Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha...but I wish I did.
Chapter 5
Friday night passed by without incident at Heaven and Hell. Kag and Legion worked the tables while Sango read a book to her comatose brother. Hojo managed to hold down the bar despite his good ole boy denseness. Every so often he would space out watching Kagome, but no one really took too much notice of him. However, at the residence of a certain dog demon things were anything, but calm. Inuyasha paced uneasily while Miroku continued his research on the mysterious Kagome and company. Upstairs teenage pop music blasted until Sesshomaru gave his fourteen-year-old foster daughter, Rin, the command to turn it down. She immediately did so, but about fifteen minutes later loud singing took its place. Rin had placed headphones on and was singing at the top of her lungs. She didn’t sound half bad. Inuyasha, however, was getting a headache anyway.
Miroku who had been asked that same question 20 times in the last 5 minutes rubbed his temples angrily as he looked up from the computer he was working on. His right hand was beginning to ache. The concealing spell on the beads and glove that covered it had completely disappeared. Inuyasha’s concealing spell was down as well. He had his white dog ears flatten to his skull as Rin hit a particularly high note. “The answer is the same as the last time you asked that question, Inuyasha. I’m working as fast as I can.”
From low in his throat Inuyasha let out a frustrated growl. It was bad enough having to live in this house with his cold fish half-brother. He didn’t need his best friend mad at him as well. He flopped crossed legged on the floor. The click clack of keys was all that he heard lulling him into a half-asleep state. He was nearly completely asleep despite Rin’s singing when Miroku let out a low whistle.
Inuyasha snapped awake. He leapt up and nearly ran to Miroku’s side. “What did you find?”
“It’s what I’m not finding that is so interesting. Kagome Higurashi’s life is an open book. We know already that she’s a scholarship student at Tokyo University majoring in pre-med. We know her family died in a car crash two and half years ago. We know everything about her. When and where she was born, what her family was like, where she lived, where she lives now. I know more about her life than I know about yours, Yash. By the way, she lives in an apartment over that club which she is part owner in not just an employee like that other woman implied. The other name on the papers is Sango Hirakotsu. She seems to be a little more mysterious than her friend Kagome. Her family was killed about five years ago. Her brother remains in a coma, but has incredibly strong vitals signs for a coma victim. I’m not sure who she is, but I’ve already set one of our informants on the force to digging into the case files. There’s something odd about her history.”
“So that sounds all well and good, monk, but what are you not finding?” Inuyasha asked confused as to what Miroku was finding so interesting.
“The demon-woman that stopped you at the bar, name is Legion. No last name. No birth certificates, school records, no family, no nothing. No demon has ever heard of her. Until three years ago this demon didn’t exist. It’s like she just appeared out of thin air. But not only did she not exist, no one seems to be asking her why she didn’t have a last name, or any identification. It’s like no one around her even notices or cares.”
Inuyasha growled. The only other demons like that he knew of were that bastard’s incarnations. He didn’t like the idea that one of them was near His Kagome. What? His? Hellfire and damnation! She wasn’t his and if Inuyasha had his way he wouldn’t be getting anymore emotionally involved with her than was necessary. Inuyasha put into words the question that was plaguing his mind. “Why would Naraku be interested in them?”
Miroku thought for a second, “Even more importantly if this demon is one of his incarnations’ what the hell has she been waiting for three years for?”
Inuyasha wasn’t normally a thinker; he was more of a doer. Do first; ask questions later if you gave a damn. Usually, he didn’t. Something was off about this whole friggin’ situation. He didn’t like the waiting and the watching. It always seemed like Naraku was a thousand steps ahead of them. Catching up in this game wasn’t an option when it was hard enough to keep their heads above the water. “Dammit,” Inuyasha snarled with a great deal of typical impatience. “I hate playing these fucking games!”
Miroku looked down at his right hand and mentally, sympathized with his friend. He knew what Inuyasha meant. Naraku had them where he wanted them. The bastard was after something, but neither of them knew what. “I agree. I guess it is a good thing that you and Kagome are going to get more intimate.” The way Miroku said that implied something dirty. Inuyasha balled up his fist and brought down on the top of his friend’s head.
“Get your mind out of the gutter, Miroku!” Inuyasha barked at him.
