InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Hidden Past, Hidden Self ❯ Season of Love ( Chapter 35 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

I do not own any of the InuYasha characters mentioned in this fanfic. I do however own Kane-Sakura and Setsuna, and my friends own Mika and Nakura (Steph), Michi and Ori (Nicky), and Yuki and Akira (Danielle).

Merry Christmas everyone!! I wrote this fanfic for Christmas because I felt that this Christmas for the entire group should be special, especially since Kane and Setsuna are married and expecting twins, Yuki and Akira have never celebrated Christmas with the group, and I wanted to spread some holiday cheer with these characters.

One more thing. After this chapter, I will be starting a new movie called `Only Time…'. It's a great movie with lots of suspense, romance (definitely a lot of that since it's the main theme), and action. This movie isn't as humorous as my big story (if you find this one funny, that's a big find. I don't have a very good sense of humor), but to make it up, it's full of everything else. Now that I've updated this, I feel better.

Chapter 35: Season of Love

In the studio, the music died out as did the girls' singing. When they heard Ori say, “Okay girls, the recording has been shut off,” they sighed in relief. Michi rubbed her forehead as she relaxed on her stool, holding her drumsticks. “Well, that's another song down. How many more do we have?”

Kane placed her acoustic guitar down and grabbed a towel. “There's only four more. And two of them are with the guys.”

“Kane, you're insane!” Mika yelled. “I'm tired of singing all these songs and my hand hurts from strumming the guitar all the time!” She complained as she gulped some water down.

“Listen to this Mika. The last two songs we need to do by ourselves are simple. In fact, one of them is a` cappella while the other one is a lot of piano with harps and bells. So don't stress out over this. We'll be done before we know it.”

Setsuna entered the room, holding his bass guitar. “Kane, don't you think we should take the rest of the day off? We've recorded over three-quarters of the songs for the album. Devastate has only two more songs, both of which are with you guys.”

“Yeah Kane,” Yuki stated. “My fingers and hands are all cramped up.”

Kane shook her head. “We can't. This album has to be edited in time for Christmas, which is in two weeks.” She wasn't in the best of moods. Her hormones were unbalanced and she felt like she was retaining more water than a whale. She wanted to finish this now and not later.

“But Kane,” Setsuna reasoned. “I need to finish Christmas shopping. And I'm sure the others want to do the same.” He put his bass down and walked over to her. “Plus I think you're getting tired too.”

“Setsuna, I…” She sighed. “Fine, we'll resume this in two days. That should be enough time to `recover'.”

The girls all cheered happily and rushed out of the recording studio. Setsuna stayed with Kane as she tuned her guitar before putting it away in its case. When she was done, he offered her his hand, which she took and laced her fingers with his. “I think you're pushing yourself too much.” He stated. “Did it ever occur to you that you're expecting twins and you need your rest?”

As she shrugged on her coat, she pointed out, “Setsuna, I'm still in my first trimester. Once I reach the third trimester, then you can convince me to rest more. But right now…” He interrupted her with a kiss on the lips. “What was that for?”

He pointed up and in the door way was a little sprig of mistletoe. She smirked. “Cheater.”

“Hey, it made you stop talking, so…” He stated as he exited the studio doors and stepped onto the sidewalk. Suddenly, he was hit with a snowball. “Hey!”

Kane giggled. “That's what you deserve, you baka.” She laughed some more, until she got a snowball in the face. “Oh, that's it! You are going down!” She started chasing her husband and throwing snowballs at the same time, who in turn returned the favor a couple times.

After five minutes of that, they collapsed in each other's arms in a snow bank. They were soaking and red from being cold, but they were happy nonetheless. Laughing as he held her, he kissed her tightly on the lips. “You know, most of the songs we did are really about you.”

Kane sighed against his mouth. “How so?”

“When I wrote the songs with the guys, we came up with a ton of lovey-dovey songs that I think you'll find romantic and warm.” He whispered.

She sat up, smiling. “Wow, lovey-dovey. That's not like you guys.”

He helped her stand up and brushed the snow off of her and himself. “I'll make hot chocolate if you want.”

“That would be wonderful.” She said and threw one last snowball in his face before running away laughing.

