Chapter 2
The first thing that registered in Linzi's sore head, was the sound of birds singing outside her shut window, and the harsh glare of sunlight as it came in through the thin curtains. Groaning from the torture the girl rolled over and buried herself under her covers and nearly fell back asleep, until a soft amused chuckle reached her ears, one she knew all too well.
“Daaaadddd!” Linzi groan groggily, causing the man to laugh a little louder. “What are you doing in my room, at this hour?”
Putting a hand over his mouth to contain his rising mirth Mamoru shook his head at the girl and moved closer to the side of her futon. Grabbing the top of the quilt he pulled it down until he could see her scrunched up face, and the displeased glare through the small opening in her left eye.
“Come now little one, it's nearly eleven in the morning. Time to get up lazy bones!” With that last statement he jumped to his feet and took her cover with him, causing her to squeak a little too much like a surprised mouse, before she growled back at him and leapt to her feet, only to fall straight back down again. On reflex her father grabbed her around the waist to steady her, and lowered her to sit on the futon.
“Ug…my head hurts!” Linzi moaned hoarsely as she clutched it, wishing the pounding in her skull would go away, very quickly.
Fuck! I would have thought she was recovered from the vision by now. Mamoru thought worriedly, then like he always did when she had been ill before he held her close and buried his nose in her neck, only to stiffen when one scent rang loud and clear. Oh no…her demon scent is becoming more pronounced. It has gotten stronger overnight, no wonder her head hurts.
Realising that she also probably didn't remember anything of the night before yet, where on other occasions she would have talked to him about what she'd seen as soon as she woke, Mamoru laid her gently back down and covered her again with the discarded quilt. Wiping the sweat from her head he kissed her there and told her to sleep, and when he was sure her breathing had evened out he quickly stood and left her room. As he passed the other girls door another scent literally hit him right between the eyes, and chuckling and shaking his head Mamoru made his way down the stairs and to the kitchen, where he could here Mrs Higurashi pottering about.
Its about damn time the runt took the girl as his mate. It was probably what I told them last night that got the two to finally realise the need to tell each other how they feel. Inuyasha is lucky Kagome isn't in heat right now. Hummmm, I'd better pull the boy aside and have a man to man talk with him. Can't leave it to that imbecile Sesshoumaru to tell him what he needs to know.
“Good morning Mamoru-san. I hoped you slept well.” Mama greeted warmly, before pulling a large tray of bacon, eggs and other fried goodies from the oven where they were keeping warm, and started to fill up a plate on the counter. Putting the tray away she placed the plate of food in front of him, where a cup of tea was already waiting.
“Thank you Naomi. Your kindness I do not deserve after the harsh blow I gave you yesterday with the sad news I brought.” Mamoru replied guiltily as he stared at his food.
Shaking her head Naomi sat across from him and patted one of his hands, before she wrapped them both around her own drink. “Nonsense Mamoru-san! If you had not come and told us what was going to happen, then it would have eventually happened, and I would have lost my only daughter and son-in-law.”
Snapping his eyes to hers the startled demon was shocked to see a mirthful smile on her face and an odd twinkle in her kind eyes. “You…know then, that they are mates now?”
Chuckling Naomi smiled. “I know how much they love each other. And if the noises I heard last night were any indication then all I can say it's about time!” Oh, and grandchildren with little cute dog ears! Kagome, Inuyasha, I'm so proud of you.
“You are a strange woman Naomi. You are not mad they have mated, without your consent?”
“What is there to protest about? I think of Inuyasha as if he were my own son, and love him like one too. I am just so happy they are finally together, I could cry. They have been through so much this past year. I pray with all my soul that they are victorious, and all of their friends come through alive and well.”
Smiling Mamoru reached across and took Naomi's hand, giving it a friendly squeeze. “You are a very kind and truthful woman Naomi. I can see you clearly in your daughter.” Remembering something the demon sighed and leaned back in his chair, picked up his chopsticks and began to eat. “Linzi is not well at the moment. I fear that the vision attack she had last night has forced her demon half to strengthen. I can now smell it slightly mingled in with her own scent, where as before I could only detect it if she was in a deep sleep. I am stumped in what to do. Would you mind if I used your phone after breakfast, I have someone I need to call.”