Miroku righted himself after his momentary lack of consciousness. With a mischievous glint in his eyes, “Really, Inuyasha, you just met her. She doesn’t seem the type to just hop in the sack with you.” He dodged another fist that came at him. “So you were going to seduce her, you naughty dog, you!” By this point Miroku was edging his way away from the angry hanyou who looked like he was about to come across the room and strangle him. From years of observation and training, Miroku noticed the signs that said he was about to pounce. Just as Inuyasha made a leap at him he slammed the door to the study in the hanyou’s face and went tearing up the stairs. He bypassed a startled Rin who gave him her typical silly grin as she saw Inuyasha come tearing after him. She started giggling when the two men nearly ran over Sesshomaru who gave them a disapproving stare as he walked past them to his own bedroom. Inuyasha ignored him headed after the monk who had pissed him off. Rin burst out laughing again when Miroku ran into a rather expensive vase causing it to teeter precariously. It was an unusual sight watching him try to catch the vase and avoid Inuyasha fists. She nearly collapsed into a fit of tears when Inuyasha finally got a hold of the protesting monk. At least things here were never dull.

Sango came back around ten and helped out until they closed up at three am. Then, three very tired women climbed wearily up the stairs to their apartments. They separated and did their nightly routines, removing makeup and brushing teeth, slipping into PJ’s before crashing in separate bedrooms.
Kagome lay awake unable to fall asleep despite her exhaustion. She hadn’t wondered at the time, but how had Inuyasha found her at school? Did he know her address also, because she hadn’t given it to him and he hadn’t asked for it? That was definitely creepy, but she still couldn’t help thinking that he wouldn’t harm her in any way. Was she crazy to think that? Some demon, no a hanyou, that she had never met before who seemed to be stalking her and she was thinking that she could trust him with her life. Kagome rolled on her side hugging her extra pillow close to her as she bent her knees and curled around it. She felt so lost without her mom, grandpa, and little brother. Someone had taken them away from her trying to get to her. Tears rolled down her cheeks. She felt so lonely, so empty. When her family was alive, she had always been happy and the world had seemed so beautiful and full of life. Where had the light gone? The joy? She bit back sobs as the despair she fought against weighed down her soul. The mattress sunk in behind her and she rolled over laying her head in the lap that was waiting there. She let the sobs go then. She felt someone take the spot that she had just vacated laying down next to her and putting their head on her shoulder. Her best friends held on to her as she sobbed giving her the comfort and strength that she needed. They let her grieve without a word. Sango ran her fingers soothingly through the strands of Kagome’s hair. She had been in Kagome’s place many times. They all felt comforted. Kagome was not sure how long they stayed like that, but finally she spoke breaking the peaceful silence. “Sometimes I feel so lost and empty without them. Like the light was turned out when they died and I can’t find the switch to turn it back on,” she whispered softly.
Legion sat up from behind her bringing her knees up so she could lean her arms on them. Her black and red hair flowed around her face as she rested her head on top of them while she looked at Kagome. Kagome and Sango both were shocked when she said, “I un…No, I don’t understand not exactly. I have a family that loves me. I have six brothers. I don’t think I ever told you that. I am the only girl. And I have nine male cousins that all live close by with my uncle and his mate, plus my parents’ best friends and their four sons and daughter are just like family to us. They are my world,” her eyes welled up with unshed tears, “but I can’t go back to them, not yet. Someone tried to kill my mom, tried to take away the most important person in my family. Unless I find the person who attacked her, she will die. She was starting to fade when I left. My dad who is normally so strong, looked like he was about to fall apart. I knew that he couldn’t come after the demon so I did. I miss my mother so much. She was the light in my world and being so far away from her, my dad, my brothers, and the rest of my extended family has been so hard on me. There are times when I am alone at night that I think about just leaving and going back to them. Then, I remember that if I go back that the light will go out forever. Not just for me, but for my whole family. When I met you and Sango, the light stopped flickering. You both have given me the strength to go on. To keep fighting. You have both lost everything, but you still have hope. I don’t know how to turn your switch back on, but what I wanted to say was that you are a part of the light in my world.”
