Chapter Two:

"So how was class today?" the silver-haired man asked his companion in the seat next to him.

"Mm, was good. We talked about the past," the man with dark hair said while looking out the window, watching the buildings pass at a quick speed.

"Hmph, you teach a fucking history class, Kouga. Of course you're going to talk about the past!" Inuyasha said while rolling his eyes.

Kouga smiled at his friend's words. "How was your day, Inuyasha?"

Rolling his eyes yet again, the golden-eyed man replied, "Speed-trap duty today, hun. Nothing exciting." Inuyasha ended, sounding a bit disappointed.

"Well, even though you are still a half-demon, it still worries me, you out in the line of duty," Kouga sighed before continuing, "I so wear the skirt in this relationship." Giggling, he glanced back up at the one driving.

Inuyasha had a feral grin on his face, hearing his mate admitting that he was the one who wore the metaphorical pants in the relationship made his lips spread and a tooth stick out a bit. He was never tired of hearing the other admit that he was the "man" in the relationship.

"Hush, Inu-babe, don't you start getting cocky on me now, not after 500 years!" Kouga said with a sweet smile.

Seconds passed before Kouga noticed the silver-haired hanyou's shoulders shaking. "Inuyasha?" he asked, not sure what was wrong.

"Cocky now? I don't know where you've been...but as far back as I can remember, I was always a cocky bastard, and so were you!" he said with a chuckle.

"Mm, so true so true! The time I loved most about our relationship, Inuyasha, is when we met after Naraku had finally been slain. Now, that was when we were way too sure of ourselves," the blue eyed man said, scrunching his nose up at the memory with a smile.

~*~*~*~*~*~Flashback~*~*~*~*~*~

Weeks and even months had gone by now since the Shikon no Tama had been fully restored. Kagome was back in her time, every now and again coming to the other side for a visit.

Shippou and Inuyasha traveled the roads, finding helping those in need more enjoyable than sitting around doing nothing. There might have been no gain this time around, like finding a jewel shard, but the gratitude of a village seemed to fill that void. Village to village they traveled. Finding some stray demon who was terrorizing the occupants and banishing them was what they became accustomed to.

Years went by, Kagome's visits had lessened as she caught up on her studies and was now going steady with Houjou. Miroku and Sango were busy with the kids, lots and lots of kids. Inuyasha and Shippou would stop in to the village and check in on their little nieces and nephews and catch up with the happy couple. After a week or so they would head back out for the open road that would lead them to a new adventure.

*~*~*~*~*

The two were now walking alongside a mountain when the kitsune noticed they were traveling on familiar grounds. "Oi, Inuyasha? Isn't this mountain range near Kouga's cave?" the kitsune questioned.

"Hn, how would I know? I'm just following a path, brat!" he said a bit viciously, but with a bit of tenderness only Shippou could catch. After a few years of being alone, the two grew a brother-to-brother bond.. and at times, father-to-son.

Shippou had grown much, standing about half the height of Inuyasha now, and had developed much of his kitsune power. Inuyasha still wielded the Tetsusaiga, but never had to unleash its ultimate power, for not too many demons dared to cross his path after hearing the tale of him defeating Naraku, the most powerful demon to ever exist. His hair still flowed of silver strands, eyes gold and bright, bright with the signs of forgiveness and understanding. Of being able to move on.

His friends and he had been through a lot: death, betrayal, love, and much more. Bringing down their most formidable foe laid all the past pains to rest, and everyone was able to move on. Even Inuyasha.

He sniffed the air, his ears twitched when the familiar scent of his old rival filled his head. He too had recognized the mountain range they were now passing, and soon enough they'd be nearing the wolf prince's cave. He noticed Shippou eyeing him, questioningly.

"Nani??" he asked glaring down at his companion.

Eyes wide, Shippou lowered his head and whispered, "Nothing." A small smile graced his lips, but the hanyou was none-the-wiser.

The two continued walking, Inuyasha never steering them in another direction. The kitsune could smell that over the next hill they would come across a waterfall and arrive at the mouth of Kouga's cave. 'What is he planning?' Shippou asked himself.

Sure enough, they climbed a grassy hill, and some yards ahead was a gorgeous waterfall, the water as clear as the sky. Inuyasha kept walking towards the waterfall, and the young kitsune followed along. The half demon kneeled on the side of the stream once they got close to it, cupping his hands in the water and bringing them up to his mouth. After a long drink, a sly grin crossed Inuyasha's face. "Tastes like wolf," he growled, his smile never wavering.

Glancing up from his own hands that he was drinking from, Shippou decided he had to get some answers. Inuyasha was acting way too strange today, and that was saying something! "Alright! That's it!" the kitsune jumped from his kneeling position and glared at the stunned hanyou.

