Chapter 4: An Ally
“You can't catch me!”
“Betcha I can!”
The angel was gliding after a very hyper, silver haired half demon, which was currently running and jumping for all he was worth, all over a hot, and dusty playground. Laughing he ducked under a small girl swinging from the monkey bars and jumped over two boys building a sand castle. He laughed, then skid to a halt as he realized on entering the grass on the field by the sand box, that his friend was no longer chasing him.
White furry puppy ears drooping slightly he started to call out to her. “Kagome! Where'd you go?” Big golden eyes filled with worry and sadness. As he searched the bit of playground he just covered.
“Tag you're it Inuyasha!!” The raven haired angel laughed as she appeared behind the hanyou and tapped his shoulder playfully.
“That's not fair!” The little half demon's eyes became fiery as he crossed his arms in front of him in his favorite pose. The seven year old would have been a very intimidating sight, if it hadn't been for the fact that he was pouting and the tip of one ear was flopped forward.
Kagome was doing her best not to laugh, when she looked over Inuyasha's shoulder and saw a little boy staring at Inuyasha. The boy had scruffy, midnight black, hair that was tied into a small ponytail at the nape of his neck. His blue, almost violet eyes were staring intently at the little half demon boy. Seeing that Kagome was no longer paying attention to his silent tantrum, Inuyasha turned around to see what had distracted her.
“Oi! You with the Ninja Turtles shirt! What are you looking at?” Inuyasha called out trying to be tough, but his curiosity won the fight before it started as he walked toward the boy.
The boy smiled then at the half demon boy. “Who were you talking to? I don't see anybody.” The boy looked around the little half demon to see if he was hiding anyone in back of him.
Inuyasha cocked his head to the side, wondering if he should tell the boy his special secret. Most of his experiences with telling people about Kagome have led to arguments, fights, detentions and suspensions. The little hanyou boy all ready had quite a file despite only barely having started the second grade. With a sigh, Inuyasha decided to try one last time. “Can you keep a secret?” Inuyasha asked in a loud whisper.
Kagome, who was near by, shook her head in amusement. `When will boys ever learn to whisper quietly?' She wondered to herself as a smile spread across her lips.
The black haired boy put a few fingers to his chin considering the question as Inuyasha tapped his foot, impatiently waiting for the answer. Inuyasha sighed at the very serious looking boy in front of him. “Well??” Inuyasha blurted out, as his patience was starting to give way.
After a moment or two more of apparently deep thought the boy put a fist to his mouth and cleared his throat in an almost adult manner. “Maybe… I usually keep secrets for my friends. But you see, I don't have very many friends. So if you promise to do something for me, I'll promise to keep your secret.”
Inuyasha cocked his head to the other side which made the tip of his other ear flop over. He looked suspiciously at the little boy. “What kind of promise?”
The boy's nearly violet eyes twinkled slightly as he smiled and he stood up from his sitting position on the ground under a tree. With a blue rubber playground ball in one hand, he dusted his jeans off with the other hand before he looked back at Inuyasha. “I'm Miroku. Mushin says I have spiritual powers. Cool, huh? Anyway, some of the kids…especially the demons, don't like me very much because they can kind of feel my powers in my aura, so…”
Inuyasha looked at him and frowned in confusion. “What's an aura?” Inuyasha asked scratching his head.
Miroku positively beamed at being asked the question and again cleared his throat importantly, reciting a definition you could tell he had memorized. “Well, the aura is an energy field that surrounds living things. It is our life force. It can also been called the human energy field and morpelo…. Morpni...morphinal…” Miroku sighed and said frustrated, “ it's the energy thing that makes us who we are and what we act like and junk.”
Inuyasha wrinkled his nose and eyebrows in confusion. “You mean like a soul?”
Miroku nodded…thought a bit….then shook his head. “Kind of, but not really, it's different.” Miroku took another deep sigh as he realized he still hadn't explained what he wanted. “Look. All I want you to do is be my friend and help me not to get beat up. I can fight pretty good but some demons have a lot of power. If you do that I'll keep your secret.” Miroku said and then pulled at the bottom of his shirt nervously with his free hand.
Inuyasha seemed to turn and look at the playground, what he was really doing was looking Kagome square in the face. Kagome's smile was all the encouragement he needed as he nodded decisively and turned back to Miroku.
“All right then. My name is Inuyasha.” With that the little hanyou boy leaned in closer to Miroku, his ears perked in excitement. “You wanna hear my secret now?” He rushed out in a loud whisper.
