Gone with the Wind
Chapter 7

Addiction: the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.

Addiction, all though seemingly cut and dry when referenced in a dictionary, is a lot more complicated then most people realize.

You can become addicted to drugs, caffeine, alcohol, sex, sweets and sometimes even work. Hell, someday a person may actually become addicted to addictions, and eventually establish the strangest support group fathomable.

The problem with addictions, aside from the obvious pain and physical withdrawals the recovering person usually goes through, is the ends the addicted will go to feed their habits.

The addicted have been known to lie, murder, steal, and sometimes even offer their bodies in trade when attempting to feed the beast of their addiction.

Fortunately for Keiko she hadn't gotten to the point where murder and prostitution were really options she was considering; at least, not in a serious way. She had toyed with the idea of coaxing the great taiyoukai out of his clothes, and eventually free of the tiny white box she so desperately craved, but decided such things were pointless after the conversation they had shared earlier that day.

“Where's your wife?” She had asked in the hopes of affirming just how hard up her puppy companion was for…companionship. She had absolutely no intention of having sex with the great taiyoukai but decided a horny male could prove easier to manipulate. It was a weakness that most men shared, she realized, and if the great dog demon wasn't otherwise involved…perhaps she could put her feminine charms to work.

`Might as well.' She had scoffed internally at the time; noting she hadn't used them in so long that she might be out of practice.

A loud indignant snort had caused Keiko's brow to furrow as she attempted to decipher whether the snort meant he was single or been married more times then he cared to admit.

No.” Sesshoumaru had stated plainly as he rose from his place against an ancient tree and quickly went about rousing Jaken.

He hadn't really said as much, Keiko noted as she recalled the events and attempted to spin them into some semblance of truth, but she reasoned by his reaction that he felt the idea of marriage was completely absurd. This, of course, meant one of two things.

Either he was a complete and total stud and had so many women vying for his attention that the thought of settling down and having sex with just ONE was completely unacceptable.

OR, Keiko theorized as she let the more likely scenario roll around in her brain while she attempted to test its validity, he was so arrogant and so pompous that he had actually convinced himself women were a waste of time.

The latter of these two theories left the young woman with a disturbing and yet somehow not completely surprising realization.

Sesshoumaru was undeniably DEAD from the waist down.

It was sad she supposed, and a little more then a crying shame when she really stopped to think about it, which she did for most of that morning, but for now it was just another annoying obstacle between her and her cigarettes.

Keiko had been walking behind Sesshoumaru for the better part of the morning as they seemed to simply stroll about the forest for absolutely no reason. She had asked where they were going a couple of times, but each time was only offered silence in return. Her legs were sore, her throat was dry, and Kami help her, she was tired. But did that phase Mr. cranky pants?

No.

Keep moving.” He warned.

We are not stopping here.” He announced when she stopped to pull a rock free of her shoe.

Oh how she wished she would have just thrown that shoe at his head. She was certain his retaliation would have been painful and possibly life ending, but the sweet look of utter contempt in his eyes as he turned and realized she had accosted him with her shoe. OH it would almost be worth it. She could almost imagine herself, if she was lucky enough to get into nirvana after her life force was suddenly snuffed out by the angry dog, retelling the story to the angels that awaited her there while bursting into fits of laughter.

She supposed the thing that inevitably stopped her hand, or shoe in this case, was the fact that she still wouldn't have her cigarettes. Giving the bastard dog the satisfaction of knowing she would never be able to reclaim her stolen property was not something she would let happen.

Kami… she hated him.

Kami she needed a cigarette!

“We rest here.” Sesshoumaru stated matter-of-factly as he once again lowered himself against a large tree and seemingly stared into the void with a glazed over expression.

Keiko attempted to follow his gaze a couple of times as she tried to pinpoint what it was exactly that had him so captivated; only to becoming more infuriated and confused as she realized he was literally staring at nothing.

“Give me my cigarettes.” Keiko stomped as her nicotine craving body felt raw and agitated.

