“Please be careful koishii,” Kagome said as hugged Sesshoumaru around the waist from behind. “I've no wish to loose you so soon.”
It was nearing sunrise and yet the two new lovers had already been up for a solid hour. They had bathed and dressed, and then after brushing her own hair, Kagome had brushed Sesshoumaru's. He gave a soft lightening of his eyes, a small smile, as he thought of how that woman loved to brush his hair. Although he knew that she held no romantic nor mating intentions toward his brother, part of him was still jealous every time she touched or played with the hanyou's ears. This was silly, he was jealous that he wasn't a hanyou! Shaking the thoughts from his head he turned to look at Kagome and kissed her sweet soft lips.
“You have so little confidence in my battle skills?” he asked teasingly.
“Of course not, I've seen you fight, and at one time I was the one you were fighting, or at least part of the group you were fighting. I know how skilled and beautiful you are when in a fight. But we've fought a both a bat and an ox demon before. They're vicious, horribly so. When we met Shiori a bat hanyou, Inuyasha was nearly killed by her grandfather, and when we fought an ox, I spent so much time trying to clean and bandage all the wounds Inuyasha had. Every time he went to use Tetseiga the ox would run him through with one of his horns. I don't want the same to happen to you. Besides I like you as you are, I don't want Sesshoumaru the flower vase. Do you know how difficult it is to find flowers that don't make you look girly I mean if you had all those holes in you I'd just have to - eek!”
Kagome was pinned to the bed underneath an amused and growling inu taiyoukai.
“Sesshoumaru the flower vase?” he repeated her words. “You would use me as a flower vase?”
“W-well I'd have to find something to fill all those round holes with. What better than flowers? And then Rin can bring new flowers to-mmmm”
She was silenced by a kiss that was as passionate as it was playful. Her hands came up to wrap around his neck and play in his silvery white mane. Oh how she loved his hair. I wonder…she thought and began to rub his ears much like she did with Inuyasha, yup just the same. Ear rubs turn em both into purring puppies! She smiled as the great and powerful Sesshoumaru buried his face in her bosom and purred as he leaned the ear that she was playing with more closely toward her questing hand.
“Are you hungry? I'm sure I can make us something in the kitchen,” she said as she stopped playing with his ears and kissed him once more before they both moved to stand beside the bed. “And if not,” she reached into her backpack and pulled out a few cups of Raman. He enjoyed the instant noodles as much as his brother.
“No.”
“No?” she repeated as they moved to the door that separated Rin's new room from theirs. “No as in no Raman? Or no as in you don't want me to cook?”
“No as in no food at all. I never eat before a challenge. The food will slow me down and I don't want my energy to be diverted. I will eat after the battles are over.”
Moving to his daughter's sleeping side; he sat down on what was once his mother's bed and inwardly chuckled at the picture she made. With the kits both needing and wanting to be fed in the middle of the night, Rin had gotten used to sleeping with bottles of formula either on her chest of under her arm as they were now.
The small girl was laying on her side with three half full bottles of formula tucked under her arm and against her side, each of the three kits in turn were standing on their hind legs, their forepaws resting against her chest and stomach as the sucked greedily from their bottles. Miroku, owning up to his namesake, decided that he was far more interested in Sango then the bottle that he had been sucking on and snuck behind the happily feeding kit and nipped at her rusty red flank. Sango, in turn, whipped around and grabbed the other kits by his neck and threw him to the bed. The two soon began wrestling around and knocked into their brother engaging him the wrestling and playfulness.
The kits rolled around and knocked into Rin, waking the girl from her slumber. Sesshoumaru and Kagome watched as their daughter's eyes moved under her lids and then as the lids slowly fluttered open. The bottles dropped behind her as she moved her arm and petted the fox kits. The three little balls of fur came up close and licked her chin and cheeks, Sango resting her paws on Rin's cheek as she reached up and snatched a bit of the girl's hair in her mouth and tugged lightly.
“Alright alright, I'm up I'm up,” Rin said as she yawned. She looked up as someone stroked her hair away from her face and someone else lifted the three energetic kits into their arms. “Daddy,” she smiled as she looked up at the taiyoukai.
Sesshoumaru smiled a greeting at the girl and leaned down kissing her temple. “Ohayo pup.”
