“You have the right to remain silent.”
The table felt cool beneath her fingers, the air rushing along her skin evaporating the sheen of sweat and raising the hair on her arms.
“Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”
Squinting under the bright florescent lights, she watched her hands quake, the very breathe in her lungs seem to rattle as her body stiffened.
“You have the right to an attorney.”
The fear was palpable; it seemed to waft off her skin. The darkened glass loomed ahead of her, the shapes behind it hidden as they watched her.
“If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you at interrogation time and at court.”
They waited and watched for the movement, the look.
“Do you understand the rights I have just read to you? With these rights in mind, do you wish to speak with me?”
She struggled to focus her vision, to move her heavy tongue in a head clouded with foggy thoughts. The betrayal was complete. They stood outside that secret window waiting to hear their own acquittal, ready to eye her vacant face as the sacrificial lamb was led away to pay for their crimes. The fear, the anger, the tears threatened to mute her.
But this would not be over so easily.

ATTORNEY'S LOVER CHARGED WITH MURDER

The 26-year-old lover of murdered prosecutor Hiro Ogata was charged with his death Tuesday after months of false leads, according to the New York Police Department.
Kagome Higurashi, a New York News reporter, was taken into custody after police received an anonymous tip leading them to search her home, said Lt. Ken Martin. The murder weapon, a handgun, was found underneath the couch along with other undisclosed evidence. Fingerprints on the weapon were identified as Higurashi's, Martin said.
Ogata was found shot to death March 14 in his apartment by his brother only days after winning a conviction against Naraku Inoue, the son of a well-known New York family. Police initially suspected the family and investigated Mob ties, but months of following dead-end leads left the department with a cold case. The murder weapon was never found.
Amid public outcry over the unsolved death of a high-profile assistant district attorney, police turned the focus to Ogata's private life and previous cases. It was not until an anonymous note was delivered to the police department that detectives received a break in the case. The tip implemented Ogata's lover and led to her eventual arrest. No information about motive has been released.
