Chapter 6

Inuyasha halted his run at the base of a mountain and looked up at it. Sesshomaru came to a halt next to him, gliding gracefully to a stop, his hair swishing behind him. Inuyasha scented the air deeply and sneezed at the prominent smell of wolf coming down from the mountain.

“He's here,” Inuyasha growled as he headed towards the mountain.

“Do not be too reckless, little brother for surely you did not forget that the wolf still possesses two jewel shards?” Sesshomaru spoke as he hurried gracefully next to his brother.

“You think I'd forget?” Inuyasha growled, dodging trees and boulders as he scaled the mountain. “I'm not going to put Kagome or my pup in danger nor am I going to die and leave them to live the life my mother and I lived.”

“Your mate is breeding?” Sesshomaru asked in a mildly surprised voice. “Surely you weren't thinking to not inform this Sesshomaru of this fact.”

“Keh, course not. Just didn't occur to me that you didn't know.”

Sesshomaru took a deep breath as they neared a large cave opening. The scent of wolf was strong as was the scent of a frightened breeding female.

“Kagome,” Inuyasha whispered as his eyes slowly bled red and royal blue stripes slowly fading in on his cheeks.

“Control yourself, brother,” Sesshomaru growled, his own control slipping at the scent of a frightened pack female.

“I'm trying,” Inuyasha growled in reply.

Kagome gasped and her head shot up as she felt a familiar tingle shoot down her spine. “Inuyasha,” she whispered as his demon energy brushed against her spiritual aura. She unclasped her arms from around her drawn up knees and slowly stood from her spot on the cold stone ground to walk to her barrier.

As she expected, Kouga sauntered into her cave with a torch, a scowl on his face. “You won't live through this, Kouga. Not this time,” she whispered to him.

“We'll see about that, woman,” Kouga growled.

Kagome sighed. A beating would be good for the wolf. Maybe it would knock some sense into his disillusioned brain. `I'm going to have to save him from Inuyasha against, aren't I?' Kagome mentally groaned.

----------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------

Inuyasha halted as the smell of wolf grew stronger. He growled menacingly, clutching the hilt of Tetsusaiga. “Where's my mate you mangy wolf?!”

“She's my woman you filthy cur! I staked a claim on her in front of witnesses! Not you!” Kouga yelled.

“Actually, wolf, Inuyasha did in fact stake a claim on the priestess when this Sesshomaru first met her,” Sesshomaru spoke up from Inuyasha's side.

“I don't care!” Kouga yelled emphatically. “She's been my woman for the past three years! Not yours!” With that, Kouga launched himself at Inuyasha. Inuyasha side stepped him and drew Tetsusaiga.

“She ain't yours wolf!” Inuyasha yelled back, launching himself at Kouga and swinging his sword.

Sesshomaru looked away from the fighting duo and towards the cave. He glided unnoticed into the cave and followed the priestess's scent. He came across the wolf's two lackeys and stopped.

“Do you wish to hinder this Sesshomaru in retrieving the priestess?” he questioned the two in a monotone.

The two quickly held up their hands and shook their heads. “No! Kouga is being stupid! Sure, we like sister Kagome, but she's already claimed and is pupped. Besides, she's still got her spiritual powers, even after being with Inuyasha.”

Sesshomaru nodded and continued on his way, soon coming to a dimly lit room taken up mostly by a priestess barrier.

“Sesshomaru?” Kagome questioned, surprised that her brother-in-law was there in front of her.

“Are you well, priestess?” he asked, eyeing the barrier.

“Relatively,” Kagome answered. “Is Inuyasha alright?”

“He is sane enough and is engaging the wolf in combat as we speak.”

“Well, then, we'd better get going and make sure that they don't kill each other.” She dropped her barrier and walked to Sesshomaru. They proceeded to walk form the small cave she'd been in and moved towards the entrance. Kagome gasped and stopped in her tracks, causing Sesshomaru to stop as well and look back at her.

“What is the matter?” the western lord asked as he watched her press her hands into her slightly rounded stomach. Kagome didn't answer verbally, but instead grabbed his only remaining hand and placed it on her stomach, right over her belly button. “What do you—” he stopped when he felt it: a slight bump against her stomach.

“My pup is moving!” she cheered, a brilliant smile blooming on her face.

“Indeed. Your pup is destined to be strong,” Sesshomaru murmured, looking down at his hand, inwardly awed that this woman, this priestess, was not terrified of having his poisonous claws near her breeding belly. “Your pup will be strong, just as you and my brother are.”

Kagome flashed him a bright smile and sighed, patting his hands before dropping hers to her side. “Thank you. Now let's go save Kouga from Inuyasha's wrath,” Kagome said, much more cheerful than she had been previously.

They quickly exited the cave and came upon the scene of a bloody and bruised Inuyasha and Kouga. Both were panting, but Inuyasha appeared to be in a better condition than the wolf he was battling.

“Give it up wolf! Kagome ain't yours!” Inuyasha growled, his Tetsusaiga having long been imbedded into one of the surrounding trees. He cracked his knuckles as he glared at the beaten and battered wolf.

“Like shit, cur,” Kouga growled and spit blood onto the ground in front of his kneeling form.

“Kouga, how many times to I have to tell you that I'm not yours!” Kagome yelled, catching the attention of the fighting two.

“But…Kagome,” Kouga whispered, looking towards her with saddened eyes, “you are mine not his! He only ever hurt you…how can you willingly be his matee?”