Give me my cigarettes.” She insisted as she extended her hand in emphasis and took a step closer to the unmoving youkai.

He didn't answer and for a moment she wondered if he actually slept with his eyes open. It would make sense, the young woman's tobacco starved brain reasoned. There was simply no way anyone could be this… boring!

`He must be sleeping.' The plotting female reiterated internally as she slowly lowered herself to the ground and calculated a plan of attack.

She knew he was strong and she knew he was fast. He had made that much obvious from the countless times he threw her about like a tiny figurine. She knew if she attempted to rip the cigarettes from his kimono blatantly he would be out of her reach before she even had a chance to blink. So the question, she supposed, was `what are his weaknesses, and how can I exploit them?'

`He only has one arm!' Keiko's frantically pulsing brain offered as the thought of puffing away on a nicotine saturated treat caused it to practically purr. `And he's sleeping!' It added illogically as it seemed more then willing to put the rest of her body in danger to satisfy its own needs.

The trick, she supposed, would be sneaking up on him. If he truly was sleeping, attempting to be quiet would only highlight the fact that something was different regarding her behavior. After all, any incidental sounds she made couldn't possibly be as loud as the frog demon and his child servant preparing dinner.

No, she decided, the best plan of attack would be to casually stroll over to him as if she had dropped something in the grass. The frog demon and child seemed to be caught up in their own business most of the time, and really only paid attention to the dog when he was speaking, so she assumed she wouldn't have to worry about them saying anything, as long as her body language remained casual.

`Yes.' Keiko's inner mind agreed as she slowly stood up again and casually strolled over in the unmoving dog demon's direction. `This could work!' It added enthusiastically as the woman made a point to scan the grass as if she had suddenly developed an interest in botany.

Sesshoumaru's gaze never faltered as he watched the strange woman, he had now come to know as Keiko, silently conniving with the frame of his peripheral vision. He knew from her scent that she was hatching something. He also knew whatever it was she was planning to do she was apprehensive about it. At first the great taiyoukai supposed she was contemplating bolting, remembering her propensity for running off when she felt she couldn't handle a situation, but then questioned his initial supposition as he noted the female was barely in enough shape to walk, let alone run; after exerting herself so much this morning.

The scent of her distress had been grating against his nerves all morning, and he made a point to push her extra hard in the hopes that her body would quickly grow accustom to this daily routine. After all, he had no idea how long they would share each other's company, and coddling her at this stage would only make the journey more difficult later on.

So if she wasn't planning on taking off, what was she planning?

Sesshoumaru fought the urge to narrow his eyes as he attempted to take in more of her scent. She was nervous, he noted as his keen nose quickly picked apart her emotions, but also …excited. Not in an elated or sexual way, the great dog demon deciphered, but in a type of reserved hopefulness. Whatever she was plotting she obviously felt it stood a good chance of succeeding.

`Her eyes are averted from her target.' Sesshoumaru noted as he watched the young woman slowly move in his direction while making a point to look everywhere but at him. It was a mistake many humans made when stalking their prey. It was a subtle and subconscious way of lying with one's eyes. How foolish humans were to suppose any creature would not know it was being hunted simply because it was not held in a predator's line of sight, the dog demon scoffed.

Sesshoumaru's body did not move an inch as he prepared it for whatever the young woman had in store for him. It might prove interesting, he decided, to see what a human of the future deemed a cunning plan of attack. He was certain, however she came at him, he would be able to defend himself enough that she would be incapable of causing him any serious injury. Maybe it was the teeniest bit arrogant to remain motionless when he knew he was about to be attacked, but the woman didn't even have a weapon.

Slowly Keiko released a stuttered breath as she stood a few inches to the side of the reclining dog demon and surreptitiously raised her hand as she casually attempted to make it appear she was only stretching.

Silently Sesshoumaru tracked the path of the young girl's arm as he noted the absurdity of her movements. Was she trying to be obvious? Was she attempting to be humorous?