"S-Shippou? What's gotten into you?" Inuyasha asked, leaning back on his hands when he fell back from being pulled out of his thoughts by Shippou's shouting.

"Why are we here, Inuyasha? You knew where we were going this entire time, didn't you?" the red-headed teen asked, folding his arms.

Inuyasha lowered his head for a few moments before looking up into Shippou's pale green eyes. Turning to face the water streaming by, he shrugged his shoulders. "We were heading in this general direction, and I didn't see any harm in dropping by the mangy wolf's cave to say hi. It has been 4 years since we've seen him."

Cocking an eyebrow at Inuyasha, Shippou figured it best to not go into it anymore. "Next time Inuyasha, just say we're going to see him. Don't make it a big secret," he finished, sitting back down next to the hanyou.

Glancing to his side, Inuyasha smiled. "Gomen Shippou. I don't know what I was thinking." He reached over and ruffled the red mop on the kitsune's head and stood up. "Well, let's get this over with."

The two travelers hopped from one rock to another, climbing along side the waterfall until they reached the top. No more than a second after they landed were they surrounded by a wolf pack, spears at their throats.

Tossing his head back and rolling his eyes, he looked back at the men and wolves alike before cocking a brow. "Where is that puny wolf Kouga at?" he gruffed out.

"He's out patrolling! And who are you to come barging onto our land like you're someone important" Snapped one of the demons.

"We're friends of Kouga's!" piped up Shippou. "I don't think he'd be too happy to know you treated his friends like this!"

"Feh, says you! Trespassers are trespassers! We'll skin you alive and feast over your body!" said another.

Raising an eyebrow, lifting a claw, Inuyasha started, "I'd like to see you try you fu--"

"Out of the way! Move!" shouted a familiar looking wolf demon, who was carrying something behind him, followed by another familiar wolf, carrying something in front of him. Finally registering, Inuyasha realized who it was that interrupted him, and what the two were carrying.

"Ginta?! Hakkaku?! What happened to Kouga?" Inuyasha said, barging through the guards who had him surrounded, making his way over to the three.

"Inuyasha? What are you doing here?" asked Ginta, almost losing his grip on his leader.

"Your questions later, mine first!" the hanyou shouted, his heart racing when he began to smell the scent of Kouga's blood. "What happened?" he asked again while scooping up Kouga, one arm under his knees, arm bracing him from behind his back, he rushed him into the cave. Everyone followed and watched as Inuyasha laid the unconscious wolf prince on one of the beds made of straw and wolf pelts.

Looking back up to Kouga's trusted companions, Hakkaku began explaining what happened. Once Hakkaku began speaking, Inuyasha followed his nose to where Kouga was bleeding. He ripped off his armor, now noticing a hole off to the side. He removed the rest of the furs and plates off of the injured wolf's upper body. Inuyasha examined the wound, prodding a finger, which made his patient flinch in pain. The two wolf demons explained that they had been attacked while out on duty; by humans, or priests; warrior priests who fought hand to hand combat and were capable of killing. The group they'd stumbled upon were out for demon blood, and had stabbed Kouga with a very blunt sword.

"... and so with Kouga down, we grabbed him and high-tailed out of there. But we can't figure out why--" Ginta was interrupted this time by Inuyasha.

"Poison. There was poison on the blade, that's why he hasn't woken up yet," the silver-haired hanyou confirmed. "Shippou, my bag!" he hollered over his shoulder to the kitsune.

"H-hai!" Shippou stammered as he ran up to Inuyasha, digging out a small pouch from a pocket hidden in his pants.

"What is that?" Hakkaku asked, looking down at a small jar Inuyasha pulled out of the bag.

Inuyasha smirked, "After years of traveling with us, Kagome brought over boxes of her medicines. And years of her taking care of us, we picked up a few things."

The two wolves nodded at each other. "Nee-san was always good at everything she did. I wish she would come visit some time," Ginta whined.

"I need some clean towels and water, now!" growled out Inuyasha to some unsuspecting wolf demons standing nearby. They dashed out of the cave and returned shortly with the supplies. Looking down at Kouga, he whispered, "This is going to hurt a bit." At that, he plunged his fingers into his wound, the dark-haired man's eyes flew open and he screamed in agony. His comrades all yelled at Inuyasha for attacking their leader, but before they could advance, Kouga began to fall back and Inuyasha caught him by his free hand to set him back down gently to rest. He removed his fingers and dipped the rags into a bucket of water that was resting at his side. He rung out the rag once over the wound, the blood sliding down his side more quickly. He dipped the cloth again and began to dab at the oozing wound.

