CHAPTER 2

Kagome's fear turned to surprise when she saw the young women maybe a year or two older than her standing in the doorway watching Kagome with a curious, probing stare. She way very pretty, with straight and long dark brown hair and brown eyes. She was a couple of inches taller and slightly slimmer, her curves while still impressive not quite as pronounced as Kagome's own. What Kagome couldn't figure out was what she was. Her outfit looked too conservative to be a concubine, being a long rose pink gown that left her arms bare and fell in soft waves to the floor, far less revealing that the short and skimpy pale purple robe she had been given. But it also looked too well made and used too good materials to be the outfit of a servant, even one serving the Royal family.

Before Kagome could figure it out the new girl spoke.

“So you're the new concubine, ha?”

Slowly, Kagome nodded, not sure what to say.

The other girl didn't seem perturbed by her silence. “I'm Sango, currently Prince Inuyasha's favourite concubine, but that's mostly due with him not being able to fully stand Dalal and Muna. They're both real bitches who spend their time scheming ways to gain Inuyasha's favour and thus power for themselves. Needless to say none of their schemes have worked so far, if you're lucky you'll barely see them. They keep mostly to themselves when they're not sucking up to Inuyasha. So, are you like them, or are you actually someone worthwhile for me to bother talking to?” She asked bluntly.

“I, I don't want to be like them.” Kagome shuttered, rather thrown for a loop by the other's girls bluntness. “I, I don't really know how I should act, but I know I don't want to be like that.”

Sango instantly seemed to brighten. “Good, you have no idea how much I need a female companion who isn't a scheming bitch or a brutish, stuck-up maid. What's your name? I'm guessing from your attitude you're new to the whole concubine idea.” Sango came and sat down on a pillow in Kagome's room while she was speaking. Not far, but not so close that Kagome felt cornered.

Kagome started to calm down slightly as Sango's attitude became friendlier. She hoped it wasn't an act, and that Sango really was friendly and not simply trying to get something out of her. Still, somehow Kagome didn't think that was the case.

“I'm Kagome, and your right I am new to the whole concubine idea.” Kagome said. “I never even considered that I would be put into this position until a couple of weeks ago. My village, at the suggestion of my idiot bastard of a father, had been forgoing paying taxes for years, and the King finally decided to do something about it. One of the demands the King made to avoid the village being razed was that a woman from the village go back with the soldiers to serve as his concubine. However, when I got here and the King saw how young I was, he decided to give me to Prince Inuyasha instead.”

Sango made a sympathetic face. “Man that's rough. I heard that the King was cracking down on disobedient villages lately, but I hadn't heard anything about him taking women to serve as his concubines. I wonder what Lady Izayoi thinks about that.”

“Lady Izayoi?” Kagome repeated, trying to think where she had heard that name. “The King's Second Wife?”

“Yeah, second and favourite and our unofficial queen.” Sango said with a grin. “You're new here so I'll tell you what the whole damn palace already knows and gossips about. The King's marriage to his First Wife, Lady Aliah was arranged by their families when they were children. Neither of them can stand the other, and as soon as the Lady Aliah gave birth to Prince Sesshomaru the two started avoiding each other like the plague. Now days the two can barely stomach being in the same room as each other, let alone the same bed. Aliah basically lays around in the First Wife's Pavilion, telling herself how important she is, while the King goes about his duties during the day and spends his nights with the wife he actually wanted, Izayoi. He barely pays any attention to his harem these days either, except to make sure they have everything they need or want to be happy.” Sango paused before continuing. “If you'd been made a part of that harem, chances are the King would have taken you once to secure his claim, then left you alone to enjoy the comforts that come which such a position without any of the added duties.”

“Oh.” Kagome said softly, thinking about what Sango had said. That actually didn't sound so bad, one night with the King and then comfort and pampering for the rest of her life. Then again, once or a thousand times, it wouldn't make her less of a whore, and she would still be keep captive likely for the rest of her anyway. What good was all the luxuries in the world without freedom? That was something she wouldn't get no matter which harem she was a part of.

“You know, that's one pretty damn revealing outfit for someone who clearly isn't looking forward to being a concubine.” Sango said. Not accusingly, just stating a fact, but it made Kagome flush with shame and embarrassment all the same.

