Bankotsu sighed. Christmas was approaching and he didn’t know what to get Jakotsu for Christmas. He sighed once more and pressed his face to the cold glass of the window. Outside, snow drifted quietly onto the peaceful looking setting. Happy couples and school girls drifted amongst the snow, doing last minute Christmas shopping.

“Christmas is tomorrow,” Bankotsu groaned, still having not gotten anything for his boyfriend, Jakotsu.

They had been dating for a couple years and were extremely close. They lived together in a small, three room apartment. They each had prized possessions. Jakotsu had his cat, Yuki, and Bankotsu had his great grandfather’s katana. He cherished the sword and kept it on a floor stand in his bedroom, but he had always longed to buy this certain wall-hanger. It had twin dragons, crossing to hold the sword up. It was rather expensive and he could never afford it. His parents, in Tokyo, were paying for his college funds and refused to lend him money to pay for anything other than groceries and the bills. Luckily, Jakotsu, being older, helped out and bought him an occasional present or two.

The other day, the pair were shopping together in town and had stopped by the pet store to get more food for Yuki. Jakotsu loved that cat like it was his own child. So, anyway, Jakotsu stopped mid-step and stood staring at an extremely expensive leash and collar set. The leash was black and so was the collar, but the collar had an awesome design of diamonds. Bankotsu snuck a quick look at the price tag, winced and then followed Jakotsu out of the store.

“I wish I had money,” Bankotsu whined, looking around the house for anything he could sell to the man below them for some good cash. He searched the house for a good amount of time before giving up. Laying down on his own bed, he looked at the sword, sadly. Getting up, he stuck sheath and sword through a large belt loop on his jeans and made his way out of his apartment.

------------

Jakotsu hummed a little tune and happily carried the empty cat cage and large bag into the apartment. Bankotsu wasn’t home. Shrugging, he put the cat cage in the closet and wrapped the contents of the large bag. He ran his fingers over the ivory twin dragons before covering them with festive wrapping paper. He giggled, signed the card and put the three presents under the tree.

------------

It was late that night when Bankotsu got home. With him, he had a small plastic bag. He could hear Jakotsu tossing and turning on their bed and smiled slightly. Sitting down at their table, he wrapped the contents of his bag with gauze-y paper and stuck them in a bag, before throwing that under a tree as well. Crawling into Jakotsu’s bed, he hugged the older man and snuggled closer, falling into a deep sleep.

The next morning, Jakotsu bounced up out of bed and shook Bankotsu awake.

“BANKOTSU BANKOTSU! IT’S CHRISTMAS!!!” He giggled, as Bankotsu stuffed his head under the pillow and turned over. Picking Bankotsu up, with much difficulty, he carried him into the other room and began to unwrap various other presents from their friends.

From his parents, he got an interesting scarf, for the rest of the “Shichinin tai”, he got various little trinkets and many other things from his friends and relatives. Bankotsu watched Jakotsu open presents, until there were only a couple left under the tree. Bankotsu felt horrible. No one had bothered to get him anything. Sitting up, he sat down next to the giddy Jakotsu and handed him his present.

“Here, from me to you,” He smiled. Jakotsu handed him his preset and smiled. And together they opened their presents.

Bankotsu stared wide-eyed at the wall-hanger that he had his eye on for quite some time. Also there was sword cleaner, said to clean rust, and a brand new sheath. His eyes saddened even more.

Jakotsu had the same expression on his face as he looked at the collar, leash and tag for Yuki. Bankotsu looked around, wondering where the cat was.

“Jakotsu... I have something to say,” He spoke up, killing the strange silence.

“Me too, but you first.”

“I sold my great grandfather’s sword to buy you that..” He looked guiltily at the expensive presents on his lap. Jakotsu had tears in his eyes.

“I sold Yuki to buy you those!” He cried, putting the collar down next to him.

And so, both men had given their most prized possessions to buy each other gifts for what they sold.

The world is an ironic place, isn’t it?
