Gone With the Wind
Chapter 21
A familiar flash of purple light illuminated the ancient bone-eater's well clearing.
“Well we're back in the past!” Kagome yelled, obviously raising her voice in the hopes of alerting any overly amorous couples nearby.
Inu Yasha and Kagome had given Sesshoumaru and Keiko a couple hours, deciding they could use the time to get dressed and clean up, before going back to retrieve the affectionate pair they had left in the past.
They had only intended to be gone, at the most, one hour, but after carefully sneaking in her bedroom window, quickly throwing on a fresh set of clothing, and hurrying down the stairs, only to find a note pinned to the fridge, Kagome soon realized they had the house to themselves; something Inu Yasha referred to as a “Gift from Kami.”
When Kagome turned to him, wondering dimly why he was suddenly so glad to be rid of her family, he delivered his answer in the form of a searing kiss.
Who was Kagome to turn down such a gift?
“They ain't here.” Inu Yasha grunted as he tentatively sniffed at the air, slightly repulsed by the lingering odor of arousal, but easily abating his displeasure as he propped his chin atop Kagome's head while letting her scent calm him.
“Where could they have gone?” Kagome questioned in a more subdued tone.
“Who cares.” Inu Yasha woofed softly as his hands began to roam from her waist to the pert breasts just above. He still hadn't gotten the opportunity to mark her, and it was irritating to say the least. Maybe it would have been easier to mark her if he hadn't explained the whole process when they were in the shower together?
The corner of Inu Yasha's lip twitched as he suddenly understood why so many people in Kagome's time enjoyed showers.
“Duh…I do.” Kagome quipped, lightly batting his hand away as she slowly sauntered over to the edge of the well to climb out. “Keiko doesn't belong here,” She explained as she tested her footing, “we can't just leave her five hundred years in the past if we aren't sure that's what she really wants.”
A strong arm wrapped around Kagome's waist as Inu Yasha pulled her against his body before bounding effortlessly out of the well.
“Is that why you won't let me….mark you?” He questioned in a down-trodden voice. “Because you think you don't belong here?” His ears drooped.
Kagome groaned as they repeated the same conversation they shared only an hour earlier. “I told you Inu Yasha...if we were sure the well kept working,” She silently hoped her words would sink in easier now that they were both fully clothed, “I would marry…er mate you in a heart beat…but.”
“You don't have to use that as an excuse.” Inu Yasha snapped bitterly, unable to shake the feeling that Kagome was `just being nice' and in actuality didn't want to be his mate for the same reason every other female didn't want to be his mate….he was a hanyou.
“Inu Yasha!” Kagome cut him off as she reeled on him with an almost angry expression. She knew his self-esteem was low, but surely what they did in the well-house….her bedroom….the shower….and sweet kami the lawn …should have helped put some of these latent fears to rest. “I told you!” She expressed hotly. “I can't just start a family here. The well may not work once the jewel is purified, and I couldn't live with myself if I accidentally abandoned a child five hundred years in the past.”
Inu Yasha argumentative expression melted as fear and sadness overtook him.
“What if I accidentally purified the jewel?” Kagome whispered distractedly as she fingered the bobble around her neck and sighed.
“Don't say shit like that!” Inu Yasha barked as he suddenly grabbed her wrist to pull her hand away from the tiny stone.
“It could happen,” Kagome pointed out with a shrug, “I'm just trying to stay realistic.”
“The fuck it will!” Inu Yasha argued obtusely as, in a rare show of feelings-without-thought, he grasped the tiny jewel in his free hand, snapping it from its chain, before lowering himself down on his haunches to dig a hole in the earth.
Kagome groaned; he was obviously panicking.
“You know that isn't going to solve anything.” Kagome attempted to reason, “It's still going to attract youkai,” she offered logically, “and I'm sure they won't have any trouble digging it up.”
“You're right.” Inu Yasha huffed, slumping his shoulders as he glared at the disgusting pink ball of light that threatened to take the only good thing that ever happened to him away.
For a brief moment Kagome thought she had talked some sense into the obviously agitated hanyou.
Sadly she was mistaken.
After Inu Yasha decided burying the jewel truly wasn't enough, and with emotion still clouding his better judgment, he pulled a transformed tetsaiga from his hip as he prepared to blast the innocent jewel into the next world.
“Oswarii.” Kagome practically deadpanned, her brain still refusing to believe Inu Yasha was capable of doing something so stupid. “We finally finished collecting shards from when I accidentally shot the jewel, and now you want to shatter it again?” She argued more then questioned. “Honestly Inu Yasha,” she huffed the last bit in a motherly tone, “What has gotten into you?”