"I-Inuyasha?" Hakkaku asked.

"I had to get the poison out and that is the easiest solution. He'll be fine," Inuyasha explained, never faulting in his movements.

Once he was sure the bleeding had stopped, he used another rag to dry the area off, and used another to smear the ointment from the jar over the wound. Bandages were provided and he wrapped the sleeping man up tightly, and then covered him in a warm blanket. "After a day's rest he'll be back up again," he said to the pack members. A collected sigh of relief sounded through the cave and everyone began to laugh softly.

Assured that their leader would come through, the pack dispersed to their normal activities. Inuyasha stood, lifting his arms high above his head and arching his back as he stretched out all the tension he had while tending his old rival. He glanced back down at the sleeping form, his lips parted just slightly, his breathing deep and heavy. 'He's probably dreaming,' Inuyasha thought.

At that, he walked towards the entrance of the cave, Shippou trailing behind. He flopped down on the edge of the cliff right outside the cave mouth, and watched the sun slowly disappear, the kitsune sitting next to him. "Beautiful," he whispered. The sky was a shade of blue, purple, red, and orange. Shadows danced on the outskirts of the forest into the grass valley that was split by the stream from the waterfall. Inuyasha truly enjoyed moments like this when he could watch the beauty and grace of Mother Nature.

"This is a perfect spot," Shippou agreed.

The two sat in silence until the last ray of sun vanished. Glancing up and seeing diamonds dancing against a dark wall, the two decided to sleep outside that night. Inuyasha was more talkative now...he had to be when his only companion was a growing kitsune. It was either talk to the boy or have a prank pulled on him. Talking helped their bond become stronger and it was nothing but an afterthought to both of them that Inuyasha talking a lot was something to be unheard of. They pointed out different patterns in the sky and told stories of how stars came to be. They talked about the past, the future, and present.

"What will we do once Kouga's awake again, Inuyasha?" the kit asked.

"I dunno. I guess we'll just see where things go," Inuyasha said with a shrug.

"Hn," the teen said softly.

Inuyasha smiled to himself, knowing the kit was fighting to stay awake. "Oyasumi, Shippou," he said rolling over to his side, back facing the red-head.

"Ah? O-Oyasumi, Inuyasha," the boy said before turning the opposite way of Inuyasha, eyes fluttering closed as sleep finally won the battle.

*~*~*~*~*

Inuyasha didn't realize how tired he was for he quickly dozed off after he heard Shippou tell him goodnight. A few hours had passed and he woke up to the sounds of the demon wolves coming back in for a break in shift. Inuyasha yawned quite loudly, his eyes still drooping, daring to shut. He glanced over to his friend and saw the little form scrunched up into a tight ball. After they had fallen asleep the temperature must have dropped some, leaving a slight chill ringing through the mountain side.

Inuyasha stood up and walked back towards the wolf cave (Shippou had left their pack of camping supplies in there earlier). He walked past the sleeping prince and fumbled his steps when he heard soft whimpers coming from the injured wolf. He turned back around and knelt next to Kouga's head. He rubbed his hands together fiercely before placing them on the dark-haired man's forehead. Inuyasha could feel that Kouga had a fever and was sweating, but his body was shaking and cold. He leaned down and pulled the covers more tightly around his body and up to his chin. He walked over to his bag and picked it up, along with a few extra pelts and blankets before heading back outside.

As he reached the mouth, his ears picked up the same soft whimpers and Inuyasha sighed to himself. He lowered his head and continued his trek out of the cave. He set his bag down next to Shippou and unzipped it to pull out a warm blanket. He placed it gently over the sleeping boy and laid a pelt next to him in case it happened to get a bit more cool out tonight.

Picking up the last of the pelts and blankets, Inuyasha walked back inside, his ears greeted with the same whimpers from Kouga. "Weak wolf," he muttered. He approached the man and stepped over him. He sat down next to him and laid the extra pelts over Kouga and himself. He lined his body up with the wolf's making himself a barrier from the coldness of the stone mountain side and as extra body heat to warm him up. He kept his back to the wolf, and pulled the covers over his shoulder and tucked them under his chin before he fell into the depths of darkness.

*~*~*~*~*

'So warm,' Inuyasha thought. 'I don't want to wake up yet. These wolf beds are actually quite comfortable,' he said to himself, a smile gracing his features. 'Mmm it smells good too. But it's not food. I know this smell.' He took a deep breath, the scent flooding his senses and his head fogged up, his body tingling with the smell going through it. Now completely unable to stay asleep, he opened his heavy lidded eyes and was greeted by soft blue ones.

"Ohayo, Inuyasha."