Kagome sat up, a real smile on her tear-stained face. She pounced on Legion followed by Sango and the three girls held on to each other like lifelines. “Thank you,” Kag whispered into her ear.
When they separated, Sango who had been silent said, “Well, you know that explains a lot about you. I bet your brothers and cousins tried to overprotect you. No wonder you dress like a whore now. Must be so freeing?”
Sango let out a squeal and leapt off the bed when she saw Legion grab Kag’s pillow and swing at her head catching Kagome in mid-swing. This provoked another pillow fight that lasted for all of two minutes, before the already dog-tired women called a truce. Legion smiled at her friends rubbing her tired eyes before standing. “Well, I’m actually going to go crash before the sun comes up. Don’t stay up all day…that just sounds weird,” she laughed at herself before saying goodnight and heading out the door.
”Konnichiwa, Legion,” the other two girls replied as she left the room. When they heard the door to her bedroom close, Kagome said, “You know that’s the first time she has really opened up about her past. In three years, she has never mentioned her family. Strange how you can know someone so well, but realize you don’t know them at all. I’m glad that she finally told us.”
Sango laid back on the bed closing her eyes as she said, “Yeah, I know what you mean. I never thought we would be best friends with a demon. Still, I couldn’t help, but trust her. She’s changed since we first met her. She was so glum when we first met her. What she said really does explain a lot about her. I wonder what the demon did to her mom that’s killing her.”
“I don’t know, but if her mom’s a demon like her imagine what it would take to kill her. That demon that attacked her must be really strong,” Kagome said as she fell back on her bed. “Well, enough gloomy talk, I think I can go to sleep now. Are you going to go back to your room?”
“Hmm?” came the sleepy reply from Sango.
“Get up and go to your bed, lazy.”
“Uh-Uh..” she mumbled.
“Go or I am going to dump you out of this bed.”
“Okay,” Sango said as she got up and stumbled towards her room, tripping over the corner of Kag’s dresser in the process. Kag waited to hear the door to her room close before curling up under her sheets and passing out. Let what may come.
~
Kagome rolled over cracking her eyes open to look at the clock, three o’clock in the afternoon. She had slept all day. She stretched her arms when the annoying noise that had awoken her broke the quiet again. Riiinnngg! Why wouldn’t they answer the phone?
“Someone answer the damn phone,” she muttered softly to herself as it rang the third time.
“Where is it?!” someone yelled from the living room. Thudding feet pounded on the floor as the voice finally located the phone just as it rang a fourth time. “Hiya!” they answered before everything went quiet. Kagome was beginning to drift off to sleep again when her door slammed open. “Wakey, Wakey, sleepyhead,” they said as they jumped on the bed jostling Kagome. Kag cracked her eyes open again. She pulled her covers over her head when she saw Legion grinning at her. It was too early to be up on a Saturday. (A/N Three o’clock in the afternoon is too early to be up? Sleepyhead…oh wait I do that sometimes)
“Wake up, Kagome,” Legion said a sickly sweet voice. Kagome just grunted and proceeded to fall back asleep. Legion who still had the phone in her hand put it back to her ear. “Kagome doesn’t want to get up, Inuyasha. She had a rough night last night. Maybe you can call back later?” Legion laughed and went flying off the bed as Kagome shot up when she heard what Legion was telling the other person on the phone. She let out a shriek of rage as she made a grab for the phone falling face first on the ground. “Well, she’s up now, but she did a belly flop on the floor.”
“Give me the phone!” Kagome yelled as she pulled herself up. Legion went tearing out of the room feet pounding on the wooden floor laughing as Kagome came after her. Legion still had the phone at her ear.
She said, “You know she really isn’t a morning, well, afternoon person. You sure you want to talk to her?” She nearly fell as she ran down the stairs two at a time. When she got to the bottom, Kagome tackled her sending the phone sliding across the floor. Legion grunted as Kag stretched out and snagged it while sitting on her back.
“Hello?”
Inuyasha who had been party to the last five minutes of insanity was laughing in the background. He managed to get a hold of himself and reply to Kagome. “Afternoon, sleepyhead.”
“Inuyasha?”
“ ;Yeah.”
“Why are you calling?” Kagome asked confused. “And how did you get my number?”