“According to the maids, all my own clothes are unsuitable to greet the Prince wearing. They got this from somewhere and insisted I wear it.”

“Hmm.” Sango said as she studied the outfit. “From the looks of it, I'd say they borrowed it from Dalal. She's the one who dresses like that all the time, and for some reason they keep pushing me to dress the same. I guess they figure it fits the whole concubine persona. It's her signature colour too, so I'd say it's safe to say it's hers.” Seeing that Kagome still looked unhappy about the outfit now that it was once again on her mind, she spoke up again. “If you want, I'll lend you some of my clothes until you get some new clothes of your own. They're not quite as revealing, but they're well made enough that the maids won't give you a hard time for wearing them.” Kagome's heartfelt thankyou was enough to put a smile of Sangos' face. For the first time since she was given to Inuyasha as his concubine two years ago, Sango really thought she might have a friend in the harem.

Inuyasha grinned as he exited the bathhouse. He'd been having a good day so far. He and his best-friend-slash-Spiritual-Advisor, Miroku, had gone on a rather invigorating horse ride out across the desert outside the city that afternoon which resulted in a race, which he, naturally, won by a mile. Now after delivering his beloved stallion into the trusted hands of the palace grooms and taking a long relaxing bath he was ready to head into dinner with his father, mother and elder brother - his step-mother always ate by herself, thank the Gods. Not even her own son could stand her, although Aliah didn't seem to have clued into just how much Sesshomaru disliked her yet. Inuyasha had even heard a rumour that the palace kitchens were cooking his favourite tonight and he was looking forward to it.

“Well, Inuyasha, it's been real but I should get going before my father starts whining to my grandfather about what a disrespectful son I've become again, and saying how he thinks I've run off to join a travelling troupe or something.” Miroku said, exiting the bathhouse behind Inuyasha, his black hair, free from it's tail for once, hanging in wet clumps around his face.

Inuyasha snorted good-naturedly. “Personally if I was your father I'd consider that a blessing.” Inuyasha said with a grin, causing Miroku to laugh somewhat ruefully. Miroku's family had served as Spiritual Advisors to the Royal family for generations. In fact, Miroku's grandfather Abdullah was the currently Spiritual Advisor of the King, while his father Jabril was advisor to Sesshomaru (not a position to be envied as Sesshomaru was prone to more often than not ignore everything Jabril had to say). Inuyasha had known Miroku all his life, and was best friends with the man even before he became his official advisor, but Miroku was nothing like his revered and serious father and grandfather. Although Miroku did take his job seriously, to an extent anyway, the man was a notorious lecher and partier, and teased and tormented Inuyasha far more often than he gave him advice. Sure their religion wasn't one that required a vow of celibacy like he heard some did, but really… still, the man was a good friend and Inuyasha was actually pretty damn fond of him despite his many flaws.

“Well, I should go now, have fun tonight in your lovely little harem. One of these days I hope you'll be generous enough to let me borrow one for the night. That Sango has such a delicious behind.”

Inuyasha snorted but otherwise ignored that. Miroku had made the same joke more than once, and Inuyasha rarely bothered to answer anymore. Inuyasha knew Miroku wasn't serious which was good because otherwise he would be forced to kick his ass. While Inuyasha had no plans to take any of his concubines as wife or anything, he had too much respect for them than to lend any of them out like Miroku was joking. Miroku knew that all too well, and what's more if Inuyasha did take him up on his joking suggestion, Inuyasha would instantly lose all respect in Miroku's eyes; the man was a lecher, but he did have morals.

Walking towards the Royal Wing of the Palace, Inuyasha thought briefly about his concubines and wondered if he would in fact be requiring any of their services tonight. A hard ride on a horse often made him desire a hard ride on one of his concubines too, but tonight he was somewhat tired so maybe he would pass. Besides, he couldn't decide which one he'd rather have anyway. He liked Sango, but for some reason being with her lately had been feeling more and more awkward, like he was doing something wrong, although that didn't make much sense. She was his concubine, and she'd never given any sign that she didn't want to be with him. And he made it a point to always insure that she enjoyed it too, after all. Then there was Dalal and Muna. Both were annoying as hell, and during the day he didn't want to spend any more time with them than necessary, but they were both good fucks. He would probably feel guilty for using them that way if it wasn't for the fact that both spent so much time throwing themselves at him. Inuyasha sighed. Maybe he should just go to bed early and get a good night's sleep tonight. It wasn't like he had so little self-control that he needed to get laid every night after all.