With a measured intake of breath Keiko slowly bent at the knees as the very tip of her finger came in contact with the outer fold of the taiyoukai's kimono. Silently she moved it to the side as she continued to look down into the grass as if she was still somehow looking for a misplaced item and had NO idea what her right hand was up to.

Sesshoumaru fought the urge to roll his eyes as he noted humans of the future had apparently not gained any kind of strategic advantage over the years. This was the plan that caused her so much apprehension and optimism? How disappointing.

“Woman.” The great taiyoukai warned as he stopped trembling fingers from advancing, just shy of a laminated white box, by wrapping a clawed hand around her wrist.

`Dammit!' Keiko's mind cursed bitterly as it recalled the elated feeling of slick factory plastic slipping lightly against her fingertips. She had been so close!

“Give me my cigarettes!” The young woman ordered as she glared openly at the golden eyed god before her; not even flinching when he attempted to burn her with his gaze.

“No.” His thick masculine voice toned darkly as he seemingly dismissed her less then polite request.

`He only has one arm!' Keiko's mind reminded suddenly as it seemed determined to complete that which it had started.

“Give them!” The young woman snarled as she crossed her arms and sunk her free hand into the taiyoukai's kimono.

Sesshoumaru released a threatening growl as he tugged on the young woman's right arm effortlessly, causing her to stumble as she was unceremonious deposited into his lap.

For a brief awkward moment Keiko seemed to dart her large eyes around as she attempted to verify her position. The quick move had obviously caught her off guard, causing her to lay motionless in the great taiyoukai's lap as she came to grips with the fact that she wasn't dead and apparently uninjured.

Quickly, as if her movements would somehow break a spell that had placed upon her, the young woman squirmed as she once again, futility, attempted to gain access to the great youkai's kimono.

Sesshoumaru openly snorted as the flushed woman beneath him seemed far too determined to cause herself injury. He understood now that her original goal had been to retrieve the small box of poisonous herbs he had liberated off her the previous day, but he had no idea what was driving her to act in such an insane and reckless manner. Perhaps the herbs somehow balanced out her sanity? It was a possibility.

Still, the taiyoukai asserted as he stared down at the woman who now grunted with frustration as her feeble muscles did little against his own, at least her mental aberration made her more entertaining.

“I hate you!” Keiko growled as she seemed to catch her breath for a moment, feeling like a smile child being picked on by a bully.

“Hn?” The taiyoukai couldn't help but tease as he deftly moved his hand inside his own kimono and withdrew the slender box the woman beneath him practically salivated for. Typically he didn't exploit those he felt were mentally challenged, but she had started it, and he intended to teach her lesson.

“Please!” The young reincarnation whimpered as her eyes instantly locked on to the small object. “Just one.” She interjected as she reached out for the plastic covered container that seemed to reflect the light in an almost seductive way. She released a soft whimper as Sesshoumaru continued to hold the item of her affection just out of reach.

“If you want it,” The great taiyoukai stated as he insinuated such a thing was exceedingly easy, “then take it.”

“Stop,” Keiko growled as she attempted to lean upwards only to have the strong legs beneath her shift infinitesimally as they hindered any movement, “moving!” She grunted again as fell backwards once more and began to draw in thick heaving breaths.

Sesshoumaru fought the urge to smirk as the scent of the woman's frustration quickly overpowered his senses. He had never seen a woman like this before. In his long life he had seen them cower in fear, become livid with anger, and then weep with sorrow, but never had he experienced the strange sort of comfortable annoyancethis woman communicated. He supposed such a thing was to be expected considering human women were often justifiably terrified of him, and demon bitches were only interested in rutting or fighting. He supposed, it was a possibility, that humans of the future eventually came to terms with the fact that youkai were their superiors and simply view their deaths as inevitable. Perhaps the youkai/human relationship had evolved into something similar to that of a master and his pet? Such a thing would certainly explain why this female seemed blissfully ignorant to the real danger she was in. Or would be in, if he hadn't found her pathetic attempts so damn amusing.

