Chapter 1
Assignment
*~There on my hands was the blood of another. How it got there was a mystery to me. I just stood horror struck starring at my tainted hands. I noticed the body that lay dead at my feet. Taking a step back out of reflex, I could see the true merciless damage that had torn apart the lifeless man. My hands flew up to cover my mouth as it hung open in shock. The bitter, metallic taste of blood met my parted lips sending an uncontrollable chill down my spine. Pulling my hand away, I continued to stare at it. Like my fingers could tell me the answers to my questions. The blood was sticky and warm on my small white hands. These were supposed to be my hands, the innocent hands of a child who could never hurt another human being.
There was a feeling that started to boil in the pit of my stomach, and I suddenly felt nauseous. What have I done? It wasn't me. This wasn't happening to me. My mind started a downward spiral as the world started to flash in and out like an old movie where pieces of the film are missing. I sunk to my knees, unable to support my body's own weight. That's when I could no longer keep consciousness. Everything went black, and I was left in an empty space.~*
I awoke from the dream as my eyes shot open. My breathing was still came out in labored pants and the image of my blood stained hands was fresh in my mind. I no longer woke up from the reoccurring dream screaming and drenched in sweat, now I was just slightly distributed. The same as in my dream, I was alone. I reached out to the empty space on my bed. My slender fingers slid over the soft cotton of the sheets where Damien usually slept. I was nearly twenty years old, and I still couldn't sleep alone without having nightmares. Pushing myself up, I slid out of bed to start my day.
The sun had yet to grace me with its almighty light, but I knew I would never be able to get back to sleep no matter what. I depended far too much on my best friend… Damien. I don't know what I'd do if Damien wasn't in my life. I've known Damien sense the day it happened. It being what I dreamt about, but I knew it wasn't a dream. The dream I had was real, and the incident had happened when I was just twelve years old. Almost eight years later I still dreamed of that one day. Ironically, the thing that scared me in my sleep was now what had become my life.
I killed a grown man on that day when I was twelve. The first time I killed a person wouldn't be my last. After I gained consciousness on that day, I woke up to what would be my so-called "destiny." I learned that I was a demon born in an era were demons are almost instinct. It would take me a few years to come to grips with what I was, but I had Damien to help me. Like me, Damien was a demon. He was a few years older than me and known he was a demon all his life. He was assigned to be my mentor so to speak. We created an instant bond of friendship that would never waver.
The years would continue to pass, and Damien, along with many others, trained me to be a killing machine. I learned to call out my demon and keep it under control. I would never kill a person out of instinct again not like the first time. Most if not all demons born in the year 2003-are born as humans. The few, whose blood has demon ancestry, can have, in laymen's terms, a demon "sleeping" within them. If that kind of human is ever threatened, the demon will awake and disastrous things could happen. There are some demons that walk the earth the same way they did hundreds of years before. Of course it is very hard to tell, if you're not trained. Plus, there are very, very few that exists. I have only met one, Orion.
Orion had been tracking me; he took me in after it happened. He knew what was "sleeping" in me, and I had been targeted to be hunted by him. He owns an organization to kill the demons that awaken and cannot be controlled. He also keeps an eye on the older demons and has them hunted if they start to get out of order. He believes that peace with humans is the key to demon survival. I was a different story though. My demon awoke quite early and could still be controlled. Orion decided to let me live, so I was trained. I hunted demons whenever Orion told me with Damien and two other demons named Edmund and Chase.
My arms stretched into the air as I walked from my room to the bathroom. The floorboards in the old Victorian house creaked under my bare feet. I loved the old house in all its historical glory. It was kept in perfect condition and almost all the woodwork was original. The bathroom still had its old-fashioned toilet and cast iron bathtub. I quickly went pee and headed back to my room to change out of my grubby pajamas.
Seeing as how I lived and grew up in a house with three guys, I developed a taste for men's clothing as well as undergarments. I found a pair of baggy blue jeans and a Burton snowboarder t-shirt from my closet and threw them on my bed. I went to my dresser and pulled out a pair of socks and a sports bra from one of the drawers, but found my boxer drawer empty. With a slight smirk on my face, I tiptoed over to Chase's room across the hall. He was still sleeping soundly and wouldn't wake up unless he sensed danger or if he was to have cold water poured on him. Note to self: Pour cold water on Chase while he's asleep sometime. I remembered he had just bought new boxers, and I planned to steal a pair. With the stolen boxers in hand, I snuck out of the room back to my own room. I dressed quickly and made my way down stairs.
