Chapter 26

“Why is it our job to pick this guy up anyways?” Kagome growled loudly at the question her mate was asking her. It was the fifth time in the last twenty minutes the hanyou complained about having to go to the airport to pick up a guest of Seiyas. She’d explained it to him each time that it was meant to be a surprise, and that he wasn’t supposed to know that the person was coming. Digging in his ear Inuyasha pouted as he said, “Fine, I’ll stop asking you since it seems to piss you off so much.”

Apparently he took the silence as the code for, “Ask me again and you’ll be sat into next week.” Looking at her mate, Kagome plastered a smile to her face as she said, “Good, but I’ll tell you one more time. The person we’re picking up is Seis cousin, Jessy. He’s a priest for the Catholic Church and is apparently a very important figure in it’s international dealings.” Flicking away a piece of earwax, Inuyasha looked at the terminal as some people started to exit it. Snorting apathetically he asked, “So what’s this guy look like? I mean since he’s so important, will he be dressed like those rich actor people we see on the television?”

Leaning back against the wall, Kagome sighed before saying, “He’ll be dressed in all black and look a lot like Seiya, except instead of looking Japanese, he looks like a white person.” Looking to Kagome the hanyou asked, “What’s a white person?” Covering her mouth Kagome said, “It just means that he’ll look a lot different than most of the people here.” Turning his gaze to the crowd, Inuyasha saw lots of different people. Some were brown, some had coal like skin, others had skin like his and Kagomes except a bit darker. Groaning loudly he said, “Kagome a lot of people look different than us! You find him cuz I can’t.”

Glaring at her mate, she watched him adjust his ball cap as she said, “Jessy’s name is Mizutani, but the weirdest thing about him being Seis cousin is that they may as well be brothers since Jessy’s dad is Roberts brother, and his aunt is Seiyas moms sister.” Straining his mind, Inuyasha said, “Wait so your saying this guys parents are the siblings of Seiyas parents?” Nodding Kagome said, “That’s pretty much the gist of it. His dad’s a big demon expert, so Jess is probably pretty keen at detecting them.” Smirking Inuyashas gaze was aimed at the terminal instead of his mate.

Following his gaze, Kagome first saw a pair of brown dress shoes, then a pair of blue slacks, then a black tee-shirt with a picture of blood and a hammer on it with the words, “Kill ‘em All,” running across the top. Finally her gaze fell upon a pair of brown eyes and hair, as well as a huge grin on the mans face. Smiling happily she ran up and hugged the guy shouting, “Jessy!!” Hugging her back, the priest pulled her in saying, “Kagome, it’s been a couple years.” Not knowing what the guy had just said, Inuyasha asked Kagome, “What did he say to you?!”

Chuckling nervously Jessy extended his hand as he said, in fluent Japanese, “Sorry, names Mizutani Jessy.” Taking the hand and bowing, Inuyasha said, “Inuyasha Taisho, I’m a friend of your cousins.” Chuckling, the man took his hand back as he said, “Quite a firm grip for a half breed, Inu. I take it your mom’s a human.” Taken aback Inuyasha said, “Uhhh how’d you guess what I was? I mean is it that obvious?”

Laughing loudly, the priest shook his head as he said, “We’ll discuss that later. Right now I gotta get to baggage claim since I came on a family plane, I don’t have to wait like the rest of these saps.” Shaking her head at the cockiness of her friend, Kagome smacked his head before saying, “Shut up and just take us there. And there better not be a lot cuz my car isn’t exactly big.” Rubbing his head, Jessy led the way to the baggage area while Inuyasha chuckled silently at not being the one getting yelled at for once.

Upon there arrival, Jessy pointed at a lone middle aged man standing next to a trolley with three bags on it. Cheering happily, Kagome said, “Thank you!! It’ll all fit in the trunk!” Rolling his eyes at the girls over zealous attitude, Inuyasha said, “What’s this guys job?” Stepping forward, Jess shook the guys hand and whispered something into his ear. Laughing at the statement he clasped the priest on the shoulder before heading off in another direction. Taking the trolley, Jess headed back to his friends with an odd smile on his face.

