He Didn’t Hav’ta Be

She looked at the back of her masters head and had to smile at him, even if he didn’t see her smile of great fullness at him being what nobody else would be, she still smiled,
“What has brought you happiness that I haven’t given you?” He asked, not wanting anything to bring her happiness, but himself,
“You, my lord, you.” answered the little girl, forgetting that he could smell what she felt,
“How have I brought you happiness if I didn’t do anything?” He asked, not showing his confusion threw a blank face,
“You are here when you don’t hav’ta be, my lord.” She answered, trying not to giggle and failing.

They walked in peace for awhile, until they came upon a meadow with flowers everywhere you looked,
“My lord! Look at all the pretty flowers! May I go pick some for you, my lord?!” The little girl asked excited,
“Yes, you may.” He said in a flat tone, as he always did,
“Thank you, thank you, my lord!” She said as she ran off to pick flowers for her lord.

The dog-demon sat down with his back against a tree thinking ‘What did I do that I didn’t hav’ta do?’ he asked himself over and over again, until he slowly closed his eyes. The little girl ran up to her lord quietly, seeing him sleeping, ‘ He looks so nice sleeping, as if there wasn’t a care in the world.’ she smiled at him and sat next to him and sat down the flowers, forgetting them, she slowly picked his arm up and put it around her and laid her head against his chest, snuggling her head into his chest while closing her arms around him, and closing her eyes and falling asleep soundly.

He woke, realizing he had been asleep for awhile since the sun was slowly setting, he sniffed for her and found she was in no danger, in fact she was asleep on him, he looked at her while she slept, ‘What did she mean?’ he asked himself again,
“My lord?” The little girl asked sleepy,
“I’m here.” Was the reply,
“ Good daddy, I didn’t want you leaving me.” Said the little girl while falling back asleep.
‘Daddy?’ he asked himself.
The dog-demon sat there till the sun went down and still sat there, ‘daddy? She called me daddy, is that what she meant? That I was the only one that cared for her?’
She woke up filling the ground with her tiny hands, she opened her eyes fully when she didn’t fill her lord,
“Your awake.” He said looking at her,
“Oh, my lord! How are you this morning?” She asked,
“I’m fine, now eat.” He said while holding the cooked fish,
“Thank you, my lord!” She said in a happy voice, and took a bite out of the fish.
After she ate her fish and wiped her face with the back of her hand, she smiled at him,
“Why do you smile so?” he asked,
“Because you didn’t hav’ta be.” She answered simply,
“What didn’t I hav’ta be?” He asked trying not to get angry at her saying that and not something else,
“I can’t tell you that or you may get mad at me.” She said,
“You will tell me now.” He said calmly,
“Yes-yes, my lord.”She said not really frighten, just understanding that he wanted the answer she was afraid to tell,
“Your like a father to me.” She said in a quiet voice,
“A father? How have I shown myself as a father?” he asked now understanding he wasn’t dreaming when she said that,
“Well you take good care of me, and....... you didn’t hav’ta be, but you were.” she said a little louder.
He looked at her now and understood what she meant,
“I love you like a daughter, you know that Rin?” He asked,
“Yes, my lo- yes, papa.”She said while smiling at him.
Sesshoumaru smiled at Rin and took her hand in his and walked towards the rising sun.