I thought every one was sleeping, but I could sense someone in the kitchen. In there, I found the girl Edmund had brought home last night. She was dressed in one of his t-shirts that went down to the girl's mid thigh, and she was looking through the refrigerator. My immediate impression was… well, slut. He'd know the girl for how long? Like five seconds! I knew, because I'd been at the party where he met the girl. They met and then left. I came home and had to put up with the sounds of their "love making." If it could be called that because it only lasted for five minutes after I came home. I shook my head with a chuckle. The girl jumped and turned to look at me.
"Oh," she squeaked. " Who are you?" Time to put on the act. I flashed a sweet and innocent smile.
"I'm… I'm with Edmund," I said in a confused tone, but inside, I was snickering.
"What? Edmund never told me he had a girl friend!" the girl said in an angry tone. Hook, line and sinker
"Oh no, it's alright! I'm used to Edmund bringing home random women to sleep with. I'm ok with sluts and all because they don't mean anything," I shrugged with a sigh. The girl stomped back up stairs to Edmund's room. I smiled evilly and got a piece of cold pizza from the refrigerator and went back to my room to read through a new snowboarding magazine. There was some yelling coming from Edmund's room and then a slap followed by the girl running back downstairs followed by what must have been a very confused Edmund. A few seconds later, a car started on the street below and then screeched off.
"Callisto! Get down here so I can kill you!" Edmund demanded. He was mad, but it was worth it. Messing with him is just too much fun.
"What the hell are you bitching about now?" I asked coming down the stairs and stepping into the room living. I love playing stupid! I now had my long, straw colored hair pulled back in a loose, sloppy bun. My head was topped off with my favorite DC beanie and highlighted stands hung out from under the cap in different places around my face. I planned to go snowboarding when the slopes opened. I tore my ice blue gaze away from the magazine in my hand up to a very pissed Edmund. I knew my eyes were probably sparkling with mischief as I smirked at him.
"Oh yeah," I chuckled brining my hand up to rub my chin. Edmund didn't find any of it amusing and continued to bore into me with his gray eyes that were now the color of cold hard steel. His bleached shaggy hair fell to about his chin. He walked up to tower over me standing about seven inches taller than me at his six feet two inches.
"Don't give me that look! What did you say to Jennifer?" he demanded.
"Ok one: don't stand over me and think you're all macho, because I can kick the crap out of you. And two: I told that slut, I mean Jennifer, what I thought about her. You know I'm the truthful kind," I gave Edmund a cheesy smile and turned to leave.
"She told me you said you were my girl friend!" Edmund added. I was ready for him.
"No, I didn't say I was your girlfriend. Little miss hussy made that assumption on her own," I defended. "You know what they say about assuming," I added.
"Didn't anyone ever teach you that if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all?" Edmund hissed. I had to think about this, because he was who I grew up with, him, Chase and Damien. They had never taught me to be nice. Then there was Orion who I saw as a father figure. The only thing he'd ever taught me was how to kill. That's when I came to my parents. They were never really around when I was growing up. I was born right around the time their home business was really taking flight. They were too busy to notice me. I didn't hold it against them, and I didn't become a bitter person because of it. They simply had a kid at the wrong time. I knew they loved me and that was all that mattered. Just like any parent, they had been reluctant to give me up to Orion when my demon awoke.
"Look Edmund, why did you wanna girl like her for? She was just gonna break your heart anyway. You're too good to be in a relationship for sex."
"But I'm not! How many times do I have to tell you that?" Edmund whined in frustration at my retreating form. I just shrugged and kept on walking. The thing was, he was wrong. He did bring women home in hopes that it could turn into a relationship, but all the women he brought home were only interested in sex. Note to self: Help Edmund with his relationship problems sometime. Edmund fisted a handful of his hair and yelled a line of curses.
"She giving you shit again?" I looked up from my magazine to see Chase in the archway of the stairs. His shoulder length black hair was pulled back into a ponytail. Misty green eyes shown brighter against his pale skin and dark hair. I loved his eyes. He was tall like Edmund, but maybe a few inches shorter. He had boyish features that most girls would drool over, but I saw past his cute exterior. Let's just say Chase was a definite player. Unlike Edmund, Chase was never looking for a relationship, but somehow he always managed to snag the girls that were looking for one. Weird.