That same night, the girls invited everyone over to their apartment for dinner and tree decorating. Everyone arrived at pretty much the same time, except for Kane and Setsuna who had to warm themselves up with hot chocolate and change their clothes.

Michi answered the door and invited the couple in. She took their coats and said, “Kane, that sweater looks fantastic! Where did you get it?”

“Believe it or not, I got it from Motherhood Fashions in the mall. I got it just yesterday.” Her white sweater had fur trim on the collar and ran down the front like a button up sweater, only without the buttons. She wore comfortable jeans and white boots with fur trim. “Do you really like it?”

“Yeah, it's really pretty.” Michi stated. “But why are you wearing a maternity shirt already?”

Kane blushed. “Well, I've gained a little weight already, so I figured I'd wear this so I don't look so fat.”

Setsuna laughed and took her hand. “Very funny Kane; you're not fat and you know it.”

As Michi walked away and led them into the apartment, Kane commented, “I am too. I've already gained ten pounds.” She huffed. “And most of it is water retention.”

Mika snickered. “Good to hear you're admitting your fat.”

“Thanks Mika.” Kane said angrily.

They all sat for dinner at the table in the kitchen and chatted about what the Christmas plans were and what they were going to do for New Years. “You know, we could host a little party here for Christmas. We are decorating the tree after dinner.” Yuki stated.

“Why not at our apartment?” Akira stated. “I think we should host it since you're all hosting a pre-Christmas get-together.”

Michi decided to stop the conversation and interrupted with, “So Akira, how are you adjusting to the future?”

He looked at her. “It's not bad; drum lessons are a pain in the butt, but I think I'll manage. And all of this `technology' gives me a headache some times.”

“You'll get used to it. We all did within a matter of weeks.” Mika commented with a mouth full of casserole.

Akira frowned. “But what's with this celebration you keep talking about? Decorating the tree, special dinners, parties, presents, `Christmas songs'. I don't know what they all mean.”

“It's a special celebration of family and friends.” Kane began, knowing she was the one with more information than the others. “Every year, on December 25, family and friends get together to celebrate Christmas. It's more of a Western tradition, but we adopted it after World War II. Anyway, we exchange gifts with our loved ones and have dinner. Before the actual day of Christmas, we decorate an evergreen tree with garland, glass balls, and a tree topper like an angel or a star. There are Christmas songs on the radio and people are in a giving mood for pretty much the entire month of December.”

“So what exactly are we celebrating? Why during this time?” He asked. “Why not later or earlier in the year?”

“It's the designated day we celebrate it. And why? Well according to Western culture, they celebrate the birth of the Christ. They exchange gifts to signify what Christ gave to them; he came down from heaven and was born a lowly birth, in a stable to the Virgin Mary and Joseph.” Kane smiled. “It's quite a story actually. I'll tell it later if you want me to.”

“I'd like that.” Akira stated. “But what puzzles me is how she conceived and remained a virgin.”

“That's a part of the story I'll tell later.” Kane commented, after almost snorting her milk out of her nose. “Anyway, I think me and Setsuna should host a New Year's party. We could make it a tradition.” Kane stated happily. “And Christmas could be rotated every year.”

Mika smiled and said, “You know what, that's not a half-bad idea.” She took her plate to the sink and gathered everyone else's. As Mika, Michi and Yuki cleaned up the kitchen, everyone else went to the living room to find the decorations and the tree ready for them to start on.

Kane put the garland on the tree and wrapped it like an expert. Ori tested the lights with his electrical power, Nakura trimmed the tree, and Akira stood off and watched them. Setsuna set to lighting some holiday candles and joined him afterwards. He stared at Kane as she continued with the lights Ori had charged. She giggled as he told her something funny and he smiled. Akira glanced over at his companion. “Hideik, you seem unusually happy tonight.”

“Why shouldn't I be happy? My life is just about perfect; I'm married to the love of my life who's carrying my heirs; Devastate and DK-9's albums are almost done and ready for release.” Setsuna only grinned like an idiot as Kane looked back at him and smiled at him. “Life's spectacular.”

“Hey Hideik, get you butt over here! We need you to do something to the tree besides just stare at it!” Ori called out.

