InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Hidden Past, Hidden Self ❯ Awakening ( Chapter 21 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

I don't own any of the InuYasha characters in this fanfic. The ones I own are Kane-Sakura, Setsuna, and Trowa. Mika is owned by my friend Stephanie, Michi and Ori to my friend Nicky, and Yuki (coming in a later chapter) belongs to Danielle.

Hey, I hope you all read the movie for HPHS, `Freak Out'. If you didn't, you really should because it's some of my best work and my most creative thinking. Plus, it's very suspenseful, full of action, and has the beginning of Kane and Setsuna's romance. Don't miss it!

Last time on Hidden Past Hidden Self:

“Hey cat-boy, can I talk to you?”
Setsuna gazed down at the wolf demoness. “What about?”
“Have you noticed how Kane's kind of locked herself away from everyone?”
He sighed and turned his head away. “Yeah I have.” Of course he had. The last time he'd actually touched her was when he had carried her back to the village only days earlier. And when he had tried to, she would withdraw from his hand. Then he noticed how many words they had exchanged since that day. Maybe only two words had passed her lips and he had struggled to make a conversation with her, but to no avail. “Mika, she needs time to recover…”
“You're taking it hard, aren't you?” She asked. “Can't say I blame you; after all, how can she trust any man again.”
***
Suddenly, a pink barrier encased the whole group and the sad moment was dispelled. “What the hell is this?” Kane asked harshly, wiping excess tears from her eyes. `Is it another one of my enemies?' Kane unsheathed Teretsu again and took her battle stance. “Be on your guard; I have a feeling that whoever is out there wants us dead.” Kane looked around, trying to determine where the danger was. Finally, a black figure approached from the shadows. Around the feminine body were butterflies that represented the souls she carried with her to sustain her self. When she came out of the darkness, a fairly short girl, taller than Michi, with long, billowing brown hair shook her head at the group. Her bangs brushed over her forehead, revealing a marking of some kind.
“Who are you?!” Kane demanded.
***
“My father?” Kane said uneasily.
“And my mother?” Mika quizzed. “No way! Me and Koga were my mother's only children!” She nervously laughed it off.
“Sesshomaru, InuYasha, and I are my father's only children.” Kane pointed out. “Now tell me, how did you come to this conclusion?”
“Before either of you were born, your father and your mother met under rare circumstances.” Yuki began. “I'm guessing you're both about sixteen years of age, correct?”
“Yeah, and what of it?” Mika snorted.
“One year before my father met your mother, he met my mother.” Yuki pointed at Mika. “They were possessed by an evil soul and had intercourse. In turn, the soul exited your father in the middle of what he was doing, thus he had no memory of this woman. He was confused and lost, so he abandoned her. Because I had been conceived, the soul remained with her as I grew and in nine months time, I was born. The spirit managed to keep her under control long enough to drop me off in a village close to where she had delivered me. After that, she had no memory of me or my father. She went off to find your father and had you and Koga.

“What do you say to coming along with us?” Kane offered. “I mean, my brother shouldn't mind too much. And if he does, I'll just tell him to sit and…” A loud bang was heard in the brush. “Sorry bro!” Kane called out. “Anyway, I'll subdue him if he says no.”
Yuki smiled. “Arigato, I'd really appreciate it.”
“Kane, what the hell did I do now to deserve that?!” InuYasha called out to his sister.
“I didn't know you were near. Warn me nex…” Kane called out as she got up and ran over to her brother. Yuki watched as Setsuna followed close by, almost running to keep up with the girl. She couldn't hear what the conversation was as Mika and Michi started arguing, but judging by her pointing in the direction InuYasha was, she was telling him to sit, and Setsuna was trying to calm her down by getting in front of her. She smiled. “Maybe now, I can finally get rid of my curse and discover more about my past. Maybe…”

Chapter 21: Awakening

“Your enemy is very tricky; he can disguise himself as anything he wants, even your friends.” InuYasha explained from behind Kane-Sakura. “You've already ruled out Michi, Mika and Yuki; all that's left is Setsuna.” BONK! “Hey, what's the big idea?!”

Kane had knocked her brother on the head with her sword's black scabbard and a giant lump was forming on his head. “Don't involve Setsuna, especially in that way!” Kane complained, dropping her sheath back onto her hip and crossing her arms.