"Yes!" Edmund yelled indignantly. Chase came to stand next to Edmund and patted him on the shoulder.
"Don't let her get to ya man," he laughed. Edmund narrowed his eyes at Chase and looked back at me. He glanced down and then got a sinister smile.
"Aren't those your boxer's?" he asked. Chase narrowed his brow. His eyes fell on the boxers I was wearing.
"Hey those are my hot new boxers!" he yelled.
"Correction, they are my hot new boxers," I pointed a thumb at my chest for emphasis. I knew I was in trouble when both guys had evil smiles planted on their faces. My eyes widened, and I bolted up the stairs. I reached my bedroom, but I wasn't fast enough to shut my door. Using all my might, I tried to hold the door against Edmund and Chase. No matter how strong I was their strength out weighed mine at that moment. The two boys burst into my room.
Before I knew what hit me, they had me pinned to the floor. They pulled off my socks and then I knew what was coming. Chase held my legs down as Edmund started to tickle my feet. My laugher filled the whole house. That was one of my weaknesses. I was very ticklish. If I even got poked in the back in would send me into a fit of laughter.
"Ahh! Stop! You're going to be… sorry!" I gasped. They just continued to sinker. My lungs felt like they were going to burst. I finally pulled away from their grasp and scurried far away from them. I found my socks and pulled them back on in a hurry. Edmund held out his hand out to me to help me up. It was an immediate truce. He was halfway through helping me up when there was a voice at my door.
"I see you've started different training techniques," the crisp voice spoke out. Edmund dropped me and turned to knell. Chase knelled as well, and it took me a second to recover from the fall so I could knell. In the doorway was out master Orion. We all stood up, and I spoke out,
"It's no training technique but a successful source of torture." I raised my head to see the smile tug at the corner of Orion's perfectly curved lips. Orion was the most beautiful demon I had seen. He stood before us like a picture of perfection. His long blonde almost white hair was perfectly straight and sleek. It reached to his mid-back and was held back with a simple hair tie. He stared at us with blue-black eyes. His flawless face was graced with high cheekbones, a straight nose, and even jaw. He was shirtless like he usually was, showing off his ideal bronzed skin. His body was one that, if I didn't think of him as a father, would have had me drooling. The only problem was that he was clad in a pair of jeans and black tennis shoes. His concealment spell hid all his demon markings, claws and pointed ears. His true form was a large white panther that I'd only seen twice, but he was stunning no matter what his form.
"I see," he chuckled.
"Do you have a job for us?" Chase asked in a serious tone. Once Orion was around, Chase was all about work. I suddenly hopped that he didn't have a job for us. I was hoping to go snowboarding. Going snowboarding in California was the best thing in the world, because I could go in my t-shirt. It was just a shock if I were to biff it.
"I do have a job for all of you," he responded. Damn, I thought. He must have seen the disappointed looked on my face, because he added, "It will be fun. I promise." His voice was smooth and playful; I like him best when he was in a good mood.
"Where do we have to go?" Edmund asked.
"Japan," he responded. I stopped to think. Japan wasn't that bad. I had spent a whole year training there. My Japanese was a little rusty anyway. "Five hundred years in the past," he added off-handedly. Five hundred years in the what? Is he serious!
"What?" the three of us chocked out at the same time.
"There's a demon in this time that is planning an attack on the human race. He has gathered many demons over the years, and he is almost ready. We could never stop him now if he decided to attack. A war would rage out through the land, disturbing all peace. I'm afraid this war wouldn't be a quick one, and it wouldn't turn out good for demons," he began to tell us.
"So why do we have to go into the past?" I couldn't help but interrupt. "Can't we just kill him before he attacks?"
"This demon, Sesshomaru, lived more than five hundred years ago. He is far too strong to kill now, but his past self… that's a different story," Orion laid out.
"So you want us to travel to the past to assassinate him in order to stop him from bringing war to this world," Edmund assumed, putting the information together.
"Precisely, you three, plus Damien are my best hunters. This job shouldn't be too hard if you play your cards right," he praised. It was a rare moment that Orion would call us the best. It made me proud, and I stood beaming with pride. A full out smile plastered on my face.
