“Shinta-sama do you have any thoughts?” Kagome asked.
They had been sitting in the healer's sitting room of her chambers in the castle for nearly two hours now and everyone had told what had happened to them from the day after the ceremonies. What memories they had lost and what the common missing link was. The one string of memories they had all lost was Shippou, though none of them could figure out why. Why him, why was he the target of the spell?
“It is possible that this was Shippou's own doing, though unintentional. But it doesn't explain why everyone seems so calm and forgiving toward Jaken.”
“Jaken?” Sesshoumaru questioned. “What has he done?”
“Please tell me that you remember Sesshoumaru-sama,” Shinta said her eyes wide with disbelief. “Surely you wouldn't forget the actions he took that led to your pup's trauma.”
“Rin,” he had put the girl to bed just after dinner. “What did he do to Rin?”
“Daddy don't you `member?” a sleep heavy voice asked from the doorway.
They all turned their attention to Rin who was clutching Sango to her chest as the little hanyou toddled tiredly over to Sesshoumaru and plopped in his lap, her eyes drooping tiredly. Sesshoumaru gathered the child close and still marveled at the changes made by the adoption ceremony, the most notable being her puppy ears and eyes and claws. She grew tired easily now, and Shinta had told him earlier that she would probably continue to grow tired easily until her body fully adjusted to being hanyou. Her metabolism had sped up greatly and the rest of her body had to catch up with that.
“Tell me again Rin,” the taiyoukai implored as he stroked her much longer black hair.
“*yawn* You know Daddy when you fought for me? *yawn*”
“Fought for you?”
“The fmal chnge,” her words slurred as she fell asleep.
“The what?”
“Formal challenge I believe is what your pup was trying to say,” Shinta said as she looked at the sleeping child who held a sleeping copper red kitsune kit in her arms. The kit was about the size of a half grown cat now, but that didn't stop Rin from carrying her around like a tiny kitten. She was surprised that the other two kits weren't with her; they usually followed wherever Rin or their pack sister went. Her thoughts were soon answered as two small mewling voices sounded from the doorway and the other two kits made their way over to Sesshoumaru and climbed up into Rin's lap to curl around their sister.
Sesshoumaru's brow furrowed as he thought and suddenly rage burned in his golden eyes as a ferocious snarl tore from his throat. Kagome's hand held onto his arm, making him remember that his daughter was asleep in his lap and any disturbance and she could awaken. He calmed with great effort and wrapped his little girl up in his arms, holding onto her and stroking her hair.
His precious little girl had been hurt, had been traumatized and he had forgotten. There was no longer a question, whatever had made them all forget about Shippou and made him forget about Rin and made them all forget about Jaken's role in all of this was not the kit's doing. Kagome stood and left the room, needing to get away by herself for a moment, her thoughts still heavy with self recrimination for forgetting her son.
“You said they wouldn't remember!” Jaken squawked at the shadowed figure.
The treacherous toad youkai had run quickly from his hiding place near Shinta's room after he discovered that they all remembered Shippou and what had happened to Rin and his part in it all.
“I said I would make them forget, I never promised how long it would last,” a stony female voice said from the shadows. “It was only a matter of time before my reincarnation remembered that disgusting youkai kit.”
“I'll tell them it was your spell. I'll tell them you're working with Naraku that you've mated with him.”
“And freely admit to your own role in this treachery? I highly doubt that. When it comes right down to it youkai, you are nothing more than a coward. Besides, a few more well placed `dreams' and that fool girl won't know what her own name is or who she can trust. Her mate will fall apart, the Shikon no Tama will be Naraku's and Inuyasha will go to hell with me as he promised.”
“Don't count on it,” an angry voice growled from behind Jaken and Kagome stepped into the moonlight, her face a mask of rage. “You were inside my head Kikyou! You made me dream that, made me think that I was being raped by Naraku and not only that you made me think that I was enjoying it or that at least my body was. How dare you! How dare you do that to me!” she snarled.
“Do you truly think anyone will believe you girl? Inuyasha will forget you and come back to me.”
“Are you stupid or just blind Kikyou? I'm not mated to Inuyasha, I'm mated to Sesshoumaru!”
“And if not for you, he never would have mated that bitch in the first place!” Kikyou growled angrily at Kagome. “You are nothing more and never will be anything more than a cheap copy of me. You think anyone would rather have you when they could have me. I'm the real one, not you.”
“You? You're not even alive!”
“Oh but I will be, and soon you will be nothing more than ashes under my feet. No one will remember you. No one will mourn for you. You mean nothing to no one, now give me what is rightfully mine!”
“What?” Kagome asked confused and then doubled over in pain clutching her chest and breathing harshly. “M-my soul!”
“My soul! It was never yours! And now it shall all be mine once again!”
“Don't count on it,” Inuyasha growled right before slashing Kikyou with his claws.
“W-why Inu…yasha?” Kikyou asked as she fell to the ground, her body made of clay, bones and grave dirt falling apart.
“You hurt my sister, my brother's mate, and my best friend Kikyou. Why the hell do you think?”
Kagome and Inuyasha watched as the souls of all the dead women that had kept Kikyou alive or rather undead, flew towards the heavens. Their eyes held still upon a small pink light that hovered above the ashes that the body had become and then circled around Kagome before sinking into her heart.
“My soul. It's whole again,” the girl said in awe.
Inuyasha helped Kagome to her feet and the swung her up in his arms and carried her back into the room the others were in. Kagome leaned her head against the hanyou's shoulder tiredly and fell asleep as he carried her. Sitting on the floor next to his brother and holding the sleeping miko in his arms, he told the others what had been discovered, and that after Kikyou had died that he noticed Jaken was gone. The little toad had run off hoping to escape his fate, but one thing he should have remembered was that inu and any canine really, youkai or not, love a good hunt.
It was decided that they would leave for Kaede's village in the morning, leaving Rin and her kits in the care of Shinta and her mate and daughter. After Shippou was found and back in his mother's arms, Jaken would be dealt with. Standing quietly with his daughter and her kits in his arms, Sesshoumaru carried Rin back to her and Shippou's room.
Tucking her into the bed he released a heavy breath. Why would Kikyou, or anyone for that matter wish to rid them all of Shippou's memory? What made the kit such a threat? He looked toward the door that separated the children's bedroom from his and his mate's as a thought hit him. Kagome. That is what made Shippou such a threat. The times he had watched his brother's pack fight various youkai and oni to gain jewel shards, he had watched in amazement as a simple mortal girl fought as fiercely as any youkai mother when the kit was in danger. That was what made him such a threat, Kagome's love for the kit. Her love and motherly affections for him made her fight harder and more viscously than anything. Her powers were at their greatest when she was protecting the kit, and in that moment he knew that the bond between her and her kit was unbreakable, he only hoped that her bond with Rin would be half as strong as hers was with Shippou. Her love for the kit made her stronger, made her powers stronger when fighting to protect him and by making them all forget Shippou, it had made her powers weaker.
He smiled as he walked into his room and looked upon his sleeping mate. Without a doubt he knew that she wouldn't let that kit out of her arms or her sight for a good week if that after he was found. He dressed for bed as he shook his head with a silent chuckle, that little kit would be good and spoiled and quite possibly fattened depending on how much pocky she let him have. Kami knew that pup loved his pocky.
Sesshoumaru lifted the down blankets and slipped into the bed next to his mate. Wrapping Kagome in his arms he kissed his claim mark on her neck as he tucked her close into his body and was soon asleep, holding her contently with his face buried in her thick raven tresses.
