InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ His Little Girl ❯ The talk ( Chapter 8 )

The sky above was still overcast in dreary grey clouds that only served to dampen the hanyou's mood even more. He couldn't get the image of his brother and Kagome sleeping together out of his mind. Oh sure the pups were between them, but still…wasn't Kagome his? So what if he would slip away for secret happenings with Kikyou. He could have both couldn't he? Couldn't he?

Shaking his head to rid himself of the errant thoughts, he leapt into a branch high in the God tree and bent one leg up on the branch while he let the other dangle off the side. Resting his elbow on his bent knee and holding his chin in his hand, he stared out over the damp lands.

It just doesn't make any sense, I mean sure the wench got us to stop fighting a while ago and ok yeah, so I've caught those two having conversations when neither thought I was near…but she was in bed with him! They were fully clothed, his mind fired back. Aww shuddup!

“Inuyasha.”

He looked down to see Sango standing beneath the tree, her kimono damp as was her hair.

“Hey, Sango.” He gave her a glance out of the corner of his eye and then returned to his gaze the sky.

“Is Shippou alright?” she asked as she settled herself beneath the tree. “I couldn't find him after he ran off.”

“Hmf! The runt's fine, he ran off to Kagome.”

“Oh…Inuyasha…can I…can I talk to you about something?”

“Sure.” He noticed her slip as she tried to climb the wet bark and in a flash of red a silver had her in his arms and back up to the branch he'd been perching in.

“Thanks,” she said her cheeks a rosy flush. “I just don't really want an audience.”

“Hn.”

She looked down at her hands that were clasped together and then out over the muddy wet earth below. Whatever it was the exterminator wanted to talk about it must be important. Inuyasha could sense her unease; this is probably something she'd normally talk to Kagome about the hanyou thought.

“Inuyasha,” she began her voice soft and hesitant. “You're male, ne?”

“Well I should certainly hope so,” he said with a twist of his lips, hoping to lighten the mood. It worked and he could see a small smile on the woman's face, her scent no longer so strong with unease and uncertainty.

“Well, I just mean…you know how men think right? Since you are one.”

“Keh, I guess.”

She looked at her hands again as she spoke. “It's just…I know he probably doesn't mean - and I'm not…well most wouldn't look twice - and I guess since we travel together it's just that it's easier access and-”

“Sango? What are you trying to say?” he asked, his attention now fully on the woman sitting on the branch next to him. Her cheeks blushed crimson as she struggled to say what she wanted.

“…I'm a slayer, a demon exterminator, most men wouldn't look twice, wouldn't even consider me. I'm not a woman in most people's eyes, too rough and well it's just that…Miroku…he - he touches me all the time, and I've caught him spying on me when I bathe but…he-he makes me feel-I,” her voice cut off abruptly and she began trying to climb down.

Inuyasha grabbed her and pulled her into his arms to keep her from falling and hurting herself. She was now sitting against him, her back to his chest, his arms around her resting on her stomach, his head on top of hers. The embrace was warm and brotherly and she remembered how she used to hold Kohaku like this before their village had been destroyed.

She could feel him breath against her back, his breath rustling her hair. He hugged her close as he spoke. “What's wrong Sango? What are you afraid to say?”

“I - I think…I've fallen in love with him…That stupid lecherous monk. He can't keep his hands to himself, and he fondles and hits on every woman he comes across and for some reason, I've fallen in love with him…But I'm an exterminator, and female exterminators don't take husbands, not unless they're fellow exterminators. I'm not really even a woman, not in the way most think of them. I refuse to stay home and tend a hut while someone else does the fighting but…I love him.”

The hanyou smiled as he hugged her a little closer before he spoke. “You're a good woman Sango, you're beautiful, and you'll make a fine strong mate. Any man, youkai or not would be lucky to have you. So what if you fight or have a few scars here or there, they're a testament to your courage and strength. Your pups will grow up knowing that they have a strong brave mother, a mother who doesn't have to rely on her husband for protection. And although he is a lecher, I don't think Miroku goes after you because you're easier to get his hands on. If he wanted that he'd fondle Kagome more, she doesn't hit as hard as you do. Talk to him Sango, I think the houshi loves you as much as you love him.”

Tears gathered in Sango's eyes and she turned fast, nearly falling off the branch if it hadn't been for hanyou reflexes, and wrapped her arms around Inuyasha's waist. He could hear her mumble a `thank you' into his haori and smiled. Pretty soon, if all went well, his pack mates would be mates. He chuckled softly as he wondered if she would still slap him for fondling her bottom after they were mates. Probably.

He looked down at the woman in his arms to find her asleep. She hadn't slept much during the storm either, had these thoughts kept her awake? Either way he was glad to see her sleeping now. He held his pack sister for a moment longer before bounding out of the tree and into Kaede's hut. Walking softly, he carried the sleeping woman over to the drowsy houshi and placed her in his arms.

“Just hold her bouzo,” he said gruffly. “Just let her sleep in your arms. Don't let your hands run away with you.”

Miroku nodded silently, and watched as the hanyou walked back out of the hut. Looking down at the precious form in his arms, he couldn't help but let a small grin light his face. To hold her like this, to feel her warm body against his, he often dreamed of this. Kissing her lips softly, he held her more closely to himself and once again returned to a blissful slumber, his love in his arms.

Kaede smiled from her position on the floor and closed her eyes. Yes, all would be well.

Out in the damp night, the hanyou walked to the well at a slow easy pace. He would be calm, and he would be rational, but he needed to talk to Kagome and see where he stood. He also wanted to know what had happened that had brought his brother and pup into the girl's time. Sitting on the edge of the well as he had seen Kagome do so many times, he let his feet dangle down into the dark depths before pushing off and falling into the time slip.
