“Where the hell is that bitch?!” Inuyasha cursed loudly as he paced around Kaede's hut.
“Inuyasha please calm down,” Miroku had tried to get the hanyou to settle down for the past two hours and had only succeeded in keeping him from destroying the small hut they were now in.
Kagome had been suppose to return the day before in the early afternoon, but had yet to make an appearance. Her missing presence had them worried, but Shippou was especially distraught. It had stormed the night before and had rained all this day and now the sky was once again turning black and thunder could once again be heard in the sky growling like some rabid blood hungry beast.
Shippou had never weathered storms well, not even when his own parents had been alive, and now with Kagome gone he was nearly inconsolable. When the first crash of thunder boomed loudly through the night sky, two things happened. First, Inuyasha's ears folded back and buried his head in his arms with a slight whimper at the ear shattering noise, and second, Shippou shrieked and burst from the hut running as fast as his legs could carry him toward the well.
He was crouched down and running on all fours tearing up grass and earth as he crossed the path to the well in a few scant minutes. Lightning flashed through the sky and three more booms of thunder sounded before the whimpering and shaking kit jumped into the well. The unearthly light that surrounded him was still too new to the young kit for him to be comfortable with it and it only served to make him shake and shiver harder.
By the time the time slip had dropped him down on his mother's side of the well Shippou was trembling and shaking so hard that he could barely stand. Running and jumping as fast as he could in his panicked state he managed to climb the God tree outside her window and with trembling hands somehow was able to get the window open and slip inside.
“Okaa-san?” he called out. It was so dark here, so very dark. The red lights on her strange sun dial read 3:10 and looked like demonic eyes. Shippou whimpered as he fell to the floor, his trembling legs no longer able to hold him upright. “Mamma!” he called out louder. The shadows were moving, his eyes darted back and forth, he couldn't move. “Mamma!”
Suddenly he was scooped up into a pair of arms and Kagome's scent surrounded him. He turned and buried his face in her shoulder, shaking and sobbing in fright.
“Shhh,” Kagome whispered to her frightened kit as she took him back to her bed and wrapped him up in her shirt. “Oh Shippou you're soaking and freezing!”
Rising from the bed she walked into the bathroom and gathered a towel. Setting the trembling kit on the counter, she removed his rain-soaked clothing and wrapped him up in the large fluffy towel. In the darkness the young kit saw a shock of silvery white behind his mother and whimpered flinging himself into her arms and trying to bury himself in her warm and safe embrace.
Sesshoumaru, awoken by the overwhelming scent of fear as well as the kit's cry for his mother, had followed after Kagome as she had wandered into the bathroom. Standing behind her, he watched as the kits eyes widened and he launched himself into the girl's arms, towel and all. Lifting his clawed hand to the miko's shoulder, Sesshoumaru kissed her hair and turned her slowly, being sure not to startle her or frighten the kit anymore than he already was.
`What happened?' the taiyoukai's golden eyes implored in the darkness and Kagome shook her head.
“I don't know,” she whispered. “Shippou?” she kissed the kit's head and stroked the auburn hair that she had earlier released from the leather strap that held it in its usual high pony tail. “Shippou honey what happened?” her voice was soothing and soft a stark contrast to her child's shaky and whimpering voice.
“Y-you d-didn't c-come you didn't come back,” he whimpered into her shirt. “Its b-been storming for two days.”
“Oh Shippou,” she crooned and hugged him tighter to her. “He's very afraid of storms,” she whispered to the inuyoukai in front of her. “I did come back sweetie, but no you're right I never came back to you. Rin got really sick and nearly died. I brought her and Sesshou-chan here so that my doctors here could make her better. I'm sorry sweetie.” She kissed the kit's temple and carried him back to her room with Sesshoumaru following close behind.
Once they were in her room again, Sesshoumaru regained his position between Rin and the wall and reached for Kagome as she climbed into bed next to him and his daughter. Shippou grew silent and tried hard to make his shaking go away as he moved away from his mother slightly.
“Where are you going Shippou?” she asked.
“I-I should go back,” he said quietly and hesitantly as he began to move away.
“Why?”
“I…” his head was bowed and tears had gathered in the kit's eyes.
“Shippou come here,” Kagome said her voice soft yet commanding. Once the kit was in reach, she wrapped him up in her arms again and held him tightly to her breast. “You are my pup Shippou, My son. And no matter what I will never turn you away. Don't ever think that you aren't welcome wherever I am, understood?”
The kit sniffled and nodded, burying his face against her neck and inhaling his mother's scent. Kagome smiled against his fur and settled down against the pillows turning so that Shippou was settled against Rin, both small children cuddled in the arms of the two holding them.
Golden eyes shone from the window as a hanyou hidden in the blanket of darkness looked on the sleeping pack. His half-brother and the small human pup he traveled with were sleeping in Kagome's bed, with Kagome and Shippou there as well no less. What the hell?