A dark, amused voice drifted across the clearing as Sesshoumaru emerged from the forest carrying a rather disheveled and unconscious Keiko in his arm. “Perhaps the more appropriate question,” the taiyoukai mused as if he was totally oblivious to the slumbering female he held, “is what has gotten into you,” his eyebrow arched, “or perhaps whom.”
Kagome blushed. It seemed Sesshoumaru was completely aware what had detained them, and from the looks of Keiko, they hadn't exactly been inactive themselves.
Inu Yasha growled as the spell that held him to the ground slowly released him, so he could stand in front of his soon-to-be mate protectively.
“Not now Sesshoumaru,” Keiko muttered into the demon lord's neck, her unconscious mind mislabeling the growl, as she continued to sleep, “I'm tired.” She complained.
Silence resonated through the clearing as the young woman's unconscious declaration apparently left everyone uncomfortable.
Kagome cleared her throat, realizing she would probably have to break the silence, since neither dog demon seemed particularly skilled in the speaking department. “Have you tried passing through the well?” She questioned knowingly, hoping to change the topic that apparently rendered the brother's speechless.
“No.” Sesshoumaru answered simply, eyeing the well with a moderate amount of disdain.
“Don't you think you should?” Kagome urged, realizing the taiyoukai's misgivings, but knowing from experience just how dangerous it could be if her suggestion sounded anything like an order.
“Very well.” Sesshoumaru agreed in a bored tone, easily leaping into the well with his passenger firmly tucked to his side, as he landed on the bottom and waited to be engulfed by a strange purple light.
“Hn.” He stated simply as he calmly expressed his displeasure over being rejected by the ancient time portal.
“Apparently the well has better taste then I thought.” Inu Yasha quipped in amusement, earning a glare from both the taiyoukai and Kagome once again.
“Maybe we should let Keiko try it.” Kagome suggested consoling. She knew, or at least assumed, from the possessiveness the demon lord occasionally demonstrated that it wouldn't be easy to convince him to let her go. If she was going to make this work, Kagome realized, she really needed a conscious Keiko to help sway the great dog.
“Um…could you wake her up?” Kagome questioned timidly.
Sesshoumaru's eyes narrowed as he noted her `question' sounded suspiciously like an order. “I could.” He offered before jumping from the well; his grip on Keiko tightening.
Kagome grimaced at the glare the demon lord shot in her direction. He was making it a little too obvious that she probably didn't phrase her last request to his liking. Maybe she should try again?
“Don't you think we should wake her up and see if it works?” She tried again.
“No.” Sesshoumaru's eyes narrowed again as he seemed to catch on to her game.
Now it was Kagome's turn to be aggravated. “You can't just…..keep her….like she's a …a…..dog.” She spat before thinking of a better analogy.
“You are in no position to be giving this Sesshoumaru orders.” The demon lord pointed out.
“I'm not giving you orders!” Kagome fumed. “I'm just keeping Keiko's best interests in mind!”
“She is not your concern.” Sesshoumaru growled, once again disturbed by the way this human, who was obviously not a relation, continued to claim responsibility for his recently-acquired-mate.
“She doesn't belong...” Kagome began, only to be cut off as Keiko reluctantly entered the conversation with a groan.
“Just throw me in,” Keiko huffed groggily, “maybe it will be quieter on the other side.” She quipped.
Sesshoumaru claws tensed against her leg and she reluctantly opened her eyes.
“It was a joke…” Keiko drawled out in exhaustion. “Don't worry,” she offered with a weak smile, “if it lets me through you should know I'll come back.” She puntuctated her admission by lightly stroking one of the stripes on his face, causing his chest to rumble in pleasure, as he nodded once before carefully lowering her to the ground
Keiko blushed softly as she hobbled to the well on unsure legs.
Kagome instantly recognized the woman's plight and, while suppressing the deviant images of what Sesshoumaru had to do to make her walk so awkwardly aside, propped herself against the young woman for support.
“Ready?” Kagome questioned as they stood on the edge of the ancient well lip.
“Ready.” Keiko sighed as she shot Sesshoumaru one last long glance, just in case.
“Here…we …go.” Kagome grunted as she pushed off the ground and sent them both to the bottom of the well, feet first.
A shaft of ominous purple light filled the sky once more as the ancient well graciously accepted its miko mistress and allowed her to pass through to the future. Kagome was gone almost instantly leaving Keiko's crumpled form slumped against the unforgiving well bottom as a single syllable expression tumbled easily from her lips.
“Ow.” Keiko deadpanned as she once again wondered just how many things in the time would be so painful. “Again.” She added pitifully.
“It seems to be rejecting you.” Sesshoumaru pointed out in an even tone as he fought to cover his happiness over this recent revelation.
“I ….guess….so.” Keiko agreed in disbelief. She realized that it was always a possibility that the well would reject her but …she never really thought about the consequences before. It didn't really make sense. Why would the well let her travel back in time but stop her from traveling forward?