Unsure of what to make of it Inuyashas nose twitched at something coming from one of the bags. Bending down he sniffed at the bottom bag, tapped it and asked, “Why is this one made of plastic?” Leaning against the trolley, Jess flicked the cap before saying, “Can’t tell you. It’s important for my work and it may give me away.” Sneezing loudly Inuyasha backed away from it saying, “That thing ain’t right. There’s something inside of it that’s making my nose act up.” Rolling her eyes, Kagome looked up at her friend as she asked, “Did you bless that thing or something?”

Shrugging, Jessy began to head towards the garage when he realized that he had no clue as to where the car was parked. Scratching his head embarrassingly, he turned to his ride and asked, “Where’d you park?” Stomping forward, Kagome grabbed him by the ear and began to drag him towards the car while Inuyasha was left to push the cart along in their wake. It took only a few minutes to get there, but it took a few extra minutes to evenly distribute the weight that was placed in the back of the vehicle. Once that was done, the three hopped into the car and sped off towards Seis home.

From the back seat, Jess stared out the window as he asked, “So which way is it to Seiyas apartment?” Looking in the rear view mirror, Kagome smirked as she said, “Actually, Seiya moved into a house a few weeks ago. He’s in the suburbs located half an hour from here. Granted it’s not that great a place to live around, but at least the planes fly away from his house instead of over it.”

Snorting a laugh, Jess looked at the front of the car and asked, “So, I take it by Inuyashas behavior earlier that you two are mated, correct?” Pulling his hat over his eyes the hanyou said, “Damn straight we are, ‘course we’ll be getting married soon since she just started her job at one of those hospital things and moved out of her moms house.” Kagomes face burned a bright red from the comment as she turned off the highway.

Sitting back, Jess asked, “So what’s my cousin up to? He done with school yet?” Thinking for a moment, Kagome strained her mind as she said, “He had a small accident at one point so he’s gotta wait til next semester to finish all of the required exams to get out of there.” Snickering, Jess rolled down his window to breathe in some fresh air as he said, “As long as he gets the hell out of there and get on with that directing shit or whatever he wants to do. He got a girlfriend yet?” The question caught the two in the front completely off guard as Inuyasha nervously said, “Not really, there’s someone in the picture, and it is getting kinda serious.”

Not saying anything, Jessy asked, “You guys aren’t having any pups yet are ya?” Almost losing control of the car, Kagome struggled to get it under control while the two men bounced around there seats until the girl got it stable and shouted, “NO WE”RE NOT EXPECTING SO MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!” Clinging to the seat like a frightened cat, Jessy said, “Okay, it was a joke just don’t kill us yet. I got some business to take care of while I’m here.” Getting a demon like face, Kagome stared at him for a minute before the priest cowered like a frightened puppy until she deemed the road worth of her attention.

Arriving at the house alive, Inuyasha and Jessy headed directly for the trunk to get away from the girl. Walking towards the dwelling, Kagome admired Seis taste in houses. Granted she admired it since the house was of the same exact design as her mothers and was pretty much set up the same way, right down to the bathrooms and laundry. It’d only taken a few days for them to move all of the stuff into it, and with the money he’d gotten from pawning off some of the jewels that Sesshomaru had given him, which according to the young man set him up for life since he’d invested in almost every type of stock that was guaranteed to turn a profit. Along with a couple of high interest savings bonds and accounts, Sei was sitting pretty.

But in true, Seiya fashion he didn’t over spend, all he did was set up a room for Rin, along with making sure that there was an extra bedroom set up for company. Well he did go a little over board on new beds, sheets, and pillows but other than that the house was a lot like his apartment, simple, cozy, and welcoming. When the guys finally dragged the luggage to the front door, Kagome reached up and knocked.

Waiting the group, stared at the door for a minute until Jessy pounded on it. Continuing there wait, Jess said, “He normally gets it by now. What’s taking so long?” Reaching into her pocket, Kagome pulled out an extra key and unlocked the door. Stepping in, the men set the bags in the living room before the sound of foot steps caught there ears. Shrugging it off as his cousin, Jess was willing to ignore it until he felt a slight stinging sensation on his chest.

