hitting the pillow.
********************************************
“You have to be quiet, my brothers are sleeping and I don't want to wake them,” Sango said, leading him into her house.
“Oh, I assure you that you won't have to worry about me.”
“God, my parents are going to kill me having you over so late.” She guided him to her room through the dark house and moved inside as she gently closed the door behind them. Sighing, she moved past him and took a seat at her desk, leaving him standing there, eyeing his new surroundings. Looking over her shoulder, she frowned.
“What?”
“Oh, it's nothing. I just wasn't expecting your room to be so… plain.” There was a bed, her desk and a small TV on her dresser. Some old movie posters were against the wall for decorations, but other than that, there was nothing. It wasn't that she didn't want to decorate her room, it just wasn't that high a priority for her.
“You don't have to whisper. It may not look it, but my father built this house. Sound doesn't travel too far. Anyway, what were you expecting?”
“Honestly? Pink, lots and lots of pink; and maybe some stuffed animals to go with it. Guess I was wrong,” he said, speaking in his normal voice.
“That's not a surprise.”
“Yep, you are 100% not a girl.” She glared at him as he smiled. “But I'm glad though.”
“Glad?” Is he insulting me or something? She resisted the urge to get something to chuck at him.
“Yeah, this is the first time we have been alone together since Sunday. I was thinking it was going to be awkward or something.” She quickly looked away to hide her blush. God Miroku, you're such an idiot! She had tried to not think about that and now that he had mentioned it…
“Get out your notes. I'll ask you some questions of the important stuff I know will be on the test,” she said, trying to steer the conversation another direction. She began flipping through the notebook on her desk.
“I didn't come here to study.” She froze, not turning around. “I really think we need to talk about things.”
“So you lied about wanting to study for the test?”
“I think it's pretty much hopeless at this point. You would have never agreed to meet with me tonight otherwise.”
“So… what things are you referring too?”
“Our relationship.” She felt a tingle of fear run up her back.
“Well… I've been thinking a lot since then…”
Oh God… Please don't break up with me… Please don't… She suddenly felt extremely tired. She didn't know what she would do if he did. It wasn't the type of thing you shook off and continued with just being friends.
“And?” she asked when he trailed off; her voice firm.
“I…will wait.”
“Huh?” she said, turning around for the first time. He scratched the back of his neck, looking around.
“I mean… we don't have to rush it. I don't want to do anything you are against.”
“You mean that?”
“Of course I do.”
“You could be waiting a long time.” He looked uncomfortable at the thought.
“I—“ He sighed. “Yeah, but I will wait all the same.” Sango bit her lower lip. Once again, it felt like he was making large sacrifices for her sake. Just what have I done for him?
“I guess I can do some stuff with you…” she said softly, looking towards the floor as she blushed.
“Huh?” he asked, not catching what she said.
“I said I can do stuff for you!” she said, her face burning hotter. He blinked at her, tilting his head slightly.
“Uh… Okay cool, I guess…” He doesn't get it…
“Get a good grade on this test…”
He chuckled. “I seriously doubt I could. Haven't studied at all and I've been doodling in class.” She bit her lower lip.
“If you get a C, I'll return the favor from Sunday.”
“Return the favor?” His eyes widened. “You mean you would—”
“Ah! Don't say it!” she said, holding her hands over her ears, stomach turning anxiously. She didn't like the idea, but felt it was a necessary compromise. Besides, I doubt it will only be one way… She felt a little excited at the thought.
Rubbing his hands together, Miroku moved over to her. “Well? Let's hit the books!”
********************************************
Kagome knew that something had happened the night before, no doubt dealing with Inuyasha. When she had returned, there was a tense atmosphere in the house. It had been so uncomfortable; she had gone straight to her room and did some last minute studying for the history test. The morning was no better.
Inuyasha came down the stairs and went straight for the door, quickly putting his shoes on.
“Inuyasha wait! About last night—” He slammed the front door before their mom could finish.
“Don't worry about it. I'll sort it out,” her father said, not even looking up from behind the newspaper.
“What happened last night?” Kagome asked, thoroughly confused.
“It doesn't concern you.” Her fathers' voice was firm. It hurt to hear him say that. Inuyasha's my brother, of course it concerns me! Obviously, something big had happened. I'll ask Inuyasha about it later...
********************************************
“Ha! I think I actually did really well on that. All thanks to you my dear,” Miroku said, winking at Sango who instantly reddened.
“W-we still don't know for sure,” she sputtered, focusing on her lunch.