“No, go right ahead Mamoru-san. And do not worry too much about Linzi-Ema. She is a strong young woman, and will come through.” Naomi reassured him, before she left to finish her chores.
Once breakfast was eaten Mamoru headed for the phone near the front door and first called Yuudai, to inform him that they were here and what had happened. Once he had told all of last nights events Mamoru informed him of the change in Linzi.
“Do you still have the necklace and the other things I had commissioned for her Mamoru?” Yuudai asked on the other end, as the sound of papers shuffling could be heard.
“Yes I do. I was hoping I would not have to put the necklace on her Yuudai, but if she has another violent attack like last night or worse then her two sides will really start fighting. I do not wish for her to loose control. She's come so far…”
“It will not come to that my friend. Show her the necklace and explain it to her, then once in the feudal era go find the sword smith Totosai, he should be able to help you. And by the way, remember to keep her away from the Taiyoukai. His aura is extremely strong, and even with the seal in the necklace on her person her demon could rise. Until she can control it she is not to be left alone or be in the presence of the demon lord, got it?”
“I know, I know Yuudai! This is the hundredth time you've told me since I found out from Hotaru. Speaking of which, has she been round?”
Yuudai snorted down the phone. “Yeah she has. That woman has a very mean temper Mamoru. How you put up with her all those years before Linzi came along is beyond me. That's another thing. Are you really going to take her with you? She has changed an awful lot since the last time you saw her. I would not trust her to take out the trash.”
Mamoru couldn't help but laugh at that one and silently agreed with his old friend. “I know that Yuudai. But I need all the able handed people I can get. She is strong, and will do as she's told if she does not wish for another beating. It is a shame I cannot leave Linzi with Sesshoumaru when I leave for ancient England, but I don't know yet if I should explain the circumstances to that thick headed mongrel.”
“That dog is very intelligent Mamoru, he will become suspicious of Linzi as soon as he scents her, if her demon is rising like you say. Speaking of which, Hotaru was wrong in her assumptions when she looked at the girls family tree. Her ancestors weren't demons.”
Frowning Mamoru scratched at the back of his neck and leant against the wall, catching a glimpse of Naomi out of the corner of his eye as she went into the living room. “Not demons? Then what Yuudai, she's certainly not just human.”
“You are not going to believe this Mamoru. You know that study I was doing on heavenly beings a while ago. Well when I had a look at the scroll what Hotaru brought with her one name popped out. Queen Lucretia. She was an angel of such powers that she had control over every thing, and I mean every thing Mamoru. In the end she got too powerful, so the gods ordered her to either take her own life, or split her powers into her children. She choose the later. I looked a little deeper and I found that every hundred and fifty years or so another like Queen Lucretia would be born and the cycle would continue.”
With an impatient growl Mamoru finally lost his nerve. “Spit it out Yuudai. What's this Queen Lucretia have to do with the demonic scent I'm picking up from Linzi?”
“One of Queen Lucretia's known powers were that she could make herself appear like a demon, with scent and aura, while in truth she was an angel. Her rebirth is over due Mamoru, and I think she has choosen Linzi as the one.”
Slumping against the wall the shaken demon ran a hand through his spiky hair, and even ignored the approaching hanyou as he spoke. “So not only is she the reincarnation of Midoriko, but also this Queen Lucretia? And your absolutely sure about this Yuudai. Because if your not…”
“Have I ever led you to believe otherwise Mamoru? I feel wounded that you think little of the hard work I put into researching this.” Yuudai joked, then went on. “You know me, I go over every thing with a fine tooth comb before I even tell you. I bet my life on this Mamoru. Both souls of Midoriko and Lucretia are right now residing in Linzi, and are fighting for control. Linzi will have her work cut out, but I'd advise her to meditate, a lot, and try to get the two to a truce. It's the only way she'll get her powers back in control.” There was a long pause before Yuudai came back on the phone again. “I've got to go Mamoru, something urgent came up. I will send everything I have to the Higurashi shrine for you to look over. Bye!”
