Head to the past, to save the future

A/N: Hey people, this is my second story for Inuyasha. For those of you who are wondering what happened to `The worth of a friend' don't worry, I'm still doing that as well. The idea for this story kept rolling around in my head, so I had to start drafting it at least so to clear some clutter in my bucket of a brain. I know this first chappie is a short one, and for a good reason. All the others will be based on ten pages or more. So enjoy and don't forget to RnR!

This chapter will be rated A. And I don't own Inu!

Prologue

“Come on…the swings are free!” The little blonde seven year old girl squealed to her two friends, before racing off to them.

“Are you sure that's the one Mamoru?” A red haired woman with black eyes asked sceptically as they stood watching the girl playing from the shadows of some trees.

The man called Mamoru snorted in reply. “Don't be stupid Hotaru, of course she is! The strength of her aura is proof of that.”

I'm not dim witted like you Hotaru, always questioning everything. I'm surprised a demon like you survived this long.

With a soft growl Hotaru turned away from the scene that was personally starting to turn her stomach, but she would never admit out loud, and looked off into space. “You do know what will happen eventually Mamoru? The rest of them cannot be saved, only her.”

With a growl of annoyance he turned from watching the girl fondly and stalked off further into the woods they were hiding in. “I know.”

But it will still pain me though, knowing that I will be causing the girl pain eventually.

Before another comment could be made the bracelets they both wore around their wrists flickered rapidly, and without another word they turned as one as a portal opened up before them, showing what looked like the inside of well furnished room before it disappeared after they entered.

Stopping herself in mid swing the little girl they had been watching looked over in their direction with a little frown on her face.

I wonder what that was?

One year later…

“Ok you three, kiss your father goodnight, it's bed time.”

Three groans of `not yet mommy' could be heard before the three youngsters ran towards their chuckling father and each kissed him on the cheek. Giggling after the kiss and tickle they each got back they raced each other up the stairs with their mother smiling and bringing up the rear.

Sitting in her room waiting for her mother to finish tucking her two younger brothers in bed the little girl suddenly got up from her bed and headed to her window, her deep brown eyes scanning the darkness outside as that feeling of being watched caused her to shiver and hold onto herself.

What's out there? Why won't it leave me alone!

Pulling the curtains close herself the little girl turned and dived under her bed covers, one hand reaching out instinctively for her favourite dolly and pulling it closer as her young mind raced over every other time she had had that same feeling, ever since that first time in the park with her friends when that warm feeling had skittered up her spine.

Every time a cold one would come and make me scared the warm one would come and chase it away. But it doesn't feel the same tonight.

“Oh, your already in bed sweetie!” Her mother said in surprise when she came in and found her curtains already closed and her little girl under the covers. Chuckling the older woman smoothed out the rumpled sheets and pulled the top down slightly to see her daughters face, but frowned when she saw the very worried look on her young angelic face. “What's the matter honey?”

Looking up at the concerned face of her mother the little girl reached out and gripped her larger hand tightly as it brushed hair out of her eyes.

“I'm scared mommy. I…I can feel bad things out there wanting to get me. But the good thing that always chases them away isn't there any more.”

Looking a little puzzled at her baby girls explanation her mother just brushed it off as her daughters active imagination, and leaned in to give her a good night kiss on the forehead. “Don't be silly, nothing bad can get you while your father and I are hear. Now go to sleep.”

Looking panicked and seeing that her mother didn't believe her she tried to keep hold of her hand as she pulled softly away. “But mommy…”

With a sigh of annoyance she managed to pull away from her clinging daughter and stood. “I don't know what's gotten into you young lady, but we'll talk about this in the morning. Now go to sleep.” Turning she quickly left, closing the bedroom door quietly behind her.

Sniffling and crying softly to herself the little girl pulled her dolly closer as she buried herself deeper under the covers.

But you might not be alive in the morning mommy!

Too distraught to go to sleep the little girl hoped and prayed her feelings were very wrong.

“Damn!” Mamoru growled in annoyance as the girls distressed and upset aura literally pushed his calming one away. Cursing under his breath he grabbed his coat and a few things.

“What's the matter Mamoru? Little mistress tugging your chain again.” Hotaru asked with an edge of a sneer in her voice as she continued to read her book.

For the past year since Mamoru had took to keeping a vigil over the girl Hotaru had pulled his chain about it again and again, not understanding why he didn't let the other demons that were after her kill the kid and be over with it.

He thinks of the brat as some sort of golden child. Even if she lives to see the final battle she won't win.

With the things he needed in a bag he stalked up to his partner and wrenched the book out of her hands, tossing it without a care into the fireplace she was sat in front of.

“Get ready…we are leaving.” Mamoru snarled as he got in her face before jerking away to prepare a portal.

