Kagome lived with her grandmother Kaede basically the first nine years of her life. Her mother was always “away” working, partying, or out with another one of her boyfriends'. Kagome had attended a private academy from kindergarten until the end of her fourth grade year. During the course of Kagome's fourth grade year, she began staying with her mother off and on, but more frequently than in the past. Since she and her mother hadn't really “bonded” properly, they often fought and bickered to one another, and yelled at each other constantly. After a while, her mother, blaming their issues on Kagome's grandmother, forced Kagome to attend counseling, believing there wasn't a thing wrong with her, and that it was Kagome who had issues to work out. If only she knew….
 
In the next year or two, Kagome's mother gave birth to a little boy, which was the gender she wanted Kagome to be. Too bad Kagome ended up practically raising her newborn baby brother, Souta Higurashi, until he turned 5. In time, Kagome's mother continued to date, most of the men she brought home were rude, drunken, pot headed assholes. Of course, Kagome would never tell her own mother that. But…her new boyfriend was different. There was just something about him…She couldn't pin point it, but…deep down…she…feared him. Before he moved in, a few months after her mother and he had been dating, she informed Kagome that he was a convicted child molester. Her mother also stated that he didn't do what he was accused of. Believing her mother's every word; Kagome could just shrug and nod.
 
After Ms. Higurashi's (she didn't change her name from when she married Souta's father) new “boy toy” moved in, her and Kagome's fighting escalated 3 stories higher than before.