Before Mamoru could utter another word the phone line went silent, leaving behind only the ringing tone. With a heavy sigh the ruffled demon replaced the phone and looked at a patiently waiting Inuyasha, as he stood there gazing intently back at him.
“Something come up old man?” Inuyasha asked in a low voice, so his mate and her mother wouldn't hear in the living room.
“No, not really. It complicates things, but actually its made my job a little easier. Looks like I won't need to go to ancient England, I already know what Linzi's other half is.”
An angel…how can that be? It makes even my head hurt just thinking about it.
“Well, at least that's one less thing to worry about.” Inuyasha counted as he turned and headed for the kitchen, where his breakfast was ready and waiting. “Will Linzi be well enough to travel come tomorrow morning?”
“I will let you know.” Mamoru informed, then added quickly as he remembered something. “Meet me under Goshinboku after you've had your breakfast, there is something that I need to discuss with you, and only you.”
Turning to the phone again Mamoru made one last call, and this one he was not looking forward too.
~*~*~
While Linzi slept on an inner battle was raging within her soul, as Queen Lucretia and Midoriko tried to take control.
(A/N: Queen Lucretia talking, Midoriko talking, Linzi talking, Linzi thinking.)
Miko…why do you continue with this needless fight? I am your better, in every sense of the word. With my power alone Linzi will be able to decimate the vile beast called Naraku. Yet you continue to defy me. Why?
Hello…aren't you guys even listening to me?
You do not understand the greatness and severity of the fight that looms over us all. You may have immense powers, I admit that, but you are no miko. Yours alone will not be enough.
AND NEITHER WILL YOURS!!
There, that got their attention!
What do you mean little one?
What I mean is…I feel that separately, either of your powers will not be enough to slay Naraku. I remember the vision I had when I first met Kagome and Inuyasha, and in that I could feel, in the core of my being, how utterly evil that creature is. The way he used and destroyed the boy, Kohaku, is just proof of that. I need both of you to work together, with me and the others. I…I don't want to lose another family. My heart could not bare the grief.
Is this your wish Linzi?
You are absolutely sure little one. Your road ahead will be a hard and dangerous one. Our powers combined will be taxing to your human body, I fear it will not take.
Then what do you suggest? I can feel how great your powers are Queen Lucretia. Father said as you got more persistent in taking control that I started to smell and sense like a demon. Could you not alter my body to take the powers that will house it? That should not be hard for someone like you.
Hehehe, you amuse me child, but you are right in a way. Though you will house angelic and miko's powers, your body will be neither an angels or human. The strongest demonic beings I know that will be able to take the strain are the Inuyoukai. So I grant your wish. And for what it is worth…I am sorry, for causing you any pain.
A good choice. But remember Linzi that this will be so much harder than what you first thought. Other demons will come seeking your power, hoping to take you as a mate, and as a female Inuyoukai you will have to prove yourself time and again. Will you be able to do this child?
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
As Linzi became more conscious this one word was heard leaving her lips.
~*~*~
With a small groan Linzi's body was finally allowed free from her long sleep, and blinking her eyes to clear them she realised that her room was dark and she could sense a familiar, warm demonic aura sitting across from her futon. Turning her head in that direction she could clearly make out the form of her father as he leant against a far wall, one arm resting on a upraised knee while the other laid at his side, and his head was tucked against his chest. She could even make out his light snores. Stifling her amused giggles Linzi sat up slowly, ready for another dizzy spell to hit her, but sighed silently in relief when none came.
Wait a minute…Queen Lucretia and Midoriko…I remember the talk I had with them. Have they really reconciled and are now working together? And am I really a demon now?
I can hear you thoughts little one. Do you doubt my promise? Why not go look in the mirror, and see for yourself.
Ack! Don't I get a minutes peace!
We are all apart of you Linzi, remember that. Though with training you will be able to keep our voices away if you wish.
Ok, ok. I'll go find a mirror.
Getting silently to her feet, least she wake her father, Linzi crept out the door and down to the bathroom, but stopped when an unfamiliar presence outside caught her attention.
I'll go look later. First things first.