Kane turned back to the tree and looked at the top. “Hey, he could put the topper on the tree.” She bent over and picked up a porcelain angel that was trimmed in a gold gown. Her halo and candle she held were lights that would really make the tree look its best.

He smiled and walked over to her to take the angel. He climbed the ladder, placing the angel at the top and plugging her in to the last socket on top of the tree. The whole tree was now aglow and it looked spectacular. Akira's breath was taken away at the sight of the magnificent tree. `So this is the joy of Christmas.'

Yuki, Michi, and Mika entered the room and sighed in awe. They stood near the tree and talked about how beautiful it was, commenting the group on their choice of decorations. Yuki joined Akira and took his hand in hers. “Getting the idea of what Christmas is?”

He nodded, speechless. “I…I've never seen something like this before.” He squeezed her hand.

“Get ready for more things to come, Akira.” Yuki stated, looking out the window. “Before we know it, the entire city will be lit up with Christmas lights. You won't know what hit you.”

Setsuna sat at the kitchen table, eating some cereal for breakfast. A thud on the door meant that the daily paper had arrived, so he rose to get it. He picked it up, took off the rubber band and began to read the front page. His foot falls stopped when he saw the picture on the front.

A sleepy Kane-Sakura entered the living room from their bedroom and yawned. “Good morning, did you sleep all right?” When he didn't answer, Kane stopped rubbing her eyes and walked over to him as he stared in disbelief at the morning paper. “Something wrong?”

He snapped out of his trance when she touched his arm. He looked at her, and then turned the paper so she could look at it too. What she saw surprised her. On the front was a picture of her and Setsuna, kissing in the snow bank. In the right hand corner of the picture was a close-up of Kane's left hand, with the wedding band on her finger. And then she read the title: `Local Rock Band Members Melt the Snow'.

“How did our picture get in the paper?” Kane asked. But Setsuna only handed her the paper so she could read the article. She did so with trembling fingers that only shook more as she read on.

`Seventeen year-old Sugimoto Kane-Sakura of the rock band DK-9 was caught outside of the recording studio with Hideik Setsuna of Devastate kissing in a snow bank. The two groups are working on a Christmas album together and plan on releasing it next week. But could this little love tryst between the two band members be the reason the groups are working together?

`Rumors have it that Sugimoto and Hideik married at a private ceremony at Higurashi shrine. Many ministers and Shinto shrine priests are outraged that such young a couple could be married legally. “Marrying at seventeen can be a very wrong decision for these two; later on they may find themselves in hot water and in the middle of a divorce.” Shinto priest Hanzaki Kyo commented. “Just wait a few years.”

`With teen pregnancy being as high as it is, having teens marry only makes the situation worse. Because these two will soon be highly regarded celebrities critics everywhere are keeping an eye on the bands.

`And what makes this story very interesting is the fact that Kane-Sakura may be pregnant (picture on back).' Kane instantly turned over the paper and gasped. It was a picture of her buying the maternity sweater from Motherhood Fashions. She dropped the paper. “Setsuna, what are we going to do?” She fought back tears. “How did this get out to the media?”

Setsuna took her into his arms. “Kane, this isn't the worst thing in the world. We…” A knock came to the door and Setsuna let her go to check the peep hole. Outside, he saw reporters with cameras and notepads. “Hot damn, news travels fast.” He turned back to his crying wife. “Kane, we need to get to the girls' apartment. We've got buzzards at our door.”

He calmly walked over the phone and called the girls. Mika answered the phone grumpily since she'd just woken up and she wasn't a morning person. After explaining the situation, she told him she'd take care of it. A few minutes later, they heard Mika's loud yelling as she moved the reporters a side and told them to leave. Almost ten minutes later, she knocked on the door. Setsuna opened it and found a grumpy Mika in her bath robe.

“What is going on around here?” She entered the apartment and shut the door soundly behind her. “You two are the featured story of the paper.”

Kane stepped forward. “Someone must have been spying on us. That has to be the only way. How'd they know we had an album coming out or that we were married?” Fresh tears made their way down her cheeks. “This means that we'll never be able to go out again without people staring or reporters approaching me or without my picture being snapped on cell phone cameras.”

