Harsh Changes

Chapter Two-Of Mothers and Daughters

- - - - - - - - - -

Sango followed the unearthly sound that came in the direction of where her friends had disappeared, her weapon posed for action. How long had it been since she had last seen her friends, InuYasha and Kagome? Too long, she figured. The monk and the fox cub stayed behind, at Sango insistence. Then, she was sure they were OK. That what was holding them up was something minor. But a bad feeling had washed over her and it made her reckless with speed, causing her to mindlessly push through the undergrowth. As she stumbled through the underbrush, she ran across tetsusaiga lying lifeless by a tree. This stopped her dead in her tracks. Fear climbed up her, she grabbed the sword and quickens her speed, feeling a sick feeling inside her.

"Please, let me wrong." she begged the fates, out loud.

She prayed against all hope that InuYasha was just himself. That the sword in her hand meant nothing, but the fact he lost it. That he hasn't lost something much more important. Maybe he foolishly left it behind after Kagome and he had some little argument about something pointless, that the strange growling sounds were that of a dying demon. She stranded her hearing trying to hear the familiar sound of either Kagome's or InuYasha's voice. But as she neared the source of the sound, the more she had to realize what the sound really means. She felt a chill ran down her spine as she passed the huge bleeding demon InuYasha had gone after early that day. Its eyes were open as it laid there dead. She broke out into a run, desperate now, desperate to save her friends.

"Please, don't let me be too late."

But some how, some how she knew she was.

Sango threw her hiraikotsu, aiming for the middle of a massive oak on the edge of at was once a much smaller field. The tree split in haft and fell down, crashing against the ground in a clatter of loud sounds, almost as loud as the angry echoing in her head. She caught her weapon effortlessly.

She starred out into the field, praying to catch a flash of red among the trees, then 'accidentally' throwing the hiraikatsu. She wouldn't kill him, just injury him, just cause him great pain. It not like she doesn't want to kill him. Destroy him for what he did to Kagome. She can still see her, under him that way, the pain in her face. Damn him.

The only thing that kept him breathing was Kagome's pleas. If Kagome hadn't of practical begged Sango to leave him along, there would have been an unmarked grave in this forest. For the life of her, she couldn't figure out why Kagome had spared his puny little life. He had no right to live.

She noticed she was shaking. She couldn't help it. It wasn't in her nature to just forgive and forget, not about something as serious as this. Kagome had been dishonored by this, her innocence stolen, taken so harshly. It wasn't right.

Sango let out an angry huff, before picking up her weapon and throwing it again. Another innocent tree went down in her rage. At least, she spared the damn hanyou. At least, for Kagome's sake, he was still walking around, breathing the same air as poor Kagome.

Another wave of heated emotion came over her and she hastily caught her weapon and threw it out again, taking down a couple of trees this time. She reached again, but her mind, still boiling with hate, misjudged and the hiraikotsu went flying behind her. It crashed into the ground, kicking up a cloud of dirt.

For a moment she just starred blankly at it, before coming up and pulling it out of the ground. She looked up at the setting sun, letting the fire in her mind burn unchecked. Then a small mew brought her attention off to the side, where Kirara was, who had been staying a good distance away from her master, letting her work off the angry that was inside her.

"We should be heading back." she told herself, placing the weapon on her back and heading for the village, Kirara by her side.

Kagome completely lost it. She kicked, she screamed, she cried. She completely destroyed the bathroom, throwing bottles and anything else she could get her hands on. Then she collapsed in the center of her destruction and just sobbed.

"This isn't happening!!" she screamed, "None of this is happening. I wasn't raped. I'm not pregnant and InuYasha didn't do anything to me!!! NO!! NO!! NO!!"

She stopped screaming. As much as she wanted her screams to change it, as much as she begged for it not to be, it was. She looked around the bathroom. No matter how much she screamed, the damage was still there. She had to face it. She had been raped. She was pregnant.

She put her hand on her belly, feeling that familiar voice again. So, it was true, she thought, she was experiencing the aura of the baby. It was strange, so hard to put into words. But she knew it was true. The baby aura was there. This was real.

She gazed around the bathroom again. She actually started laughing. The place looked like a hurricane hit it. Lotion and toilet paper everywhere, making the light blue room looks like an art project gone wrong.

"Maybe that what I'll tell Mother." she giggled, imagining the daunting task of trying to convince the mother this was all a misunderstanding. She let her laughter fad away.

"I better clean this up." she told herself, "and I better hurry if I want to get it done before mother gets home."

Almost forgetting about her condition she went about cleaning. Taking up the bottles she had thrown around and putting them back where they belonged, wiping off the bits of lotion and shampoo that had escaped their containers when they were flying through the air.

She stopped when she ran across the pregnancy test. As she picked it off the floor, letting the pink stripes stare up at her from her open palm, reality came crashing down onto her. Tears began to form in her already red and tired eyes.

How was she going tell InuYasha? This was going to kill him. He loved Kikyou. This was never in HIS plans and certainly wasn't how Kagome envision the first time she was going to have a child. She dropped the test into the trash can and let a worried frown draw across her face.

"How am I going to tell him?" she asked herself again.

The bathroom offered nothing but her echo. She placed a bunch of toilet paper on top of the test to effectively hide it from causal eyes. Tears started to run down her face. She was going to dehydrate if she didn't stop that. Her arms wrapped around her middle, trying to stop the terrible feeling of dread from rising up to her heart.

"How am I going to tell him?"