Snorting silently to herself at his show of weakness Hotaru stood and slipped on her coat, then followed her partner as he stepped into the portal he'd opened up, and straight into the girls bedroom.

What's he doing? We're not supposed to be here.

Before she could even berate him for his brake in protocol he had already knelt by the bed and was talking soothingly to the little girl that was hiding there. With a snort she turned away from the sickening scene and looked at the bedroom door when she heard something strike the other side. Her eyebrows disappeared into her blood red bangs though when she saw the faint pink barrier over the door and the chair jammed under the door knob.

Did she do this? But she's what…only eight in human years! How can she.

Looking over her shoulder again she growled and saw that Mamoru was still trying to coax the child from under the bed.

“Please Linzi, you have to come with me.” Mamoru pleaded softly with the child as she clutched the toy in her arms tighter, the sounds of the demons in the house frightening her more and causing her aura to flare pink around her. “Linzi…just touch my hand, and you'll see I'm the one that's been keeping you safe this past year. Please?”

Sniffling and peeking up at the stranger with spiky grey hair and warm green eyes Linzi finally relented and reached for his outstretched hand, at the same time that her bed was suddenly and violently flung across the room. Seeing the angry woman reaching down for her Linzi screamed and held a small hand out to ward her off, her aura surging out of her through the appendage and slamming into the woman, knocking her off of her feet and onto her butt.

Snarling in rage at the careless move from his partner he scooped up the passed out child and backhanded Hotaru across the face when she was standing again, the blow cutting her lip and knocking her onto her back.

“You stupid bitch!” Mamoru growled threateningly at her as the blocked door started to shake and crack, the barrier now gone and not able to support it any more. “For this you can stay behind and clean up Hotaru. I am taking Linzi to somewhere safe. When I feel that you have suffered enough I will call for you.” Without another word Mamoru swiftly ripped open a space behind him, taking him where he didn't know, and just as quickly he and the girl were gone.

Rising slowly to her feet as the anger and rage at him rose within her Hotaru ignored the door behind her as it finally gave in. With a roar so loud that it shook the house she let the beast within her loose.

If anyone had been up at that hour in the neigh-boroughing homes they would have seen one house go up suddenly in flames, and heard the death cries of the demons and anyone else alive trapped inside.

Days later…

Watching the news reports on the tv in front of him Mamoru let out an angry sigh and let his head rest on one hand.

Hotaru…why'd you have to go that far? Ever since I've started protecting this girl all you've done is snipe at me and give me back talk. Are you jealous, is that it? Or do you have so little faith in me and my beliefs that you just don't care what you say to me any more. You used to be some one I could trust Hotaru, someone I'd gladly have at my back in any battle and claim as a friend. But now…now I'm not so sure of your loyalty.

“Mamoru…are you ok?”

Turning his attention from the tv and the thoughts in his head he smiled a genuine smile at the concerned look on the girls face as she came to sit beside him on the beaten up sofa.

Little Linzi…you've come so far in only a few days. Your trust in me I do not deserve I think. But I will make it up to you, what you've been through.

Pulling her gently into the warm circle of his arms Mamoru hugged her to him and breathed deeply of her calming vanilla and lavender scent, which always served to relax him. “I'm fine little one. Just plotting what we should do next. I believe I have angered many of my people, by revealing myself to you. But…you are too precious to be left to die.”

Returning his hug Linzi nodded her head in reply. “But if this demon is waking up and breaking the seals on him then I have to live and fight him, with the others you told me about.”

Chuckling Mamoru pulled back to look at her. “I keep forgetting how intelligent you can be sometimes Linzi. But yes, that is one way to put it.”

Giggling Linzi smiled and snuggled up to him. “So where are we going to next then?”

“A very good friend of mine. He is a powerful priest called Yuudai, as one of his ancestors helped in sealing Naraku in the first place. We can trust him to keep us hidden and safe until the time comes. He also has links to the Higurashi shrine as well as a few other loyal friends that will help in your training. But I must warn you again little one, it will be hard.”

With a weary sigh Linzi squeezed him where her small arms were wrapped around his waist. “I know it will be. It's something that has to be done right?”

Nodding in reply Mamoru held her closer as he watched the sun setting through the windows, and once again wondered not for the first time how this child could act so sagely sometimes.

As long as your by my side Linzi, I can get through this mess we're in.

The following years flew by for the two as they lived with Yuudai and trained. Linzi learning all that she could about her growing miko powers and how to use them, and Mamoru learned that not all was lost as he started to dote on the girl like she was his own daughter.

When her sixteenth birthday came closer Mamoru quickly realised it was time to leave his dear friends home for that of the Higurashi's, and wondered again how the hell was he to explain themselves to the hanyou and miko that lived there.

Oh well, time will tell.