“We knew that fame was going to make this happen, but we never thought it would be this bad. And so soon.” Mika sighed. “Either way, we need to keep going on that album. By tomorrow the media should have calmed down some, but for now stay in the apartment. Don't answer the door to anyone but us.”

The Hideiks held each other by the waists and nodded. Mika left soon after she'd explained what to do and they were left alone in their apartment.

“The whole city knows.” Kane stated, putting a gentle hand over the small mound of her belly. “They know about my pregnancy and they'll learn about the twins when they're born in six months.”

“Kane…”

“You know they will. With the media breathing down our backs, our children will be born and known about almost instantly. School will never be the same, and Tokyo will know everything about us.” Kane could only look down at the paper that lay at her feet.

“We'll find a way to get through this Kane.” Setsuna stated, hugging her close again. “I promise that we'll get through this.”

The next morning, the plan was to get up as early as possible to leave for the studio. At four-thirty in the morning, they got to the studio unnoticed and without followers. Unfortunately, both Kane and Setsuna were tired from too many calls during the night from reporters. It wasn't until Setsuna told one of the reporters to f-off and he disconnected the phone that the calls stopped. They decided that it would be best to change their number and keep it unlisted in the phone books and on the internet. Until then, they had Kane's cell phone to depend on.

After a cappuccino and an energy booster, Kane was awake enough to hold her guitar and play the correct notes and rhythms. Their first song was `12/24 Sarajevo' which involved every member of both groups. Mika and Nakura were on lead electric guitars with Kane being harmony electric. Michi played the drums of course and Ori took keyboard. Yuki took the violin and Setsuna stuck with the bass. Meanwhile, Akira took the bells and trumpet since he'd learned those literally over night and both of them were played at different times.

They practiced the song a couple times before they decided they were ready to record. In one take, the song was done. The girls finished off their songs, `The Angel Song' and `Carol of the Bells' and took a break while Kane and Setsuna practiced their final song, `Season of Love'.

Setsuna sang his verse and waited for Kane to sing with him in the refrain, but she never did. When he looked up, she was breathing hard and sweating. “Kane, are you…?” He managed to say those three words just before she fell to her side, off of the stool and into his arms after he had leapt from his own stool. “Kane! What's wrong?!”

She continued to breathe heavily, but answered, “My chest…can't breathe…cold…”

“Mika, get in here!” Setsuna called as he held his wife.

“Oh now wha…” Her complaint trailed off as she entered and she quickly got down on the floor next to the couple. “What happened?”

“She just…collapsed.” Setsuna felt her forehead and then his own. “She's burning up.”

Mika sniffed her over once, and stood. “It's exhaustion. She's not sick, but she should rest.” Mika looked over at the little couch in the studio. “All of the stress from yesterday and the day before is finally catching up with her. She's been pushing herself too hard with this album. It doesn't help any that her energy is already drained from carrying two pups.”

“What should we do?” Setsuna wiped her brow and stood to face Mika.

“Wait I guess. If she can't do anything, we can't finish the album.”

“N-no.” Kane said breathlessly. “We need to have it done. The paper…”

Setsuna crouched by his wife again and took her hand. “I don't care what the paper says. If we can't get it out by next week, then we can't. Don't let the tabloids rule your life.”

Michi came in and found the situation. “Is Kane all right?” She watched as the two exchanged words and as Kane finally sat up. “Mika, what's going on?”

“Kane, take it easy…”

“No, I'll be fine.” She smiled a little. “I can rest after we finish the song.”

Setsuna turned to them. “I promise I'll make her lie down when we get home.” He turned back to her to help her stand.

“And just how do you propose you finish the song?” Mika asked. “She can't even stand on her own.”

“Easy,” Setsuna stated, holding Kane from behind in front of the microphone. “I'll hold her up.”

Mika started to protest, but shrugged in defeat. “We'll be watching. Keep her warm; that fever needs to be sweated out of her.”

Setsuna nodded as she went out of the room with Michi.

From behind the glass observation window, the remaining members of Devastate and DK-9 watched as Setsuna held his wife as they stood before the microphone. The pre-recorded music started and Kane began to sing in a strong voice, getting her vigor from her husband's loving embrace.

