In the darkness of the cave, he wakes. Rubbing his eyes sleepily, he searches the gloom. By the dying glow of the fire, he can see the soft outlines of his parents. Carefully, he crawls around his father until he reaches his mother’s side.

Sniffling softly, trying to hold back his tears, he snuggles close to her back seeking the comfort and warmth of her body. Instinctively, she wakens at the feel of him burrowing into her.

“What is it, little one?”, she questions, as she turns to enfold him in her embrace.

“I had a bad dream. I dreamed you and Papa were dead and I was all alone,” he says, pressing his face into her chest, trying desperately to dispel the images of his nightmare.

“It will be all right. Papa and I are right here and we aren’t going anywhere.” Sitting up, she pulls him into her lap, wraps him in her arms and settles him close to her heart. Gently rocking him, she begins humming a soft, soothing melody. The pitch rising and falling in her smooth, clear voice lulling him to sleep.

Smiling softly, he fists his hands into her clothing and presses his ear to her chest so he can hear the cadence of her heartbeat. With the reassurance of his mother’s quietly beating heart and the sweet sound of her lullaby, he allows himself to relax and drift toward sleep.

Somewhere between wakefulness and slumber, he floats. “I love you, Momma,” Shippo murmurs as he tightens his hold and curls deeper into the security of the arms that rock him.

Kagome’s eyes widen in wonder at the fox kit. Then smiling softly, she cradles him closer, offering him her love and hopefully, some peace. Even if it is only for a short time.