"But how exactly are we supposed to time travel?" Edmund asked with skepticism. I hadn't thought of that either. Time travel sounded like something from a cheesy movie. I didn't see how it was possible, but then again is anything possible? I plopped down on my bed, my head lowered in thought.
"I've walked on this earth for over eight hundred years. You learn a lot of things," he answered with a boyish grin. I tilted my head at his answer. It didn't exactly answer the question. "The details are not important at this time."
That's the Orion I knew. I smiled at his sudden serious mood. He walked up to me handing me a large brown envelope. In side there was four tickets, I pulled them out and noticed they were all one way. I knew it! This is going to be a long mission. I didn't quite know why I was feeling bitter, but I knew I needed a break. I reached deeper into the envelope and found a few thousand dollars and Japanese yen, but I was too lazy to count it. I let out a knowing sign.
"How long is this going to take?" I asked.
"You will have a year's time to finish your task. I'll give you details at a later time," he informed. A year? "Just make sure you're at the Tokyo airport in two days. Your flight takes off at 5:30am." Somebody shoot me now.
"We'll be there," Chase spoke out. He glared at me, because of the disgusted look I had. I rolled my eyes at him and turned back to Orion, but he had already left. "What's your problem?" Chase demanded.
"We just got done with an assignment! I thought we were going to get at least a month's break," I complained. It was true. We just got done tracking and killing a very powerful fire demon that had gone off the deep end. It had been a painstakingly long job, and all I wanted to do was get some well-earned sleep and rip up the mountain like there was no tomorrow. "Do you think there will be a ski resort where we're going?"
***
I decided to make the best of my last free day by treating myself to a day at the slopes. Chase and Edmund refused to come with me. They insisted doing last minute training before we left for Japan. What better training was there than shredding down the mountain at top speed? There wasn't, I thought, no matter what I was told. Snowboarding had some how became my only escape to normalcy.
Knowing I was a demon and suddenly killing them for a living had been too much for me. Damien introduced me to snowboarding a year after we met. He said it was a good way to relax and forget your worries. I thought he was nuts the first few times I went. Snowboarding was hard! It just added more stress to my chaotic life. But as I continued to go, it got easier and easier. One day I went down the mountain with the greatest of ease. Everything just came to me and I forgot all my troubles. Damien was right: there was no other feeling like it.
I pulled my car into a parking space at the bottom of the one of the slopes. I didn't go to the chalet parking like everyone else. It was always crowed at the chalet and taking the lift up the mountain was easier. I got out of my car and opened the back door to pull out my beautiful snowboard. It was a Burton board that Damien had custom made for me as a birthday gift. The design was his amazing artwork that had been air brushed onto the top of the deck. It was of a powerful demon warrior. I didn't think much of it when I first got it, but after examining the picture alone, I saw that the demon warrior was me with my own demon markings. Upon a close up inspection, behind me was my guardian 'demon,' Damien. The board was my most precious possession.
I carefully leaned the board on the side of my car and I sat down in the back seat to pull on my DC boots. As I was tying my laces, a shadow passed in front of me. I looked up to see a smiling Damien looking down at me. I smiled back and jumped up with one boot on to wrap my arms around his neck. I instantly felt safe in his arms and desperately wanted to sleep. Damien was my sleeping pill. He was too good to me.
"Where have you been?" I asked after pulling away. I tilted my head back up to meet his eyes. His dark auburn hair was just long enough that it curled up at the ends and was naturally highlighted with California's sunshine and his skin was also glowed tanned from the sun. His deep chocolate colored eyes sparkled with life. His nose was small and flat and his eyes were slightly slanted. Perfectly white, straight teeth shone brightly down at me as his smile widened.
"You'll never guess," he teased. I placed my hands on my hips above my baggy boarding pants. He always made me guess.
"I don't know! Just tell me!" I insisted not having the patience to guess. Damien let out a defeated sigh.
"Ok, I'll tell you. I was at that club we went to last night. You were doing your thing. Chase and Edmund we trying to do some girls…" he went on by waving his hand.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"Anyway, I was getting bored. I was about to find you to get out of there when I ran into Shawn White!" (AN: In case you don't know whom Shawn White is… Just know that he is a famous snowboarder. Yeah he's a skate boarder too, but he's more known for snowboarding.)