Closing the bathroom door behind her Linzi made her first mistake of the day, turning the light on. Slapping a hand over her stunned eyes she leant against the door behind her until the searing pain left.
Ug…stupid me. I must be a demon now, if it hurts this much.
Peeking through her fingers at the harsh glare around her she slowly made her way to the mirror above the sink, her hand dropping from her face as her vision quickly started to adjust. When she first looked into the mirror she let out a gasp of surprise and wonder as both hands flew up to touch her face.
Oh, my, GOD!
Her facial structure still looked somewhat the same, though instead of looking cute as her father would say to her the roundness of her face screamed voluptuous. Even though her blonde locks had only lightened to a nearly white blonde the length and thickness of it made her frown in distaste, and her fingers itched to get a hold of a pair of scissors.
That's the first thing I'm gonna do, get a hair cut.
Her once deep brown eyes were the deepest gold she had seen, nearly a bronze she thought, unlike Inuyasha's honeyed gold. And the only markings she could see on her face was the small golden star in between her brows. Pushing a lock of hair behind her ear she found that it was elfin in appearance and her body shivered and a light blush spread across her cheeks when she brushed them lightly with a finger.
Ooohhh, erogenous zone! Hehehe.
Grinning at her reflection she also noticed that in her mouth she had four dainty looking fangs, the top two being larger than the bottom. Realising her clothes were in the way of the rest of her inspection she quickly stripped out of them and gasped again at what she saw. On her shoulders and curving over her collarbones were golden slashes, one on each side, and again over her hips bones, her wrists and upper thighs.
Bitchin! Better than any tattoo I've ever seen. Dad's gonna freak when he sees this.
Pulling her hair over one shoulder Linzi turned her back to the mirror in search of more marks, and her eyebrows disappeared into her bangs when she found golden angel wings on her back over each shoulder blade, the slashes there meeting and nearly touching them.
That's so odd. Were you making a statement here Lucretia?
Hearing no reply Linzi just shrugged her head, thinking it was typical that when she wanted to talk to the others they didn't answer, and decided that while she was here she might as well have a shower. Twenty minutes later she exited the bathroom to a still silent house. Wondering what time it was Linzi headed down the stairs and to the kitchen, her eyes more prepared this time when she turned the light on before looking at the clock on the wall as she headed further into the room.
1:36am. That all! Dad must have only just come to bed then. I've been out since I woke up briefly this morning. Wow, that's a record even for me.
Hoping the Higurashi's wouldn't mind her rummaging through their fridge her right hand had just grasped the handle when the new aura she picked up earlier caught her attention again. Quickly realising that whomever it belonged to was doing it on purpose Linzi snorted lightly to herself and decided to let it wait.
I'm starved! Whoever the bloody hell it is can wait till I've got food coming out of my ears.
Finding the top of the fridge full of those bento boxes she picked one at random and opened it, closing the fridge door behind her as she headed for the table. Realising she didn't have chopsticks and not really wanting to get up Linzi just shrugged her shoulders and used her fingers as she quickly ate the rice, sushi, and other vegetables that were in there. Half an hour later she sat back in her seat with three now empty bento boxes in front of her, and a full stomach, which she gently patted.
I'll have to thank Mrs Higurashi for that. Better wash up.
Finished with the wash up and deciding that whoever was outside had waited long enough she headed for the back door at the bottom of the stairs. Peering outside from the open doorway she carefully looked around with her new enhanced night vision, then took a whiff.
Ew! Smells like a whorehouse.
Leaving the door open Linzi followed her nose as another pulse of the unfamiliar aura made itself known to her right, and turning her head in that direction she could tell it was coming from the shadows around the well house.
“I know your there. Come out from behind the well house right now!” Linzi demanded, tiring of this cat and mouse game very quickly as she realised she was still very tired.
Crap! I slept most of the day away. Is this what they meant that it would still be hard for me. I hope bloody not.
“Kukuku, your senses have improved some little girl, since the last time we met.” Came a deep purring feminine voice, which she thought was coming from the direction of the well house, but with a gasp of alarm she realised it was coming from above her. “But you are still weak, compared to me!”
