Haunted House, Haunting Past ch.8

~Thick crimson liquid oozed from between her fingers from the wound in her side. She had lost a lot of blood and losing more with every staggering step she took, leaving a crimson trail behind her. As she approached, she saw him jump from his perch in the trees to meet her.. Just as he always did..

“Kikyou..” he shouted. Fear rushed through him when he realised she was wounded. He could smell her blood. He went to her and she collapsed into his arms.

He held her a moment unsure of what to do. A sharp pain shot through him and he pulled away from her. He stumbled back, dizzy from the already large amount of blood loss, as he fell back against his tree. He looked up at her, instantly regreting it.

She held a dagger dripping with his blood in her pale, trembling hand. He saw no hint of emotion in her eyes.

He froze as she lined her arrow on her bow. Confusion ran through his features before she let go and the arrow pierced him through the chest. His shock was quickly replaced with hurt that flashed through his golden eyes as they drifted shut, letting the darkness consumed him.

The priestess collapsed to the ground as she pulled a jeweled necklace from her neck. She wished upon it and the pink jewel clouded a dark purple before it flashed a glow over her.

It granted her wish.. But she’d forever regret it..~

Kagome dragged her feet in the hallway as she made her way to the cafeteria. She grabbed her tray, but hadn’t really felt much like eating, not after that dream last night..

Kagome saw Sango sitting at a table with Miroku and sat down beside them. “Hey guys.” Kagome groaned.

Today had been a lousy day since the beginning. Not only had Kagome gotten no sleep last night, but she had over-slept because her stupid brother thought it's be funny to turn off her alarm, she had tripped over her shoes in her rush to get out of bed, she found out her mom was going to be gone on her business for another week, she had been late for school, and now she had missed half her lunch time finishing a pop quiz in math that she was pretty sure she had failed. Kagome was exhausted and just wanted more than anything to go home.

“Hey, Kagome. Glad to see you’re all better.” Sango paused and eyed her friend wearily. “What’s wrong?”

Kagome sighed. “Oh, nothing,” She said hoping Sango wouldn’t push for a better answer. Really, the main thing bothering her was that dream she had about Inuyasha, but she couldn’t tell Sango or Miroku about that. They would probably think she was insane. That nightmare had left Kagome’s mind seeking answers.. Had that really happened to Inuyasha?

“Are you sure? You look like you’ve seen a ghost..” Sango replied, studying Kagome’s pale face.

“No, really, I’m fine.” She reassured. ‘Sango, you have no idea..’ Kagome thought as her eyebrow developed a slight twitch.

“So you’re still coming with us to hang out at the mall this weekend, right?” Miroku asked distracted, winking at a passing girl who giggled as she walked by.

Sango dangerously glared at the girl, effectively running her off before hitting Miroku hard over the head.

“As far as I know I don’t have anything else planned.” Kagome looked gloomily at her food. 'So, the girl's name was Kikyou..' Kagome mused to herself. She couldn’t stop thinking about that dream. ‘Poor Inuyasha.. He must have been heart broken.. He must have really loved her..’ Kagome thought sadly. Could it be that the same woman he had loved had put a curse on him? Why? What could he have possibly done to cause her to do such a thing?

The biggest question was why was she accepting all this so easily?? She was living with a ghost.. A GHOST for heaven's sake!! Ghosts weren't suposed to be real!! They were suposed to be the result of some child's over-active imagination or even something you dress up as for Halloween.. But they most definately weren't suposed to be real!!

The lunch bell rang, pulling Kagome out of her thoughts.

"Well, I guess we'll see ya later, Kagome." Sango said sadly. The friends said their goodbyes and all went to their separate classes.

Kagome had choir next. She needed to speak to her music teacher about letting her join the school play. Her mother would get suspicious if she never had one after that stunt she had pulled saying that she was practicing for a play after being caught talking to herself..

Kagome let out a sigh of relief when she finally got home.

Slipping off her shoes at the front door, Kagome peeked into the living room.

Her grandpa sat on the couch with some special on ancient myths and legends playing on the TV, but he was too busy snoring to watch it.

Her mother was still gone on her trip and Souta was in his room playing video games.

She had talked to her music teacher and after a little convincing, he had finally agreed to let her join the play. Kagome had been happy until she found out she had gotten the lead female part, Kouga had gotten the lead male part, and did she mention that there was a kissing scene? Or the fact that she suffered from stage fright?

This day just kept getting worse and worse.. Kagome groaned and headed up to her room, but was surprised Inuyasha wasn’t there. Since she checked the attic and he wasn’t there either, Kagome had a pretty good idea where he might be..

She went back downstairs and was about to head out the door, but she paused before she opened it. What if Inuyasha got mad at her? What if he wanted to be alone?

Kagome really wanted to talk with him. She needed answers and she was gonna get ‘em one way or another.

Confidence restored, Kagome continued on her way out the door.

~ * ~

Inuyasha sat in his tree that over-looked the depressing view around him.