"Are you serious!" I screamed. Sean White was my idol. "Why didn't you come get me?" I demanded in hurt tone. He's gonna have my babies!, I thought with a high pitched voice in my head.
"I tried!" he assured. "You were nowhere and Shawn was going to a private midnight run on this mountain! He asked me to come, and I had to go right then. I'm sorry I didn't find you, but you know I had to go."
"I guess I would have done the same," I shrugged still jealous that he got to snowboard with a soon-to-be legend. Grumble Grumble I sat back down and continued to lace up my second boot. Damien was dressed in his gear as well; I guessed he didn't change from last night or he was planning on going snowboarding again. I finished and stood.
"Are you going some more?" I asked.
"Oh yeah," he said snapping out of his thoughts after I broke the silence. "I slept in my car last night I was so tired after I got done. Now I'm just itching to go again. Would you mind going with me Madame?" he asked playfully trying to cheer me up.
"I suppose," I sighed with my own light tone. It seemed to convince him.
"Well let's go! A new slope opened up with a bunch of jumps and stuff. I got to go on it last…" he stopped when he noticed my annoyed appearance. "Oh yeah," was all he could say. I just smiled; I couldn't be mad a him. We hiked up to the chair lift our boards under our arms. I rode goofy, so I strapped my right foot in my front DC binding on my board, and he rode regular so he strapped his left foot in the front binding of his board. We got on the chair lift quickly and settled in for the 8-minute ride.
"Did you hear about our new mission?" I asked.
"Umm… no. Are you serious?" his reaction similar to mine. Great minds think alike. I nodded somberly.
"I kid you not. Orion is shipping us to Japan for a year, and that's not the worst of it. We gotta do our mission in the fucking Feudal area. Orion found a way to send us into the past!" I burst out, my dislike clearly showing in my voice.
"What?" Damien still in the disbelief stage. I slowly went over everything Orion had gone over with us that morning. "So who's the demon were going after?" he asked after I had failed to mention the name of the demon.
"I think he said his name was Sesshomaru," I said indifferently. Damien got a look on his face that told me he knew something I didn't. It was my turn to ask, "What?"
"Do you know who owns this mountain?" he whispered as he learned closer to me. I shook my head and he looked around before turning back to me. "His name is Sesshomaru something too," he stated. My jaw dropped and I'm sure my eyes were bulging.
"You think the Sesshomaru's are two in the same?" I whispered.
"How many people do you think are named Sesshomaru?" he asked.
"This is deep," my voice trailed off. I surveyed my surroundings, not really knowing what or who I was looking for.
"And the thing is, He's here today for the grand opening of the new slope!" he said almost bouncing in his seat.
"Oh my God! What do we do? Orion would know if he was here wouldn't he? Then Orion knows we can never beat him in this time. I think we should stake this Sesshomaru out and just get a feel for what he's like before we go to Japan. This will be like homework… fun homework," I grinned. I may have hate being on the job sometimes, but it got my adrenaline going like nothing else.
"All right, but don't do anything rash. We can't have you changing into a demon and getting killed ok?" his blood was pumping too, I could tell. He would always be worried for me though. We both nodded in agreement and got ready to exit the lift as we came to the top. I would get a head start on this mission and get snowboarding in all at the same time. Cuttin' corners baby! Today would be a good day.
The two of us moved off to the side before we went down a slope. We needed to try to sense the demon known as Sesshomaru. If I couldn't sense him now, then he must have concealed his powerful aura. We both came up blank on sensing him. The only thing left to do was go down the mountain and keep an eye out for an unnaturally beautiful or graceful person, like Orion. The one thing we had to work with was Damien's vague memory of what he remembered Sesshomaru looking like in a picture he saw. He told me to look for silver hair.
"How do we know he's even out here? Maybe he's in the chalet or he's sick or…" but I was cut off when Damien put his hand over my mouth. With his other hand, he silently pointed to a man that got off the chair lift. The first thing I noticed was that he was a snowboarder. He was dressed in black and silver. He was very tall and stood arrogantly. My gaze traveled to his breathtaking face. He was a demon all right. His beauty resembled Orion's, but this demon's was harder and colder. His eyes were molten amber and his hair flowed out behind him in soft silver strands. This was Sesshomaru. This was the demon we would be sent to kill.
AN: Well there's the first chapter in all its first goodness! -_-; Ha! I'm just being weird now. Moving on… I hope people liked it!