InuYasha was running through the forest, daylight beginning to peek over the east horizon. The shadows of the forest stretched out attempting to snag him as he ran, but he easily evaded them. He had been running all night. His feet pounded against the ground as he tried to out run his guilt. But guilt was a fast enemy.

He didn't remember details of what happened. Only what his mind imagined after counting her injuries. And his over-active imagination had plenty of horrible images to offer him. Those images haunted him like phantoms, screaming the same statement over and over again.

"It's all your fault."

"SHUT-UP!!" he screamed into the wind.

Of course, they didn't stop, continuing their horrid little chant. He shook his head, trying to shake the voices loose from his mind. All this thinking to himself causes his attention to be averted from where he was going, a dangerous thing to do when running full speed through a dark forest. His foot caught on a root he should have saw, causing him to tumbling head first into the ground. Now he was facing down a horrified looking squirrel.

The squirrel at first just stood there, shocked. But finally regain itself and took off, skimping up a tree to safety. InuYasha pushed himself off the ground and looked up at the squirrel, which was peeking around the edge of a branch at him.

"STOP LOOKING AT ME!!" he yelled.

The squirrel immediately complied, taking off with some hidden part of the tree. He growled again, just in case it was still looking at him in a place he just couldn't see it. He sat down; feeling incredible tired all of sudden. Running all night can do that to a creature. The feeling almost consumed him, and he felt a pain in his chest. InuYasha closed his eyes.

He wasn't going to cry. It wasn't his fault this all happened. What was he saying? Of course it was his fault. He had foolish ran off, trying to prove how tough he was. He proved it alright. Now, Kagome would never be the same. His world was completely shattered.

"Feh." he said out loud, disgusted by himself.

What right to he have to feel sorry for himself? He wasn't the one that had been defiled. Kagome was. He had taken her like an animal. Broken her wrist, bruised her beautiful face, and scarred her body beyond repairing. Those scars were going to haunt her for the rest of her life and he had the nerve to feel sorry for himself.

How could he have let this happen? How could he be so foolish to have let this happen, to Kagome, no less? Was he just destiny to hurt any woman he came in contact with? Damn him. Damn him and his demon blood.

Demons have plenty of stamina, as Kagome soon found out. She kept drifting in and out of conscience as he kept pounding into her. But she wished for the blackness. Her body radiated with pain. She was sure her wrist was broken as it lay against her back. His belly was against it as he continued to move in and out of her. She could feel his breath against her shoulder blades, and she heard his grunts and groans. She opened her eyes to stare at the ground beneath her. Mud made from her spit and blood laid only inches from her nose. She felt so dirty, so disgusting. His claws were digging into her hips as he gripped her there. Suddenly, she heard footsteps. Fear clambered up her spine. He also took notice, stopping his work to gaze up in the direction of the footsteps. He growled, hurtfully finishing what he started, before letting go of her. Her arms fell to the side of her head and her body fell forward, her arms unable to support her. She turned her head toward the sound, causing her ear to press against the earth. The bushes began to rustle and out stepped Sango, the tetsusaiga in one hand, the hiraikotsu in the other. She gasped at the scene in front of her.

"Sango." Kagome whimpered.

InuYasha growled throatily. Sango eyes narrowed on him.

"What have you done?" she screamed, the sword in her hand shaking with rage.

"What have you DONE?"

"Mother."

She turned to look at her child. Such a formal name chilled her.

"Yes, Kagome."

"Can we talk?"

She nodded and led her to the couch. They sat down together, her child shaking with some hidden conflict. At first, it seemed that the courage that brought her this far was going to fail her. But her mother quickly covered her shivering hand with her own. Ms. Higurashi waited patiently for her daughter. She needed time to gather her wandering courage back up.

"Mom, I have something I need to tell you."

"Is it about your injuries?"

Kagome nodded, tears began running down her face. This was so hard.

"It OK, Kagome. Take your time."

"I-I didn't-I didn't fall." she stammered, the tears effecting her voice.

"What happened, honey?"

Her courage was going to run out again, so before she lost her nerve, she blurted out, "I'm pregnant."

Her mother's eyes went wide and at first she only starred blankly at her daughter, the words not quite sinking in as true yet. It was too big of jump. This caused Kagome to lower her head, her tears turning into full out sobs. Ms. Higurashi finally absorbed what this meant.

Her daughter was hurt, she had been raped. Someone had raped her poor little girl while she was over in the feudal era. What was she thinking letting her daughter go over to that untamed place like that? This was all her fault. She quickly covered her weeping daughter with her arms, attempting to sooth her with "It'll be OK."s.

"Mama, it wasn't his fault. I mean, he couldn't help it. Mama."

"What are you talking about?"

"It wasn't InuYasha's fault. He didn't want to hurt me, Mama. He didn't-" her sobs cut her off, finally confessing had brought about even more tears.

"It was my fault. I-I-I shouldn't have followed him. I-"

"Shh, no Kagome. It wasn't your fault."

Her mother brought her closer, letting her cry on her shoulder. So, that was what had happened. He had hurt her little girl, forced her into this state. She should have never trusted that monster. Never. How could he have done this to her and how could have convince her he didn't have any fault in it?

That was vile. There was nothing worse than forcing an emotional-bruised girl to think her any thing to do with this. As she gently stroked Kagome's hair, trying to calm her daughter, Ms. Higurashi came to a decision. She would preserve her daughter's life. This won't change anything. He wasn't going to force her into this life. He would have nothing to do with Kagome again. She would see to it.