“I called the club and then it transferred to this number after a few rings. Your roommate answered and said you were there when I asked her if she could give me your number.”
“Oh!” Kagome exclaimed softly that made sense. “But why are you calling?”
Inuyasha smirked on the other side of the phone. Miroku had reminded him this morning that Kagome probably thought he was stalker when he showed up at the university. Since he didn’t get her address, he should call and ask her for it to cover his tracks. “Well, I forgot to get your address yesterday and wanted to get it so I could pick you up tonight.” Of course, he already knew where she lived, but she didn’t have to know that.
“I was wondering how that was going to work out,” Kagome said feeling relieved that he wasn’t the stalker she was worried he was. “I live at, in an apartment above the club. Just come up the stairwell in the back to the second floor door. Someone will answer the door.”
“Okay, well, I let you go back to sleep, lazy,” Inuyasha replied. “See you tonight.”
“Wait, I have a question. You said to wear a dress. How fancy of a dress?” Kagome asked gnawing on her bottom lip. She really didn’t have a lot of fancy dresses. No need, No money.
”Oh, well, we are going to Mario’s, wear whatever you think is best,” Inuyasha said nearly snickering at her gasp when she heard they were going to such a classy restaurant. “I’ll see you tonight, bitch.” He hung up without waiting for her answer laughing the whole time.
Kagome cursed at the phone. He must like pissing her off to do shit like that. Wasn’t the whole point of going out tonight supposed to be as an apology for their first meeting? What a strange, strange demon!
“Bastard!” she snarled while glaring at the innocent phone.
From beneath her, “If you are through talking to the phone, could you get the hell off of me?” Legion said a low growl coming from her throat.
Kagome feeling the need to annoy someone said, “How could you embarrass me like that? That was Inuyasha!” She accompanied these words with tickles to the trapped girl’s sides. Legion was begging for mercy between gasps and laughs.
Sango walked in to see her two best friends on the floor together. She had a cup of joe in one hand. She raised one perfectly formed eyebrow. “I don’t even want to know.”
“Sango, Help me!”
“Why should I?”
“Don’t you dare help her!” Kagome threatened.
“Please, ….stop….hehe…SANGO!”
Sango started snickering as she watched Legion squirm on the floor. “TRAITOR…Stop it, Kag!” Legion yelled when she heard Sango. Sango was finally moved by the pathetic sight before her.
“Let her go, Kag.”
“I guess she has suffered enough.” With one last tickle, Kag got off of her friend.
Legion stood up. She gave them both a evil glare. “You will regret this. I know where you sleep.” Then, she laughed as they rolled their eyes. Both of them knew that Legion would walk through hell itself to protect them.
“So who was on the phone?” Sango asked as she sat down at the table curling one of her legs underneath her.
Legion who obviously had not learned her lesson said, “It was Kagome’s sweetheart, Inuyasha.” She said Inuyasha’s name with a sappy lovesick voice. Kagome picked up the first thing her hand found and threw at her. Luckily, it wasn’t breakable and Legion was too fast to get hit by it. However, the object a bouncy ball that someone had left on the table by the couch went ricocheting off of the wall and knocked an empty glass vase onto the floor breaking it. “You know this apartment is really not a safe place for things made with glass,” Legion commented. “I have to go do some busy work in the office, before we open up. Don’t forget the cell phone when Inuyasha comes to get you. Oh, by the way, Sango, it is your turn to do the inventory.” She pushed a stack of papers that were sitting on the table over to Sango, before waving absently as she headed for the door that would take her to her office.
Sango groaned at the list. She was going to have to see how much of everything that the club had. It would probably take her all friggin’ night. Joy! “I’ll be back up here in time for your date. I plan on playing the overprotective father since we are lacking one. I’ll be sure to have my guns out and clean them.” Sango stood up and headed out the same door that Legion had just used. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!”
Kag rolled her eyes. So it was already nearly four. Had they really wasted an hour being stupid? She grabbed the broom and the dustpan sweeping up the glass from the vase she had accidentally broken. Well, she had two and a half hours to get ready for her date. She was definitely going to have to borrow something out of someone’s closet, because she was certain that she lacked a dress that would be elegant and fancy enough for a place like Mario’s. Maybe Legion had some clothes that would work.