The taiyoukai blinked his eyes as he attempted to clear the strange notions from his mind. What did it matter? He was teaching the woman a lesson. It was as simple as that. If he allowed the young woman to tire herself out she would be less inclined to attempt such things in the future. Strangely…Sesshoumaru found he was slightly disappointed at this admission.

“Why are you so mean?” Keiko squealed as she dug her fingers into the length of Sesshoumaru's kimono while she attempted to climb up the great taiyoukai's arm.

“Why are you so insistent?” The great dog demon teased as he struggled with the oddness of his own behavior. He hadn't engaged in such an act since he was a pup, and considering how long ago that was, he wasn't sure if it was a good idea to rekindle such a thing.

“Because…” The young reincarnation began as she slowly ascended the taiyoukai's extended limb, despite his attempts to shake her off, “they are…” She began, only to be cut off as the demon lord shifted his weight just as she was about to reach her prize.

A soft huff of frustration escaped her lips as she stared up at the taiyoukai who now knelt over her outstretched legs as he cautiously tucked the pack back into his kimono.

A thought occurred to Keiko as she stared at the dog demon's less then defensive posturing. Obviously he thought himself invincible and while she hated to admit it, after their little tussle, she would find it difficult to argue the point. Still, the young woman noted as she eyed the demon who seemed to stare at her in a calculating manner, he was a man. And men have weaknesses.

Quickly, as if hoping to catch the great taiyoukai off guard, Keiko raised her knee so that it rested against the dog demon's groin as her hands braced themselves on each of his knees. She wasn't exactly sure how hard she would have to kick to hurt a DEMON but, considering the effect such things had on human men, it was a good possibility her unspoken threat would hold some sort of power.

“I didn't want it to come to this,” Keiko warned as she noted she was once again getting a dirty look from the demon lord that towered over her, “but you've left me no choice.” She continued as she attempted to communicate the seriousness of their situation. “Give me my cigarettes or I swear to kami I'll…”

Sesshoumaru released a low and menacing growl as he noted the stakes of the game they had been playing had been raised considerably. Sure he could simply jump out of the woman's grasp. Sure he could simply end her miserable life and, if he was feeling charitable, bring her back with tensaiga. Hell, he could even break her legs afterwards to ensure she never contemplated such a dishonorable attack against his person again.

But she was a pathetic human, Sesshoumaru noted as he lowered himself to he ground in front of her and scowled at her for all he was worth, and he would not be intimidated.

“Do so and parish.” The demon lord warned darkly as he leaned close enough that he could feel the young woman's obviously labored breath against his face. His eyes flashed red momentarily as he glared at the young woman who dared threaten his person.

“Is that what happened to Kagura?” Keiko questioned angrily as she matched the dog demon's glare unfalteringly. She wasn't sure why she asked the question in the first place, and as she realized she had just said the name out loud an uneasiness settled into her stomach. “Did she die trying to free herself of you?” The young woman added in a softer tone as she realized that her present day reality and apparent past life may not be that dissimilar.

“No.” The dog demon answered back flatly as he moved his eyes over the human woman's face. The odd feeling speaking of Kagura's death always seemed to cause tightened within the demon lord's chest as he continued to drink in her features with his eyes. Her face was so familiar and yet…

Sesshoumaru's groin began to ache as the gentle pressure the young woman's knee applied, mixed with their current position, began to stir unbidden desires he thought he had discarded long ago.

Was it the memory of Kagura that was calling out to his demon?

Surely it couldn't be a reaction to the pathetic human girl who now looked at him with a mild amount of confusion.

`W-what are you doing?' Keiko's mind questioned frantically as Sesshoumaru's lips seemed to move closer and closer to her own. Where in her intricately woven plan had she added Kiss Sesshoumaru? She hadn't! At least, she was pretty sure she hadn't. Wait, wasn't he supposed to be dead from the waist down?

