Gift of the Moon
Chapter 2
A Little Friend

A young female reclined against a tree as she sat upon one of the highest branches. Her white hair, slightly tinted blue, flowed down her back and past her waist. Pointed elfish ears were decorated with a variety of piercings. Blues eye were closed, not in sleep, just in peace. She wore a knee length kimono; it was such a pale shade of blue, it looked white. It was trimmed with a ribbon in a much darker shade of blue. Dark blue boots that came up to her knees hid the rest of her legs. The woman loosely held a sword in her hands. The branches of the tree hid the harsh rays of the afternoon sun. However, a small ray escaped and shone on her closed left eye, where the marking of an outline of a blue heart was.

“Demon! Get it! Kill it!” Villagers chased after a small demon child. From her position in the tree, the woman could not see what kind of demon. She pushed herself over the branch and land on her feet, in between the villagers and demon child.

Blue eyes narrowed as she faced the human. “I don't practically enjoy my afternoon rest being interrupted.”

“Another demon,” the villagers screamed.

“And one that cab kill,” the female demon said as she prepared to draw her sword. The demon laughed for she had never seen humans run so fast. She turned and finally got a good look at the child. She had long silver hair and wore a very colorful child's kimono. She turned to leave. “Don't wander very close to humans till you can defend yourself.”

The child ran to catch up. “Wait, you're a dog demon, right? Where's your pack.”

“I left them long ago.”

“My name is Cho. I'm a butterfly demon,” the little girl said happily, her purple eyes shining from happiness.

“I can tell what you are from your name. It means butterfly. I was born Shirahime, but you can call me Neko.”

Cho's eyes got bigger. “Your real name means White Princess. Are you a princess?”

“No.”

“So you have people call you a name that means cat because you are not a princess, but you are really a dog,” Cho said, trying to understand the situation. “That's confusing.”

“You made it that way,” the older demon said with a shrug.

Cho smiled. “I'll call you Shirahime, if you don't mind.”

“I don't see why it matters what you call me because I'm never going to see you again,” Shirahime said. Cho stopped. After she had gone a few feet ahead, Shirahime stopped to feel how far her words must have cut the young demon girl. She turned back to see if she was still there. “Do you want to come with me?”

“Yeah!”

“Well come on then!” Shirahime said before turning back around. Cho ran to catch up and Shirahime set a pace that would not push Cho. “So why were those villagers chasing you?”

“This is a site where several butterfly demons nest. When a human destroys some eggs, we destroy the human. They decided to kill me off so as to show not to kill the song of the leader,” Cho explained.

“But you are not near mating age.”

Cho lowered her eyes. “I'm the daughter of the butterfly leader. We're not supposed to kill any human leaders. It's a deal they made hundred of years ago. I must die at their hands because the foolish human died at my sister's.”

Shirahime shook her head, but said nothing at all. They continued walking; most of the day was gone when another demon crossed their path. He was ugly. Big and purple, he was covered with horns and spikes and teeth and claws. “Are you the Changling?”

“Who wants to know?” Shirahime said, taking a step towards the demon to and drawing her sword.

The demon roared in triumph. “Master Naraku requests that you come to the castle to help him locate the Gift of the Moon.”

“Cho go someplace safe, but stay near by so we can get going as soon as kill this idiot,” Shirahime yelled as she pushed herself into an attack. The sword lodged itself into the demon's mouth. Shirahime pulled out her sword and the demon gagged before dropping dead.

“That was too cool!” Cho yelled as she ran hugged Shirahime around the legs. “What's the Gift of the Moon?”

“A sword not meant to be found,” Shirahime said as she tried to wiggle out of Cho's grasp.

“Then why does Naraku wants it?”

“He is a half demon determined to become a true demon. The Moon can change things, and he knows it,” Shirahime explained. She looked to the sun to see it had almost set. The minute it did, Shirahime's hair changed to a pitch black color. Clear blue eyes turned to blood red eyes. The blue marking around her left eye disappeared and was replaced by red markings in the shape of claw markings. Her kimono turned a blood red color as well and the trimming and boots turned black. “Since I'm a cat by night, he believes that I can find the Gift of the Moon.”

“How cool! Can I do that?” Cho asked when Shirahime's transformation into Neko was complete.

Neko shook out her long black hair. “No. My mother was a cat demon and my father a dog demon. As a result, I'm half of one and half of the other. By day dog and by night cat, that is my life. There is a legend that goes the one who is the daughter of the Sun and the Moon will be the one to receive their gifts. So
Here I am, constantly being pestered to find the Gift of the Moon.”

Neko started a large fire and sat down by it. Cho yawned and snuggled into Neko's warm body.

“How do you know the Gift of the Moon isn't something else?” Cho whispered as it became a fight to stay awake.

Neko sighed, holding onto Cho's small body. “Find the flower that blooms only when the moon is full. From it will come a sword only one can yield and live. Or so the legend said.”

Both soon fell asleep. A young demon lord watched as the two slept. “I found her.”