“Shit.” Looking at her friend, Kagome was about to ask what the problem was when out of nowhere she saw a gun in the priests hands. Worrying for the safety of the group, Kagome asked, “What the heck are you doing?” Looking to the priests hands, Inuyasha knew that what he was holding was a dangerous thing. Reaching out, Inuyasha grabbed his shoulder and said, “Put that away you moron.” Knocking the hanyou away, Jess said, “Shut up! There’s somebody besides Seiya here a strong demon.”

Sniffing, Inuyasha thought, Shit! He’s sensing Sesshomaru. But how’s he doing it? Deciding it best not to get in the way, Inuyasha walked towards Kagome and said, “Just let him do this. Something tells me he knows how to handle himself in a situation like this.” Kagome was worried about the outcome since Inuyasha seemed to be uncharacteristically cautious about the whole thing. Remaining silent, the girl watched as the armed priest made his way up the stairs, while he removed the safety on his gun.

Leaving behind the couple, Jess allowed himself to be led towards the room his reliquary was leading him towards. Stopping at the door near the middle of the hallway, Jess heard a low voice speak, and a split second later the happy voice of his cousin say something in reply. Hearing a door close, the priest opened the door to find his cousin sliding a shirt over his back. He saw the faint outline of what appeared to be scars on the lower part of his cousins back. Worried for the safety of his relative, the priest let out a low whistle.

Turning around out of curiosity, Seis face lit up at the sight of his cousin in his doorway. He was about to say something when the priest said, “Get over here and shut up.” Rolling his eyes, Sei began to walk towards his cousin when the priests face grew even darker at the sight of his cousin using a cane. Stepping in, the priest headed towards the bathroom door and was about to open it when Sesshomaru slid it open saying, “Might I ask what you’re doing in my home?” Sei tried to say something about his mates comment when his cousin said, “I want you to leave my cousins house. I will no longer allow a demon to torture him.”

Staring at his cousins statement in shock, Sei finally noticed the nine millimeter aimed at his mates head. Walking forward he said, “Jess, hold on a second he hasn’t done anything to me.” Grinning maliciously, the priest fired off a small warning shot past Sesshomarus head, and into one of the wall studs. Glaring at the priest, Sesshomaru said, “You should listen to him. I have done nothing to harm him. Now if you will please put the weapon down, I will not be forced to take your life. “

Getting between the two, Sei said, “Sessh, he’s my cousin. Although why he’s carrying a gun, and how he knew about you being a demon is beyond me.” Sneering, Sesshomaru pushed his mate back and said, “I understand but if he shoots that thing again I will be forced to attack. I’m sure I can get off on a ‘self-defense’ plea as it is called?” Smirking, Jess’s eyes said it all as he began to pull the trigger.

Dashing forward, Sesshomaru swung his claw at the priest, forcing him to dodge the blow, but he was able to plant his foot into the demons chin. Growling at being defiled by the shoe, Sesshomarus anger flared as his claw sliced through the weapon. Hearing the pieces of his barrel drop to the floor, Jess slid under the demon and pulled out a hidden gun from his pant leg, Turning rapidly, Sesshomaru was had his claw aimed directly at the priests throat while the priest had the barrel of his gun aimed at the demons eye.

The priest was used to stalemates like this, he’d been in situations like this countless times, being in a life and death struggle was pretty much his job, but this time he felt something that he hadn’t felt in a long time, fear. He’d kill many demons working for the church, and during his stay in England, he’d worked with an organization that had two vampires under their control. During that mission, he’d been met with hostility by the organizations ‘secret weapon’ and leader at first, but after a couple of tussles with the vamp, they put aside their differences through battle.

And despite the fact that he’d battled that creature, he didn’t need to worry about being sucked dry. Yet this time, he’d bitten off more than he could chew by going into battle without knowing what he was fighting. His cousin had tried to stop them, and judging by the demons actions he was there at his Seis request. Feeling a tightening feeling around his neck, Jess choked loudly as he felt his air being cut off. Looking up he saw the color of the demons eyes change from amber to purple. He also saw the demons fangs growing quickly and his hair begin to stand on end.

Jess removed his gun from his foes eye, and set it next to his side as he choked a cry for help at his cousin. Stepping forward, Sei pressed a hand to his mate shoulder as he said, “Come on, Sessh. He’s conceded now let him go.” Snarling loudly the demon squeezed harder, and watched his foes face turn red as he said, “No. He came into our home and attacked me. I am within my right to protect myself and my mate against any threats and this bastard was willing to kill me for the sake of my being near you.”