“How else am I supposed to motivate you to fight?!”

“And how the hell do you suppose that's supposed to motivate me in the first place!” Kane argued. “For starters, it would put doubt and fear in my mind and I wouldn't want to attack!”

InuYasha got in her face; she didn't back down. “That's the point of training, so you lose that sense of doubt and fear!”

In the mean time, Michi, Mika and Yuki decided it was best to relax as the argument ensued for what was the fifth time that day. They wandered off to a shaded area and lounged in the grass, trying to figure out how this was training. “I don't get it. How is InuYasha training her if all he does is argue with her?” Michi asked.

Yuki and Mika shrugged their shoulders.

“I don't like your bone-headed ideas!”

“Get used to it! And they're not bone-headed!”

The argument continued back and forth like that as Setsuna stood opposite the hanyou's. “Hey, am I gonna help train or just stand here and watch you argue?” Neither of the dogs answered as they were too busy arguing with each other and it was just starting to heat up. Kane's sword was sheathed again, but she had her claws outstretched and her brother was cracking his knuckles. So, he gave up and walked over to where the girls were sitting. “Anything good over here?”

“No…” All three answered in exasperated tones.

“Oh, um is there anything to do?”

“What's the matter cat, bored?” Mika looked over at him.

“Duh, those two are too busy arguing again to train.” Setsuna sat beside Yuki.

“You know what would help her finish her training? Getting some real experience by leaving here and going on an adventure.” Yuki said matter-of-factly.

Mika sat up straight. “Yuki, that's it!”

“Huh? What's it?” Michi had fallen asleep only moments ago and hadn't been listening.

“We'll leave! Me, you two, and Kane, we'll all go train together!” Mika leapt into the air in excitement. `I can finally get away from her brother!'

Michi sat up and rubbed her eyes. “Do you think he'd let her go so easily?”

The wolf demon stopped acting so happy. “Gee, thanks for bursting my bubble, monk. Unless…” She turned to Yuki. “…you can convince him.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on for a second. Me? Why me?” Yuki asked, pointing her index finger at herself.

“Hey, it was your idea. Besides, InuYasha shouldn't be too hard to sway. He's like a weak little branch on a tree, blowing in the wind.” Mika lied.

“Fine, I'll go talk to him.” She stood and walked over towards Kane and InuYasha as the quarrel continued.

Setsuna exchanged a look with Mika. “Dead girl walkin'?” He asked. Mika just nodded her head.

“…no fun!” Kane yelled, shoving InuYasha in the chest with her finger.

“It's not supposed to be `fun'! It's hard work!” He rolled a sleeve up and pointed at his arm as he flexed his muscles. “This didn't just appear overnight!”

Yuki put a barrier between the two siblings and encased Kane in her own sound proof bubble. “Hey, what the hell is going on here?! Let me out!”

“What's the deal Yuki?! We're in the middle of a training session!” InuYasha argued.

Yuki rolled her eyes. “You weren't training, you were having a sibling argument.” She sighed. “I stopped you because we have a favor to ask of you.”

“Spill it.”

Kane pressed her ear to the bubble, but to no avail; she couldn't hear a thing. `What is she doing out there with my brother?'

“We were wondering if we, me, Michi, Mika and Kane-Sakura could go out on our own. It would just be us girls, no guys. The experience would be great for training her skills.” Yuki offered. “Plus, you'd be able to get away from her for a while.”

InuYasha looked as though he were giving her question serious thought, pondering and pensively considering the idea. Once he'd given it thought, weighing both of the outcomes to letting his sister go he straight out answered, “No.”

“Huh? All that time just to say one word?” His half-sister asked.

“Had you goin' there, didn't I? `No' was the first answer that I came to the second you asked it!” He laughed mockingly.

`What's he laughing about?' Kane thought. “Hello, Yuki! Can I come out now?!” She yelled as she pounded on the barrier.

She didn't even take notice of Kane's pounding. “InuYasha, this may be the best thing for Kane's training! Battling us isn't going to gain experience because we always go easy on her. If she doesn't learn other skills from other sources…”

“She doesn't need any other sources for her training!” InuYasha argued, closing the distance between him and Yuki. “And would you rather I not go easy on her and kill her?!”