Leaping out of the way with seconds to spare her eyes widened to beyond their limits as there where she once had stood was a demon woman with long blood red hair and black emotionless eyes, who wore all black leather. From boots to pants to the boob top that covered her chest.
Yep, definitely a whore.
Looking at her more closely she gasped as a very old memory slipped past her eyes, of the same woman standing over her only dressed in a long red trench coat.
“You…I remember you…from that night Mamoru came to get me. Your Hotaru, aren't you?” Linzi asked as her guard went into uber mode. When the other demon stepped forward Linzi kept her distance.
“And here I thought that little scare had erased your memory of that.” Hotaru joked offhandedly as she studied her claws of one hand. “Oh well, never mind eh. But by the looks and feel of things I'd say that old coot Yuudai was wrong. Looks like your demon side finally took over eh, girly? And an Inu too, by the smell of thinks. Heh, it suits you.”
Some how I have the feeling the last bit was said sarcastically.
“Linzi, what are you doing out here at this time? You should be in bed.”
Looking away from the demoness in front of her Linzi smiled as her father stood in the open doorway, right behind where Hotaru stood. As if realising who she was standing in front of Hotaru turned and gave a slight bow to him.
“It has been awhile Mamoru, since last I talked to you, and longer still since the last time we met.” Hotaru began, totally forgetting about the young girl behind her. “Call me when your ready to leave, I will be around.” And in a flash Hotaru had disappeared, leaving behind the smell of fire.
“Linzi…”
Looking at her father she smiled sheepishly and gave him a twirl. “So…what do you think Dad? Do I still look pretty?”
Walking up to her slowly Mamoru could still see and smell it was her, but could also smell the scents of demon, miko and something very faint but couldn't place. Eyes widening in realisation he choked on his happy tears and pulled her into a crushing hug.
“Linzi…oh little one. You did it. You got them to balance out!” Burying his face in her near white hair he breathed deeply of her still calming vanilla and lavender scent that had a hint a something airy and spicy added to it. “I'm so proud.”
Returning the hug eagerly Linzi finally let her happy tears go before pulling away. Smiling up at him she led him back into the house by the hand. “Come on dad, I've got to show you my markings. There so cool!”
Laughing at her happy and eager face Mamoru could do nothing but follow her inside, and spent the next several hours answering any questions she asked. One in particular had him blushing from head to toe, and reminded him of the conversation he'd had with Inuyasha earlier that day.
FLASHBACK
“So what do you want to talk about old man?” Inuyasha grumbled, really not wanting to be here right now as he looked off in the direction of Kagome's room, where his keen ears could pick her up as she moved around.
“I know you and the miko are now mates.” Mamoru started, raising his hand again like the night before to silence the interruptions that he could see was coming. “Normally you'd have this conversation with your brother Sesshoumaru, but personally I don't see him doing this, so you got me instead.”
“How about we just don't have this conversation then.” Inuyasha sneered, but quickly shut up at the glare from the old man.
“Look, I'll cut quickly to what I'm getting at. You are newly mated and will need your mate more than ever. You will want to rut with her every chance you can get. You are still young so have no control over the potency of your seed, and Kagome will be coming into heat in a few more weeks too. At those times you will be extremely protective of her. If you do not want to pup her too soon then I suggest you avoid her at these times, if you have the will power too, which I highly doubt. I've known full demons who could not keep their hands off of their mates when they were in heat, be they demon or human.”
“There's actually demons mated to humans in this time?” Inuyasha asked in wonder, while his face continued to flame and match the colour of his fire rat.
“Yes, there are many. But we are getting off of the subject here. I know in this time there is methods of birth control for both women and men, and I would've suggested that Kagome take some of them, but with her miko powers they would instantly make them void and would be useless. But I do have something that you can use Inuyasha.” Reaching into the folds of the black haori he now permanently wore along with matching hakama and a green obi that matched his eyes Mamoru pulled out a bulging wrapped package. Opening it carefully he let the boy see the small plastic squares in the bottom of the bag. “These are called condoms Inuyasha. Human men use them to catch their seed as it leaves their bodies when they mate, to stop the females from being pupped. But these are stronger and bigger than the normal ones the humans use. I know a demon doctor who makes these and had him send me a box. The rest are in the house. You can take these with you when we go. Explain them to Kagome and have her look after them.” Rising to his feet Mamoru smiled warmly down at the lad and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “You are a strong man, and will do the miko good. If you have any questions I am here.” Without another word he headed back into the house, to check on Linzi again.