“Sesshoumaru-sama!” Jaken squawked loudly causing the demon lord to hesitate mere inches from Kieko's lips as his half lidded gaze morphed into a hardened, cold mask. Soundlessly, and without moving the rest of his body, he turned to acknowledge his often annoying attaché.

Jaken's eyebrow seemed to twitch uncontrollably as Rin simply giggled into the hands she pressed firmly against her mouth.

“What are you doing Sesshoumaru-sama?” The toad demon questioned in disbelief as his eyebrow continued its distressful rhythm.

“Being a jerk.” Keiko finally answered, falteringly slightly as she attempted to diffuse the awkward moment with a bit of what she considered normality. Quickly she released her hold on his body as she lowered her leg and slipped out from under Sesshoumaru; using the side of his body that lacked an arm as her escape route.

`Was he really going to kiss me?' The young girl pondered as she attempted to put some distance between them. `Was I going to kiss him?' Keiko's inner voice muttered as suddenly cigarettes were the furthest thing from her mind.

While she had kissed a few men in her time, she had ALWAYS been the one to initiate it and therefore always been the dominant one in the relationship. That was partly the reason her relationships never moved beyond kissing. She simply wasn't attracted to a man who expected her to initiate everything, and men that typically sought control in the relationship simply couldn't handle her.

But this, Keiko realized trepidatiously, had been something all together different. This had been frightening and exciting all at once.

This, Keiko noted as she glanced in the demon lord's direction and found him reclining against a tree again as he stared at her intently, was something couldn't let happen again.

After all, this man, demon, or whatever had kidnapped her.

“What was I thinking?” Keiko mumbled softly as she turned away from the dog demon to lightly trail a finger over her trembling lips.

She didn't belong here and she had known this man for less then a day! They had barely spoken to each other and she was…..going to kiss him?!

Even she had better sense then that.

`Well,' Keiko's inner voice noted, `Typically.'

~0~0~0~0~0~0~0~

Kagome grumbled loudly as she rummaged through her bag in aggravation.

“Inu Yasha,” The young miko called as she dumped the contents of her bag out on the forest floor with an annoyed sigh. “Have you seen my lotion?” She questioned ostensibly as she hoped the real question hidden behind her words; `Have you been in my bag?' would somehow remain concealed.

“W-why would I have seen it?” The hanyou retorted suspiciously as he seemed a little more agitated then usual.

“I can't find it.” Kagome huffed as the strange tone in her puppy friend's voice seemed to go unnoticed. “I can't find my book either.” She huffed as she stared at the cluttered mess that was once the contents of her bag.

“Well if you didn't pack so much damn junk…” Inu Yasha began as he attempted to breathe life into an old and tired fight.

“I told you…I NEED this stuff.” The young miko corrected.

“Keh!” Inu Yasha snorted as he seemed to look off into the distance indifferently but glanced at the kneeling girl through the corner of his eyes.

“Oh kami… what if I dropped it?!” Kagome exclaimed as her mind spun with the repercussions of introducing lotion and slightly naughty novels to a primitive Japan swam through her brain.

Inu Yasha's jaw practically popped as he ground his teeth together in agitation. He hated to suggest such a thing, but if it kept Kagome from going on and on about the destruction of the timeline thing…then he supposed he'd make this small sacrifice.

“We'll retrace our path tomorrow.” He offered up begrudgingly; his ears flattening against his head as Kagome began to squeal with happiness.

“Maybe I could even take a quick trip home?” Kagome questioned with enormous hopeful eyes.

“Now wait just a minute!” Inu Yasha barked.

“Thank you Inu Yasha!” The young miko squealed as she seemed to translate his response in the affirmative and began to throw her things back into her pack.

Inu Yasha grumbled as he watched Kagome pack with enthusiasm. One thing was for certain, the puppy-eared boy conceded, he was going to have to fix that stupid book…and fast.