“That's not what I meant and you know it!” Yuki transformed into her battle black and blue striped body suit; it was so tight on her that it looked to be a second skin. “Besides, the `training' you do with her is nothing by arguing!”

“We do not argue all the time!”

“You do too!”

“Not!”

“TOO!!” Butterflies swirled around in a vortex of gleaming white and purple; the sight was truly beautiful, yet deadly at the same time. “Get some reason through that damnably thick skull of yours!”

He stepped back in trepidation. Kane wanted to too, but her encasing gave her no chance whatsoever. “Yuki, stop this nonsense!” Kane yelled out, fear for her brother's life pounding in her heart. But she either didn't hear her or ignored her entirely because she advanced towards InuYasha. `Is this why she encased me? Does she really want to kill my brother? Why?! This can't be the reason she wanted to come with us, she couldn't have lied to us!' Kane's head spun with unwanted thoughts. `InuYasha, I…I need to save you!'

“Yuki, don't hurt your brother!” Michi called out, running towards her indignant friend. Mika and Setsuna were ahead of her by a demon's leap, but they weren't close enough to Yuki to even have a chance of saving InuYasha should she attack.

“I thought we trusted you!” Kane screamed in desperation. “SO STOP THIS RIGHT NOW!!” Without warning, Kane felt a butterfly sensation in her gut that she couldn't comprehend. “Eh?!”

An overwhelming surge of power was felt by the whole group, except for Yuki who was still enveloped in her own strength. Setsuna felt the wave come from Kane and he carefully glanced over to his left, where Kane was still in her bubble. His eyes widened to the size of full moons as he stared at the glowing mass that was Kane-Sakura.

CRICK! CRACK! Yuki's barrier began to shatter around Kane while the gentle butterfly sensation escalated to enormous pain. She shrieked in a high pitch once it became too painful to bear.

Ignoring Yuki, InuYasha glanced over at his sister. “Kane!” He rushed over to her. `Something's happening to her, but what?!'

When InuYasha dashed past her, Yuki calmed down and finally felt the surge of power coming from Kane. She turned to see her barrier disintegrating right before her eyes. She hollered, “No closer!” Both InuYasha and Setsuna screeched to a halt to stare at Yuki. “That barrier is breaking because she's unleashing some kind of power from her body! If it's released while you're close, you'll not only get caught in the blast of her power, but my barrier will make it ten times stronger! You could die!”

Setsuna growled, which made everybody, including the dog-demon, jump back in surprise. “And what about Kane-Sakura, will she be okay?!”

“It's her power that's breaking my barrier, and my guess is that something has awakened within her because of me threatening our half-brother.” Yuki closed her eyes. “She will be fine, as long as the barrier surrounding her breaks before the power's full potential is shown.”

“Then take down your barrier before…”

“It's not that simple.” She hushed Setsuna. “My barrier is beyond my control now, all we can do is get out of the way before it breaks and causes all of us physical harm.”

“Isn't there some way we can try to save her?” Michi asked.

Yuki walked up to the barrier and put her hand on it. She studied it carefully, as if communicating with it to see what troubled it. “There is no other way…it all depends on the extent of her power's damage.”

Something wasn't agreeing with InuYasha though. “If these are her powers, why are they going to hurt her?”

“If she wasn't encased in my barrier, her awakening wouldn't have ended up like this. You see,” She turned to the group. “It contains her powers and it's too small of a space to hold so much strength. It's bouncing off the walls, causing it to break. When it shatters…” Yuki was interrupted by an uproar of what sounded like splintering glass. She turned just in time to see beams of brilliant light burst from the cracks on her barricade. “Get away from here, quickly!” She ran over to the foliage with the rest of the group. But it was Setsuna who rushed in the opposite direction, towards Kane's barrier.

“That baka! He's rushing to his own death!” InuYasha shielded his eyes from the dazzling illumination.

“Setsuna, get back here!” Yuki yelled. “You'll be killed…!”

“I don't care! She needs me right now!” He kept running into the light. As if on cue, the little barrier encasing Kane exploded and shattered into millions of little shards of glass. Kane screamed again as the force within her was finally set free from its prison of flesh and mystical barrier. And after that, the full potential of her power turned the entire field into diamonds, obliterating the life of the plants and any animals that got caught in the blast.

