Summary: Kagome, in a state of rage, goes back to her time and unintentionally seals the well shut.Years pass and the group disbands, but one person remains true. Only one keeps waiting, hoping she'll return to him.

"That's it, Inuyasha! I've had enough. One minute you say you want to be with me forever and the next you're off with Kikyo. Well, I'm done with these mind games. I'm going home for good. Keep your precious mass of bones and graveyard soil!"

 

"Kagome, wait! You don't understand!"

 

"There's nothing to understand! You love Kikyo, so just admit it! Maybe I can find a boy in my time who actually cares about other people's feelings!"

 

Without looking back, Kagome jumped into the well. Inuyasha tried to go after her, but an unseen force kept him from going anywhere. An invisible barrier had formed, blocking the well's opening. He realized Kagome's anger must have manifested into this, just to keep him from following her.

 

Days passed, then weeks. Still, the barrier remained and Kagome had, as far as they knew, made no effort to break it.

 

After five years, they had given up hoping. After defeating Naraku, Sango and Miroku got married and built a hut for themselves near the demon slayer's old village. Kirara and Shippo stayed with Kaede, not only to give Miroku and Sango privacy, but to keep watch over their other friend.

 

Only one remained at the well.

 

Inuyasha stayed beside it, night and day, using the Goshinboku for shelter. He hardly ate anymore, only what Shippo occasionally brought him. He remained at his post no matter what was going on around him. He had to wait, in case his Kagome should return.

 

*A hundred days have made me older
Since the last time that I saw your pretty face
A thousand lies have made me colder
And I don't think I can look at this the same*

 

"Where is she now? Is she at that 'college' place she talked about going to? Is she married? Does she have children? Does she ever think of me?"

 

*But all the miles that separate
Disappear now when I'm dreaming of your face*

 

Inuyasha sighed and ran a hand along the side of the well. He could remember when he sat here, holding Kagome close to him. He remembered when, only a few feet away, he had stood beneath the Goshinboku and asked her to be his mate. He could still see her smiling face, the tears of joy rolling down her cheeks. He heard her whisper her answer breathlessly, "Yes."

 

If only they hadn't had that last misunderstanding.

"Hey, Inuyasha."

 

Inuyasha looked up to see Shippo standing over him, a plate in his hands.

 

"I brought you some lamb. Kaede put a lot of herbs in to make it spicy. Here."

 

Shippo set the plate beside the motionless hanyou and began to walk away.

 

"Well, I guess I'll see you. And remember, Inuyasha, if you ever want a place to stay, there's always room with us."

 

As soon as he walked off, Inuyasha picked at the lamb and popped a small piece into his mouth. Shippo hadn't been kidding when he said it was spicy. As he ate, Inuyasha could only think of the argument he and Kagome had.

*The miles just keep rollin'
As the people leave their way to say hello
I've heard this life is overrated
But I hope that it gets better as we go*

 

He had gone to Kikyo, that much was true. But Kagome hadn't known the whole story.

 

"Inuyasha. Naraku has been defeated now, correct?"

"Yes, Kikyo, he has."

"Then you must make good of your promise. Come to Hell with me, Inuyasha."

 

"Kikyo, I'm sorry. I... I won't go with you."

"But, Inuyasha, you swore that once Naraku was gone, you would spend eternity with me in Hell. That was your promise."

"I know that, Kikyo, but you must understand. I... asked Kagome to be my mate and she accepted. My heart and soul belong to her now, not to you. You had my heart once, but you cast it aside because it wasn't perfect. I had to be human for you to love me."

 

"I only wanted what was best for you."

"No, you wanted what was best for you, not me. All I wanted, my whole life, was to be accepted. I thought you would be the one to make that dream be a reality. But even you were distrusting. It wans't until I found Kagome, someone who loved me for who I am, that I was ever truly happy. If you really wanted what was best for me, you'd let me stay with Kagome."

 

Extremely displeased, Kikyo grabbed him tightly and opened a portal to hell beneath them. Right before he was dragged completely within, he wrenched free of Kikyo's grasp. Unable to escape, she was taken to hell and he was left to be with Kagome.

Tears began to fall freely to the ground. If only Kagome had let him explain, if only he'd never gone to Kikyo in the first place. He stubled over to the Goshinboku and slammed his head agianst the trunk.

 

"Why was I so stupid? I should never have gone to Kikyo. I should have stayed with Kagome and left those damn soul collectors alone. If I ahd, she'd be here right now, with me. Instead, I lost her. She sealed the well so she'd never have to see me again. Now, I'm alone and it's all my damn fault!"

Inuyasha let out an anguished scream and collapsed beside the tree. As the sun set, he felt his eyelids growing heavy. Finally, he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep. His dreams, he knew, were his true sanctuary.