“Ow.” Keiko complained again as a sharp pain suddenly drew her hand to the crook of her neck. She realized, vaguely, the location had been where the taiyoukai had bit her previously, but the wound had healed, why was it hurting again?
Sesshoumaru's nose twitched as the scent of Keiko's blood suddenly accosted his senses.
Inu Yasha seemed to pick up the scent as well, but before he could say anything, the elder youkai had launched himself into the well to inspect the young woman for injuries.
“Where are you injured?” The taiyoukai demanded in a somewhat reserved tone, easily lifting the young woman to her feet as his eyes roamed over her kimono clad body.
Keiko extended her hand, hoping to reassure the great taiyoukai she was unharmed, only to blink as it came back smeared with blood.
Sesshoumaru hastily hooked her chin with his clawed fingers as he turned her head to the side to get a better look. As he suspected, her mark was bleeding, and not due to her fall.
Without speaking another word the taiyoukai scooped the young woman up in his arm as he easily leapt from the depths of the well before depositing them gracefully against the nearby earth.
“What is it?” Keiko questioned, a little concerned she couldn't inspect the injury herself.
“It would appear the well recognizes my claim upon you,” Sesshoumaru explained, “and will not let you pass because of it.” He finished in a flat tone as he braced himself internally for the bout of obscenities he assumed was sure to follow. Having the well not except her, he realized, would be devastating enough, but having the well not accept her because she belong to him could…..potentially….
“Oh well.” Keiko shrugged, not looking devastated in the slightest. She noticed the strange glint of surprise in the demon lord's eyes and decided to elaborate. “It's not like I have family or friends I'm really close to…you know.” She felt slightly pathetic for admitting such a thing so casually. “But….if Kagome can get back,” she pondered out loud, “then maybe she can just pick up a couple things for me…”
As if on queue a purple shaft of light once again illuminated the area, shortly followed by Kagome's questioning voice, “It didn't work?” She questioned.
Inu Yasha extended a hand down into the well and easily helped Kagome out.
“No.” Keiko responded casually, not really sure how she should react to this new bit of information. “I guess it's decided I belong here.” She stipulated as the demon lord beside her wrapped an arm around her waist, silently agreeing.
Inu Yasha made a quieted gagging noise at his brother's apparently spiking scent which both females tentatively ignored.
“Would it be possible,” Keiko requested as she nibbled her lip while contemplating her future, “I mean…if I gave you a list of things to bring back….”
“Of course!” Kagome responded cheerfully, more then willing to help the woman who was now currently living out one of her worst fears. (Being separated from the future) “Whatever you need,” She added helpfully, “All though you might have to wait until tomorrow,” she explained, “my family won't be back until late tonight, when all the stores are closed, and if I'm shopping for that much stuff I'd probably need mom's car.”
Inu Yasha's ears perked up and swiveled in Kagome's direction.
“That's fine.” Keiko agreed in a thoughtful tone, running the tips of her fingernails over the demon lord's back as she marveled at the way his muscles twitched under the rough caress. “I still have to figure out how I'm going to support myself and where I'm going to live but-“
“You will not leave my side.” The taiyoukai argued, earning a look of confusion from the female beside him.
“Huh?” Keiko questioned dimly. Was he asking her move in with him? Did he even have a place of his own? Why was he looking at her like that?
“We should probably get on it then.” Inu Yasha seemed to announce out of no where, his words making absolutely no sense, as he scooped a slightly surprised miko up in his arms before disappearing through the ancient time portal again.
Keiko's eyebrow twitched at the hanyou's rapid departure. “Well that was kind of rude.” She remarked to no one in particular.
“Hn.” The demon lord agreed in a distracted tone.
Keiko's eyes swiveled from Sesshoumaru to the well and back again. “Wait…didn't she just say she was going to wait until tomorrow to get supplies….why the fuck did he just take off like that?”
A lecherous grin once again curled the edges of the demon lord's taut lips as he hastily flung the enchanting young woman before him over his shoulder.
“Hey!” Keiko protested, an odd sense of deja-vu washing over her, “What the fuck are you doing?”
The taiyoukai's chest rumbled as he once again found her choice of words interesting.
Keiko eeped, her protests drifting away on the breeze, as a pair of sharp fangs gently nibbled on the tender flesh of her exposed thigh; the fabric scandalously pooling on top of the demon lord's arm.
Without so much as uttering another word Sesshoumaru launched them into the air as he decided finding a secluded location would be quite beneficial for what he had planned.
Keiko screwed her eyes shut as the ground beneath them suddenly became a blur, their hair tangling together behind them, as they disappeared over the horizon.
Gone with the wind.
The end!
