Hidden Powers of the Heart Chapter 5
Silence stretched in the wreckage, as each member of the group looked around in shock. Miroku couldn't believe what he saw. No one in history possessed enough power to bring down an entire fortress such as this. Nothing but the foundation masonry was left in this bleak place. He judged that Lady Kagome had been on the ground floor when this all came crashing down. He wondered at the fact that she even made it out on top of it all, for that is where they found her; atop the destruction that covered this small valley. What was once a great Shogun fortress was now just pebbles and tooth picks. The trace amounts of power left over were enough to make Miroku a little dizzy. So confused, that he almost missed the fact that his hand began to tingle madly.
Distractedly, Miroku looked at the offending appendage and gasped. The Kazana was closing before his eyes! “Sango! Look!” he cried, startling both Sango as well as Inuyasha. He held up his hand to show off an unblemished hand, identical to the other. The curse was gone.
“Houshi, I don't understand, What happened?” Sango asked. The had been doggedly pursuing Naraku for so long, the thought of his demise hadn't even crossed her mind.
“Don't you get it, oh love of my existence?” he laughed. “Naraku is gone! Kagome defeated the villain! We are free of him forever!” He rushed over to the Taijya, lifting her easily into the air and twirling her around before setting her gently back to the uneven ground.
Sango was speechless. Her mind would not accept such an outrageous thought. Naraku? dead? It couldn't be. Surely he was only faking, waiting for a time to catch them all off guard, like he did with the false Princess Kaguya. Still, Inuyasha's new form did seem to shed some light on what must have happened, only the story was still too vague.
Sango smiled at Miroku, still confused, but also distracted. “Houshi-sama—“
She was cut off as Miroku caught her in a sweet embrace and kissed her as he had never kissed any woman in his life. Sango melted, forgetting her thoughts, and living only in the moment. If she dared herself to think this was for real, she would only end up getting hurt again. Better enjoy it now, if only for a little while.
“Oi!” Sango's reverie was abruptly cut off by an irate Inuyasha. “What are you two doing? Help me figure out what happened here so we can go rescue Kagome!”
The two jumped apart as if burned by each other, and began looking around once more. Shippo, who had been looking all along, piped up at this moment. “Sango! Come here! It's Kohaku!” Shippo switched to his large pink globe-like form to signal to the taijya. Sango hurried over, careful on the uneven ground. She stopped short and put a hand to her lips when she saw him.
He was beaten and thin. She knelt down by the stricken boy, steeling herself for the worst. Gently, she put an ear to the boy's chest. A heartbeat! Kohaku was alive!
“Inuyasha! Houshi-sama! Come here! Help me with Kohaku!” she called.
Kohaku must have heard her, for he began to stir at her voice. “Ane-ue?” he called meekly. “I had a horrible dream. I dreamed I was someone else, and I couldn't move or talk for myself! It was awful!” he shuddered.
Sango put her arms around him. “It's all ok. It was just a bad dream. You can forget about it. Can you stand? We have to leave this place. It reeks of demons.”
“I think so, Ane-ue,” he replied, standing slowly. He seemed to be alright, just a little weak. He leaned a bit on Sango's shoulder.
Sango looked at Inuyasha and asked, “Now what do we do?”
“We go west, to my brother's fortress. The Palace of the Moon is where he took Kagome. We have to get her back before he carries out his trial.” Inuyasha looked at the ground as he said this.
“Trial? What trial?” Shippo asked, reverting back to his normal form.
“Inu-Youkai do not `steal prey'. If a youkai is caught stealing prey from another, a trial-by-combat takes place. If the thief wins, he is allowed to keep his prize. If he does not, then he forfeits the meat as well as his life. It doesn't happen often, but Sesshoumaru must have been very angry to invoke this tradition,” Inuyasha finished.
No more words were needed. Kagome didn't stand a chance. All quickly found their position by the sun and raced off towards the Western Lands, home of the Inu-youkai clans. Sango and Kohaku rode on Kirara's back, and Shippo found a perch on Miroku's back as he ran. He didn't even consider Inuyasha as a seat. The former hanyou was seething. He wanted Kagome back something fierce, and he was not to be denied.
AN: Been a while. Yeah. Graduated college, moved to a new state, got a real job. Lots been going on. I finally finished the Inuyasha Manga, and I have to say that what really happens is WAY off from my story, but I'm going to continue this as if I didn't know what really happens in the end. (if you would like to read if for free, email me and I will send you a link to read the rest of the manga where the tv series ended. kendochick@yahoo.co m)