END FLASHBACK
“Is it true then dad, that because of my powers and being a full demon I'll have other demons seeking me out for a mate?” Linzi asked as she looked down at her twiddling fingers.
Coughing to clear his throat Mamoru let out a heavy sigh. “Yes, that is true. Though I guess we are timing it badly by going to the feudal era in the middle of spring. It will be mating season for all, though you will not experience your first heat for a good few years yet, but with me and Hotaru both guarding you you'll be fine. I will continue to train you though, and help you think more like a demon. Don't worry though, you'll never forget your human side, it is still there, even if you are a full demon.”
I just hope to all the gods that Sesshoumaru stays away. Now that I don't have to worry about her demon side being forced to rise because of his strong aura I'll have to worry about him trying to take her as his mate. Though with how emotionally constipated he is I'll be very surprised if he even feels the effects of mating season. Hm, might be funny to see the great demon lord Sesshoumaru succumbing to that.
“Earth to dad!” Linzi called, waving one hand in front of his spaced out face. Getting no response she flicked her finger at the tip of his nose, hard, and laughed at his yowl of pain.
“OW! What the hell was that for?” Mamoru growled as he rubbed his abused nose.
“You weren't paying attention. What were you thinking about dad? Nothing dirty I hope.” Linzi joked and creased up in another round of giggles.
“Humph!” Was his reply, and would have said something else if Naomi hadn't chosen then to walk in.
“Oh my!” Naomi breathed in shock at seeing the two sitting in the dark in the living room. Recognising Linzi straight away, even with the changes the older woman smiled warmly and gave the girl a hug. “I'm so glad you are awake and well. Your father was very worried about you, as was the rest of us.”
Linzi returned the hug and smile. “So am I Mrs Higurashi. I hope you didn't mind, I ate three of the boxes in the fridge. They were lovely.”
Chuckling Naomi just smiled and stroked her hair, which she noted had grown down to the girls knees. “I don't mind at all dear, that's what they are for. I can always make some more.”
Nodding her head Linzi suddenly had an idea as she looked at all the long hair that splayed around her. “Could you…can you cut my hair for me…please!”
Running her hands through the softness of it Naomi looked to her father, who had a stricken look upon his face. “Maybe you should ask your father first.” Excusing herself to leave them alone again Naomi headed to the kitchen to start making breakfast for the rest of the family.
“Why would you want to do such a thing?” Mamoru asked aghast, remembering when she had been growing up that she always got the female servants at Yuudai's to cut her hair to just above her shoulders, even at the insistence from him that she leave it be. But now that she was a full demon the thought of her even doing it now made him sick.
Wait…she doesn't know what the long hair means. I will have to tell her.
“You know why dad. My mom always liked me with short hair, said it drew more attention to my cute face. And long hair always gets in the way when I fight.” Linzi whined.
“Linzi-Ema, there is something important you must know. The length of a demons hair, especially Inu's, shows to others their status, power rank and so forth. To have it cut, be it accidentally or intentionally, is a great disgrace. And I must add little one, that you are far from cute now.”
Blinking her eyes slowly at her father she looked him straight in the face, wondering if this was some lie to keep the hair where it was, but then realised that since the first day she'd been with him Mamoru had never ever lied to her in any sort of way. With a heavy defeated sigh Linzi nodded her head and for the first time since she'd been having her hair regularly cut she gave in to his demands.
“Ok dad, I won't get it cut.” With a wicked grin and gleam in her eyes she added. “But you'll have to style it for me every day.”
With a barking laugh Mamoru agreed. He was silently glad for that offer though, he'd always loved playing with the girls hair in the past when she was asleep.
I hope no one else finds out about my little secret.