Season of Love

Kane:

Where a prayer could be enough
Our hands open up and give a little more
Crowded hearts make room
Kindness falls like the snow
Tenderness like a row of dominoes

Chorus (Kane only)
Season of love
A chance to shine in the darkness
To be hope, to give joy
All over the world it's Christmas
Season of love
Christ is here with us
In our hearts, through our hands
Love is the season

Setsuna:

Holy Infant Son of God
(Both) You are the light inside (Setsuna) every one of us
(Both) Miracle on earth
(Kane) We see your star (Setsuna: Love) Feel your peace (Setsuna: Feel your peace)
You are why (Setsuna: You are…) This will (Both) always be the…

Chorus (Kane and Setsuna)
Season of love
A chance to shine in the darkness
To be hope, to give joy
All over the world it's Christmas
Season of love
Christ is here with us
In our hearts, through our hands
Love is the season

(Guitar Bridge)

Chorus (Kane only)
Season of love
A chance to shine in the darkness
To be hope (of our joy), to give joy (in our hands)
(Both) All over the world it's Christmas
Season of love

(Setsuna) Of our joy, in our hands
(Kane) This is the season to hold you dear
(Setsuna) Hold you dear, through our hands
(Kane) In our hearts, love is the season
Christmas time in the city…

As the song died out, Setsuna sighed as Kane leaned back into him. “Thanks Setsuna, I needed that.”

He smiled and kissed her forehead. “Don't mention it; you are my wife after all.”

***

Cradling her in his arms, Setsuna prepared to go outside and face the crowd. Kane slept soundly against his breast, and what he was about to do would probably wake her, but it needed to be done. He opened the door to the front of the studio and sure enough, there were reporters waiting for him and Kane to emerge. The second the saw who it was, they rushed at him, asking all at once, “Is it true that DK-9 and Devastate are only working together because of your marriage?” “Is she pregnant?” “Why did you get married so early in life?” “What's your story?”

Setsuna stood there, and bellowed. “Listen up and listen good!” They shut up and watched as he tightened his hold on Kane. “I don't know who the idiot was that got that story in the paper, but everything he wrote isn't true! To start off, DK-9 and Devastate did this not because of my relationship with Kane, but because we're all friends to begin with. And nothing you write can change that!

“Yes, it's true we married at a young age, but we are in love. Don't say that I'm blind and a celebrity that will only divorce her when I feel like it because it isn't true. We met way before any of this band stuff started and fell in love before our songs were even thought of. And she's the love of my life; my second half and my whole universe. And our love is so great that we created something from it; and she's carrying it within her right now. Yes, she's pregnant with my children; we're expecting twins to let you know.

“But because of your constant bothersome gold-digging, you've caused us great distress and quite honestly my wife can't take that in such a fragile condition. If I ever find another story in the newspaper considering our marriage, her pregnancy, or anything else about DK-9 or Devastate concerning only us, I swear I'll find the person who did it and file a law-suit so bad on them that their paper will go broke!” That said, he stepped down the stairs and walked between the small crowd of reporters. They stood in silence as he walked away, except for one. He approached Setsuna with deep regret in his eyes.

“Hideik-san, I must apologize for my actions.” The little man said quietly. “I am the one who put that story of you and your wife in the paper. It was inconsiderate of me and I am truly sorry for putting your wife under stress. Had I known the circumstances, I wouldn't have printed that story.”

Setsuna turned and looked at him. His beady little eyes were stuck behind giant spectacles and his hair was as white as the snow. He'd put his pad of paper away and his camera was safely put away in its case. He nodded. “It's almost Christmas, so I'm willing to forgive you. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.” He started to walk off again, until the little man grabbed his arm.

“Hideik-san, my eldest granddaughter is a big fan of Devastate and you are her favorite member. I only did this to prove to her that she couldn't marry you and I never intended the story to even be printed. But I have one request; could you sign this for her?” The man brought out a `Battle of the Bands: Live' CD. Setsuna took it and looked at the back. Sure enough, the songs `Undivided' and `Heaven' were on the back. One was by Devastate, the other only sung by Devastate. “She went to the concert and loved your songs. She claims it's love at first sight, but...”