The dust settled on the field from the explosion, showing Kane in the arms of Setsuna as he held her off of the ground. His body was glowing in his fire powers as he looked down upon her sleeping frame. `Thank Kami, she's okay…' His fire subsided and he dropped to his knees. `So…weak…'

“Setsuna, are you crazy or something?!” Mika yelled. “You coulda died out here from her power!”

“I knew the risks Mika and I didn't care. I promised her I'd always keep an eye on her and keep her from harm.” He looked up at them. “InuYasha, take Kane for me. I need to talk to these girls about what just happened.”

“Is there some reason I can't here any of this from you?” InuYasha asked, taking Kane into his arms.

“Because,” Setsuna paused and smiled. “This happened to me when I was younger.”

InuYasha nodded and turned to walk away. They watched as his red and silver form disappeared in the brush and his scent had died off. It was only then that Setsuna laid back on the grass and put his hand on his head, wincing against the pain.

“What's wrong with you fish-breath?” Mika inquired, sitting beside him.

“I…I think I bumped my head or something hit me hard on the back of my skull.” He stated. “I feel dizzy…”

“It's probably a concussion.” Yuki said sadly. “I'm so sorry, this is all my fault.”

“Hey, look on the bright side.” Mika stated cheerfully.

Yuki glared at her half-sister. “What bright side could there possibly be in all this?!”

“Watch the noise level please.” Setsuna said, covering his ears. “You're giving me an even worse headache.”

“We've discovered the power that demons are after her for.”

“She's been sought after by various demons because of this hidden power that just awakened?” Michi thought it over. “But it doesn't make sense. If Kane didn't even know about it, how come these other demons did?”

“That isn't the power demons seek.” Setsuna stated. “Though it is a dangerous weapon against enemies, it's one that nobody knew about until the proper time.”

“The proper time? What's that got to do with her making this meadow into a giant diamonized field of doom?” Mika stood, taking in the view that lay before her.

“It's called Kizukaseru and only a few select demi-demons receive it.”

Yuki nodded. “I've heard of this phenomenon before, I just never thought I'd witness it.”

“Kizukaseru? Awakening?” Michi felt confused.

“Yes, only a chosen few demi-demons are given this at birth, it just remains dormant until the proper time. It's not passed down or inherited through ceremonies, it's given to only a select few partial demons. They could have evil intentions, be pure of heart, or be somewhere in between.” Setsuna sat up again. “Why certain demi-demons are bestowed it is a mystery, all I know is that it has to do with how the demon and human bloods are mixed. If combined right, this special power stays hidden away until…” He paused to see if they were following.

“Until when?” Yuki asked.

“Well, normally it's when the demi-demon is threatened to the point of death, but we all know Kane has been almost killed by other demons. That's what's really got me confused.” Setsuna thought it over. “Perhaps it was because she felt threatened for her brother since you were attacking him.”

Yuki looked away shamefully. “I wasn't really going to hurt him. My body armor just reacts with my emotions and it appeared when I got angry.”

“You said this happened to you too, right?” Michi asked. “Do you really have Kizukaseru?”

“Hai, I do.” Setsuna remarked. “It happened a little over a year ago, when I came to Kaeda's village to confront InuYasha. Mine didn't happen so dramatically because when I was near death, it just appeared. Then during my following battle against another demon, I felt this butterfly sensation in my gut and the flames leapt out at demon and obliterated him on the spot, along with the rest of the area.” He stood, but almost fell again from lightheadedness. “I now have full control over my Kizukaseru and I can use it during a battle at any time.”

“What's it called?” Mika asked, helping him to stand up straight.

“Jigoku Gekido, Fury of Hell. I used it with Kane's Kireinagare to defeat Ren-Tao.” Setsuna looked on at the field of diamonds. “But hers has much more power than mine does, `cause I didn't obliterate an entire field, just a small section of the forest.”

“We should get going now. I'm sure Kane's gonna be wondering where we all went.” Michi stated.

Setsuna took one shaky step. “More than ever before, Kane's going to need protection. Now that she's awakened, demons from all over will seek to end her life, including Ren-Tao.”