“I feel a little bad for Inuyasha though. He gave up on it right away,” Miroku said, opening his bread package. He had been eating the same food for lunch for awhile now. Kagome didn't know how he could eat the same thing over and over again. “All he did was circle a bunch of answers and turn it in. At least he will get the school record for fastest test.”
“Did something happen?” Sango asked, looking over at Kagome. Kagome shrugged. Something did happen, but she still had yet to get any details. It was obviously something bad if Inuyasha went so far to avoid their parents like he did this morning. She wanted to ask him about it, but it seemed he was avoiding them too. She didn't know who to be annoyed with, her parents for not telling he or Inuyasha for avoiding her as well. What did I do to deserve this treatment?
“He got in a fight with our parents or something.”
Miroku nodded sagely, half closing his eyes as he did it. He made a strange grunt sound. “Ah yes… he had finally entered in the rebellious phase of his life.” He made a sniffing sound. “My little boy is growing up!” Sango and Kagome stared at him. He gave them both a suspicious look. “What?”
Sango shook her head. Kagome only sighed. “I wish he would have picked a better time though. Our birthday is in two days. The last thing I want is a gloomy cloud hovering over the family during the celebration.”
“Speaking of the party, what's the plan?” Sango asked, focusing on Kagome.
“Anime marathon baby! We are going to drown ourselves in soda and other sugary goodies.”
“Yeah… so what are we really going to do?”
“Well, who said anything about you being invited? Sorry, but Inuyasha and I are going to have our own party. A better party. One that you aren't invited to.”
“I was just thinking of keeping it small. You two, Kikyo and Kouga come over after school some time and we just hang out, maybe go out and do something if we feel like it,” Kagome said, ignoring Miroku.
“So we are just going to improvise? Sounds okay to me; about what time do you want to call it a night?”
“Whenever is fine… I really don't mind.” It wasn't completely a lie. She did enjoy the thought of hanging out with her friends all night, but that didn't mean she forgot her promise to Kouga. She didn't want to spend all night with everyone.
“Oh? You and Kouga don't have anything special planned afterwards?” Kagome felt her face flush.
“Huh?” Miroku said, looking between the two.
“It's nothing,” Kagome said, trying to avoid answering the question. It wouldn't have mattered if Miroku knew about things it if she knew for certain Inuyasha wouldn't find out. “Speaking of which, where is Kikyo?” She was somewhat curious about where their other friend had wondered off too, but mostly, she wanted to steer the conversation in a different direction.
“Oh… I don't know,” Sango said as if suddenly realizing she was missing. It's really not that difficult to do… Kikyo had always been more of a silent presence in their small group.
“Didn't she say something about helping a teacher or something?” Miroku said before taking a bite of his bread.
It felt weird without Inuyasha here, joking around with Miroku. Without either Kikyo or Inuyasha, it was doubly so. Even if she didn't add much to the conversation, she still laughed with the group. Not that there is anything to laugh at. Kagome had noticed that there always seemed to be tension in the air, especially when Inuyasha was involved. Sure, everyone still joked around and put on a show of being carefree, but it seemed as though the true days of being untroubled were over. Everyone has their own worries now. Kagome felt lucky that she had seemingly been spared from the sudden troubles everyone around her were getting. Sango and Miroku had their problems, Inuyasha had several as well. Looking at her life, she was quite happy with where things were. She and her family were in good health, money wasn't a major concern, school was going well and she had a wonderful boyfriend who cared about her. The only thing that wasn't completely fine was Inuyasha, but he had seemed to make it a point as to not get her involved with whatever it was.
Just two more days until our birthday, I'm sure all the gifts will cheer him up a little. She knew he would love her gift. Shopping for him had always been easy. Being so close to him when they were growing up, there probably wasn't another person alive who knew him as well as she did. I can't believe how easily he shuts me out of everything.
She came back to reality, Miroku and Sango talking about something she didn't catch before. Just two more days… Things should start getting better after that…

Bah… my laptop is dead. I've had it eight years and one day, I get the Blue Screen of Death and *poof* it just stopped working. Since that was what I used to write, all my short stories I have written are gone. Luckily, I did manage to recover some of the important ones.
But, this means slower updates as I can only write on my desktop now and I spend four days of the week on campus. And I was saving for a spiffy new PS3 too. Nuts.
I ran into a couple writer blocks working on this chapter. Next couple should be easier as it will pick up some.
As always, thanks to everyone who took the time and wrote a review. It helps motivation. :)
Edit: Just some minor polishing here and there and got rid of some sentence fragments. The story isn't dead and I'm not inactive yet! I am working on chapter six and am a good way into it. Finals and work had me a little busier than I expected.