He had so many memories here and now they were as dead as the garden. No one had taken care of it for years and he doubted it could be brought back to life. Inuyasha sighed at he stared at his surroundings, taking in how much had changed. A low growl vibrated in his chest as he saw Kagome coming through the thick, creaky wooden door.

Her gaze roamed over the dead garden, her eyes lingering a few moments on his body where it was pinned to the tree. She glanced around cautiously obviously looking for his ghost form. She continued to make her way along the stone path and deeper into the garden.

He soundlessly jumped from his tree when she had wondered far enough out of sight to not see him.

She stopped as she came to the river's edge. Kagome looked sadly at the dark pool of water. She stood there a few moments before she started to get that familiar paranoid feeling of someone watching her, but somehow she didn't think it was just her imagination this time.

Kagome turned to see Inuyasha. He towered over her small form, shooting her a murderous glare that could make even the terminator shit his pants.

Kagome could see right through his little facade and she wasn't falling for it. She knew better by now. Inuyasha was harmless. It was mostly just an act. Though she would probably be scared out of her wits right now if she didn’t know any better..

Kagome rolled her eyes and sat down on the hard bare ground, pulling her legs up to her chest and wrapping her arms tightly around them. She gazed over the water. She had dreams of this place so many times before. It was a shame no one had taken care of it. It had been so beautiful in her dreams.

He continued to glare at her a little longer, before he gave up and sat beside her. He sighed, staring over the eerily dark inky water. “What’d you want?”

She paused before answering. “Umm.." She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. "Answers?”

He sighed again. “Answers to what?” he demanded.

Kagome looked away and pulled an innocent face. “Oh, just about how you were cursed..”

“Well I’m not telling you, so just drop it!” Inuyasha snapped at her.

Kagome winced a little at his tone before regaining her courage to continue. “Her name was Kikyou, wasn’t it?” Kagome spoke softly.

His head sunk low and his bangs shadowed his face. His shoulders slumped and shook slightly. “How do you know that?” His voice was quiet and rigid.

Kagome looked away. “I-I umm..” she chewed the corner of her lip.

"Well, spit it out!" his patience running thin.

Kagome was about to yell back at him but he cut her off.

"You know what? This is bullshit." Inuyasha grumbled as he stood and retreated into the top branches of the nearest tree.

Kagome bit back her anger and slowly counted to ten to regain her calm. She made her way to stand at the bottom of the tree and tilted her head to stare up at him from the very top. "Inuyasha, I'm.. I'm sorry, okay?"

Inuyasha rolled his eyes. "Keh." 'Sure she is..' he thought bitterly. She didn't know how much it hurt to be betrayed by someone. Someone that you thought you could trust. Someone who had shown you another side of life. The last person you expected to hurt you right as you let your gaurd down. That was probably Kikyou's plan all along. Get close to him and then betray him just when he thought he could trust her. He wasn't about to open up to someone else. Look where it had gotten him last time. He wasn't about to let this stupid girl do the same.

Kagome continued. "Inuyasha, I shouldn't have pushed. I'm sorry, but.. I just think that I should know why a strange ghost demon is going to be haunting me for the rest of my life.."

That brought Inuyasha's attention back to the girl at the bottom of the tree. "What? Haunting? Am I really bothering you that much? Fine, if that's how it is then maybe I-"

"No, that's not what I meant!" Kagome said quickly, turning her gaze to the ground. "What I was trying to say, was that if we're going to be spending a lot of time together, then I just think we should get to know each other a little better."

"Keh, like I really want to be friends with you."

Kagome was taken aback. She couldn't help the sudden throbbing of hurt in her chest.

All she was trying to do was help him. She'd thought that since he was so lonely, that maybe they could be friends. After all, she had been feeling rather lonely lately too. With her father gone and all, her family had suddenly been narrowed down to three. Her mother had been working a lot lately and their family was growing apart. Maybe she needed him to be her friend just as such as he needed a friend.

Tears threatened to overflow from her eyes, but she held them back. She'd been stupid to think he would actually consider her a friend after all her effort she put into befriending him.

Inuyasha stiffened. He could smell the salty tears as it asaulted his scensitive nose. Why did she have to cry? Why did she have to be such a cry baby? He sighed, but before he knew it, he jumped down from the tree, landing beside her.

"Kagome, look, I didn't mean to make you upset.." Okay, so maybe he did, but that was beside the point. "Just please stop crying?"

Kagome sniffed and looked up at him surprised.

Inuyasha looked back at her. Her tears framed her eyes, making it seem as though they were sparkling. He blushed slightly before turning away. "Why are you lookin at me like that for?"

Kagome smiled a little at him. "You called me by my name."

Inuyasha looked back at her with confusion. He had to force back the urge to wipe away a tear that was streaming down her cheek. He couldn't touch her anyway. His hand would just go right through her. It had been so long since he felt anything. He had become disconnected from the world around him. Like he wasn't apart of it anymore. Why did people always seem to want what they can't have?

"So what if I said your name? What's the big deal?" he asked her with indifference.