Mika looked over at him in utter surprise. `Did he say Ren-Tao? I thought they had beaten him to a pulp.' “Setsuna, what do you mean, `including Ren-Tao'?”

“We didn't destroy him, I can just feel it. When we unleashed our attack on him, it didn't feel like we had hit him full force. He's hiding somewhere yet, thriving and rebuilding himself I'm sure.”

“How can you be certain?” Mika still seemed lost.

“Because if we had destroyed him, Naraku would be loose once again. And we haven't seen or heard anything about him in ages.” Setsuna stated. “Ren-Tao's alive, and he's going to go after Kane-Sakura not only because he wishes vengeance, but now because she carries Kizukaseru.”

The darkness seemed to swallow Kane whole. She drifted through dreams; some were horrible memories, others were bits and pieces of what could be the future. But all of them contained one face in particular, Setsuna's. One of them was almost like having a vision as she saw herself in third person in a hot spring with Setsuna. The memory she distinctly remembered was the day she'd been raped by Trowa. Setsuna had been the one that had comforted her and stayed by her side when she felt lost and hopeless for those long two weeks.

A dull ache caused her to notice that she was dreaming, not reliving things. When she tried to open her three-ton eyelids, the light pierced her pupils like knives. It wasn't sunlight that she was looking into, but it was bright enough that it hurt to open her eyes even the tiniest crack. Kane squeezed her eyes and then tried again. The light wasn't so bad this time and once her vision had cleared, she recognized her surroundings to be Kaeda's hut. The gentle light had been the fire that was still going in the small fire pit in the center of the hut; it danced on the walls and ceiling, turning them orange and yellow as the flames tangoed. Kane blinked, then looked out the lone window. On his usual branch in his favorite tree sat her sleeping brother. A sense of comfort ran down her spine when she saw him holding Tetsusaiga close to his chest so he could easily unsheathe it and protect the sleeping village should harm befall it on such a peaceful night.

Her gaze returned to the interior of the hut. She carefully sat up and faced the inferno head on to adjust her eyes and then looked about the hut. Right across from her slept Mika and Michi, both against sitting up against the wall. Subconsciously, Mika scratched her head with her hand and relaxed again. Michi must've been having a violent dream as she nearly smacked Mika on the face with her Kazanna hand. Yuki was lying on the ground, her front facing the wall the other two leaned on, away from Kane. Her even breathing and small snores told Kane that she was asleep. Myrako was only a few feet away, also snoring lightly, and sucking her thumb. Kane giggled and looked down at Kaeda as she laid on her own mat closest to the door. She snored loudly, giving Kane the impression that she too was deep in sleep.

Even though she'd slept for many hours already, Kane felt her eyes become heavy with sleep. She rolled onto her other side and snuggled into something warm and comforting. `Wait a minute, was this here the last time I'd checked?' Kane's eyes shot open to see that she was cuddling up to somebody's hard chest. She almost screamed in fright, until she saw the face of the man who lay beside her in his kimono, his hair askew from coming undone of its usual captive. She reached up and touched his face and ran her fingers through his hair to make sure he was really there; he responded by softly moaning in his sleep, stretching his arms and then settling one on top of her, like he was keeping Kane from harm. She felt safe, so safe with this man that she could've walked through hell and know she'd still be alive. Then again, with his great fire powers, she knew for sure that Setsuna would make it out alive as well. Remembering that, Kane let her eyes close and fell asleep again.

“Over there, it's over there!” Mika yelled as she unsheathed Zei.

“Surround it; we won't let it get away!” Michi stuck her staff into the ground and started to take her rosary off to unleash her Kazaana. Yuki stopped her.

“It's got Kane, remember?” She stated, putting her hand on Michi's hand to keep her beads on.

“She's right Michi, you'll defeat the demon but you'll send Kane into oblivion.” Setsuna said, his eyes converting from emerald to the swirling colors of a giant inferno.

“Hey guys, a little help here?!” Kane's sword had been drawn and was transformed, but she couldn't move her arms; her entire body was being held in the giant palm of an itachi demon.

“We're coming Kane, just hang on!” Mika shouted.

“Hang on?! The demon's doing the hanging on for me, now get me down!”