“Inuyasha.”

Inuyasha looked up at the sound of his name, and grinned when he spotted his father standing outside the Royal Wing, apparently waiting for him.

“Hey Dad.” Inuyasha said, deliberately informal as always. “What's up, am I late for dinner?”

“No son, if fact you're early for once, which I good because I need to speak to you alone for a moment.” Inutaisho said, his voice so serious that Inuyasha instantly started paying more attention. “You remember when I told you about sending a company of soldiers out to the village of Ado to bring it back under my control.” Inuyasha nodded, he remembered, he just didn't see what it had to do with him. “Well, one of the demands I made if the villagers wanted their village to remain standing was that one of the village's women be sent here to henceforth serve as my concubine. The company arrived back today, and bringing the woman with them.”

Inuyasha made a face, trying not to imagine his father doing the deed with the unknown woman. “So what, you want me to keep Mum distracted long enough for you to go screw her or something?” He asked, guessing that his mother would not be happy about having a new rival for his father's attention. Izayoi knew Inutaisho loved her, but what kind of woman wouldn't feel threatened when their husband had another wife and a whole harem to keep him occupied? Actually Inuyasha didn't like it all that much either. Granted he wasn't really fit to pass judgement, but if he had a woman as great as his mother around, he swore he'd be loyal to her and her alone.

“Umm, no, actually it something else.” Inutaisho said, looking somewhat awkward for some reason. “You see, before the woman arrived I didn't realise just how young she would be. If fact, she's only seventeen, and well, I don't fell right `screwing' as you so eloquently put it, someone easily young enough to be my daughter. Which is why I ordered her placed in your harem instead and I expect you to take proper care of her.”

That surprised Inuyasha, and for a long moment he didn't know what to say. “What's her name?” Inuyasha asked finally.

Inutaisho smiled, looking happy that his son wasn't going to argue about this. “Her name's Kagome, and she's very pretty. Brave too from what I've seen from her. I think you'll like her, but you can decide that for yourself tonight. For now, we better go in before your mother or your brother come out looking for us. Come.” With that the King entered the Royal Wing and started in the direction of the dinning room with his still somewhat shocked son following behind him.

Kagome sat on a pillow in Sango's room, wearing a gown the older concubine had given her and absent-mindedly patting the cat in her lap. Kagome had been surprised when the golden and black cat had appeared out of nowhere and climbed onto her lap before starting to purr. Sango however had just grinned.

“That's Kirara.” Sango explained. “Inuyasha gave her to me as a birthday present a couple of months ago. Dalal and Muna were so jealous, because he's never gotten them presents. If she likes you it must mean that I was right about you making a good friend, because usually she doesn't like anybody besides me, the prince and Miroku the prince's Spiritual Advisor and best friend. She has good taste when it comes to people.”

Kagome sat there patting Kirara for a few more minutes before she finally worked up the courage to ask the question that had been on her mind almost all day. “What's Prince Inuyasha like?”

Sango smiled gently, she had guessed that this question was coming. “You don't need to be afraid of him, he's a good man and I dare say a good lover. He always does his best to ensure that his partner is pleasured as well. Even my first time, when I was every bit a scared as you are now, he made sure that it was as painless as possible for me. That more than most women can say about their partners, whether they're concubines or not.”

Kagome nodded, knowing that was true from the talk of married women in her old village she'd overheard in the past, and her mother's reactions those times when her father didn't have enough money to pay for a whore for the night, the pig.

Sango, in a attempt to quell Kagome's fears started talking then about all the good things Prince Inuyasha had done for her since she became his concubine, but Kagome didn't take much of it in, she was to busy worrying about what would happen when Prince Inuyasha called for her. Sure Sango said he was gentle with his lovers, but was he really?

All to soon it appeared that she was about to find out, as it wasn't long before a maid arrived in the doorway. Looking unhappy that she'd had to search for her, the maid informed Kagome that Prince Inuyasha had arrived and wished her presence in his chamber immediately. Placing Kirara back on the floor, and barely hearing Sango's quiet well wishes, Kagome followed the maid towards the prince's chamber, feeling more like she was following her to her own execution.