Reaching down, Sei touched his mates hand before saying, “He’s my cousin, and he means a lot to me, so please let him go. He was trying to protect me as you are now, so please let him go.” Seeing the fear in the priests eyes and hearing the worry in his mates voice, Sesshomaru breathed deeply and allowed his grip to relax. Blinking a couple of times the demon looked at the gasping human as he said, “Don’t ever do something like that again or I will kill you.” Sitting up, the priest looked between his cousin and demon before grabbing his gun and unloading it.

Setting it back on the ground he said, “Same here, although I must say I haven’t been that scared in a long time. Felt pretty good to be afraid.” Getting up, Seiya walked over to his cousin and began to hit him shouting, “What the hell are you doing shooting at people in my house?! You’re a priest so why do you have a gun?!” Blocking his blows, Jess took the beating as he said, “Because I’m an exorcist you dumb ass!” Stopping his assault, Seiya looked down at his cousin asking, “What do you mean exorcist?”

Getting up, the priest massaged his neck as he said, “That’s my duty in the church. I work with certain Vatican members and other religious groups to keep the forces of darkness from getting too strong.” Planting a fist in his cousins arm for such a stupid reason, Sei looked to his cousin and asked, “So why did you attack Sesshomaru? He’s not even evil or anything!” Reaching into his shirt, Jess removed a crucifix containing an odd looking gem. Pointing at the Taisho, he watched as it glowed brightly. Jess could feel the heat rising off of it, yet he noticed that it did not change colors.

The colors of the gem varied from light blue to black, and the gem barely darkened at all. Shoving it back into his shirt, the priest walked forward, got to his knees in front of the demon, and placed his head on the ground before saying, “I apologize. I should have checked the gems color before attacking. The color you saw it glowing shows that you bear no true threat to me, but the brightness shows the power you wield. I have fought powerful demons, and although you are among some of the strongest, you are the only one who has made me feel fear in many years. And for that I thank you.”

Grunting, Sesshomaru waved the apology away as he said, “Whatever your job is, I could care less. What I care about is the fact that you posed a threat to my mate and I did what I had to.” Looking up the priest chuckled before saying, “Seiya can you leave us a lone for a few minutes?” Turning his gaze to his mate, Sei was surprised to see Sesshomaru give him a nod that said, “I will be fine.” Fuming with anger at the demons willingness to be left alone with a man he almost killed, Sei stepped angrily from the room, while slamming the door shut behind him.

Flinching from his mates sudden outburst, Sesshomaru glared at the young man asking, “Why isn’t he allowed to stay in here?” Coughing, the priest pulled out a small vial of pills, swallowed one, and put it away before saying, “Because, I’m not really supposed to divulge this information to family.” Scratching his chin, Sesshomaru looked at the human and said, “You’re very good at what you do since you were able to dodge my attack. But, tell me how many demons have you slain?” Chuckling nervously the priest said, “Well over one thousand, but unlike most of the slayers I’ve worked with, I’m a bit more tame than them.”

Standing up the demon asked, “How are you tame?” Snickering the priest put his gun back into his ankle holster before saying, “Let’s just say that some slayers I’ve worked with, their handiwork would Dr. Mengalay vomit.” Unsure of who this Dr. Mengalay was, Sesshomaru said, “I take it that they’ve done some incredible evil things to my fellow brethren before and after they died?” Nodding Jessy sat on the bed before pulling out a small silver device. Sesshomaru had seen many people using these on his outings with Seiya, yet he’d never used one.

Keeping still he watched as the young man used a tiny little stick to poke at some things on a screen as he said, “Here are all the demons I’ve killed by species.” Taking it from the humans hand, Sesshomaru used the little stick to poke a down arrow as the screen read, “Demons slain as of July 17th, 2005. Bear:17, Crow:37, Lycanthrope:50, Dragon:175, Puma:19, Imp:346,......” The list went on and on, bat, snake, leopard, panther, eagle, falcon, all were documented in with specific information regarding weaknesses and territories. However, the Taishos heart leapt as his scan revealed that no Inu-youkai had been slain by the priest.

