Chapter 6
Darkness to Darkness
Long lost words whisper slowly to me
Still can't find what keeps me here
When all this time I've been so hollow inside
I know you're still there
Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you, loving you
I won't let you pull me down
Still can't find what keeps me here
When all this time I've been so hollow inside
I know you're still there
Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you, loving you
I won't let you pull me down
Under the uncertain cover of night, Kikyou flew like a damned spirit escaping hell from her hiding place to the lockers at Tabata train station. She wore dark glasses and a short haired wig, along with a big, shapeless black coat. Waiting until she felt relatively sure she was alone, Kikyou crept to the locker. She opened it quickly, and took out a medium sized cardboard box. Inside the box was a black velvet case, which she did not bother to lift out. When she lifted the cover, she let out a breath she had not known she was holding. They were all there, the jewels she and InuYasha had stolen and then hid from Naraku. Before they had been able to fence them, someone in the organization had turned them in and they had to separate and flee. Lifting out the Shikon no Tama, a large, colorless, flawless, old European cut diamond, her heart beat loudly. InuYasha had been true to his word, and left it there for the day they could retrieve it together. Once, this diamond was going to buy a way out for Kikyou, InuYasha and his girlfriend, Kagome. A new life for the three of them, far away from Naraku in another country was what they sought. Now she wanted to use it as a lure, because the only way for them to be free of him was to either kill him, or be killed by him. Kikyou preferred the first option…. Quickly she stashed it in her coat pocket. Then she shut the case, closed the box and locked them back in the locker.
It wasn't far from the lockers to the women's restroom. Kikyou had almost made it there, when she heard footsteps coming her way. She sped up, and flattened her back against a wall. The footsteps stopped, and she heard a locker being unlocked. What if InuYasha had made another key? What if Naraku had found the key in the suitcase she had left behind? It paid to be paranoid when you were being pursued by the Yakuza….

In a cellar room of a building owned by one of InuYasha's friends, he sat at a small table and opened a laptop. Kagome came over carrying drinks for them, and sat next to him to watch what he was doing. Plugging in the phone number of the phone he gave Kikyou, a map came up. It showed him that she was at the Tabata station, as he expected her to be. He had been checking her whereabouts all night, to be sure he had figured out what she is doing. He smiled grimly…
“I take it you found her where you expected to,” Kagome said. “Are you sure she is not just going to run off and keep the Shikon no Tama for herself?”
“I've known Kikyou a long time,” InuYasha replied. “She is a woman of her word. She is going to use the jewel as bait for Naraku…but I know he wants her as badly as he wants the jewel.”
A shudder went through Kagome and she hunched her shoulders. InuYasha put his arm around her, and she leaned against his side. She was lucky enough to never have caught Naraku's attention. She had a passing resemblance to Kikyou, so InuYasha kept her as much out of his Yakuza business as possible. Those few times she had seen Naraku had chilled her to the bone. He radiated the repugnant energy of true evil…
“How did a strong woman like Kikyou ever end up with Naraku?” Kagome mused aloud.
“She was ambitious,” InuYasha answered. “The Yakuza is made up mostly of men, and women can only achieve power by being related to a member, or a wife or girlfriend.”
Kagome nodded, watching the red dot on the screen blink to show that Kikyou was still at the station. Idly she thought that Kikyou must have been there long enough to collect the jewel, why was she still hanging around?
“Once I know for sure that she is going to see Naraku, we immediately start to put our plan into action,” InuYasha said. “Are you prepared for this?”
The plan had frightened her at first. Then she reminded herself that she was InuYasha's girl. He needed to her to be strong, and after she saw how fearless Kikyou was there was no way Kagome was going to be any less then her. InuYasha had the utmost respect for Kikyou, and although she may seem weaker on the outside…she knew she was made of stronger stuff then they were aware of. This was her chance to prove it.
“Yes, I'm ready,” Kagome said confidently. “But how will we know Kikyou has contacted Naraku?”
InuYasha turned and gave her a wicked smile. “A GPS is not all I hid in that phone…”

Back at the Tabata station, Kanna checked the key number against the locker. She unlocked it, and motioned for one of the men with her to check it out. When no booby traps were found, another of Naraku's men took out the box. Kanna gestured for him to move aside, and opened the jewel case. A slight frown creased her brow when she saw that their prize was missing. She flipped open her phone and called her Oyabun.
“The jewel isn't here,” Kanna said.
The red rage that flowed out of the phone made the men with Kanna back away. The pale young woman never flinched. When he was done with his invective, she spoke again.
“It may be that InuYasha had a key as well,” Kanna said. “It makes sense. Maybe he double crossed her, and he has the jewel.”
More fury from Naraku followed, but Kanna was patient.
“All the airports and ports are covered,” Kanna said. “And every fence in Japan has been alerted to contact us should the jewel pass their way. The jewel is still here, either with him or Kikyou.”
Naraku barked an order at her, and hung up.

After the foot steps receded, Kikyou relaxed. To be sure the Yakuza kobun were not in hearing range of her, she waited a few minutes longer before moving from her hiding spot. Heartbeats kept the time, as she pictured them leaving the station and getting in their car. She closed her eyes, and took a deep breath as they drove away in her mind. Then she steeled herself and made a call…

Kagome was growing bored watching the computer with InuYasha and waiting for Kikyou's next move. She gave his back a quick rub and was about to get up and see what they could scrounge up for dinner. A red light started blinking on the screen and InuYasha got excited. He grabbed Kagome's arm and she quirked a questioning eyebrow at him.
“Watch the screen,” InuYasha said. “Kikyou is making a call.”
A phone number popped up in a box on the screen. InuYasha smiled grimly. It was just as he had for seen. It was too bad he could not hear their conversation, but he could imagine it. Kikyou would be cool as a frost in May, no matter how much heat Naraku radiated. But he was one of the few who knew her secrets, and just how much it cost her spiritually to even speak to him again. In the end, he did understand her need to kill him, even if he did not agree with her desire to do it alone.
“So she called him,” Kagome said.
“Yes, now we wait just long enough to be believable and then we make our move…”

The voice on the other end of the phone was the stuff of Kikyou's nightmares. She told him the place and time to meet her, and he chuckled darkly. She ignored his laugh, her face as still and cold as stone. All she wanted was confirmation he would be there. But that was not all he was about to give her…
“I've missed you, my love,” Naraku drawled. “No one is as sweet to torture as you. It is not just the jewel I want back…you are my jewel, my greatest treasure. The shikon no tama is just a symbol…”
Kikyou kept the shudder inside her, and it rattled through her bones. “Just meet me there, or I will make sure you never see the jewel again.”
Without giving him a chance to reply, she hung up. He would come for her….and this would be the last time he ever saw her. Kikyou slipped off the wall and fled, like a darkness deeper then the blackness of Naraku's heart.
