DISCLIAMER: Inuyasha, belong to Rumiko Takahashi and not to me. The AU world this story is set in, the plot and any additional characters do belong to me though, and so please don't try to take them without my permission. I make no profit of this story, and am doing it only for my own enjoyment (and hopefully yours too).
This is an AU set in a desert world, not really based on any culture on earth. No demons or mikos, everyone is human (a first for me).
PROLOGUE
The day started off like any other for the people of Ado, a small village near the border in the desert kingdom of Inu, but it would not end that way. Before the end of the day the lives of the villagers would be rudely shaken and for at least one young villager changed forever.
Kagome had known for some time that this day was coming, the day when King Inutaisho decided that he had enough of the village's disobedience and felt it was time to do something about it. How could she not, what with the villages not paying their taxes in years and disregarding whichever of the King's laws they felt didn't quite suit them? How could the King not take offence to that in the long run? Convincing her father of that though, was another matter. Not that Kagome hadn't tried, repeatedly. She'd tried almost everyday for years, but as with everything else his daughter said Khayyam ignored her. She was the daughter who should have been a son and he had very little time for anything she said. Then again, he had very little time for her brother or mother either. The bastard spent most of his time at the brothel in town these days, pretending that his family didn't exist. There was no love lost between father and family. How such a man could gain so much respect from their fellow villagers and be made Villiage Headman, Kagome would never understand. Couldn't they see what a self-serving pig he really was? Apparently not, since most of them followed his every will like the sheep that they were.
Khayyam had said for years that the village needn't pay mind to the King, he was so far away what would it matter? He said that the money due for taxes would serve the village much better in the long run than they would the already rich King, so they shouldn't bother paying. He said that they knew better than the King what would best serve their village, so they should decide for themselves which laws to follow. And he said that the King wouldn't even know, and if he did he wouldn't care what such a small and unimportant village so far away from the capital was doing.
Khayyam was wrong on all counts, as the company of King's soldiers now surrounding the village said as clear as day.
Kagome looked at her father in disgust, as she stood with her fellow villagers in the town centre awaiting the list of demands from the King, which the army's spokesperson said would spare their village if they agreed to them all without argument. Kagome could already tell just by looking at her father that he would go along with all the demands, whatever they were. The man was shaking and practically wetting himself in his fear. Some sadistic part of her hoped that they would demand the life of the headman as part of the demands, it would serve the bastard right. Then again, he would probably point to someone else in the crowd and say he was the headman to save himself and his damn cronies would back him up. Even after all of this he still had their loyalty for some reason inexplicable to Kagome.
Most of Kagome, however, was just worried that the price would be one the village could afford to pay. As the army spokesperson started reading off the list of demands, Kagome stood up straighter to listen, as she silently promised that even if her father was only concerned with himself she would do everything she could to ensure that her village got through this okay. Unlike her father, she would do anything for her family and fellow villagers.
AUTHOR'S NOTES
Short I know, but this is just the prologue. The real story will start in the next chapter. This is story is unlike any other fanfic I've read so far, and I've got to say I've read quite a few of them. Hopefully I'm right and it is an original, and hopefully people will like it.