The relief of that learning that tiny speck of information wasn’t a blessing in disguise. The fact that no Inu-youkai were slain at this humans hands didn’t necessarily mean his people were alive. For all he knew he was the last of his kind to exist on the planet. Looking to the human he asked, “Is there anything to let me know how many different demons are alive on the planet?” Reaching out, Jessy took the Ipod from the Taisho, clicked a few buttons and then asked, “What type of demon are you?” Snorting, Sesshomaru glared daggers at the boy before saying, “I’m the current Inu no Taisho.”

Sesshomaru was suprised to see the boys eyes widen at the information, but he soon saw the young priests face go back to normal as he typed in a bit of information. Tossing it to the demon, Jessy said, “It’s a bit of a shock to meet an Inu no Taisho, since most of your kind in hiding.” Growling at the priest, Sesshomaru stared at the screen to find a piece of information that made his heart fill with hope. “Current Inu-Youkai Population: 797 pure bloods, 3,612 hanyous. Current Clan head: UNKNOWN.” Sesshomaru set the device on the bed before saying, “Thank you, but tell me something, why are you an exorcist?”

Taking a slow draw from a cigarette he’d just lit, the priest blew a large cloud of smoke from his nose before saying, “I have no clue. I could care less about religion and all that hypocritical bullshit that goes on in it. I know there’s a god and I know a lot about demons. It’s not like I have anything against them, it’s just that well I want to keep the peace between demons and humans. Because my old man is a diplomat between humans and demons. He makes treaties and the like, but every now and then ya get humans and demons who try to break a peace that’s been held for the past three and a half centuries between our kinds. So I became a priest, took the vows, but since I have such a high pressure job, I don’t have to keep my vows since I need some sort of relief to keep me from killing a bunch of people.”

Sesshomaru watched as the human laughed dryly at the joke before asking, “So basically you are allowed to do what is ever necessary to keep once side from getting to powerful, even if it means taking human life?” Putting out his cigarette, Jessy nodded as he said, “Yeah, I could care less about what religion you are, and whether or not you are human or demon. I didn’t mean to attack you, but when this thing starts to burn me like it did I have to assume the worst. Problem is that this time I didn’t expect the demon to be my cousins husband. But with this info about him it’s my duty as a priest to pray for him, despite the fact I’ve known plenty of couples like you guys in my time.”

Not sure if he should be flattered, Sesshomaru remained silent as the priest said, “I met this guy in Ireland. Hell of a nice guy, problem is that he sees anybody who is a demon, he’ll slaughter them without any questions asked. I, on the other hand, use this little trinket to judge whether or not you’re worth keeping alive. You stayed in the blue so you live, but had you forced it to go black, one of us would be dead.” Chuckling, Sesshomaru said, “Lucky for you your cousin is the only one who can keep me from killing anybody. I will say that I have killed in my time, sometimes for greed, other times in defense, but with Seiya around I know I don’t need to kill.”

Rubbing his eyes, Jessy said, “I need to tell you that I only attacked because I saw the scars on my cousins back. And when I saw you, well you’ve probably figured out what was going through my head when I saw the two of you together, one using a cane to walk and scarred up, while the other is in perfect health.” The memories of his finding Seiya in Polongs grasp flooding his mind, Sesshomaru said, “I wasn’t able to protect him at one point which is why he has those injuries, but I will tell you that I am spending every moment I can to make amends for allowing such things to happen to him.”

Not saying anything about it, Jessy asked, “So I take it you two are living together since you said ‘our home’ which is making me curious about one thing.” Wondering what the priest was getting to, Sesshomaru was about to ask what he was getting at, he was answered when the priest said, “I know that since Inuyasha is your brother, the hair and stuff are a dead give away, and Kagome is his mate, the demon ability to conceive has gone dormant in him. And I know for certain that Kagome isn’t pregnant due to Inuyashas treatment of her. Yet for some reason I my gem is picking up two hanyou signals in this house. And since you are with my cousin that leaves me to ask you this question. Does my cousin know that he is going to be a father?”

Sesshomaru was shocked by the priests question, but a scream of pain from outside the door made him go and open the door to find Seiya sitting on the floor, clutching his knee while staring into the room with a look of complete shock on his face.