The sky behind the group blackened, signaling that help was on the way. Thunder resounded in the background as lightning struck the ground near the weasel demon. From on top of a black thunder cloud, Ori stood and looked down upon the demon. He closed his eyes and focused all of his energy on the next lightning bolt, which hit the demon (and Kane) dead on target. It scared the demon and he dropped the fried dog onto the ground. “Michi, do it now love!” Ori yelled from his cloud.

“Kazaana!” She called out after opening her Wind Tunnel. As she sucked up the demon, Setsuna noticed Kane moving in the direction of the wind and sprawled himself on top of Kane to keep her from being sucked into God knows where. She drew in the demon, leaving nothing behind. Once her strongest weapon was safely covered again, Setsuna sat up and helped Kane up. She was all black from getting fried to a crisp, courtesy of Ori's Thunder Bolt. Her hair was curly, but stood on end.

Mika laughed it out. “Kane, I see you decided to go with that perm you were talking about; looks good.”

“Shizuka-ni wolf breath! I'm in no mood to be teased, especially by the likes of you!” Kane attempted to straighten out her long mane, but it popped back up instantly. This only provoked more laughter from Mika and to get some giggles from the rest of the group, except Setsuna of course. “Keh!” She sheathed Teretsu and stood up.

“Ooh, the doggie's mad. Watch out for the angry poofy poodle!” Mika was now rolling on the ground in laughter and the majority of the others were trying their best to suppress some of the laughter.

Before she could retort, Setsuna took her hand and asked, “Are you hurt?”

“I'm fine, though my pride might be a little bruised.” She reluctantly took her hand away and blushed. “What I don't like is constantly being picked up, thrown around like a rag doll, and burnt to a crisp by all of these demons.”

“How many has that been since your awakening?” Ori asked her.

“Since last week, about twenty-seven demons; three of which came back more than once after escaping.” Kane answered. `I'm sure more are to come, but how much more of this can I take; not to mention how much longer until one of them succeeds in killing me?' She thought.

Setsuna must've noticed her unease because he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, saying, “Excuse us.” He led her into a deeper part of the forest. Once they were far away enough, he asked, “Is something bothering you?”

“Yeah, the fact that I can't defend myself. You guys have rescued me so many times, but I can't even manage…” He pressed two fingers to her lips.

“I honestly don't mind protecting you. I won't let anybody hurt you, ever again; I promise.”

`He's talking about Trowa.' Tears brimmed in her eyes, she attempted to hide them by looking away, but Setsuna put his hand under her chin.

“Forget about him; it's in the past and he's gone.” Setsuna took her in his arms and embraced her trembling body. “I won't let anybody else hurt you like that again.”

Kane sobbed. “I thought…I was o-over it, but I-I guess…”

Setsuna smiled reassuringly. “Something like that isn't worth brooding over too long, but when you feel the urge to cry over it, I'll be here.”

“Thank you Setsuna. Thank you so much.”

A scream resounded from where Kane and Setsuna had come from. It penetrated her ears, causing them to lay back momentarily against her head. From the deepness that it carried, she could tell easily that the one who had screamed had been, “Mika!”

Setsuna let go of Kane as she dashed towards the field they had left behind; he followed, then came in front of her just before they reached their friends. He put an arm in front of her to keep her back when she saw a demon dangling Mika off the ground by her neck. But this was no ordinary demon, this one she knew from a previous encounter. “Sesshomaru! Put her down!” Kane again tried to approach him, but Setsuna kept his arm out.

“Nng!” Mika held his hand that grasped her neck, trying desperately to release herself before she lost consciousness. `Kane, don't try anything stupid!' She pleaded in her head.

The butterfly sensation was growing in her stomach again. “Sesshomaru, what do you want now?! I thought you had learned your lesson the last time you had shown up!” Kane ground out between clenched teeth. “I'm the one you want, so put her down!”

He smirked, but retained his grip on her neck. “Give me your powers now or all of your friends here will suffer the fate you most certainly deserve.”

“You want what?!” Kane asked as her eyes widened.

“Very well, they'll pay for your stupidity.” His poison talons on his hand activated and a green glow blazed from his nails as he dug them into Mika's neck.