Setsuna smiled. “No problem. Do you have a marker?”

The man held the CD while Setsuna signed it with his free hand that rested under Kane's knees. “Thank you much. My granddaughter will never let go of this CD knowing you touched it.”

“Sure.” He looked behind the man and saw that the other reporters had left. He bowed to the older man as best he could with Kane in his arms and turned to leave.

(Christmas Day, at the girls' apartment)

Kane rested comfortably on the couch as Setsuna put a comforter over her lap. Now four months pregnant, Kane was glad her hormones weren't so wild anymore. She laughed as Mika opened her present from Nakura; a set of undergarments in black lace. Mika took the box and threw it at his head. He ran for the mistletoe and she took off after him. Then he suddenly disappeared into the little sprig and Mika went sailing past him into the kitchen cabinet. His head appeared in the mistletoe a second later and he sighed because of her hot temper.

Kane got another present, this one from Michi and Ori, and opened it. She undid the box and found some baby clothes, along with another maternity shirt from Motherhood Fashion, this one more for summer. “Thanks Michi and Ori. These will definitely be put to good use.” She smiled sincerely at the couple. She put it next to the other presents from the others, consisting mainly of maternity stuff and baby things. She'd also received some candles from Yuki and Akira had managed to get her a bottle of perfume (only because Yuki knew which one she liked). Now there were no more presents beneath the Christmas tree and everyone was looking over their things to sort them out.

Yuki came out of the kitchen. “Hey you guys, dinner's ready.” She said.

As everyone else got up to go to the kitchen, a noise beneath the tree stopped them dead in their tracks. It was a scratching noise, like there was something stuck in a box. Setsuna laughed and said, “Oh, I guess I forgot a present.” He reached under the tree and brought out a giant sized box with a simple lid on it and holes cut in the sides. “Merry Christmas, Kane.”

She took the box and everyone gathered around to watch her open it. After the lid had been taken off, a little ball of fur came hurtling out of the box and into Kane's arms. She held the little ball of fur as it licked her face, making her laugh because it tickled. “Oh Setsuna, a puppy!” She held out the little dog that barely fit in her palm and squealed in delight. “A long haired Chihuahua! Oh Setsuna, you shouldn't have!”

“That's what you said you wanted, so I got one for you.” `Season of Love' came on the radio as Setsuna and Kane kissed with the little dog in between. It wiggled to get away from the tight embrace, but they soon stopped so their little pet could breathe.

After a happy moment, Mika interrupted with, “Enough with the sappy lovey-dovey junk. Let's eat!” She raced to the kitchen as the others slowly filtered behind her into the kitchen area.

Kane took the puppy with her and grinned. “I think you should name her.”

“I already have one picked out. I'd like to call her Yuri (Japanese for Lily).” Setsuna smiled and put an arm over her shoulders. “Merry Christmas Kane.”

She sighed. “I suppose I owe you now?”

He only smiled suggestively as they joined in the festivities.

The Angel Song
By: Jaci Velasquez

In the chill of the night
While the moon gently sleeps
I wander in silence on snow-laden streets
As I gaze into sunsets over silhouette mountains
I am amazed that the God who made all this, made me

As my eyes were opened I began to believe
The mystery of Christmas was truly revealed
A great host of angels came calling to me
Taking me back to the pure sacred peace

Chorus
Singing la, la, lalala, lalalala, lalalalalala…
There's a Savior born to us today
Singing la, la, lalala, lalalala, lalalalalala…
The Messiah, Christ the Lord

In the light of the angels surrounding my soul
I know for certain I'm never alone
Now let all of your children feel the love that you gave
And in honor of you give it away

Chorus
Singing la, la, lalala, lalalala, lalalalalala…
There's a Savior born to you today
Singing la, la, lalala, lalalala, lalalalalala…
The Messiah, Christ the Lord

Oh yeah, he's born to us today
Singing la, singing la, singing la la la la
Christ the Lord

Singing…

Chorus
Singing la, la, lalala, lalalala, lalalalalala…
There's a Savior born to us today
Singing la, la, lalala, lalalala, lalalalalala…
The Messiah, Christ…

The Messiah, Christ, oh the Lord
The Lord…

I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I'll see you next year.