“Kouga, you can't help who you love. I love him,” she told him, walking towards him and ignoring her mate and brother-in-law's warning growls. “And I know for a fact that you don't love me. Go find Ayame. She'll be a much better mate to you than I ever could.” She touched his head with the tips of her fingers. “I really am sorry, but there's nothing to be done about it.”

Kouga looked up at her and sighed, his shoulders sagging. “No, I suppose not. I was just too thick to see it before,” he murmured.

“Get better soon Kouga, for I would still love to be friends,” Kagome smiled.

Kouga smiled as well and slowly stood. “Ginta! Hakkaku! We're leaving!” he yelled towards the cave.

“Oh! One more thing! Can I please have your shards? We only have a couple more left to collect and we'd like to do it soon,” Kagome implored, her hands clasped before her.

Kouga sighed and leaned down to slice the shards out of his calves. He handed them over to her and said with a sigh, “I knew that this day would come someday.” Ginta and Hakkaku rushed out of the cave and the three wolves took off.

Inuyasha quickly approached his mate and engulfed her in a hug. “Are you alright, Kagome?” he asked as he sniffed at her neck, searching for anything out of the ordinary.

Kagome smiled up at him. “Better than alright!” she said. She moved one of his hands from her back to her stomach. “I can feel our pup!”

Inuyasha gazed down at his hand in wonderment. He could feel his pup moving from within his mate! Inuyasha dropped to his knees and pressed the side of his face against his mate's stomach. He wrapped his arms around her waist and listened contentedly to his pup and mate's heartbeats; the calm deep one of Kagome and the high fast one of his pup.

He grinned and stood, still holding onto his mate as he looked towards his brother. “Thank you for accompanying me, Sesshomaru. I don't think I would have been able to stay sane otherwise,” he said sincerely.

“This Sesshomaru does not require your thanks,” Sesshomaru told him. “Though, it would do you well to inform this Sesshomaru of the next time your mate is pupped. He also expects to be informed of when she whelps.” And with that, the enigma that is Sesshomaru glided off into the mountain forest and disappeared.

“Let's go home,” Kagome said, looking up at her mate. “I bet that Shippou is worried sick about us.” Inuyasha nodded, leaned down to give his mate a relieved, but chaste, kiss before picking his mate up and bounding off towards their home.

“I hope that they're alright,” Sango murmured as she cradled a sleeping little fox demon to her chest. Shippou had finally fallen asleep after crying his eyes out for hours at the disappearance of Kagome and Inuyasha.

“I'm sure that they are. Inuyasha wouldn't allow anything to happen to his mate or pup,” Miroku told her from where he sat next to her in Inuyasha and Kagome's front room.

“They've just been gone for so long,” she mumbled as she glanced down at the fox demon held in her arms. Shippou shifted and sniffled, blinking his eyes and looking around as his little nose twitching as he scented the air. “Are you alright, Shippou? You didn't sleep for very long.”

He ignored her in favor of turning towards the front sliding doors. His eyes grew wide and tears gathered in the corner of his eyes again. “They're back,” he mumbled airily, shock leaking into his voice. He jumped out of Sango's grasp and threw the doors open.

A few feet from the door, walking along the path to them, were Inuyasha and Kagome, who was still held against her half demon's chest. The tears started to flow down Shippou's face. “Mama!!” he cried, launching himself down the couple steps and up at Kagome. “Mama, mama, mama!” He buried his face in her chest and clutched her shirt, soaking it with his tears as he continually mumbled.

Kagome's eyes widened at the term that Shippou was mumbling. She got over her shock, relaxed and smiled down at the little boy. “It's alright, Shippou, Mama's here. Don't cry, baby,” she told him in a soothing voice, running one hand through his pony tail and rubbing his back in a soothing circular motion with the other.

Inuyasha stared down at his mate and the little fox demon that he held in his arms. He smiled slightly at the daydream of Kagome soothing a silver haired child and holding her against her chest just as she was doing with the kit. He walked in to the house, past a shocked Sango and Miroku, and sat on a cushion in the front room with Kagome in his lap and Shippou cradled against her chest.

Sango and Miroku broke out of their shock and shifted on their cushions, looking between the (again) sleeping fox demon and the couple. Sango shook herself mentally and asked, “Are you guys alright? What happened to Kouga?”

“We're alright and Kouga is still alive. Wounded, but alive,” Kagome said as she absent mindedly ran her fingers through Shippou's ponytail. “I had no idea that he thought of me like that,” she murmured.

“You've always taken care of him, so I guess that it's only natural,” Sango commented. “But more importantly, you and the pup are alright, right?”

Kagome smiled and nodded enthusiastically. “More than alright! I felt its first kick!”

“Really?! That's so exciting!” Sango squealed quietly.

“I can't wait to tell Mama,” Kagome said. She looked down at the child that was sleeping against her chest and clutching her shirt. “But that won't be for a while because I want to make sure that Shippou is alright.”

“A wise idea as he was very worried for you both,” Miroku spoke.

“He won't have to worry about any of us leaving him,” Inuyasha said with conviction, looking down at what he now saw as his first son. Kagome smiled up at him before relaxing back against him and closing her eyes, happy to be safe and home with her mate and son.

And please don't tell me that you felt that this chapter was anti-climactic. I know this already and do not wish to be informed of it over and over again.