Miroku leaned in closer, sneaking glances around them to see if anyone was listening in. Kagome laughed then and Inuyasha cast a glare at her. She covered her mouth to stifle the rest of her giggle at the two new friends' attempts at being sneaky. Inuyasha furrowed his eyebrows and pouted at Kagome a moment then turned back to an anxiously waiting Miroku. “Well….the secret is…. I have an angel.”
Miroku took a step back then frowned. Holding his ball in both hands he started bouncing it against the ground. “Is that it? That's no secret.” Miroku said as he continued to play.
Inuyasha was the exact mirror of Kagome's expression as both had dropped their jaws in amazement at the scrawny little black haired boy who was happily playing with his kickball. Inuyasha shook his head, coming out of his surprise finally.
“No. You don't get it….”
“Sure I do.” Miroku said nodding his own head. “Mushin told me we all have angels…”
Inuyasha growled in frustration. “That's not it! That's not why it's a secret!”
Miroku looked confused. “Why is it a secret then?” He asked catching the ball and holding it in both hands and tilting his head to the side.
Inuyasha looked around, his ears twitching this way and that to make sure no one snuck up on him then leaned toward Miroku again. “Because I can see her,” Inuyasha said then nodded as if that should settle everything.
Miroku blinked a moment then asked. “See who?”
Inuyasha went to smack himself in the forehead, paused, thought better of it, and then smacked Miroku in the forehead.
“Ouch! What was that for??” Miroku said dropping the ball and rubbing his head with both hands.
“Inuyasha…” Kagome said with a warning tone and her fists planted on her hips.
“Well he didn't get it! Even after I told him that I can see you!” Inuyasha said and sighed greatly frustrated now.
“You just confused him is all. Now try again.” Kagome said, her wings shifting as she looked around to make sure they weren't drawing too much attention.
“I don't want to try again. He's just going to be like everyone else! You'll see. Then I won't be able to come to school here anymore, and mom will be sad, and…”
Miroku watched Inuyasha have this short conversation with the air until his eyes widened and everything his silver haired friend had told him fell into place. “You mean you can actually see and talk to your angel???”
Inuyasha and Kagome paused in their argument to look over at Miroku, both hesitating as their minds were racing to figure out what to do next. Finally Inuyasha reacted first. “Well that's what I've been trying to tell you dimwit. I can see my angel.” Inuyasha gave a matter of fact nod and looked over at Kagome smiling as he did so. His smile soon faded and his eyebrows furrowed in concern as he noticed the worried expression on his angel's face. Kagome fidgeted with her hands waiting on Miroku's reaction and tried to smile consolingly toward her charge.
Miroku noted the sudden change of expression on Inuyasha's face and exchanged his wide eyed look of amazement for the most solemn face he could muster.
“You don't have to worry about me telling Inuyasha. I'm great at keeping secrets, It's all part of my training.” Miroku said proudly. “There's things I can't tell people about my training either or else they can use it against me.” Miroku bent and picked up the ball smiling as he straightened and looked at Inuyasha. “Do you want to play kick ball? Your angel can play too if she wants to.” Miroku did his best to smile charmingly at where he thought Kagome might be….which happened to be in the opposite direction she was actually in. Stifling another laugh Kagome gave Inuyasha a message to relay to his new friend.
Inuyasha turned to Miroku after perking an ear in Kagome's direction and said, “She says thank you but that she'd rather watch us play.” With that Inuyasha nodded to a wide open space in the field where no one was yet playing. “Let's go over here then.” The two boys took off at a run with Miroku almost keeping pace with the young half demon.
“Hey Inuyasha, is your angel pretty?” Miroku asked as they reached the desired patch of field. He tossed the ball up and kicked it in mid air toward Inuyasha.
Inuyasha let the ball bounce on the ground then bounced it on his knee before kicking it back to Miroku. He answered, “I guess so, why?”
Miroku did a few small maneuvers with the ball before sending it sailing in an arc toward Inuyasha while he answered back, “Because I was going to ask her if she had a boyfriend.”
Inuyasha's focus went from the ball sailing toward him, to Miroku in an instant. His voice high pitched and horrified as he blurted out “WHAT??”
Before Inuyasha knew it, he was lying splayed out on the grass of the field. The ball which had smacked him in his moment of distraction went bouncing off unnoticed as Miroku, and a blushing angel rushed to Inuyasha's side. Still dazed Inuyasha ignored the questions from both boy and angel as to whether he was all right. Instead still on the ground and in a dead-pan voice he turned toward the boy.
“Miroku.”
“Yeah?”
& #8220;Don't ever ask that again.”