Kagome suddenly felt a little stupid. She didn't know why it made her feel good to have him say her name.. It was just that he never used it before. He would just call her 'stupid' or 'wench' or 'bitch'. But when he put it like that, it made it sound like it wasn't a big deal.

"Oh, nothing.." Kagome said turning her eyes back to the ground.

Inuyasha sighed. This girl seemed harmless enough. Maybe he'd over reacted a little. "So.. What did you want to know?" he asked reluctantly.

Kagome looked back up at him with a soft smile. "You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to.."

Inuyasha didn't say anything for a moment, then looked away and shrugged. "Okay then, I guess I won't tell you.."

Kagome glared at him. That cocky bastard! He did that on purpose!

He looked at her knowingly. "So, what was it you wanted to know?" he asked again.

Kagome shuffled her feet thoughtfully. "Well, I.. I wanted to know who Kikyou is.."

Inuyasha ignored the pain inching its way into his chest that came with hearing her name. "You mean who she was.." he corrected.

"Y-you mean she's dead?" Kagome asked hesitantly.

Inuyasha shrugged again. "As far as I know.."

"What does that mean?"

He sat down at the base of the tree and motioned for her to sit beside him. "I wouldn't know because I didn't actually see her die, but the last time I saw her before I died, she didn't look too good."

Kagome obeyed and sat beside him. 'So that dream really did happen.' Kagome thought to herself. "So who was she?" Kagome asked.

Inuyasha went silent a moment before answering. "She.. She was a priestess."

Kagome looked at him weird.

He noticed and took it as a sign to continue. "Kikyou was the protector of a jewel called the Shikon no Tama. It contained powers to grant any wish that it's posessor asked for. In the wrong hands, it could cause a lot of damage, so she was chosen to protect it. It was her job to kill demons. It was her duty as a miko.."

"So what happened to her?"

His ear twitched in irritation. This girl was so annoying.. How could she ask so many questions? "I-I don't know.. We.. She and I were.. Close."

"What do you mean by 'close'?" she asked.

His eyes narrowed. Okay, now she was starting to get a little too personal.. He bit back the urge to snap at her. "Well, we.. spent a lot of time together.."

She nodded, taking in the new information. "Why did she put the curse on you?"

Inuyasha winced. "I don't know, okay!" He couldn't stop himself from yelling at her this time.

Kagome bit her lip. "I'm- I'm sorry."

He sighed, feeling a little guilty. "I don't want to talk about it anymore."

Kagome nodded again and stood up to leave.

"Hey, where do you think you're goin?" he asked her.

She looked back at him with confusion. "I thought you said you didn't want to talk anymore.."

"No, I said 'I didn't want to talk about it anymore', not that 'I didn't want talk anymore..'"

Kagome held back a smile. "So, you want me to stay?"

He looked away and his ears flattened. "Well, I mean.. You can stay if you want.. You don't have to.."

Kagome knew that was about the closest thing to a 'yes' as she was gonna get. She sat back down beside him. "So, what did you want to talk about then?"

"Well, I told you about me, so it's your turn."

"What do you wanna know?"

"Uh, I dunno.." Was his smart reply.

"Umm.. Lets see.. I grew up at our family shrine in Tokyo, I have an annoying little brother named Souta, I'm 16 years old, I'm in the 10th grade, I suck at math.."

At this point Inuyasha stopped listening. That girl just wouldn't shut up! Her mouth just kept going! Finally she stopped at looked at him. He realised she was expecting him to say something. He continued looked at her dumbly.

She sighed. "You weren't listening to a word I said, were you?"

"Uh, well.. Not really.."

She sighed again. At least he was honest.. "I asked how old you were."

"Well, I would be about one-hundred fifty years old in human years. I stopped aging after I died.."

She stared at him, her eyes wide and her mouth hung open.

"But.. I guess I'm around eighteen years old as a demon.."

Realizing how stupid she must have looked gawking at him, Kagome quickly pulled herself together. "So, do you have any other family?"

Inuyasha didn't like to think about his brother. He didn't have very fond memories.. "No.."

"No parents, brothers or sisters?"

"Nope, all dead." He said casually. How'd their conversation suddenly get turned back to him anyway? Didn't he say he didn't want to talk anymore about his past? "So what about your father? I haven't seen him around, yet.." Inuyasha asked her.

"He's dead." she said darkly.

He'd first taken her for someone who was naive and didn't know anything about death, but as he looked into her eyes at that moment, he knew he had been sadly mistaken. He knew what she was going through because he'd gone through the same thing when his mother had died.

Of coarse, he'd been much younger than her and both of his parents died not far apart, and he'd seen his mother die. He never really knew his father, and the only family he had left hated his guts and had a stick shoved way too far up his ass, and he'd had a pretty violent childhood of other children beating him, calling him names, blaming him for things he didn't do, his first love and the only person he'd ever opened up to, betrayed him. Now that he thought about it.. his life sucked, so why in hell did he want it back so bad?
