InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Heartbeat ❯ Chapter 1

When, he wondered, did he first realize that he needed to hear the sound of her heartbeat so much? Was it when she first shed tears for him? Was it when she let the world know that she would willingly sacrifice herself to insure his safety? Was it when she forgave his own fickle heart, time and time again?

When did he first realize that hearing her heartbeat gave him the strength to continue? Was it the first time he sat by the well, waiting impatiently for her return? Was it when he’d sent her home for her own good? Could it have been when he felt her heart breaking because he couldn’t say goodbye to an old love?

No matter when it had happened, he knew he couldn’t live without having that steady, loving beat to measure the tempo of his life. He’d found that when they had been apart for those three years he’d had no direction, no guidance in his life. He’d been incapable of the most simple actions at first. He’d had to learn how to be, all over again.

When he’d left her with her family, he hadn’t realized that he’d left the metronome of his life behind, too. He hadn’t realized how the simple sound of her great heart had come to motivate his entire existence.

When she’d finally returned, and he’d sensed the rhythm of her heat before he’d even scented her, he’d felt the peace of completion wash over him. He’d felt his own heart start to beat in sync with hers, once again. He’d rushed to her side, pulling her into his arms as quickly as he could, just so he could feel her heartbeat against his own chest.

Slowly, his life had regained the pace of her heartbeat. The cadence of his emotions matched the pounding of that organ. The soaring heights that were reached when the beating quickened in passion were pure bliss. The depths that were plumbed as the pace slowed to encompass the despair of losing a lifelong friend brought tears to his eyes.

But through it all, he was simply grateful to have that heartbeat to help guide him through his life. He found himself pulling her to him at the strangest times. He would reach out to her in the night, just to feel the comfort that only her heart could provide. In times of turmoil, he would calm himself by counting the beats. He gave himself entirely to the comfort of her love as it was reflected in her heartbeat.

He daily thanked whatever gods he could think of for returning that heartbeat to his life. Whatever or whomever had been responsible for their reunion had his undying gratitude. He knew he would have lived as an empty shell without her, but with her heart to guide him, he had life and love, all tied to her beating heart. He couldn’t, no he wouldn’t ever be able to live without her in his life.