“Morning daddy.”
“Don't I get a good morning too?” Kagome asked and Rin rolled over onto her back and on top of the bottles.
“Ow,” she said softly and sat up. “Those aren't comfy,” she said using one of Kagome's future terms. Rin leaned into Kagome and hugged her adoptive mother. “G'mornin' mamma.”
“Good morning pumpkin.” Kagome hugged the girl and lifted her into her lap. “You know what today is?”
Rin nodded. “Today Daddy fights cause I got hurt,” she said somberly, her smile gone. “Daddy,” she looked at Sesshoumaru her eyes big and sad in her small face. “I don't want you to get hurt because of me.”
Sesshoumaru cupped Rin's face in his hands and kissed her forehead. “Hime, I'm not going to get hurt. I have saved you from many terrors and attacks and now I will protect you from this. Let me be your knight.”
“You'll be ok?”
“Yes. I promise.”
The sun was just rising behind the western lands as Sesshoumaru stood tall and elegant in the middle of the outdoor training grounds that also doubled as the formal fighting arena. The members of his staff, collected military and those of the inuyoukai village on his lands had gathered for the event that was to take place. Nearly every one of them knew Rin or at least knew of her and wanted to see those who had transgressed against her brought down.
Kagome stood off to the taiyoukai's side about three feet away and slightly behind him with Rin at her side, Miroku and Sango stood to his right. As the challenged youkai and their respective lords came up the hill and walked into the arena he felt his blood begin to boil and he could also smell his daughter's fear as she caught sight of her tormentors.
The lynx youkai were first to arrive. As the challenged came up to stand before Sesshoumaru he announced his purpose, his lord taking his place in the stands to watch the event.
“I am Shinaeko. I have been challenged by Sesshoumaru-sama. My honour has been brought into question. I will not substantiate nor deny the claims made against me. The battle will prove my innocence or my guilt.” The lynx bowed to Sesshoumaru and moved back to stand on the side of the fighting ring made by Sesshoumaru's inu and neko warriors to wait his turn at battle.
Next was the ox and he too made his presence known, his lord taking a seat next to the lynx taiyoukai, and he too spoke his ritual words to answer the challenge. The boar came next and both he and his lord followed in example of the other two. The bat however would prove to be the odd one out. The youkai challenged came closer than the others had. He deliberately ignored the ritual and respectable fifteen foot distance that should have been between him and Sesshoumaru, and instead came to stand only five feet away. The bat slid his eyes away from the inu taiyoukai and leered at Rin.
Rin, who was dressed in formal court kimonos - both cerulean blue with a white dog on the back and silver obi - opened her eyes wide at the bat's look and hid behind Kagome's legs. Kagome's eyes lit with a fiery rage at the youkai brazen act and her miko powers gathered around her as her spirit wished to protect the child and also kill the youkai who had frightened her.
“Can't face me chi-” the bat's words were swiftly cut of with a choked gargle and his eyes met Sesshoumaru's.
Sesshoumaru's eyes were burning gold with blood red burning around the edges. The inu growled low with vicious ferocity. By all rights he could kill the bat at that very moment for the youkai having disregarded formalities and ritual tradition, but chose not to. Pulling back the arm that held him off the ground, Sesshoumaru flung the bat into the middle of the arena.
“I will fight you first youkai,” Sesshoumaru snarled barely containing his rage. “But know this, as my name was on the challenge issued, so was my brother's.” He looked to Inuyasha who stood directly to his right wearing his formal red kimono with a white dog on the back while Sesshoumaru stood regal in his white kimono.
“And I too will fight you as well,” said Inuyasha angrily.
“No!” the bat shouted as he stood. “You cannot have to challengers against one challenged! It is not tradition!”
“Actually Makiko,” his lord said as he rose from his seat beside the boar. “As many youkai as wish can challenge and fight you, but they may only attack one at a time. Fighting the sons of InuTaisho is not a fate that I would wish on anyone. But you Makiko have earned yourself that right all on your own.”
A.N: I know this one's kinda short but I wanted the actual fighting to be a separate chapter all on its own. `Never get between a father and his pup' should be up soon. Thank you for all of the reviews, and I hope you all keep on reading.
